I had an amazing experience getting my manicure and pedicure done by Missy R. My feet and hands have never felt so soft with the paraffin treatment I got done. I did shellac for my hands and a basic pedicure for my feet and they look fantastic. Request Missy for your future nail services, she’s looking to focus on nails so she’ll appreciate any future appointments and is super professional and talented!

I was very pleased with my children's haircuts & mine! The students(Sadie & Taylor) I had & their instructor(Christine) were very professionals & pleasant. Sadie Richmond-Huebner cut my hair & my son's, she did great! I have fine thick hair and Sadie did great making my ends not look blunt. My son has a funky cowlick and his cut looked great. It was the first time my son didn't complain after getting his haircut, she did a wonderful job 😊 Taylor Wilson cut my daughters hair & did a bang trim. My daughter is soft spoken & shy, Taylor did great communicating with her and doing the cut she wanted!

Mal was a sweetheart and very entertaining to talk with while she cut my hair. She listened to my feedback and made adjustments so I got the cut I wanted. I have gotten haircuts at beauty schools before but Themis was my first time at Aveda, and the supervising instructor seemed much more helpful and knowledgeable than those at the other schools. The end result was definitely a great value for $15 and I only made some very minor adjustments to Mal’s work and I definitely intend to return here for my next fade.

My pedicure with Karissa (Kris) was such a treat! Kris paid special attention to the areas of my feet that needed extra love from being on my feet all day. The massage, exfoliant and parrafin wax were great! You can tell Kris loves what they do and they're good at it. Made an appointment to get my hair done with her! She also suggested some products to keep my hair hydrated and nourished.

Got a haircut from Megan and it was the best haircut I've ever gotten. She was super friendly, was very careful to make sure she understood what I was going for, and was happy to talk to me about products and ways to keep it looking the way I want. Saw a lot of comments here before I went in about how the haircuts take too long. It's definitely true that mine took longer than a normal haircut, and yours might too. But if you know that going in and plan accordingly, it's 100% worth it.

Good service for the price, but I would be happier if the instructors always made a final inspection of the work by the students. On one recent visit, the instructor did not inspect the final cut, and I had to make my own adjustments to the cut once I got home. The students have always been pleasant and gracious to me. I will return for services.

I got a simple haircut from a really friendly and skilled student. It did take quite a long time (almost 2 hrs) but the online booking system does estimate 1 1/2 hrs~ depending on the service, so i was prepared for that (they are still learning after all). It was extremely affordable too - I'd like to try some of their other services next time.

The experience was great, both my hairstylist and my waxer did a great job (even with this being my first time getting my legs waxed!) I left feeling pampered! Dropped a star because no one told me I couldn't tip at the end, so I ended up leaving both of these incredible stylists without a tip. Next time I'll bring cash so I can tip directly.

Veronica was amazing! Came in for a little bang trim on my mullet thing. She double-checked with me before any cutting to be sure they didn’t go too short. She also gave me fantastic styling tips (that actually worked when I tried them days later) with products she knew I already had and without trying too crazy upsell me on new products. Asked for layered haircut for a longer hair. The haircut was okay - which was expected for price and learning status. For haircuts, I would lean towards getting just a trim to your split ends (no more than an inch off). And make sure you wash your hair when you get back. Their haircare or tools must have given me a large pimple near one ear. The service by all staff was great. However, I will probably stick with professional hair salons for haircuts for now.

I had a wonderful first experience at the Aveda Institute Portland this week with Stephanie. It was my first proper haircut since the beginning of the pandemic, and I was excited to freshen up my look. I brought pictures, and explained my concerns, and Stephanie listened attentively, and consulted with her instructor Anthony about the best approach going forward to give me optimal results. She was fun to interact with, and she made the whole process positive and I still feel like I was pampered even though it's technically a school and not a spa/salon. The front desk staff was also very friendly and helpful on the front and back end with their knowledge of products, and the customer service level from start to finish was great. I love that I can get a great cut/experience at a fraction of the cost, and the students benefit as well. I've already rebooked with Stephanie, and highly recommend!

Rafael was absolutely amazing! I took my 8 year old in to get a long bob and bangs. He was so kind to her and talked to her the whole time. Her hair looks so good! Afterwards he let her play with a manikin and blow dry and paint, it was so cute! Thanks Rafael, this is memory she’ll treasure.

My appointment was at 230pm. I arrived early at 2pm because I walked. I think they forgot about me because 4 other people came in around 230pm and were escorted in for services. Around 250pm, I asked if they forgot about me and they said yes. So around 3pm, I was welcomed for a haircut. The student and teachers were friendly, fabulous and my haircut came out perfectly. Love Aveda even when I have to wait longer than expected.

Had a few haircuts here over the years. The students are nice and I love supporting their education. On the other hand, the most basic services take a looooong time (over 2+ hours for a simple haircut) and the results are mediocre.

Feel the Need to Read

If you're in need of a haircut and not tied to a specific style, sign up for a session with one of the students in training. I'm so happy with my cut - my student (Belle M.) was professional, thorough, and did a great job. She took the time to go through all the school's protocols but also asked me detailed questions about my natural tendencies. Because the students are under close supervision of mentor professionals, I feel like I got three stylists for the price of one (which is free). A total win win!

Aveda is a great place to get discounted spa and salon services, but obviously keep in mind they’re still students. I’ve had some nice haircuts here but the real star of the show is the tulasara facial. I booked my appointment with Kacey S who is so lovely and professional, she’s in school for a few more months so go get an esthetician service from her! ❤️

I've gone to the Institute for 4 or 5 years now, and have had haircuts, weaves, brow waxing and tinting during that time. Every 6 - 8 weeks I've had a haircut there. My cut is short and fairly complex, combining 3 styles into 1. Consistently I've had a very good cut (some better than others). I never worry because the instructors are very good and direct the students when they need it. I always get compliments on my hair, and recommend the Institute for anyone. It's a great value, and they treat their clients very well.

I've been here about 10 times over the past 4 years, and I've nearly always been satisfied with the work. The students do a great job!! And the instructors help make sure it's what you want. My issue with it is it often takes a long time.... like 4-5 hours for highlights and sometimes 2 for just a haircut. The prices are amazing, but they are raising them. It used to be 30 for highlights but now it's 50 plus extra bowls if you have long hair. Still I keep coming back because it's affordable and always looks good after.

I came to Aveda a few weeks ago for a quick trim after a recommendation by a friend. I was pretty amazed at the quality of the service for the price. My hair isn't the easiest to deal with since it's so curly. But Tarah did a great job and I specifically remember her instructor Nicole helping walk her through what ended up being a fantastic blowout. They were both great and it seemed like Nicole was really busy with other students but she kept checking in on us during the cut and it was really nice to know there was someone with experience so close on hand. She definitely made me feel at ease considering I don't usually come to schools like this for haircuts. I'm definitely going to come back the next time I need a trim. Maybe I'll try a color service next time too!

I came because Aveda has the best prices in town. I used to frequent the Aveda Institute in West Los Angeles and have always had great experiences. I have to say my experience was amazing. It was a really dramatic cut--14" of long black hair. My stylist, Jordan, was so fun to work with and knew exactly what I wanted. I have been getting haircuts and brow waxes from Angelina for a few months now, and I love everything she’s done for me. On my first visit, she patiently listened to the issues I was having with my hair and gave me the perfect cut to solve them. I recommend that you book as early in the day as possible. I've been rescheduled twice at this point, once because the students were running behind schedule, and once for leaving early due to illness (yes, of course, no issue), and have yet to see a stylist. Just a trade off that comes with the access to the Institute; it's very dependent on the student availability.

Second time coming here and i am very pleased. Got several services including eyebrow, underarm wax, and haircut. My stylist Maddie D. Was awesome and incredibly patient with my dog who was hanging out with me during the wax! She did a great job on my brows and listened to my requests of leaving as much volume as possible. She also did my hair and I enjoyed chatting with her the whole time! Aveda is an awesome full service salon and i will definitely keep coming for all of my styling needs. So glad i found this place!

I have been here three times now for haircuts. The first time was okay, he had the right idea about what I wanted but didn't have the finesse to finish the cut. But I understand that he's learning so I wasn't going to complain. The second time I had the most amazing hair cut ever! I was so lucky with my stylist that I booked with her again (Kim). She took nearly two hours to cut my hair the first time but when she was done it felt like I had had a professional cut. The second time she did it in just under an hour and my hair felt just as amazing as when she cut it before. I will definitely be a client of hers after she graduates! I feel like the students can be hit or miss, but once you find the right one, you can keep booking with them. The front staff have always been friendly and the teachers are always around to help.

My first time at the Institure for a service. The front desk was fantastic checking me in and checking me out. So friendly and professional. I had a facial. The facility in this area was not fantastic, but served the purpose. My student aesthetician was great. You have to remember this is a learning place, so finery is not expected. You’ll get great, earnest attention. And I did. Would go back for other services. Wish I needed a mani or pedi, but I don’t right now and am traveling through. Next time.

She consulted with me about my hair, my hair color desires, and even gave me great tips on styling my curly mane. I was seen by Jasmine W., who was so lovely to talk to. I was on vacation in Portland and was familiar with the Institute as I use it back home in Philly. I received a root touch-up where she also pulled the color through to the ends for a more uniform look. This job took 3 hrs since all the girls were waiting in line to have their dye mixed by a Supervisor. Jasmine explained that there was a shortage of Supervisors due to covid and a surplus of students working. Since my appt time was in the afternoon I think Aveda should have warned incoming customers of the extra wait for dye jobs. Being as I was on vacation I was not happy to waste away 3 hrs on my hair. Other than the wait, she did a good job and I'm happy with the results. The Institute took a lot of safety precautions but what would have helped is greater transparency and communication about the effects of their staffing shortage.

Her educator, Nicole, was extremely hospitable during my visit. Both of them consistently checked in on me to make sure I was given everything I had requested. I have gone twice to the Aveda Institute Portland for a haircut in the last 8 months and both experiences have been really positive. My stylists were interested and engaged and thoughtful in their approach, listened to what I said I wanted (even when I said I wasn't sure beyond having some length cut off!) and both times I came away with really great cuts. I've had some wonderful experiences at the Aveda Institute! I get my hair colored here, and will occasionally have bang trims done here in between appointments with my regular hair stylist. The student I see currently is Dede, and she's been one of the best I've worked with. Dede is not only excellent and efficient in her work, she is personally delightful to work with. She is sweet, friendly, professional, and demonstrates care for/interest in her clients. I've also seen Cynthia here, and she's equally as wonderful! I see both Cynthia and Dede and usually go with whomever's schedule aligns best with mine in a given week. I'll miss them both when they graduate!

I’ve been coming to Aveda for over 6 years. My first ever experience was responding to a student that needed to do a free haircut on a model. When I showed up, the student no showed. I was fit in by a different student. She and Instructor Bryan cut my hair into a magical asymmetrical pixie cut. I went to the same student for two years and it was awesome. She even did my hair at my wedding. Most of my experiences since then have left much to desire with a few exceptions. When I think about it, the experiences that weren’t great were mainly because the students are not required to follow basic customer service protocol. Many of the students seem they need more structure to the way they interact with customers. This will set them up for their future careers. My recommendations: set the students up with a customer service checklist, they greet the customer with a smile and handshake, they show them their station, ask them how they are and if they’ve been to aveda before, if they want tea or water, ask about things like if they have preferred products or any special considerations like a sensitive scalp, go into the general questions (what do you like about your hair etc.) and then make sure they’re letting customers know when they’re leaving the station, how long they’ll be gone, have them explain to customers what’s happening. My most recent student experience was saddening. This student clearly was not confident in her skills and had terrible customer interaction skills. I cancelled the hair cut that I was scheduled for after the hair color because I didn’t feel comfortable with the student. Please put more basic customer service training into your curriculum. Your students and the public will greatly benefit from this. Yes, this is a learning salon, BUT if you’re taking appointments from the public, their needs to be better structure for the students so they can start to build their confidence in interacting with clients. It’s very obvious to me which students have job experience and understand true professionalism, and the students who do not. I will continue to come to the school, as I generally have good experiences. However, for the success of your students and future students, I beg you to consider adjusting your curriculum to include more customer service training right from the get-go, before they take appointments from the public.

I highly recommend Aveda Institute to anyone. My hairdresser was a student named Sheri Cameron-Mendes - I will always make sure to request her for my future hair appointments. She did my hair exactly the way I wanted it, which can be so hard to find. They also use high quality products on your hair, leaving you hair feeling soft, shiny, and smells so good! She also waxed my eyebrows and did an amazing job! I will back again soon, thank you for an amazing salon experience!

I have been going to the Aveda Institute for two years now at 3-4 weeks interval. The first two ladies who cut my hair were excellent. They progressed at an amazing speed over the few months they cut my hair. The last two students though left something to be desired. They do not seem to have good time management skills. Twice now I received called on the day of the appointment to say that the students simply did not show up. And another two times, their previous service was running longer than they expected, so I was asked to work with another student or rescheduled. Very unprofessional behaviour!

The cuts take a little longer than is my personal preference but they're students and I completely understand. With each haircut an instructor came over at least three times to check the progress. This place is AMAZING! When I came here for the first time, over 10 years ago, I was desperate for a color fix to repair the damage of a very high profile salon. A colleague referred me to the Aveda Institute of Portland. The prospect of a “beauty school” was concerning...BUT, it was a $200+ salon that got me into the horrifying situation I found myself in. They listened, they asked really good questions, and they gave me yummy tea...I was obviously not happy. I left so happy. My hair color was back to a silky chocolate color and my curls were back to their springy selves. As we ring in 2020, I no longer work in a conservative office. I work with my husband, Aaron and I can have any color I choose. I was walking out of my last appointment on a beautifully sunny Portland day(I came every 4-6 weeks rain or shine), and someone tapped my shoulder and said that I looked like I had crushed rubies on my head. She was right, that is exactly what my hair looked like. When I was ready to change my color to be more “me” the student and instructor were awesome! Again, they asked the right questions. Instructor Tamesha is such a valuable asset and her knowledge base is vast, plus she is super fun. Mara, Natana, Aisha will be graduating soon, wherever they land will be lucky to have them. This might be a learning environment, but this salon is the real deal.

Overall A great place to come and get your hair done. The services are priced really well and are based on the amount of product you used, not by hour. I came in for a full highlight and ended up paying $30 for a service that would have cost me $200+ at any other salon. My friend Gabby is a current student there and has been doing my hair for the last 6 months at Aveda. The services have turned out great each time I’ve been in. Keep in mind this is a school and the students are being instructed by stylists whenever they need help, so it might take a little longer than a regular salon service, but the wait time is well worth the price you pay in the end. The only complaint that I have about Aveda is the check in process. I’ve been to the school 5 times now and each time I have to fill out first, last name, phone number, email, and if the service is for a minor. I wish that since the appointment was prebooked and my information is already in the system that I didn’t have to fill everything out each time I went in. They need to improve the system for convenience of checking in to make it a quick and easy process. A minor annoyance, and nothing too serious. Overall I’m pleased with the results from Aveda and have enjoyed getting my hair services done here.

I received a Tulasara facial and a pedicure, I added a paraffin dip to my pedicure. Both services were amazing. I received a very thorough consultation with the student and the student the was shadowing. They then went and got their instructor and she came in and looked at my skin, both confirming the students treatment plan and adding some helpful tips. The instructor also had a new instructor shadowing her which I thought was really awesome. This was an undercover mission for myself as I was considering applying to work at the institute as an Educator. I loved everything I saw, and am now employed with the company. When I finally (after waiting 40 minutes) was assigned a stylist, she did an excellent job following the instructor's guidance on coloring my hair. It looks great and I've had several compliments. The organization of the Institute could use some improvement. After waiting 20 minutes someone told me that they couldn't find the stylist that had originally been assigned to me. They tried to locate a 2nd stylist, to no avail. The 3rd stylist was professional, had a good sense of humor, and did a great job. Note: It will always take longer at the Institute due to the stylist looking for towels, finding instructors (2-3 times) during the process...so if you've got plenty of time, give them a try. On a tight schedule, go elsewhere.

I’m a former esthetics student, I have mixed feelings about Aveda. There’s a few things good a few things that are not so good. Such is life. I have no complaints about my education. Everything I wanted to know was easily accessible. 10/10 would recommend. I can’t speak for all of the teachers but the two I spent the most time with were Lisa and Danny, they were both sweet and put a lot of time and effort in making sure you feel confident in your own abilities. On the downside the place is a bit of a hot mess with booking. Some staff aren’t as kind as others. Things are a bit worse for the wear. It happens. I’m sure the booking stuff will eventually be resolved. People have bad times and act in ways they shouldn’t. I don’t blame the school for not immediately replacing stuff; students break and steal things. It’s got its problems but overall the education is good.

Overall I love it here! I have had great experiences. The only thing is that in my last visit the instructor changed 3 times and they seemed to have given the student stylist contradicting advice as well as quickly cut/modified my hair cut to teach her whatever method. They didn't do much consulting before seemingly haphazardly cutting huge chunks out of my hair. I think the instructors need to spend a bit more time seeing what the student stylist was doing and what I wanted before just cutting. That being said, that experience was odd for me. I've gone here twice before and my stylists cautiously checked in with me and the student stylist before doing anything. They were very considerate and did tons of consulting with me to make sure I'm happy. So, not sure if something was up that day or perhaps the student stylist wasn't confidently speaking up about what we were doing before the instructor changed everything.

I brought my daughter in for a free back-to-school- haircut. The place was PACKED and even the student stylist said everyone was overbooked. My daughters haircut was exactly what we had asked for, we love it. My only complaint is that the instructor was insistent that she have the 'finishing touch' and made the student take us back up stairs just to put make up on her. Shouldn't it be the parents decision? My six year old doesn't need make up. Otherwise a pretty good experience.

She washed my hair with a very nice head massage. After she cut it, it was the PERCECT length. She did an amazing job cutting it to a the perfect short length. I get regular facials and waxing here, and I love it! My pro tips for a great experience: 1. If you don't like the student that did your facial, request a different one. They all have their own style. 2. If you don't like something, speak up! No one is a mind reader, and students don't have much past experience to guide their intuition. 3. Services will take the entire time they estimate. Because it is a teaching environment, there may be some waiting while the student hunts down an instructor or stands in line for products. But hey, more time for you to relax!

I go to the Aveda Institute in Portland a few times a year, mainly for facials, mani-pedis, and brow waxes. The prices can't be beat, the students always do a lovely, thorough job, and the instructors are there to check off on all services. The only down side is that if you schedule multiple services on one day, when you arrive on the day of your appointment, you will usually only be able to have one service done due to the fact that students are absent for whatever reason (sickness, emergency, whatever). This has happened to me every time, so just be prepared for that.

His teaching methods are effective in making sure we understand information that tends to be boring and dry. He balances the time effectively between practical and hands on. He uses constructive criticism - always pointing out our strong points on the haircuts and also where we can improve it and make it better. He believes in his students, and it shows in his attitude and in how he teaches. Sometimes when a student tries something new, they don't always believe in themselves and they begin to question why they are pursuing this passion. It helps when you have an instructor who does believe in you. Jeremiah, I believe, is passionate about hair sculpting and styling too. That is reflected on how an instructor teaches and presents the curriculum. I think that is also why he is such an amazing instructor. He teaches about something he may enjoy doing.

I get facials here all the time and they are amazing!! They are very in expensive but the same quality products and massage techniques as an actual spa. This is a school so services vary from student to student but I have never had a bad experience. The instructors check in throughout the service and help keep the student on track. Because they are students services can run long and don't always start promptly. If this is something that will not bother you then this is a great place for beauty related services. I have a facial once a month and my skin has never looked better!

I love this place! I find it hard to budget for coloring my hair (which is a non-negotiable in my life), so thank goodness for the Aveda Institute! There is no way, anywhere in town where you can get services at such a low price, even with Groupon. It’s not a compromise, though, since you can always rely on quality Aveda product and expert execution because, even though students are purveying the service, veteran instructors make check points during every phase of your visit. The only disadvantage that I can imagine is that services may take longer at the Institute, but it’s worth the money saved. Moreover, I feel great about supporting a company that is altruistic... The Aveda brand is concious of environmental and humanitarian issues, and I even got a discount for taking public transit. Fantastic!

You have to sign a waiver because this is a school and the people working on you are in the process of learning techniques. It's not uncommon for a haircut to take two hours, but if you're like me, haircuts are super relaxing so I don't mind! They give you a mini-massage and wash your hair with yummy smelling Aveda products. They have to have their teachers sign off on the haircut concept and/or color before beginning. Haircuts range from $12-$18 plus tip. I have also come here for facials and massages-- their prices are already quite low, but their punch cards for repeat customers make it even harder to resist coming back over and over again. I have probably had 30-40 haircuts at Aveda Institutes over the years and have been overwhelmingly pleased with the results. A couple times, I've had some odd unevenness, so I'd say if it's right before your wedding or an interview or something, maybe spring for a non-student at another salon.

Well, I went in for my bi-weekly military style high and tight which I am VERY PICKY about. After 15 years with the US Marine Corps as a Navy Corpsman I require my hair to look "inspection style" squared away. I got scheduled with Liz Jayo and she turned out to be AMAZING!! I would have actually believed that she has been working at a base barber shop for years. She genuinely cared about getting my cut perfect and was a hoot and a half to talk with. She made the trip to the Pearl WELL WORTH IT from Milwaukie. I will be seeing her every 2 weeks and when she graduates, I will just have to go wherever she winds up working. 5 stars!!!!!!!!!! I've gone to Aveda many, many times for various services. In my opinion the best services to get at Aveda schools are the facials and waxing services. Facials-- can be customized based on your skin concerns or what you're looking for (relaxation, redness). As for waxing, I've never had a bad experience. I love blue wax. Tips: The tea that they serve is amazing. TRY IT. Chat with your student. Even if it's just a little bit, you'll learn a few things. Find out how far they are in their program. If you really enjoyed your service, book again with them. You can also try to keep it touch after they graduate and do services on their own. Be conscious of parking and plans after your service. Appointments can often run a lot longer than you'd expect. Over communicate. You'll never get what you want unless you speak up. Be understanding. You're paying a fraction of the costs. You're being serviced by students. Be nice!

I had a decent experience here at AIP as a student. I got a ton of experience and really perfected my craft. Im the type who put my head down and did the work I needed and stayed out of the drama. I’m not sure it’s worth spending the extra money to go here as now I see all beauty schools are pretty much the same. Management at AIP is pretty terrible at least at the front desk. I understand students to them could be frustrating (missing a ton of school, refusing to take services, leaving the building without telling anyone) but I never felt respected and I was always a student who didn’t miss a day and took every service I could. I think they have some things to work on but the majority of the educators were great and really cared about me and I never had an issue with the admissions office either.

You have the choice to have your hair done by a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior. You are truly idiotic if you think they wont make mistakes. My boyfriend and I have both had our hair done here and have never been disappointed because we choose to pay a little extra ( He opts for Juniors since he goes with a very simple cut and I pay for a senior to trim my layers and bangs since my hair can be difficult ). They are better than Great Clips and they charge less. Always remember THEY ARE STUDENTS AND ARE STILL LEARNING THE TRADE.
