Reviews of Malaprop's Bookstore
Kaitlin Terry
I didn't have any photos from inside the bookstore but it is absolutely adorable! They have the genres sectioned off perfectly, so you know exactly where to go! Employees were extremely helpful and sweet! They also had a blind date with a book section, the book was wrapped up so you couldn't see what it was, and a typed synopsis was on the front to tell you what it was about (without giving it away)! I could spend hours in here 😁

Independent bookstores are my favorite, so I rarely pass one without going in. Was super excited to explore this one, but unfortunately there were so many people inside that you couldn't "stir them with a stick" as my mama says. They did have a great selection of books, and obviously they are doing something right with the crowd that they attracted. I hope to visit again when they are less busy, maybe on a weekday.

What a great asset to the community- a thriving independent bookstore! Be sure to check out the banned books and the "blind date with a book" displays, along with staff favorites! This store is a true jem.

Honestly, who comes to Asheville and doesn't stop by? It's right in the heart of Asheville. This bookstore is adorable. The coffee shop inside also serves delicious lattes. 🤤
I love the large selection of books. It is a dangerous place to come for book lovers.
You wont regret popping in.
Amanda
I used to love this bookstore but they've closed the bathrooms for customers. How can you have a cafe but not let me use the bathroom anymore? Good selection of books but I was very disappointed they still have the bathroom closed in 2022. There's a public library down the street that has one though.
Jenna Clark
This bookstore is so charming and well curated. Loved the “blind date with a book” section and they also had a great selection of translated fiction. A must-visit in Asheville!

Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe has a lovely selection of books, journals, games, and puzzles. I enjoyed lavender tea from the Cafe. There is one table and two chairs to sit so be prepared to stand while you browse.
Malaprop’s is locally owned and located at 55 Haywood Street, Asheville, NC.

Ran in here on a whim and was so impressed. Very unique selection no matter what you’re looking for. Great place to discover new books by local authors and just interesting reads you wouldn’t find in a chain bookstore. Great energy as well, very atmospheric. Would recommend 10/10. Picked up 3 books after about 15 minutes of looking

Really enjoyed this shop! Nice displays, it was fun to wander the aisles and see what caught our attention. Loved the Blind Date with a Book display, and we picked one out to take home. Staff was friendly and we felt welcome.
Marla Della
Cute book store. Friendly and welcoming employees.
Kelsie Buck
Very friendly staff. eclectic selection of books. I especially appreciate the section designated for a blind book selection. Blind date with a book. I tend to get overwhelmed with picking a new book and anticipating some buyer's remorse. Blind date with a book was exactly what I needed to try something new based on a loose description without so much dread.
Holly Brown
This place is so cute and everyone is so nice! I asked for 3 different books and they had none of them but I still enjoyed my time there. Their date night mystery books are the cutest and I hope they bring back speed dating??!!!
Chris Kennedy
They have great books and pretty knowledgeable staff. Very nice local author section. The selection is a little more limited similar to a b. Dalton rather than books-a-million. All together 100% with stopping in.
Kyle Weber
Hate to give a bookstore just a middling rate but I wasn't super impressed with the selection and a number of different sections
(non-fiction, psychology) were much less well-stocked than I'd expect for a bookstore of this size. Aisles were somewhat difficult to navigate as well. Overall it's fine but nothing special -- I'd prefer the local Barnes & Noble honestly.
Shannon L
I LOVE a good bookstore and this one did not disappoint. Spent almost an hour browsing and getting ideas for what to choose from the library next.
Ashley Hansen (Ash)
Really cute bookstore! Didn't have quite the variety I was expecting, but beautiful shop and incredibly friendly staff.
H Smith
Reminded me of Kramer Books in DC, but with wider aisles. Lots of things to look at and I bought a couple of unique items. Helpful staff.
Nacho Connery
Excellent shop with a nice cafe. The best part about this store is the "Blind date with a book" section, where books are picked by the staff, wrapped in brown paper, with a synopsis, so much fun!
Diane Albanese
Just walk in, walk around, browse and you’re sure to find the perfect book/gift/tchotchke. We love independent booksellers and this must be the place in Asheville. We heard the beginning of a lecture from an author. Plus they have coffee!
Cheronica Young
Cozy book store with a good selection. They have some great picks displayed on the tops of the bookcases in the fiction section and also a bestseller section near the front.
And a nice surprise was a selection of books that you can buy without looking at the cover. The books are individually wrapped and have things such as genre and brief descriptions writing in the front of the wrapping. You choose your book based on that and when you buy it, you get to unwrap your surprise book. Lovely idea.

This is such an adorable bookstore! As an indie bookseller, I'm trying to hit up every indie I come across as I travel and Malaprop's is one I've heard nothing but great things about - and it deserves every single nice comment! I walked in, immediately thought it was cute, wandered a little bit, and then turned a corner and it just keeps going?? It's twice as big inside as it looks when you first walk in. The shelves are well-stocked, lots of face-outs, adorable knick knacks and there are things to look at in every corner. I was most looking forward to their blind date with a book display and it did not disappoint! I got two that I'm super excited about and the descriptions on each one were so compelling that I wanted all of them. It was popping for a Tuesday morning and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The café is delightful, the specialty drink names made me chuckle, and my coffee was delicious (I got the Fire Distinguisher). They do require masks inside (👍) but I saw a few patrons with them under their chins (👎) so be aware of that if you're someone who gets uncomfortable around unmasked people. There were only two or three and they seemed like they were people who got coffee, pulled their mask down to take a drink, and never pulled it back up. Absolutely not the store's fault since there are signs clearly stating that the café is for to go only. It's not their fault that people can't follow directions and I only saw five staff members with as busy as it was, so some people got away with it. As a small business operating during a pandemic, they're doing a great job. As an independent bookstore in general, they're excellent and I strongly recommend going when you're in Asheville!
Also, I did have to call and ask because I couldn't find it online but they do allow dogs! I brought my very excited baby and they even gave her a treat!
Jocelyn C
Loved this bookstore! Nice atmosphere. Variety of books. Cool setup!
Danielle Nevarez
Really nice little book store! Staff is nice and helpful. Really good selection of books in all genres. They even have a cool blind date with a book section! Cafe is really nice too, I recommend the chai tea latte!

Malaprop's has been a staple of downtown Asheville since I first moved here for college 25 years ago. I love the feel of it, the friendliness of the staff, and the selection of books, of course. I recently did a pre-order of a book written by a friend, who was signing copies before the release date, and when I wasn't sure if I'd make it to pick up the book before their closing hour because of traffic, they were so nice and just said to ring them right before they closed and as long as I would be there within 10 or 15 minutes, that they'd come unlock the door for me and get me the book. Fortunately, traffic worked out in my favor, and I even had time to browse a little. I love their 'Blind Date with a Book' wall, where they have staff picks, that are wrapped in brown paper with a description on written on the outside. You don't get the author or title until you get home and decide to go on that blind date! Of course I had to buy one!
Maricris G
We always visit the bookstore when we visit Asheville. We were looking forward to spending time at their cafe too and got excited when we saw their street sign saying that "the cafe is back" but it was unfortunately closed when we got inside. Plus, their restroom was out of order too! Nonetheless, our bookworm got the books she wanted and the "free book" section by the entrance was a good added bonus to make our visit worth it.
Maia Rodriguez
Excellent spot in Asheville with some pretty unique book genres and a lovely little coffee area. They also support local authors and mark books that are recommended by staff. I could have easily spent half a day in here. Great vibe.
Dust Jacket Studios
Received my copy of Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen today. The book came faster than expected and was so well packaged there wasn’t a bend or gold to be found. Thank you so much!

One of The best bookstores I've been to. With so many written staff picks, autographed books, selection of read-worthy stuff, and knowledgeable staff, passion for books just oozes out and the real bookstore experience is still alive in America. Thank you Malaprops! And we all need to support more local businesses!
Sherie Wilson
I soooo love this bookstore! It's inviting to lazily browse, has unique reading inspired gifts, includes a nice cafe for noshing, and manages to have a steady schedule of local and national authors for chats and signings.
Picture is from the Deborah Harkness event in May 2018. It was very well managed and highly entertaining.
Nathan Ramirez
Nice cozy bookstore located right in the heart of downtown AVL, seems small from the outside but has an ideal selection of books and souvenirs. Inside is a cafe with coffee and small pastries, children’s corner and books ranging from all ages.
Scott “DC Cheetah” Suchyta
Malaprop's is a wonderful independent bookshop. My personal favorite is their collection of local/regional non-fiction (as well as highlighted local writers). I will always stop in when I am in Asheville. The blind-date-with-a-book grab bags are always fun as well. The Venn diagram overlap with visitors to Chocolate Fetish has to be high, so it's probably a good idea to head across the street for some bon bons for reading fuel.
Emily
Really extensive collection of books. Didn’t get anything from the cafe this time. Would have loved a few more reading nooks throughout the store.
Samantha McGowan
I love this place. Their book displays are relevant and well done. Their book selections are extensive. And the atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and free. Shop local!
Krystal McCann
Went for a book signing it was a great experience! The staff kept it very organized And they were all super nice. The owner mentioned a few times how small the store was and while waiting to have our book signed we noted that for it being small the book selection looked to be very expansive and well put together and definitely a place I would want to shop
Rob Cacioppo
Quick stop for some books and treats. Love jazz band set such a cool vibe. Wish we had more time to hang out
Paul Schuler
A smaller, but curated selection of books you can enjoy in the adjoining cafe. Make sure you buy the book first before settling in though! Not a library y'all. Great kids section with tiny little chairs for tiny little baby bottoms.
Cheryl L. Conner
A local favorite place with a great selection of books, cleverly arranged. Great staff. Nice cafe.
Christapher Martin
Cool local bookstore with a good cafe. I enjoyed walking around here and sitting out front enjoying the nice fall weather.
Joy Resor
This is one of those awesome, independent bookstores that make me smile. The book selection is super and interesting, with doodads mixed in. A few weeks ago, I read my book Designed To SHINE! Read Aloud Rhymes for Any Size Heart for Story Time, and I was told that it was one of the best Story Times ever...so cool! Thank you for being the amazing bookstore you are, Malaprop's.
Brad Smith
One of my fav bookstores for sure, in a very convenient downtown location. Try one of these delicious local craft teas at the Malaprops Bookstore Cafe.
Lauren Lewis
We were visiting Asheville in July and had parked just up the street from here, as soon as we saw it I knew I had to go in. Such a cute bookstore with everything organized well, staff was friendly and I bought one of the “staff pick” books. Will definitely be returning if we are in the area again!
Alicia Soto
Such a fun bookstore in the heart of AVL. Not only do you get a quintessential bookstore experience, you also get a great selection of new fiction, classics, and out of print novels in addition to ARCs. The YA and kids selection is also pretty amazing. We enjoyed browsing and even found some new pieces to add to our collection.
Savannah Nelson
Our favorite book store we have visited!! It is so friendly inside, not intimidating like most independently owned book stores. There were so many unique finds but also guides for choosing like best seller lists. Very friendly service.
Katrina A Curtis
Unique selection of books and very friendly service!
Nikki M
Located in the heart of downtown Asheville.
On the same block with plenty to do and see. There's a coffee shop and a nice amount of seats. Very comfortable, nice selection of books and merchandise.
From week to week they post a list of best selling books . Very cute book shop worth a visit.
Matt Steere
Excellent book story. Had a great selection and wonderful environment.
Tyler Devan
Easily one of the best book shops I've ever been to. Lots of great book club options and staff picks. Awesome blind date with a bookseller concept.
Chris Thaxton
Our "must stop" when in Asheville, this is a book lover's dream. Could spend an entire day here. Great blend of subjects and local authors, with reliable staff recommendations.
Valorian Finch
Wonderful, local bookstore! I particularly enjoyed the staff picks and 'blind date with a book' section. I was, unfortunately, unable to locate the book I came for. However, a super friendly, helpful staff member referred me to a few other local, as well as online, stores I might have some better luck with. I will absolutely be returning, especially when the book(s) I'm seeking are less obscure!
Jenni Austin
Great shop downtown, I enjoyed the Staff Pick selections...very helpful when I want something new to read but don't know exactly what I want. They also have a nice selection of stickers and small gifts and really cute wrapping paper if you want your purchase gift wrapped.
Christian Alvarez
Gotta love the none corporate look and feel of this place, it has a nice charm to it. There’s also a café if you want to sip on something while reading a nice book!
Barbara Goldentyer
Really cool book selection and journals and gifts. I loved the nature and history books. They were crowded but it’s manageable. My biggest complaint is no bathrooms at all! They sell drinks and food but don’t offer restrooms. There’s not many nearby either. We almost had to leave downtown and drive away to find a restroom.
Kim Harney
Came here to try the Blind Date shelf - wasn't disappointed! Lots of good selections/sections including a large children's section. Didn't think the books were overpriced - priced what the book itself was priced, not above. Will definitely come back when I'm in the area.
Azalea Screams
Felt like Quail Ridge in Raleigh, lovely little place with a great horror section. I felt right at home and practically had to be dragged out.
Rachel Burns
Always a favorite stop in Asheville! Been a visiting customer for 10+ years at this point and have taken many friends along. Lovely place to spend an hour when its raining. And don't forget to buy one of their Date with a Mystery books for an adventurous read.
Drew Crismon
I love hanging out in this bookstore and exploring all their sections. Albeit it smaller, it has a wide variety of different genres and I'm really excited to try a "blind date with a book," where a book is merely described on the outside wrapping paper and you purchase, then unwrap and read.
Z L
This is my wife’s and father in law’s favorite bookstore and I do understand why. They have a fantastic selection of political books and some unusual literature. Covid has changed it for the worse though, there’s nowhere to sit and they serve coffee, but have no public bathrooms( we had to locate one elsewhere and we spent at least $20 at the bookstore this visit). I know that Malaprops is not responsible for the lack of public bathrooms(they’re just one business, albeit an iconic one), but a bathroom for customers and less awful hours would be appreciated. I hate to think of how terrible it must be for the librarians to have the only public bathrooms nearby.
Edit: I left reviews and wrote the city a letter that their lack of public restrooms is a grave insult to public libraries and small businesses. There’s no way a small bookstore should ever have to turn into a restroom because of the city’s failings.
Christina Willis
What a great bookstore! It has everything you can hope to find. Every section is well-labeled; the variety is very wide for the size of the store. It reflects what a local bookstore should be all about - good selection, personalized recommendations, excellent customer service.
I will be back!
Christopher Pine
Always a joy to shop here. Such a wonderful gem of a store. We particularly like the *blind date" books, where you buy them sight unseen with only a few key words on the plain brown wrapper to key you in on the type of story it contains. Have found so many great books we might otherwise have overlooked.
Audrey Clarke-Pounder
Excellent progressive bookstore for adults as well as children. Love the "banned books" shelf.
Mary H
After visiting bookstores all around the country on my roadtrip, this is one of my favorites! Really well curated and very impressive regional section (which is something I always look for in local shops, and others have been quite disappointing). This is the kind of bookstore where you look around and keep finding interesting books and eventually have to stop looking so you don’t end up with a giant stack of books at the checkout.
Amy G
2nd visit in four years, love this bookstore! Great books and always enjoy the eclectic selection of fun to bring a good laugh to life. We bought these for friends.
Will visit this store every time we come to town.
Thanks Malaprop’s!
Aimee Dars Ellis
This local, independent bookstore has great character! Nice selection of books and full schedule of events.
Katherine W
One of my favorite bookstores anywhere! They have a great selection of popular fiction, as well as local authors. Any time I come to Asheville I make sure to pick up one of their “blind date with a book” selections. A local gem!
Wendy Smith
Awesome local book store with plenty of local ties and still all of your national bestseller type books as well. Only issue is they close so early! Been multiple times at closing and there are like 15 people in the store & downtown is hopping. Why close at 5 especially on the weekend?
Meredith Hemphill
I always find something at this wonderful local bookstore. They feature North Carolina writers prominently, have a whole shelf of "blind date with a book," and have a little café inside. The staff are always friendly and glad to help you find the right book. I make sure to come to Malaprop's every time I'm in Asheville.
Tanairy Diaz
Finding book's in my primary language is always amazing. Also got my first blind date at this book store. Staff were amazing and very helpful.
Joey FLORIDA
Nice clean place. Mostly newer material. Thin classics section. Great kids and teens sections. Used book shop at library just a few storefronts down the street.
Stephanie Beck
Great selection... helpful staff, and love the "Blind Date with a Book" idea! Haven't opened ours yet.
Laura Eavenson
Second time visiting - love it here! I always find things I didn't know I wanted. That's the best part about an independent bookstore. This one is great because of the awesome location, large selection and...the blind date with a book!
Deanna Austin
I loved the Blind Date with a Book idea. What a great way to bring even more joy to reading.
Henry Dixon
Great book store. Check out the staff picks - very diverse, but all are worthy of being highlighted.
Noah Sanders
A wonderful place with incredibly friendly staff, the staff is incredibly well read and can offer many suggestions for every genre.
They have a great selection of local books ranging from history and photography to folklore and fiction, as well as an adorable collection of children's titles.
Chantal W.
I love this bookstore. It's cozy and stuffed full of great reads. I always do the "Blind Date with a Book" and have gotten some wonderful reads from it. They've got a great kids section. The staff is always kind and helpful as well.
Paul Aughey
A fantastic bookstore. Lots of selection, friendly staff, a cafe, and cool idea like book "blind dates" of their favorites but with a brown paper cover describing the book with giving the author or title.
Laura Carrington
One of my favorite book stores, love this place!
Alton Bradley
Eclectic bookstore downtown. Staff is exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful. I had to drive around downtown Asheville for at least 10 minutes to find a parking spot, but this is not Malaprop's fault.
Sara Glance
Such a great independent bookstore. They have a good selection of books and the atmosphere is very inviting and chill. They host a bunch of cool author events as well!
Eden B
My friend and I were visiting from out of town and decided to splurge on a pair of the "Blind Date with a Book" titles. We were both super pleased with what we got and had to stop ourselves from getting more! It's a cute shop with a nice selection.
Michael Davenport
We loved this place. It has a great selection of books. They have a lot of local authors and some small gift items that are great to give to add a local flare to any gift. There is a coffee shop inside that has good tea and coffee and you can hang out there and read.
My wife enjoyed the clearance books. They were very cheap and had a decent selection of them to chose from.
This is definitely an Asheville staple. I great local store in a town that takes pride in its locally owned businesses. I would definitely recommend a visit, even if its just to browse around.
J M
Nice bookstore! Wish there were more used options, but I get that with this location it's a out the tourists as much as it is the books.
Ginny Schlatter
Great ambiance and selection of books. They also had a fun coffee shop area inside as well.
Melina Richardson
Great book store. Lots of authors I was interested in. I loved the blind book with a date!
Mars Luren
This is may favorite bookstore for new books in Asheville. Well organized, good signage, beautiful displays, and friendly staff. Plus a good selection of notebooks, and a small section of graphic novels (though I wouldn't mind more, but there are other local places for those). Currently, for covid safety, they are requiring appointments and only taking locals. I appreciate this, and made an appointment really easily by phone from around the corner and was able to come in right away. You get an hour to browse, and it was really nice to be able to browse the books feeling safe because there's hardly anyone in there. A very peaceful and heartening experience during all this.
Jillian Adams
Always an amazing experience. The staff are top notch, it is safe to visit by making an appointment during the pandemic and always a great selection.
Severen Brown
Great local book store in Asheville. Many environmentally conscious books. Had a small cafe inside as well!
Jeff Giddens
How fortunate Asheville is to have a gem of an independent bookstore such as this one. Books are only the beginning of a pleasant and productive visit to this enchanting place. Kind, knowledgeable, and helpful people are the best part of dropping in here. Socially conscious, responsive, and responsible, the good people working here certainly know all about the literature they recommend but more importantly, they truly care about everyone who walks in the door. Their care shows in the way books and materials are artfully arranged along with messages from and to their community. Writers and readers will love wandering the aisles in this store. After discovering books you wouldn't typically see on Amazon or in Barnes and Noble, visitors can get a tasty treat and walk next door to enjoy the Open Market, the Earth Guild, or Woolworth Walk.
Dustin Stover
I avoided the actual bookstore as I was moving my things across country and trying to not add anything else; however, I did eat at the cafe and must say that it had a great cappuccino and croissant. I was there with family, who did spend time in the bookstore area and absolutely loved the selection. The feel of the place is also very comfortable. Definitely a place I would find myself frequenting if I lived in the area.
Nevernauts Music
This bookstore is so much more than just a bookstore! They have an amazing little cafe on the side that makes the whole place smell like delicious coffee, and a bunch of trinkets and gadgets and dewdaws for book lovers. Huge selection, well-organized, with a friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great selection of local authors, too.
Mich Davis
Wonderful independent bookstore, that's in tune with the locals.
Amanda Reed
Great local bookstore! We loved the "mystery" books. What a great idea - I was very nervous that I wouldn't like my book, but I loved it. Great local author and great read. I might never have picked up the book had it not been a mystery with great descriptor words. (Just in case its still one of the mystery books I won't spoil it by given author and title but would love to give him credit some time down the road.)
Brenna Nance
When asked what my favorite bookstore is, this is my go to. An awesome environment and always well stocked. The staff has always been very friendly and I love the events here. The member who runs the YA events most of the time (I believe her name is Katie) has always been so sweet to converse with and a great customer service rep. I wish all bookstores were like Malaprop’s.
Jenna Sunshine
Great bookstore! Awesome selection of books, a nice cafe, and a wonderful gift shop section with tons of adorable, funky, artsy, one of a kind gifts! We all loved this place! Went there while on vacation with my family and we ended up spending over an hour in there! I bought a book and a few gift shop items for myself (pretty reusable shopping bag, cute bookmarks, and some earrings) as well as gifts for friends (books, coasters, mugs, bracelets). Bookstores & gift shops are a dying breed so I encourage you to check this place out! As I always mention in my reviews when relevant, going here sports a small, local, independently owned business.
Barbara Ingram
This is one of my favorite stops to make in Asheville. I believe their coffee shop is open outside now, but pre-COVID it was inside the shop which was so nice.
They have a wonderful selection of books, but more than the books, it's their staff that makes this place really special. When Amy worked there, she could just choose a book off the shelf and hand it to me, and it would end up being one of my all-time favorites. Each staff member has a "staff picks" shelf. My advice is to find a staff member whose tastes match yours and go straight to their shelf when you walk in.
In this trip (since Amy is no longer there), I was fortunate enough to meet Carmen. I can now say, "thanks Carmen, That book you recommended is perfect!" The biggest issue I have when I travel to Asheville is having to ship back all the books! If you're a book-lover traveling to Asheville, you need to come here.
Noah Valentine Styles
I've been in love with this independent bookstore since I was a teenager. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and well read. Everything about Malaprop's makes me happy, from their book selection to their bathrooms. It's my favorite downtown destination.
Riley Osborn
I'm partial to bookstores that have access to snacks and drinks while I read, so I love this place! they have a wide selection, good staff recommendations, and a really cool bookshelf that has books packaged and wrapped so you can't see their title, only a few words to describe the type of book. it's good for getting out of a reading rut and trying something new!
Kyle Lewis
Cute bookstore and some titles you wouldn't find at a larger branded box stores would have. My only issue was that the staff did not engage once with us.
Mimi Jenkins
Fun little book store. Filled with eclectic books and nicknacks. Great place to lounge and browse.
David Alexander
Cool vibe to this store. Interesting book selection (s).
Kyle Carmichael
Wonderful bookstore that has a very personable vibe. I loved the blind date with a book section. The books were wrapped with brown paper and just had a short synopsis of the book, very interesting. I could probably spend a huge amount of time in here if my schedule would allow. Overall a very nice bookstore!
Christine Scott
Super cute bookstore. I really loved how they have a good staff pick selection as well as a banned books and "surprise buy" section. Really makes this place feel different from your average bookstore. They also sell lots of cute knick-knacks to purchase for souvenirs home. Staff wasn't the friendliest, but I was there to purchase a book, not interact with staff.
Evan
We come to this bookstore each year when visiting Asheville but this year they won’t let you come in unless you live in North Carolina! I had the vaccine months ago and love to buy books. I am not aware of any public health recommendation encouraging discrimination against non residents. Odd business move for an independent bookstore...
Rachel Stevens
I can't say enough good things about this bookstore--it has a great selection, its coffee is delicious, and its staff is so helpful. I bought a "blind date" book from their date-a-book collection and look forward to reading it soon.
Michael Fogle
Staff helpful and friendly. Have a very large variety of fiction and nonfiction. Small bookstore, but well organized so easy to move around in the store even when moderately crowded. Also have children's and teen titles as well as a section dedicated to NC authors. Have a coffee shop in the store. They also have "surprise books" that have been recommended by the staff but are wrapped up so you can't see the titles. If you unwrap and have already read it, just bring it back and they'll trade for another.
John Doe
Wonderful, small, independent bookstore. Could have purchased my items off of Amazon, but I would rather support small businesses like this so that they remain open to enjoy for posterity.
Zack Williams
Solid privately owned bookstore. The staff are very nice and helpful and the stacks are organized in an understandable manner. I did not get anything to eat from the cafe but I have only heard good things from my friends who have also gone. This store also does a great job of bringing in authors for release events and lectures.
Frank Hinshaw
This is my favorite bookstore. I live a good two hours away, but it is a place I have to stop whenever I am in Asheville. Really great, knowledgeable staff (so you can trust the staff picks). They host book signings and book clubs. Try a blind date book (books wrapped in brown paper with adjectives written on the wrapper describing the book). Basically, they are doing everything right which is how they are thriving in the age of Amazon.
Diane Holdgate
Awesome bookstore!! So many interesting books. Be sure to check out the blind fate section!!

I just had to write this. I ordered something online from Malaprop's on Independent Bookstore Day and they ended up canceling my order saying they sold out of the item. I was disappointed but it happens. No harm done. Imagine my surprise when I get a box in the mail from them with the item I originally ordered AND a book! They went way above and beyond and everything was wrapped so nicely. I will 100% be a return customer. Thanks so much Malaprop's!
Savannah Scala
Booked a reservation for my son and myself yesterday and just wanted to say the experience was amazing. Y’all are doing it right and we appreciate it so much! Going to the bookstore is one of our favorite activities and generally go every Sunday. Since COVID-19 we have dreamt of the day we would be able to come back safely. Thank you for making us feel safe and comfortable coming in.
Phillip Gill
This is a great bookstore in the heart of Asheville. It has a good selection of books with some great displays to help you find books you may have missed. It also has a great program where you can buy books based on description but the book is wrapped so you don't know what it is. The small Cafe is always a plus. Definitely a store worth a visit, especially if you enjoy books or bookstores in general.
Jeffrey DeCristofaro
A small-scale bookstore, yet surprisingly diverse in its selection and filled with a number of titles that you probably won't find available at a Barnes & Noble, not to mention good drinks and pastries. But really, the best part about it are the events held here featuring guest speakers from all walks of life - hell, I even met Gene Hackman and Anthony Zerbe here giving talks in my younger years!
Aaron “Kru Juice” Veverka
This was a fun experience, and not one I was intending on running into.
It's a book store, it has snacks and you can also have wine, which is awesome when you're having a luncheon with your book club (which is exactly what was happening when I got there).
Not only did they have the typical new best sellers, they also had classic books, books out of print and quite a number of collectible out of prints as well!
When I'm back in the state I plan on returning and enjoying the atmosphere.
Jeremy Garland
I loved this bookstore. It's nice but has a bunch of homey touches. A fair selection of current and classics, but not really enough space for a really good collection. All in all, a very nice bookstore. I especially liked the "blind date with a book" shelf. Very cool idea.
John Sanker
Too many signs warning about everything. Nice selection of books but not very friendly staff. No cozy nooks to enjoy reading or sampling the selection.
Carter Bowman
This is such a cute and unique bookstore! Def check this place out!
Meghan
Amazing selection of books. I left with many to add to my collection. They also have brown paper wrapped books to get a book "blind" which I think was a neat idea. They seem to have frequent events with authors in the main store.
Landon Tipton
Loved this little bookstore. They had books in Spanish and French which was very nice. The blind dates with a book is a really good idea.
Hannah Desmond
A locally owned book store. It was a great place in the past. Indie authors are no longer welcomed on the shelves which brings this place to the same level of every other book store. Through the years the people working in the coffee shop have been unfriendly and sometimes rude. This seems to be a requirement for working in the coffee shop. I use to love it, now, not so much.
Finn Grey
The store has a very nice calming atmosphere with plenty of books and journals to select from. The cafe is amazing and they have yet to mess up an order although their hot chocolate isn't my favorite. This is a great please just stop in right before going to a concert at the cellular center or if you just roaming around downtown.
Jacob Timmerman
The fact that a place exists that is a combination of the two greatest things in the world (coffee and books) is so awesome! The cafe has very delicious espresso drinks and one of the best baristas in Asheville. And the book portion of the store has an incredible selection that caters to every taste.
Lynda Engler
Great selection and displays, plus its well organized. Bought a title I'd been eyeing because it was one of their staff picks.
Theresa F
I had an incredibly special experience buying my son his birthday present! Erin took literally 20 minutes helping me order the perfect copy of a trilogy that I hope he will enjoy for the rest of his life. She made the experience meaningful to me. As a bonus, the atmosphere is always calm and comforting, they have an excellent selection both in- store and by special order, and obviously the customer service is superb. Thank you!
Cody Powell
Absolutely adorable book store and coffee shop! Very dog friendly, great selection and unique finds too!
Katy Allen
As of December 2020, browsing is by appointment only, but they will also order books for you and deliver them right to your car. I have loved this store for a long time and appreciate everything they are doing to keep their staff and customers safe.
Sam Edmisten
A one of a kind, eclectic INDEPENDENT bookstore in Asheville that is a staple visit every time that my wife and I visit that town. It's the kind of place that book nerds love because of selection and layout. They also feature guest author Q & A sessions and have a decent coffee bar.
Sebastian Ellios
I heard about this bookstore from a friend when I was living in California. When I made it to Asheville a few months later, this was the first place I went. I returned every afternoon for the next 5 days of my trip. Could not get enough of their atmosphere and beverages. My only regret is not getting to try them all. The customer service is excellent as well as their wit in naming their products.
justine shelton
Such a cool little place! They allow well behaved dogs (in the bookstore, but not the cafe). The staff is always friendly and helpful and the bathrooms are always clean. They have a "blind date with a book" section, for those that are adventurous or want a surprise, where books are wrapped in brown paper with a vauge description on the front. There's also a pre-release shelf of books that are free (though they prefer you buy a book if you're going to take a book). The cafe has MONSTOROUSLY large cookies and turnovers and wonderful coffee and teas 😊. A great place to relax, peruse, and buy some books!!
Christopher Tweel
This is one of the best bookstores ever. Not only are they deeply connected to the community in terms of special events and support of local authors but the staff is always on point in cultivating the collection, giving great recommendations, and just being amazingly knowledgeable about any question you might have. You cannot go wrong by stopping in, or using this place to find exactly what you need.
Joe Morelli
Great little bookshop. The employees are super helpful and very friendly. A coffee bar is located in the store as well.
Laura Poland
I've been visiting for decades and it never fails to draw me in for at least an hour of browsing books one can never find in you franchised boxed bookstore. Great staff picks and full of original Asheville flavor, which seems to be disappearing each year from this town:(
Megan Alexander McCullough
Great local book store with coffee shop. Lots of personality with staff picks and blind date books. They have a wide variety of books. It makes it easy to shop local with such a large selection.
Andre Janssens
This is an incredible bookstore. It's located in downtown Asheville which is in itself a charming place. My first visit here I found some books that you don't necessarily find in other stores. I particularly love the section "Staff Picks"...these people have great taste in literature; I've purchased a few of their recommendations and have never been disappointed. They also have excellent coffee of course. Every time I'm in Asheville I always visit this bookstore.
Walt Bankes
As you can see from all of the posts, this bookstore has it all.
I just thought I would add that their hot chocolate is good, too.
Lisa Cantrell
We've been here before but only stayed a few minutes (there was a lecture in the cafe and we were going to be talking) this time which felt-for me-like having the Gates of Heaven opened and then shut again. SO many books, several shelves of staff recommendations which are always helpful . One of those places that makes you really glad there is still such a thing as Indie Bookstores and that they are still surviving.
Annie Kopicko
Totally awesome bookstore. Thank you for existing and continuing to exist. Love the free gift-wrapping. Amazing service and knowledgeable staff. Great selection, especially of special-interest and regional offerings. Highly recommended.
Anne Margaret White
What a treat this place is! Lots and lots of books to pour over. Fun gift ideas tucked around. Loved the staff picks, but my favorite was the mystery date section - brown paper wrapped books with date-like descriptions. Super fun
Kaylee Wohlenhaus
The selection of if books is great and the staff are super friendly. You walk in and you are treated with the warm smell if coffee and new books. Perhaps you'll walk in on an author speaking about their book, or perhaps you want a nice area to sit and do some work.
J Ee
Really loved the experience of going to a local bookstore. Great selection, great service and a fantastic experience!!
Robert Moyer
What an independent bookstore should aspire to. One of the grandames of American bookstores, with knowledgeable, friendly staff and wide selection of books beyond bestsellers. Always featured regional and local authors and a rousing selection of signed books. Nice coffeeshop, lots of readings. Must stop.
Michael Ulmer
What a great bookstore! Love the staff recommendations and curated approach. I picked up a mystery-wrapped "blind date with a bookseller" which was a fun way to try something new. Definitely recommend stopping in and supporting this great local treasure.
Laura P
I truly love independent bookstores and this one doesn't just have wonderful knowledgable staff but a ton of atmosphere. It's kept a community feeling despite the downtown being overrun w tourists...
Heather Ray
Very warm and welcoming! The layout was great and excellent choices in stock. The employee choice shelf was my favorite! 10/10 recommend.
ViaVea Arts & Crafts
Yes their books are amazing. Yes their journaling section is out of this world. But Maddie and Annie at the cafe. They are what make me return again and again. They are attentive and make that extra effort to make you feel like you belong there. The coffee's good too.
Wes H
Locally owned bookstore and a staple of downtown. Malaprops has many sections of books as well as great spotlights on local and regional writers. There is a cafe in the store as well that serves coffee and tea as well as other drinks. There are usually book readings and author signings here as well. The staff is always friendly, kind, and helpful. Support local and get your books here!
Tami T
If you're in Asheville and you love to read, then make a beeline for Malaprop's! In a time where local bookstores are increasingly rare, how refreshing it is to walk into a store filled with printed books and more. Grab a cup of coffee and browse their extensive collection. Not sure what to read next? Then go on a "blind date with a book" by selecting a wrapped mystery book that contains a list of descriptors. That's how I found my most recent purchase, The Heart of the World, and am thoroughly enjoying it.
Kent Shaw
I'm always interested in visiting independent bookstores. And, well, I'm especially interested in the poetry section. Malaprop's is kind of known among poets because of its reading series--a point which made my visit even more poignant, as I wanted to see how this bookstore arranges itself with so much poetry traffic going through it.
Most surprising of all was the display table dedicated only to Copper Canyon books. I'm not sure I've seen anything like that before. And then there were books by the poets who will be going through to read. Another interesting point. I personally would have liked to find more surprises in the poetry section. But, then, I have really hopeful expectations for all poetry sections.
As a bookstore, I appreciated the bookseller aspect to it. The children's book section was fun and felt special for the kids. My favorite is Malaprop's have a blind date with a book section. My sister went for one of the books, and, major, major coincidence, the book that she picked out was a book she and I had been talking about just that morning. For that alone, it felt as though Malaprop's was a 6 * place.
Michael Miller
Really awesome book store! There are tons of books categorized out into different sections as well as a number of other cool items. The cafe is neat too, you can order a number of drinks here.
Erika Larson
If you miss the smaller book stores with plenty of character and and well organized selections, Malaprop's is the place for you. The staff is friendly and eager at assist when needed. I almost didn't make it further into the store browsing through the staff picks area alone. For anyone who enjoys reading, this store is a must when visiting Asheville.
Peyton Johnson
This is my favorite bookstore. I appreciate that they have ecclectic books you wouldn't find at your average bookstore. Really quirky and awesome atmosphere. Come here and support local business.
staz m
Very friendly staff at the cafe and coffee drinks were yummy. Appreciated that they had a variety of milk/non-milk options. In addition to the books (obviously!), cute selection of gifts, cards, magnets, bumper stickers and kids' toys. Visited with a friend with a baby and we were a bit surprised that the washrooms didn't have a changing spot.
Jamie Dillingham
Pleasant and warm independent-run bookstore and coffeehouse. It's nice to just go here, buy a book, and curl up with it sipping warm coffee as the rain pours down onto the city outside. They have cool literary merchandise too.
Jonathan Hayes
Love this place. Make sure to stop by anytime I'm in Asheville. They have the best selection of books, even the titles that you want but the big box stores don't sell. Plus they always have authors coming in to talk about their new books. I got to see one of my favorite people there and it was an experience that I'll never forget!
Robert H.
Such a nice bookstore. You do not see alot of these types of bookstores around anymore. A must see!!!
Chris Sparnicht
This independent bookstore offers great value for its placement downtown and the variety of books offered. There are events and there is a coffee shop. I'm not the only long-term patron who would fiercely defend this incredible landmark establishment as an important stop for any booklover's pilgrimage while visiting Asheville.
Yeshanth Jayakumar
I wanted to drop by here to read a book and have a coffee. Unfortunatley, I didn't get a place to sit. I roamed around and waited for a while for a seat. Maybe next time. I didn't look too much into their book collections. We well laid out bookstore that does gives you a feeling of a mini library.
It would be great if they have some sofas or additional seating. But I do see that they are constricted by space. I will give this place another shot.
Betty A
Locally owned. Let's keep our downtown that way. Many author talks and a small coffee etc lunch bar, like Starbucks but not. Cell phones off and no backpacks. (Put at desk.) Good selection of books esp local authors and historical of the area and most anything for a smallish place. Nice owners. Shop local and unchain Asheville!
Karson Childers
Book cost the same as barns and nobles but they have a wide selection of fun gifts and stationary. I always want to spend an hour in there at least. They always have authors coming though. Also during this hoilday they where offering free gift wrap and I think that is the cutest.
Miriam Rozian
Ideal selection for its size - a well-chosen mix of local content, current NYT chart-toppers and high-quality mid-list writers. Genre fiction and non-fiction represent best quality selections, not just most popular. There's a nice selection of reader paraphernalia (book bags, blank journals and sketchbooks, cards, pens, toys).
Though we didn't stop, the cafe seems inviting and the coffee aroma was pleasant.
Michael Williams
This place is great. It has lots of staff recommendations, and a Blind Date shelf where you pick a hidden book based on keywords that appeal to you. I bought one and it fit my tastes perfectly. They do a really good job with these (They also said I could bring it back if I already had a copy or really didn't like it).
Lance Blackstone
Best bookstore in town. Reasonable coffee. Helpful staff. Asheville also has some good second hand bookstores including one under the same ownership as Malaprop round the back and a small selection attached to the public library next to the US Cellular centre nearby.
Carol Nelson
So supportive of local authors . A real community atmosphere. Real appreciate all you are doing to assist in stopping the spread of covid. Great book collections. Clean, peaceful and welcoming atmosphere
Mariana Marcuse
Great little book store! Visited twice in one weekend. They had an event going on yesterday, so it was a bit crowded, but great staff, good selection of books, and I love their "blind date with a book" shelf.
Kris Tyndall
Fun bookstore with incredibly helpful staff
M J. G.
Community staple! One of my favorite places to have a coffee and a cookie and a book and hang out:) So sweet and enchanting. A good old fashioned locally owned bookstore with great staff and great coffee... actually, the bookstore staff is nice but the baristas are never smiling... kind of weird, but I love this place anyway:) Smile guys!
Jackie Franklin
Great locally owned bookstore. Friendly, knowledgeable staff, many activities for avid readers. Don't miss it if you love books. And the coffee shop is an added bonus!
Mary Megill
Nice book store in downtown Asheville. Great selection for any interests. They also have a good children's section. Worth stopping by.
Justin Mathis
Good selection though they have mostly new stuff, if your looking for a older book call ahead to see if they stock it. The mystery book shelf is actually pretty good gives you a random book wrapped up with a vague description to give you a good read without judging the book by its cover.
Dustin Truax
This is a lovely little bookshop! They have a section where the books are wrapped in brown paper so you can't see the cover; they then put a brief description of the book on it. If it sounds good pick it up and buy it to know the title. Great idea. I wish there were more places like this around!
Cheyanne Vanderdonckt
Great atmosphere and selection. They also have a small section of books in foreign languages.
Gina Holmes
Very easy process. I called in my book order and paid by phone. Since they have limited hours during the week, they hold the book for you until you have time to pick it up. When you're ready to pick up your purchase, you just call them and tell them where you're parked and they bring it to your car!
Lynn Roberts
Wonderful indie bookstore!
Hannah Garman
Great little bookstore with coffee shop. Had a quaint small town locally owned vibe. The space per customer flow was a bit small (even on a Tuesday afternoon) but the feel was quaint enough. I look forward to visiting again.
Scott Burau
What a perfect bookstore. Friendly staff, a massive selection across genres, and fun surprises like the Blind Date With a Book shelf. If you're in Asheville, you've got to check this store out.
Dr. Nancy Hyton
I love this local bookstore! From the well-curated selection of books and extensive calendar of author readings, to the Staff Picks and Banned Books sections, this is a bookstore by readers for readers. This is clearly a bookstore on a mission! Also, they have delicious chai in their cafe.
PJ Miller
This bookstore is everything you wish bookstores still were. Malaprops has a fantastic selection (kids too), staff who love books, visiting authors, book signings, coffee and it's right in the heart of Asheville downtown. Always a good New and Notable selection, interesting staff pics, and their "blind date with a book" thing is fun- staff selections are covered in brown paper with some descriptive words on the outside. You buy the book without knowing what book it is you're buying. A model for what a modern bookstore can still be.
Dawn Graham
A tad bit pricey but well stocked. It's MUCH bigger than it looks from the outside. Lots of categories but low stock on pagan selections. Check out their journal selection!
Blaise Dunsmith
Best bookstore in town. Barnes and Noble can suck it. They are very likely to have anything you want (amazingly large collection for such a small shop). It smells of coffee and books... what more do you want?
Zachary Sims
The best bookstore I have ever been inside. The staff are nice and knowlegable. The selection is also excellent. They have numerous featured sections which make the store feel unique. Highly recommend.
Helena Andújar
This bookstore's layout is inviting and everything is nicely organised. Besides books, it has a lot of cute and interesting stuff. The staff is helpful and professional. A great little place to spend a relaxing morning or afternoon.
Hannah Broam
such a fun indie bookstore! loved the selection of books and unique sections throughout the store -- especially enjoyed seeing the staff picks and the lots of pride-related books out for June.
Brian Hedrick
Cozy local bookstore with a wide selection and inside cafe. I especially liked the little trinkets they had for sale (bookmarks, pins, etc). Employees were very nice and more than happy to help me find what I was looking for.
Collin Davidson
Great selection of books with a neat section of regional authors and plenty of staff picks to narrow down your options. Plus, they've got some cool specialty coffee drinks to enjoy with a new book.
Chris Macmurdo
These are the kinda stores that I hope never go out of business to the Amazon's of the world. Great selection. Great staff. The store has a way of leading you to a new book to read.
Chelsea Lewis
This indie bookstore is one of the greatest joys of visiting Asheville. They have all kinds of books (bestsellers and new releases as well as classics and less well-known works, including a really interesting and quirky selection of graphic novels), a wonderful children's section, various book-themed knickknacks and gifts, an enthusiastic and well-informed staff, and a lovely little cafe with coffee and tea drinks and a few little pastries. I always block out several hours at Malaprop's when I visit Asheville. I hope it stays strong!
Ken Denk
How can so much inscribed wonder and joy be packed into a space that remains close and neighbourly, eschewing the book warehouse feel of chain stores?
Malaprops does it with tongue in cheek abandon, from the name to the witty banter that the staff will deploy, if you show the slightest hint of personality beyond that of a mere consumer drone.
Intelligent offerings, thought provoking displays, I've been here twice, loved it each time, spent more than I ought to, gleefully, and will damn well come here again.
And they have coffee...
X poet
Eclectic bookshop. Creative set up. Prices a bit high but expected of a small local bookshop. Selection of books is limited. Cafe inside with good coffee. Helpful information desk and friendly staff.
Ragnar Granfeldt
Amazing gem of a bookstore. Neatly organized and good prizes.
I always enjoy to visit bookstores in general, and in particular at new places I visit. This one in Asheville was a rather random encounter on a car trip from Miami to New York, but still one I remember almost seven years after the trip. I even bought a messenger bag with the store logo, that I still use today. Beautiful bag and great quality. Nice and subtle souvenir.
The collection of books is quite extensive, and everything is logically arranged. The general athmosphere is excellent due to cool staff, beautiful floors and the spacy rooms. It took the breath away from a simple Norwegian. I will definately go back on my next trip to the area, if my lungs can handle more of such breathtaking experiences.

My wife & I arrived almost an hour early for a show at NCStage (highly recommended venue), and asked there where we might grab a cup of tea. We received the recommendation for Malaprop's and the Chai Latte. It was a great beverage, in a wonderful atmosphere, and was exactly what we needed right then.
After we finished our drink and chat, we even had time to look around at some of the thoughtful book offerings and items for sell. We would return here again and probably be able to spend some time & money for another warm beverage, as well as some considered reading matter! Check them out.
About us: we are readers. (I enjoy audiobooks more these days for time spent driving.) We are also recent "empty-nesters" so we also enjoy exploring and nurturing our maturing relationship. Time together in a mutually-encouraging activity is always the sweetest! Chat, beverage, read, and time together is a precious commodity that we were given in our visit on this day.
Go!
Alyssa Casey
Amazing atmosphere. Buy a book, then have a seat at the cafe section with a coffee to begin reading it. Has an inclusive vibe for all likes of people. The 'Blind Date' with a book is super fun if you like a little mystery behind the book your buying.
Katie Poterala
Nice independent bookstore with some interesting offerings, including a nice selection of locally relevant books on crafts and other local interests.
The prices were a bit high, as to be expected for a store that actually has to make money off selling books.
Ryan H
This is one of my favorite places in Asheville and definitely my favorite bookstore ever. There’s just a good feeling in this place. Great book selection, awesome staff, add in the cafe and it’s hard to beat. Always make sure to stop in anytime we’re in Asheville.
David Cruz
There could be a better selection: especially in the metaphysical and self-help sections. It's more focused on "talking-head" exposes of current and historical events. But I truly appreciate a real bookstore that survives in the age of Amazon.
Malgorzata Daniel
Lovely bookstore. Very friendly stuff. Great selection of books presented in a very attractive way. Nice coffee shop inside. Really lovely vibe here
Patricia
Sweet little bookstore with lots of different genres. They even wrap up a book provide you with a genre and it's a mystery... It's like buying a present for yourself. You don't know which book is inside until you open it.
Linda Singleton
Love this place. Great atmosphere, great books, great customer service. Highly recommend their date with a book section.
Ashley Rice
My husband & I visited Asheville for our anniversary and this was honestly one of my favorite stops. They had a great selection of books. I wish we had a book store like this one in Columbia :)
Logan Terheggen
This is the best bookstore I've ever been to. It is enormous and has a variety of different books-contemporary to classics. Plus, there is a stylish bar/coffee area as well!
Michael Hetzel
This is a really nice bookstore. They have a wide selection and the staff are very nice. It's not a discount bookstore, but if you are wanting something where it's going to be full price or near full price then this would be where I'd go.
Paul Nicholson (pwnicholson)
Great selection. Very cute
Peter Larsen
Great selection, good staff picks, right downtown. Staff seems nice. The "blind date a book" is a fun idea
Hyacinth Burrowes
Due the pandemic, they are only open by appointment and for NC residents.
Nicholas Dudde
Very Asheville bookstore that has a cafe with great coffee, and lots of great books in many genres. Atmosphere is great as well, and it's located next to several other great attractions. If visiting, it is reccommemded to park in the Rankin Ave parking deck as it is the closest public parking that isn't a metered space.
emery c
Really quaint and cute locally owned bookstore. Not a large stock of books but there are special finds and a very cool collection of knick-knacks. Yummy coffee too! Parking is annoying though.
carly cogburn
They have wonderful customer service, they are timely, and their book packaging is nicely done. Would buy from them again. The book I ordered arrived without damage and in the time frame they promised.
Tori Drum
This was a cool place to go to. They have a large selection and the staff was super helpful. If I had to recommend anything it would be to buy their "blind date" books.
Sophia Rowland
Absolute favorite book store! Lots of interesting books and aisles to wander through. The cafe has lovely home-made soda as well.
mary jo Johnson
Malaprops is a treasure. A couple hours browsing there with a side trip to Downtown Books and News is one of my favorite treats. The staff are always helpful, there are great author events and you can buy your book and start reading while you enjoy a coffee in the cafe.
Edward Guyer
One of the best bookstores you can visit. Good selection of best sellers, unknown treasures and regional writers. Staff is very helpful and the atmosphere is very laid back and cozy. Buy something to read and then grab a coffee from the coffee bar and relax.
Amy Carlson-Jacko
We love this local bookstore! They have many author signings. We attended a busy author sign just recently and it was well organized. A perfect place to find your next favorite story!
Aram Shelton
Walking into a well stocked bookstore like Malaprop's is one of the simple pleasures in life. Plenty of titles, if only I had a place to put them all.
Wesley Miller
My wife and I have been visiting Malaprop's for years. Every time we pass through Asheville, it is a mandatory stop. We have been to indie bookstores all over the country, and this is one of our favorites.
Simply put: solid, good-sized collection of books; super friendly, engaged staff who all seem to love what they do; and an awesome location right in the heartbeat of Asheville.
Thanks for doing what you do, Malaprop's!
Patrick G
Malaprop's is my favorite bookstore in the world. I've come here for many years and always find something new and fascinating. The "Staff Picks" section is always worth looking at, and all the staff is very knowledgeable about the stock and literature in general. If you're going to Asheville, Malaprop's is not-to-miss... heck, it is a reason in and of itself to visit Asheville!
Alex Renfro
Try the mystery book shelf! They cover the book in brown paper and write descriptions on the paper wrapping. Really expanded my horizons, haven't had a bad pick yet.
Overall super cool local book shop, a must visit for locals and tourists alike, imo.
Callie Wolhart
A beautiful, quiet, and quirky coffee shop/bookstore! It's right in the heart of downtown, so a great place to stop in to grab a drink and/or a small snack while you are walking the streets and adventuring!
Michael Agee
Hold on you little independent book shop you. I've always had a dream to one day have a cozy library filled with books. At the rate the world is going, there won't be any books by the time that dream is a reality so seriously, hold on little book store.
Tammy K
Love this bookstore. Has its own personality. And I love its 'Blind Date with a book' section. It was tempting to buy them all, just to see what was hiding under the wrapping!
Ryan Matthews
Malaprop's is everything I want in an indie bookstore. It's equal parts irreverent sass and expert inventory. The staff are super friendly and helpful when you're trying to remember the name of that one book that came out last summer with the purple cover written by that one person or when you're searching for a gift for your 9-year-old niece who just got into graphic novels and is obsessed with outer space and Rosie the Riveter. It's been hard to resist shopping in person during COVID, of course. But folks, I just called up and asked for a recommendation and they were SO HELPFUL. Plus, they ship literally wherever. Trust me, I asked. Denmark even. Seriously WHEREVER, people. I'm eager to return for author readings when everything's chill again. Lord knows how bad a fella wants to sit at Malaprop's and listen to Wiley Cash and Bobbie Ann Mason shoot the stuff about writing & life. The good news is, it looks like the cafe is installing some sorta street-side pick-up order window action. Prolly gonna grab a coffee there and sit down with a book at that weird statue out front and pretend life is normal with all my other street people. BTW, you gotta hold the toilet handle down for a couple seconds to totally flush in the gentlemen's.
Gary Burge
The people of Asheville are very proud of our bookstores, and in particular, love Malaprops, the flagship of local booksellers. Whether it is the regular appearances of authors (well-known and newly published), its large inventory of books, or my personal favorite - the reading recommendations of its staff - one can spend hours happily browsing at Malaprops.
Gayle Tabor
We remembered the store from a previous visit to Asheville, it didn't disappoint this time either. Eclectic mix of books, local fair, and comfortable setting. Can't imagine we won't visit anytime we're near.
Morgan McCants
There is a limited selection of books but I do love the staff when actually in the store. I was double charged at the cafe side and the person who took my information never told me. I called to question this and the staff who answered was short and little curt. Otherwise I enjoyed visiting.
Kaitlin B
Such a nice little bookshop with a cafe. We didn't get anything in the cafe so can't comment on that but they have a good selection of books and the staff were friendly.
Theodore Sopher
This champagne bookstore is easily the most unique and eclectic mashup of places i've ever been. it has a certain romantic feeling and is captivating. Beyond that it's located in a beautiful space.
victoria Schutter
We love this bookstore and come in when we are in Asheville. Beware they are now open by appointment only for North Carolina residents only. I understand their caution but am super disappointed!
Kimberly Edwards
I visited for the first time last night for a book signing. The event was very well organized and the staff was genuinely kind. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a local bookstore to support.
gale gallager
Small bookstore but filled with amazing books. Cannot leave without buying a few books every time. Very helpful staff and really good coffee too!
Jennifer Haithcock
Big section of Staff Picks, which I enjoy looking at. Great selection, relaxed environment in the heart of a busy part of Asheville. Usually musicians outside the door. Frequent talks by authors.
Coach Terry Hamlin
An extremely cool bookstore! Asheville has a gem in this great book facility. I hope they will soon receive my new book, BUILDING A BETTER RUNNER for sale. Shop local!
Gadey Sicha

In Asheville? Your visit isn't complete without a stop at Malaprop's. They were ordering books for customers 20 years before Amazon existed. Fantastic cafe and excellent coffee. You'll lose half a day perusing the bookshelves.
Aaron King

A great bookshop and coffee house in Asheville. Though you might have trouble finding pop mass market titles, the variety of lesser-known works and publishers make this a regular visit for me when I'm in town.
Shreeda Segan
Definitely beats Barnes and Nobles despite having a more conventional leaning for a book store. We enjoyed the books they had on crafting and cooking.
Andrea Harris
Super cute local bookstore in downtown Asheville. The best part, of course, the the strong smell of printed paper that hits you when you walk in. There is nothing better than the aroma of the written word.
Al Thompson
Nice atmosphere for book lovers. The coffee was old...which blew a five star. My litmus test is a good chess book sellection. They passes!

Not the biggest book store I've been to... But excellently laid out and more than enough selection that I ended up buying at least three more books than I planned.

This sweet bookstore is a treasured Asheville icon. I love the staff, the book selection, eclectic array of cards and wonderful events they host. But it is the atmosphere created by the serendipitous blending of all these ingredients that truly feeds my soul. My love affair with the store began over 15 years ago when I would drive two hours each weekend from my then home in Hickory, NC, to enjoy the charm of Asheville. Being a book lover, Malaprops was a magnet. I was lured in by the aroma of delicious coffee wafting out to the sidewalk and by the interesting window decor. Once inside, the store was like a good book--I didn't want to turn the last page, didn't want my visit to end. Indeed Malaprops was the lure that hooked me into moving to Asheville. Once here it was a faithful, enduring anchor, nurturing my love of books and like-minded people until my roots took hold. Today, Asheville is truly homedespite my grousing about it's wild growth spurt. Malaprops has changed a bit through the years, but it is still that warm and welcoming space that I retreat to when I seek community, when I'm sad, when I need to recharge my batteries, when I just want to see the familiar faces that have become my friends over the years even though they don't know my name. This week I was lucky to be there to enjoy a reading by two-time poet laureate Billy Collins. Listening to him and meeting him afterward, I felt like a kid on Christmas morning. It is now several days later and the magic of Billy's visit is still with me. Thank you Malaprops for bringing him to your store. For this poetry fan, it was like Elvis or the Beatles coming to town and giving a concert in my living room. I'm still pinching myself!

It's the Shop around the Corner from You've Got Mail. This landmark bookstore and cafe continues to thrive in the heart of downtown Asheville despite the presence of discount stores at the mall and online. It's a destination, a must visit store.

Wow. Champagne cocktails and coffee and books and live jazz on a Sunday? Okay, alright, I see you Asheville. You don't play. Mad props to you. Malaprops. Walk through the Grove Arcade, then pop into this amazing bookstore. Read a book, listen to the music, sip something that'll warm you up, and enjoy the other humans you share this earth with.

As a visitor to Asheville, Malaprop's was impossible to tear myself away from. The first impression is impossible to ignore - immediately I felt welcomed into a world of wonder and incredibly passionate bookkeepers! I checked my bag at the counter and received a picture of Hayao Miyazaki, and as if that weren't perfect enough, the blind date book I picked out has been first on my reading list for months! It was just meant to be, and I'll absolutely make Malaprop's a must stop on any future Asheville trips. There truly is a collection for everyone here.

Very surprised the Malaprop's is hosting BDS advocate Jeff Halper. BDS clothes its program in the language of human rights. However they ignore human rights violations of the worst kind in Iran, under ISIS, under Boko Haram, in Saudi Arabia, but never miss an opportunity to point the finger at Israel. This is usually done by quoting verbatim Hamas and Palestinian Authority libels that make terror perpetrators victims, and ignores the actual victims of terror attacks. Moreover, if one does any research it comes to light that the BDS movement is not in favor of a two-state solution, or of peace, but rather wants a Palestinian state to replace all of Israel.
Seth Berger
