Went in for all over color and was put in a different direction and I’m happy about! I love the natural look of it and Erika W. Did a fantastic job! I loved that she asked the instructor questions all throughout to make sure she was doing everything correctly. I really appreciated that she left my length. I’ve had trouble with hair stylist not listing and cutting too much off. She did a perfect trim and color! I’ll be going back to her for my touch up in a couple months! 10/10 recommend trying this amazing school out for your next hair needs!

Kaya and Bella did a great job on my makeup! They were so sweet and knowledgeable about all of the products they were using. I decided to try getting my makeup done for a formal dance and I didn’t really have anything in mind. They showed me some pictures and put their own spin on one of the pictures that I liked. I loved the final look and I got lots of compliments. Definitely will be returning! Thank you Kaya and Bella :)

Cameron and Natalie were both extraordinary and I was a little upset that I couldn't tip Cameron. I haven't ran into such top notch customer service (for lack of better term) in a couple of years. It was refreshing, therapeutic and I would recommend this to everyone that wants to get their hair cut or anything else that they want done to their hair.

I got color done and did two different colors on two different sides of my head like a half and half. She did my hair very fast and efficiently and it came out beautiful and exactly how I pictured it.

Alexia did an amazing job mixing the “ingredients” to create this violet color! Alexia’s attention to detail exceeded my expectations. Alexia was so kind and patient. Natalie S. did an amazing job on my color. She took her time and was very detail-oriented. I am particular about having natural brunette color. Natalie gave me what I wanted - there was no dreaded halo effect, and she managed to keep the body and the ends of my hair very gradually lighter than the roots. Hallelujah! I left with a rich brown color that had depth and natural ends - no shoe polish effect. She was sweet and easy to chat with, and she had no problem asking her instructors when she needed a second opinion on something. The instructors were all visible, friendly, and inspired my confidence. The front desk attendants were all welcoming and very helpful. The only reason I gave four stars (I would have given 4.5, but it's not possible) was because of the crazy amount of dust on the ceiling and light fixtures, as well as the hair/dust bunnies on the floors behind all the stations and chairs. It's a beautiful building with easy parking in the ramp across the street. The chairs at the stations and in the shampoo room were all very comfortable. Other than the dust, everything was amazing, and I definitely plan to go back to Natalie.

I went to Douglas J wanting to even out the original bleach job I had done and Sophia did such a great job! She let me know that because my hair was already so broken, it’d be best to go with a smudge root which is what we did. The blending was flawless and my hair feels so much healthier. Professional service for such a lower price!

Hope was excellent, my hair looks beautiful. My highlights are placed in a flattering arrangement and the color compliments my skin tone. Hope asked a couple times if I wanted tea or water, ensuring my comfort. Meghan, the instructor was attentive to all of Hope's progress in my hair service. The students were so supportive of each other; Hope was a natural tutor and it spotlighted her passion. Stop in to have Hope brighten your day.

I had a facial and eyebrow wax performed by Angela. She was extremely personable and knowledgeable with skin care products. She knew exactly what my skin needed, and it was glowing afterwards. Besides her professionalism and passion for what she does, she made me feel valued as a human being and was very accepting/inclusive. Overall, the salon itself was very clean and well maintained. All staff I encountered were excellent! My expectations were exceeded and I will definitely get more services through Aveda.

I had the best facial I have ever had with Maggie. My face is tricky; a combination of oily and dry, acne, and maturing. She knew exactly what to use for my masks and treatments. My face felt so hydrated and healthy afterward. It's still glowing. I'm extremely impressed. Her relaxing massages are amazing, she seemed to know exactly how much pressure to use and where I needed extra time spent. Although the foot massage was amazing, her scalp massages... 🫠 I would skip the foot massage and get more of that any day! Hurry and see her before she graduates early February! You won't regret it!

Truly gifted, amazing experience. Douglas J is an amazing school that has high expectations and provides opportunities for people that are not high income to experience very high end spa services. In times that I’ve gotten massages, the masseuse will come at you with their hands quickly and I was happy that she was slow to approach me to ensure I wasn’t startled by her touch and presence.

Kaya Dean was my stylist and was an absolute queen; she's incredibly sweet, very knowledgeable about the products, and very kindly explained what each did and what dye mix was best for my hair — as I went back to my darker hair from a faded pink. She revived my hair by pampering my strands with a much needed trim, a malibu detox, protein & conditioning treatments, and bringing volume & vibrancy back! I admit, I had been maintaining the color of my own hair for several months, and I had certainly caused some damage, BUT Carlie knows the value of healthy hair, and I certainly appreciate it! After she rejuvenated my poor hair, Carlie & blended my roots and toned my hair, and now has all the body & shine... I rocked my hair at the wedding! Yesterday I went in for a trim/layers/bangs situation for a little hair refresh before a big move and new job. Jordan Williams did an amazing job! She told me I was her first client and though she was super nervous she had nothing to be nervous about- she killed it! She took her time, triple checked everything, and was diligent about consulting with the educators. Additionally, she was an absolute pleasure to chat with! This hair cut gave me the confidence I needed for my big move, and should give her the confidence to know that she’s an amazing stylist with tons of potential!

The intro instructors, Rachel and Taylor are very down to earth and great to learn from. They both are incredibly hands on and happy to answer any and all questions. Sue is the gamma instructor and she has really taken my education to another level. She does whatever she can to make sure we are comfortable providing any and all services. She also takes the time to teach additional techniques to new esthi students. The front desk coordinates our appointments flawlessly and welcomes us each morning with a smile. I cannot say enough good about this school. If you’re thinking about attending a cosmetology or esthiology program, this is the best in the area!

I asked the stylist and her instructor which would be my best bet. Holy moly - they had a great idea & executed it perfectly. Emily did an amazing job & her instructor was amazing as well. I got my hair dyed by a young stylist with orange hair. She did a great job working with me to find a color because I was inside of what I could get and seemed to do well applying the color. However, there were a few things that felt a little off to me. Throughout the process, it felt like she didn't really want to be there/ or was not enjoying what she was doing. She spent the time talking a bit to her friends that were at stations next to her and hardly said a word to me. Then after the application and the processing time, she rushed through the process of rinsing my hair leaving red all over the sides of my face, chin, and neck. Meanwhile this entire appointment took four hours to complete. I know they're learning and I am not upset with how my hair looks, just slightly disappointed with my experience.

I always truly love coming here! You are greeted so warmly when you sign in and are asked if you want any water or tea. I am IN LOVE with the tea, it is soooo good! After you’re checked in when the students are ready they come and grab you, if you don’t know them they introduce themselves and are always soooo friendly! I’ve had MANY services done here already. I’ve booked with Zoe Dehaan ever since she started and every single service she’s greeted me with a warm smile and always remembers my name. She has worked so hard to make sure that every service is up to both my standards and Aveda’s and always is so open and receptive to criticism. I’m sad that she is graduating this week but she will be PHENOMENAL at any spa that she works at. I came in for a haircut and waxing before my wedding this coming weekend. Caitlyn trimmed my hair. She got the dead ends off while preserving as much length as possible. Looks happy and healthy again! Alejandra did my waxing and was personable, professional and thorough. She is graduating soon and I know she will be a star at any spa she chooses to work in. I have been going to Douglas J Institutes since I was 16. I do not live in the area but whenever I am back visiting my family I book an appointment in for whatever service I need. They have great service, great prices and you are helping someone complete their training. Win win!! Also I love Aveda products and cannot reccomend highly enough.

Highly recommend Paris J for an amazing facial. She incorporates hand and scalp massage and the experience is wonderful. I always love getting facials at the Institute, but have to say the setting is not as nice as it was in the past. The current skin and body area is not very spa like at all. It was very noisy with students giggling out in the hall, loudly talking about things and kind of ruined the relaxing feeling one hopes to get. I hope they can change this.

I had a 90 minute facial with Kathryn R and it was honestly top-notch. Kathryn was very welcoming and professional. She assessed the condition of my skin and recommended the sensitive skin facial, which her instructor confirmed was the right choice. It was probably the most relaxing thing I've done in a few years. The massage on face, scalp, neck and shoulders felt so good! When I left there my 48 year old skin looked and felt hydrated and smooth and the tone was totally even. I highly recommend treating yourself with Kathryn and you can NOT beat the value here. I'll definitely be back soon to try some other services and will get another facial soon. ❤️

Loved the interactions with her medically trained esthetician coach. Nice choices of aromatherapy and also could choose two other goodies like scalp, hand or foot massage while the final mask was on. A very affordable price and I’ve already booked to return and my skin was absolutely glowing when I left!

Great experience! My third time going and they always do a great job. Can't beat the price for the amount of service. They are super friendly and really make sure your result is satisfactory. Even get a scalp massage! I have very thick, long hair and always get a face frame with a soft "U" tappering in the back. My hair has always been a beast to wrestle with. I leave with healthy, even hair every time! Natalie Stocker did a superb job. I highly recommend her. 😊

Saturday was my first facial ever. I can't lie, I was super nervous having a student do a facial on me. Nyla Dobbins made my experience one that I will never forget. She was professional and very knowledgeable. She listened to me and offered her recommendations. Due to her graduating on 2/23, I booked an appointment with her one last time. I walked in without an appointment, and was lucky enough to be seen almost right away. The haircut took longer than usual, but the cut was excellent. The student hair dresser did such an excellent job, I slept through some of it. Came out looking & feeling great.

My daughter and I were visiting Grand Rapids and I decided to get us both 90 min facials. My daughter who is 16 had Georgia and LOVED her! Georgia went over any skin concerns my daughter was having and told her about different products that would help. She made her feel comfortable and about put her to sleep with how relaxed she was. I had Chantyl M. and she was phenomenal! Very thorough in explaining everything. It was the best facial I've ever had! I got the neck/ shoulder and arm massage as well as a foot massage. I melted like butter into the table. Never felt so relaxed. Both of our faces were so smooth and glowing when we left. I will definitely be making a trip back soon, you can't beat the value and the talent these ladies have!

Alicyn did a great job! I got a botanical repair and cut. It's been just over two years since I had my hair done... and it was in pretty rough shape. I was worried about losing a lot more length than I actually did. Also, I hate blow drying my hair. It's naturally wavy, thick and pretty coarse. Alicyn instead put in Dutch braids. Fabulous soft waves now!

Alexis (Durga?) Did a full set of highlights on me. I have a ton of hair, so it was a tedious process, especially since I wanted them to look natural. She was very patient and did them well. I was nervous because this is the first time I have gotten my hair highlighted. It turned out great! I have so much more confidence and I have been wearing my hair down, which I usually never do! Thank you for making me feel good about myself, Alexis! I will be back! I only wish that I could have given her a tip, but they are not allowed. I think they deserve to get tipped for their hard work!

Kelsey M was my technician she was very professional & very sweet. Asked all the right questions. I can tell she really loves what she does. As a massage therapist of 15 years & a frequent facial receiver I appreciate great customer service. She gave me extra time on all the areas of concern my neck & shoulders, heels, hands & arms. She also did an amazing face massage I loved her technique & will be stealing some of her moves. She used the right products for my rosacea. I felt clean & moisturized with no products left on my face. I left feeling stress free & rejuvenated.

Possibly the best $16 I’ve ever spent. I called in the morning and asked for a trim, first available. They got me in that evening. Yes - it is a school - they are not yet licensed individually. However, the instructors are circling and I could see them watching from a comfortable distance. After I arrived, the student stylist promptly greeted me and we discussed what I wanted. Then the instructor came over while I was still dry/“natural” (the way I looked when I came in) and the two of them discussed what I had asked for and what the plan was. Then the stylist washed me and trimmed me, gave me a blowout, and then the instructor came over again. They checked the cut together, including my layers, and then did my face framing. I could tell my stylist knew what she was doing, but she still checked in with me at every stage to make sure I was happy. This was a really great experience and you cannot beat the price. Hayley W, you are already an amazing stylist and will make so many future clients happy!

I received a facial by Chantyl M. It started with consultation about why I came in what experience I was looking for, what I use on my face currently, etc. During the facial she demonstrated she was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions. She was also very thorough there was no product left on my face after exfoliation and she applied, removed and reapplied everything on carefully. My face felt fresh and rejuvenated when she was finished. She could also tell from looking at my skin I was dehydrated, which I was. I can tell she is a perfectionist and serious about her craft, would definitely go back to her. As far as the school itself the location isnt so great but the spa area was clean and the music they played was soft and upbeat— kind wished they played something more soothing to match my mood but contrarily I might have fallen asleep if they had. Overall thumbs up for facials with CM. Will go back to her before my wedding.

Holly W did my 90 minute facial and OMG it was heaven and she was beyond amazing. They are so thorough and do soooo much as well as a foot bath. The foot bath wasn’t really necessary to me but I also got a neck and shoulder massage and hand and arm massage which was incredible. I will definitely be back to see Holly. I can’t say enough good things about Holly! The only problem is that the rooms have open ceilings so you can hear everything but the music was nice and it didn’t personally bother me but it may bother others. I also had a hair trim from Sophia R which was good but I did not get the scalp and shoulder massage as it states and I don’t feel like she washed the underside of my hair well but overall she did a great cut! I wish I was able to tip them but that’s not allowed!

I gifted myself with a 90 minute facial following the crazy holidays. I was nervous about the downtown location at 5pm on a work day but much to my surprise there was plenty of parking, and traffic was essentially nonexistent. Friendly staff greeted me upon my arrival. I was amazed at how big the place was. For how big it was, it was not loud at all. Allie Daugherty was my esthetician. Wow. She was amazing. The entire experience was amazing. As a busy mom of two and a teacher, finding time to have someone else take care of you doesn’t happen often. I felt like I was the only one in the massive building. I was able to relax and escape. It was evident that Allie loved her job and was comfortable with everything an hour and half facial entails. I appreciated my time there. I appreciated my time with Allie. After leaving, I quickly booked my next appointment with Allie before she graduates in March. I recommend Aveda to anyone that is on a budget but still needs pampering. I highly recommend Allie. That girl is talented! Oh, and my face was glowing after! Success for the “forever 28” mama.

Juliana did my SRT (it’s like a massage) and she did AMAZING! She was super professional, kind, and paid attention to all the things we spoke about during our consultation. It is a school so there are certain protocol they have to follow but it’s absolutely worth it for the price! Would recommend if you’re looking for a reasonably priced massage with great service.

OH MY GOSH! This place is amazing I got a hair cut for the first time in 6 years and it went wonderfully. I felt very comfortable with the hairdresser i was given, Soph did an amazing job, i cut off a good 5 inches and got face framing layers. Brandi Currier did an amazing job retouching my blonde hair! I’m so happy with it. She was super friendly and accommodating to anything I asked. Biggest plus for me was that she also did not keep me there for an extended period of time. In the past I have had this process take up to 4.5 hours at Aveda but with Brandi it only took 2.5 hours (and that’s only because a spot in my hair was taking a while to bleach). She was paying close attention to detail so that I would be happy with my outcome while also being conscious of my timeline! She also made sure I was comfortable at all times. I would definitely go see her again before she graduates!

All of the students are friendly and professional, and with the help of their instructors, they usually do a great job creating the look I want. The reason I decided to write this review though was because of my most recent visit and the student that cut my hair. I believe her name was Kylie. Not only did she do a great job cutting my hair, but she was also so sweet and kind. I know how easy it is to put on a “customer service face” and simply act polite and friendly toward customers; but I could tell that Kylie was being very genuine and caring throughout the whole process. It was so refreshing and she truly made my day so much better!

I was in the mood to treat myself and came across this service (90 minute facial) on groupon. Great price for the service and I initially thought, okay, it's a school, maybe won't be great. IT WAS AMAZING! I felt uber pampered and came out glowing and refreshed. Allie D. told me about the products she used and recommended some changes to my routine. Foot, arm, neck and face massage were spot on and it was exactly what I needed. I will be going back to see Allie before she graduates in March! Cannot recommend enough :)

My niece loved her hair coloring and that's what matters most. I removed a star because purple highlights took 5 hours (bleached and then colored highlights). Also, they almost charged me for a service she did not receive, I caught the error and it was fixed fortunately. Total cost was $105.

Chelsea did an amazing job on my haircut. She gets the 5 stars. I myself have been a hairdresser for 15 years and helped walk her through cutting my curly pixie haircut. I was not impressed by her teacher who lacked giving her instruction, asking her questions (Like have you cut a pixie yet? have you worked with curly hair?) nor did she ever come back to even see how the progress of the haircut was going. When she did come check the haircut at the end the teacher still did not explain anything to Chelsea on why she was trimming little bits off. This is not the kind of education I thought Aveda schools provided. I was also shocked not one stylist has an anti fatigue mat and they all have to stand on CEMENT FLOORS. This is insane to me and I could not imagine doing my job properly having to stand 8 plus hours on cement. This spells out feet, hip and back problems. Do better for your students, they are paying an awful lot to receive sub par education.

I come here to get my hair highlighted every couple months and they almost always do a great job, but I went this past weekend and it was my favorite visit yet! My stylist Nina did an amazing job on my hair, and she made the whole experience fun! Something to keep in mind when going to this salon though is that it's right by a homeless shelter, and I have been followed and shouted at on a few occasions by men on the street. I still go here because of the amazing service but as a 22 year old female, it's scary walking to and from my car and I keep my hand on my pepper spray at all times in the area. Allie D was amazing! Very professional and very thorough. I felt very comfortable right away. I'm a very experienced Brazilian wax client, and I know the steps and procedures required, and Allie D was a very capable technician, and her teacher Abby was wonderful!! I do preferr sugaring over waxing for the speed of service, and the results are the same as waxing. I hope that Douglas J could teach sugaring in the future, because clients don't want to spend that much time waiting for hard wax to harden up. Usually, it takes about 15-20 minutes to do a Brazilian with sugar...I'm sure waxers are fast too, but I'm just sayin!😁I know that Aveda is environmentally conscious, as well, so I'm confused as to why they want to teach waxing when you have to dispose of so many sticks!?Sugaring is less waistful and environmentally friendly. At the end of the day, I did enjoy my experience and will recommend Douglas J school!

So I do want to say the girl who did my hair was very personable, professional, and super nice. I would definitely come back. But, what I wanted vs. what I received, is not close. It did turn out somewhat cute, but there’s chunks of my hair that don’t have color in it, where color should be. And there’s like full sections in the front where it was even touch at all. I have to hide darker parts that they didn’t dye because it makes me embarrassed, like literal chunks of dark hair in the front and the rest blonde. 😟But my stylist personality wise was very nice.

I decided to make a big change for myself and go all around blonde - that is quite a long process which I was prepared for. Everything up until the end was good. I had an appointment at noon and was there until almost 5pm which I am guessing is when they close. Toward the end of my appointment everyone was starting to clean up and leave so my stylist started to hurry to leave. I ended up leaving feeling very rushed and with a ton of visible product on my scalp and forehead and had to go home and shower right after my appt. My stylist was accompanied by an educator, so I thought everything would be perfect, as they both blow dried my hair and quickly cut it when I had said before hand I wanted a trim and layers. I felt it was unprofessional to make the client feel like a burden for getting everything I had asked for when I am still paying $120 for what should be a professional salon experience.

I have been to this lovely salon twice now and will be going there for all future hair needs! My first cut I had Zoe as my stylist and she was upbeat, friendly, and gave me the exact cut I asked for. The second time I visited, I had Shelby as my stylist who was very welcoming and focused on giving me what hairstyle I wanted. Since my hair is very thick the cut was taking a little longer than normal and my meter was about to run out. The 'educator', Cody, asked how I was on time and was incredibly nice and offered to put money on my meter. Overall wonderful experience!!!

Peyton Zimmerman cut my hair a few days ago, and overall, I was pleased with the experience. More services were offered to me at Douglas J. Aveda than were offered to me from the last person I got my hair cut from, and at a much lower price. It took nearly three hours between when I left home and when I returned home (20 min drive), which is a little annoying, but the price made it well worth it. Part of this may be because of the tour she gave me at the beginning of my appointment, which I felt was unnecessary. Just don't expect it to be a quick haircut. It definitely took more than the hour they told me it would take. I am generally not comfortable getting my hair cut, and expressed this to Peyton. During the haircut, she allowed someone else to come cut my hair, which made me very uncomfortable. There were also some times when it seemed like she was trying to insult me/imply I do something wrong when caring for my hair, as some other reviewers have noted, which wasn't favorable. She also tried to push me to buy products at the end, and even brought a bottle to the counter while I was checking out after I had said no, I wasn't going to buy one. She also asked what I thought my hair lacked, to which I said volume. After all of the styling techniques and products she put in, telling me they'd give me volume, I left with hair flat as ever. Those things being said, the experience was overall pretty good. I just wanted to list negatives so new visitors will know what to expect. My hair looked the same after being cut by her as it had after being cut by a hairdresser with years of experience, and I would go back to her again, simply because after all of this, she still did a good job, and what I wanted, on my hair.

The girls I've had have always been super nice and friendly. Only once in like 5 years have I ever required a redo haircut which they do for free. Got my hair colored and cut by Katherine. She was absolutely amazing! We planned to do a dark brown to ash brown bayalage, but my hair was too damaged to deal with the lighter colors so she did an all over dark brown for now. It turned out great, especially considering she was working with extremely stubborn red box dye on the ends and brown grown out roots. And she's the only person in years to cut my hair how I wanted it (I asked for non blunted ends and she did it perfectly!). I know I was more vague about what I wanted than I should have been and she really just instinctively knew what I meant and made it happen. She and her instructor even threw in a free repair treatment for me because they weren't able to do the planned color, which was generous since it wasn't their fault I don't take good enough care of my hair. I definitely will go back to her to finish up once my hair mends a bit more. One issue, however: I ended up paying $128 for a haircut and a basic all over color, which seems a little expensive for a school. My receipt lists highlights that I actually never ended up having done so definitely make sure you know what you're getting charged for. Overall a really great experience! I can count on one hand the number of haircuts I've ever actually liked and this one ranks near the top.

I sat down with Leah yesterday. She was great. Very nice and gentle, which I appreciate. My hair was been bleach a ton so it's badly damaged and everyone knows when it's wet it's the most venerable to breakage. When Leah did my blow drying, it didn't hurt once. She never tugged. I stopped seeing my normal person at another salon because she would tug hard and it made me nervous, she's a level 5 so I assumed she knew how to handle bleached hair but maybe not. Anyway I just wanted a trim and that's what I got. No complaints at all. I think my hair may be a little hard to handle and she did great! You can stop reading here. Well, the only very minor complaint I have is reception (but maybe I misunderstood) he said if I sign up for their rewards I get $5 off and texts each week, I said heck yeah but nothing came of it. Then he said I get a free sample if I schedule next apt now so I did but no sample. Totally not a big deal, it was just weird.

This was my first visit to the Aveda Institute, though I have had my cut and colored at other beauty schools before. I went in for a pixie cut (from shoulder length hair), and I absolutely love my results. I worked with Magdelen, who was EXCELLENT. From start to finish, she made sure that my cut and color were exactly what I wanted. The instructor stopped by frequently to make suggestions and to ensure that we were going in the right direction. It's a small thing, but I was offered a drink of water about halfway through the color process and asked if I wanted a break to use the bathroom or stretch my legs. I took her up on both and was so grateful to have been asked! I will definitely be returning for my next hair services.

Being downtown, it's a cool setting but parking can be tricky. I found a free spot and took the free Dash bus, so I wouldn't have to pay for parking. It was a good thing too, as my appointment took almost five hours- granted I had a lot done and I have a lot of hair. I got highlights, a botanical and a haircut. Thanks to seeing other reviews, I found a Groupon for the botanical and haircut. Although it took a long time, I had a relaxing experience. Imani was my stylist and she was fantastic. She had great customer service skills and made me feel comfortable as soon as we met. She did a meticulous job on my highlights- I loved the result. My highlights were finer than usual so they blend very nicely. Despite the longer time, I would definitely recommend Aveda if you want to save a few bucks (tho unfortunately you're not allowed to tip the students) and have quality experience.

I had a facial a couple of days ago. I love every time I am in there! It all smells wonderful, the reception desk is also super friendly, and all of the student and instructors have been so incredible. I had the best facial ever with Reesi, but as I was trying to relax, there was a lot of noise outside of my room. It was banging and water noises that took away from my experience. Reesi was so great and went and asked the people making noises to quiet down. This was so impressive to me that she was such an advocate! Cannot wait to go back, just hoping for a more peaceful experience.

She did such an amazing job the first time, I am a natural blonde but with more yellow tones and I was looking to go platinum with silver tones. She called her advisor over and they were very thorough and went through multiple options with me and asked what I wanted to do. She took her time and was very careful and paid attention to detail. The result I absolutely loved, the color and cut were amazing. I just went back a second time to get it toned and trimmed and as always Giorgia did a phenomenal job. I would recommend to her anyone. Overall the experience was great. I just went there yesterday to get a hair cut and the botanical treatment. I found a groupon for only $17, which is a great deal. The student that I had was Alida, and she was super cool! She explained everything to me about the botanical treatment. And she cut my hair exactly how I wanted it. She listened to what I said and gave me a great hair cut. Usually I’ll go to a salon and they will butcher my hair. So it took a lot of trust for me to get a haircut by students, but I have zero complaints and would definitely go back!

Luna! is exceptional. My hair color was in great need of recalibration! Very brassy with dark roots and my goal is platinum. Needless to say, not an easy task! and haircut. Luna pulled off a beautiful cut - blunt with some curtains ;-) and the color is remarkable. I will be back and most certainly will follow Luna to her salon destination after graduation. My hair looks great but it took 5 hours for a cut and 2 partial highlights. I had no warning of this so I was starving and my sugar was really low. You should probably warn people when they make the appointment that it could take that long. Had I known, I would have brought some food. I know it's a learning process for the stylists, but 5 hours is extreme-and my stylist was graduating the next day. And with the time it took I had to pay $12.00 for parking, on top of the $81 for my hair. This made me a little upset. Also, I got no head massage and the hair wash was terrible-it was like she didn't want to touch my hair! Which was sad because I love the small massage you get during a hair wash. Other than that, I recommend this place. Great hospitality and great job on my hair!

I have been coming here for a few years now. I get my hair colored, my haircut and the students all do a great job. One student in particular however, Ninoska (Nina) , blew me away. She told me that she has only been a student for 4 months..but my hair color and my blowout exceeded what I got from a 5 star salon before. She is amazing , make sure you ask for Nina on your next appointment! Even the next day my hair is still silky smooth and straight from my blowout ! I love Aveda and encourage anyone to try it out !

The plan and the finished product were both approved by an educator, who also made sure to ask if I was satisfied with Hannah and if there was anything they could do to improve the client experience. I made an appointment here not knowing what to expect. I absolutely loved my experience. I was a little unsure at first, because they are students after all, but I was pleasantly surprised with Jessica Alba Martinez. She was a little quiet and shy at first, but she definitely is a hidden gem in Aveda. I walked in to get a cut and ended up with a color and will be returning in the future for another color. Alba and another student create a pleasant and professional atmosphere. Unfortunately, I did not remember the other girls name, but she was extremely talented as well. This place is definitely creating a great group of students. Also, upon getting to know Jessica I realized she has an amazing talent as a makeup ARTIST, because that's what she does, she creates art. She showed me a photograph of her work and she looked better than all the models on the wall of that place. I loved it! I am excited to return for another color. I added a before an after photo. I started out with completely dark hair to the middle of my back and it ended with shoulder length with caramel highlights.

I went in for just a trim. It can sometimes be hit or miss here, though it is usually a very acceptable haircut. However, I was really blown away by my haircut this time, and that was because Piper was cutting my hair and she was so great! Usually, I dread going to the salon because sometimes it is just an hour filled with silence, but Piper kept the conversation going while also being extremely focused and diligent on my hair. I would absolutely have her cut my hair again!

First time I ever went and I loved every minute of it . The students are great and Maddie did an extraordinary job on my hair. She took every step of the process very seriously as if she was doing her own hair. I went in for high lights and definitely got what I wanted . The best part of it was watching the other girls do there thing on there own clients, it definitely was not stop action . Then when one of them were finished with there own client they then came and gave a helping hand . So I had not one but 2 stylist in my hair.

Tawney made sure I was comfortable throughout and asked questions to make sure she suggested the correct facial and products. My hair turned out great! The students do really well and it is nice that they have the instructors check every step of the way to make sure it turns out just the way you wanted, definitely makes you feel more comfortable. The only downfall is the amount of time it takes! Expect to be there about double the time you would normally to get your hair done.

I made an appointment at Douglas J, and kept re-scheduling. I made excuses to not get my haircut at a school, there were so many "what-ifs." I finally decided to take the risk, and keep an appointment I made. It was so worth it! I did come with the exception my cut will take a while, as this is a school, and well, students are learning. It took about 90 minutes to cut my hair. There are three instructor checks. Once before the student begins any work, another before drying/styling, and one final check before I walk out the door. The instructors were really great at pointing out faults in a students work (nicely, of course!) I was so expressed. I walked out the door with a $50+ haircut for $16. I was a little bit bummed I didn't get the sensory journey, or scalp massage as advertised. I've been to high end Aveda salons, and the massages are to die for, I was excited to receive one. If Douglas J doesn't offer the sensory journey/massage, why state it in the description on the website? Parking was a bit of a hassle with construction. Plus I went during rush hour. Ended up paying $5 to park in the ramp next door. So the total price of my cut+parking was $21. Still a bargain for a top notch haircut. I seriously recommend Douglas J. Keep in mind it will take longer than usual to receive services. But you will not be disappointed. If you are, I'm sure the instructors and/or customer service will be happy to make you satisfied.

I normally get my hair cut at Cheeky Strut by one of my friends, but she has in Italy the last few weeks and I woke up NEEDING my hair cut. I went to the Aveda institute after work and got right in. It took about an hour and 15 mins total for the consultation, wash, cut, and blow out. My stylist was Jade C., she did an amazing job. It's one of the best hair cuts I've had in a while. She didn't do the scalp massage, which I'm fine with - honestly I don't go to the salon for a spa experience I want to get in and out as fast as possible, I likely would have just told her to skip that part if she started to do it because I've been at the salon before where it took 2 hours for a simple trim. Jade did a great job , I would totally recommend her to my friends.

It is students who do the work, but they have phenomenal instructors who teach them how to to hair wizards. If you want to let students get hours in the chair for boards as well as a haircut and color that is impossible to beat in price, I suggest making an appointment here.

A wonderfully inexpensive way to pamper yourself! Will the services take a bit longer than at a traditional salon? Yes, but 100% worth it due to the HUGE savings!!$$ All services are performed by senior students and overseen by a teacher. The prices are out of this world and no tipping is allowed! Parking can be tricky depending on the day. It's exceptionally clean and welcoming. Also, be sure to sign up for their rewards/discounts program and you'll get texts for offers like 35% off a haircut, etc. The deals offered make it nearly impossible to pass up. That's why I keep coming back time after time and I've never been disappointed.

The stylist I had was very nice and sweet, but I could tell she did not have much hands on experience as she came across a little tentative and awkward, which did not put me to ease. I came in for a blowout, so it's not like I was worried about her ruining my hair forever, but I still would have liked what I asked for. I told my stylist that I liked a lot of volume in my hair and a soft, bouncy curl. I ended up with the flattest, straightest hair I've ever had in my life. My hair wasn't even fully dry at the roots and I had to tell her 2 or 3 times that it still wasn't dry. After that I just gave up and figured that it wasn't the end of the world. As I said, my stylist was very sweet and I enjoyed talking with her, but she definitely needed some more practice with real life applications, which is what she is getting by working in this setting. I would definitely come back to this salon for things like a blowout, but I don't know if I would ever be trusting enough to let them actually cut my hair.

I've gone here twice now to get my hair cut and colored and have loved it each time! The students are so fun and take it very seriously. Before they even start on your hair, the instructor comes around to make sure what the student is planning will look good. After the cut, the instructor comes back around to check and fix anything so you're always walking out the door with a professional style.

Bad experience turned great! I had my hair lightened balayage-style in two sessions and both times my root area was splotchy and brassy. Customer service handled my situation with understanding and flexibility and got me right in for a complimentary re-do color with Adam Miller. Adam did such an amazing job! I have always enjoyed my visits to Aveda. You need to budget more time for your appointment than a typical salon, but I actually love the opportunity to slow down and be pampered for a while. It's really fun to watch the instructors teach the students new techniques and to see the newest styles and techniques being used. Not to mention their products! My hair was done by Marisol H last night - she was wonderful! Very gentle on my hair too, some stylists in general will yank at knots (pretty sure that damages hair especially when wet). She worked quickly yet with precision, and listened to all of my concerns. My hair was uneven from a previous cut and I wanted things evened out and all one length so I can begin growing it all out. She also had her teacher check things every step of the way, and it was clear she was watching and learning from any changes her teacher made too. When she finished at first, I said I wanted it a tad bit shorter and she happily went back in again and shortened it up a little more for me. Wonderful experience!! The manicure looked beautiful when she was done. (I messed it up shortly thereafter, but that's not her fault!) Would have given 5 stars, but this facility does not have a designated space for manicures and they set us up at a table in the lobby for this service. Not exactly relaxing! I would prefer a quieter space where people are not constantly walking past.

If you go to the institute, you must be willing to stay for a while, and also be accepting of the final product, because it will likely be slightly different than what you envisioned. I was hoping for a subtle balayage, and it turned out to look like more of an ombre style, but I still was really pleased with the results. If you are hoping for perfection, go somewhere else. But if you want a nice, inexpensive haircut experience, look no further.

All and all great experience! Every time I have gone in I've gotten the results I've expected. One critique I have is the amount of time I spent here. I understand it's a learning institute and they are students. I have always respected their time and make sure my day is clear of other events so I don't have to rush anywhere. But, my experience just the other day was unsatisfactory. I spent a total of 5 and a half hours there for a partial highlight. No cut or style included. My hair is short and medium thickness. It took close to an hour and a half to wash and blow dry my hair. All and all, great experience. Just wish they would be more considerate of your time.

This is my 4th time getting my hair cut at this location and though the first few times I’ve been really happy with my experience, the most recent time just didn’t hit the mark unfortunately. Though I just wanted a trim and some layering, I was never really given a consultation. After I said I would like a trim no other questions were asked - my stylist went to go hang up my coat and when the instructor came by and asked what we were doing my stylist responded with “we already talked about it, we’re taking an inch off.” And that’s when I kind of jumped in and explained further what I wanted. I felt like I wasn’t really listened to and I’ve never felt more nervous getting my hair cut. Even during the check right after the cut, I felt like the instructor wasn’t paying attention because she was instructing the student next to me. She also didn’t come back to check at the end either and normally they do. I understand these are students and you’re taking that risk when going here but I’m usually completely at ease because the instructors are present and attentive. I didn’t feel that this time and I’m not super happy with the result - layers are pretty choppy and uneven.

The hair cut service is fantastic. It's done by students who have experience cutting hair, and supervised and gone over carefully by an instructor in a relaxing (if somewhat noisy) environment. Because the cost is reasonable, you can go in every month for a haircut to maintain your cut. Highly recommend!

My only issue was my appointment was finishing near the end of their class day, and a large group of students began to congregate around the area I was seated. The instructor actually had to ask them to step/move back. It made me feel very anxious. Other than that, I really enjoyed it!

I can I with a salon color that I had tried to fix myself and want to go back to my natural blonde, ok maybe a bit lighter, before putting bleach on my hair they did a test strand which showed my hair wasn't strong enough. Pros & cons. Pros- they’re cheap, you don’t have to tip, they use great products, they’re friendly. Cons- they can’t do any other hair that’s not white and straight, very limited. I don’t trust hair coloring here. Only come here for cuts. They also went down over the years, I used to come here in middle school and every chair was packed on the weekends now it’s nothing, even more limited with covid. But the place has gone down hill. The stylists would dress up and have their hair styled. Now they walk around in messy buns. They don’t represent their work. Stains all over clothes. Just very messy.

I had a wonderful experience with the student who delivered the service. Scheduled a follow up service the next week. I arrived after traveling over snowy roads, paying for parking and wasting my time to be informed the plant peel is not a stand alone service. The manager was in my opinion ridged and said I had to have a facial to get the plant peel. This is despite the instructor telling me I would get the best benefit by having the plant peel, only, for three consecutive weeks. Of course they claim it did not happen. I declined to stay as I do not want to have 3 consecutive weeks of facials and plant peels. Very frustrating. Subsequent to the response from Douglas J, I contacted Danielle. As a result, a stress treatment will be provided at the next visit. This is sincerely appreciated. As a result, I have revised my rating to 4 stars.

A friend recommended this place to me and I thought I'd check it out. I was very pleased. The students were very professional. Since it was my first time, I was given a tour. It's a very neat old building that has been converted and was very clean and nice. My hair cut and blow dry was only $16 and you can't tip. I hate parking downtown so I was a bit concerned about that but there is a parking garage right across the street so that was convenient and it only cost me $5. NOTE: It will take longer than an average haircut so plan accordingly. I have medium length hair and I was there for an hour and 40 min.
