Isabella C really listened to my concerns and together with the educator for the hair color, which was gray. Isabella took the time during the bleaching out the top new-grown hair (it was natural black) and toning process to make sure the gray color was achieved. Afterwards, she stayed late to achieve the perfect blow dry and curled my hair. I told her that I had an important event. She was friendly, patient, and enjoys. All of that, she made the first experience for me that much more enjoyable and great decision on using service at beauty school. Believe that their students will be succeed and great cosmology out there :)

I went in for just a shampoo and have my hair trimmed, turned out I had a Great time! Morgan did a fantastic job of listening and using great products on my hair. She also took the time to make sure I knew how to use those products. While Morgan was styling my hair she shared with me some ideas that I might want to try in the future, I was really excited about that info since I was clueless, which is why I just have let my hair grow out(boring). 😁 I will definitely be going back 🤗

I would totally recommend Aveda! The students really care about the clients, and the environment is SO relaxed and full of energy. I also want to give a shout out to their instructor Whitney V, she goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is happy. I loved how kind she was to the clients, and her students as well. I really liked how she worked with them and taught them with such positivity. I received the cut I desired and really appreciated the professionalism and same day appts. Courtney made today beyond an amazing haircut. This time it wasn’t just a haircut it was all about the experience. Don’t get me wrong my hair is feeling way healthier and is beautifully cut and so cute and my style but the chit chat I got to have was the best. She really listened to me and what I wanted, got to know my hair alongside how much time I had for it, recommended me products for my troubles with my hair, and got to know me and my life. Being a new mom, I don’t get out especially with the pandemic and she made the “me time/self care time” I got beyond worth leaving my baby. Thank you for my hair and the down time today. The service was amazing! Cassie did a wonderful job on my hair, the only complaint I have is the water! Getting my hair washed with COLD water is not exactly ideal....😳 and then having a very limited amount of CLEAN towels.. obviously those things were not the stylists fault and I could clearly tell she was embarrassed about it. Again great service and I feel like a brand new woman!

I’ve been to the Aveda institute several times for cuts and colors and deep conditioning treatments. Always love how my hair turns out. Today my hair didn’t quite turn out as expected (shorter than I wanted/usually get) BUT it was still a good haircut. The educator, Matthew R, was very kind and went over a few different options and finished out my hair cut while teaching my student. I forget my student’s name but she was very kind and as well and kept apologizing even though I told her it was fine, length comes back. Hopefully she sees this and doesn’t still feel bad! I like my haircut much more now that I’m home and styled it like I typically do. Very much appreciate how they went above and beyond making sure I had a good experience. I also had a hair masque and it felt really great! My hair is very soft now. Will return for future services.

I also love the Aveda products as they are cruelty free and much more natural than many salon products. I started to realize that my other salon was not using hair dye that was cruelty free, and that was it for me.

My experience at Aveda every four weeks is when I look forward to every month. Especially now that my stylist is Haliegh. She takes time with my hair care and makes me feel like I am very important. She has great hair washing skills that will take her far in life LOL. She remembers personal things about me And goes out of her way to make me feel special. I would recommend her to everybody, but then I wouldn’t be able to get an appointment!

My hair turned out beautifully and I really enjoyed the time I spent there. I have already set up my next appointment with Delaney! My student stylist was Taylar Porter. She did an excellent job across the table. She explained color and cuts very well. She was friendly and knowledgeable. She listened to me about my hair instead of assuming the texture, thickness, etc., which is what I’ve experienced from stylists at salons in the past. For example: my hair is thick and curly. I straighten it sometimes. When I’d go into a salon with it straightened, they’d say my hair was fine and give me a hair cut that didn’t look flattering if I wanted to wear my hair natural. I tried to explain that I have curly hair and just straightened it, but they thought they knew my hair better that I do. I did not have to worry about that with this student. She was great. Additionally, the price is unbeatable and the environment is friendly. Aveda truly develops people into great cosmetologists. I will definitely recommend!

The student was more concerned about my wishes and concerns than normal hair professionals. As a matter of fact, my hair looked better yesterday after the appointment than it does when I pay twice as much at other places. I'm definitely coming back!

Breanna took the time during the coloring and toning process to make sure the warm honey blond color was achieved and afterwards stayed late to achieve the perfect blow out style to add extra volume to my thinning hair. I had a Hydro facial today with Emily. She was amazing! She was completely professional and explained what she was doing and why she was doing it. Hydrofacials aren’t meant to be relaxing, although I felt like I had just gone through a car wash and came out clean on the other side. I think women would probably understand that! LOL. I would totally go back to Emily for another Hydro facial or any other treatment that she’s available for. She was awesome!

I've been very pleased with the work I've had done at Aveda Institute. One unexpected perk, I've found, about getting your hair done at an instructional setting is that the students are very motivated to do a great job, and they're very meticulous. It's also reassuring that there is an instructor evaluating their work every step of the way. You can expect to spend more time at AI at an appointment than you would at a regular salon, because 1) the students - especially the new ones - can be a little slow, and 2) they will have to periodically fetch an instructor to inspect what they're doing to your hair. However, I'm willing to spend the extra time - it doesn't bother me and it's not that big of a deal. To be honest, I've had better cuts and colors at AI than just about anywhere else in the area, and you can't beat the price. I also really appreciate that I can usually call in and get on their books quickly (it's impossible for me to schedule 6-8 weeks in advance for appointments, I don't have that luxury). If I'm lucky enough to have a break from work responsibilities where I suddenly have a few hours where I can get my hair done, oftentimes I've been able to call AI and they can get me in within a short amount of time. Great thing for a mom of three who also works.

I went to the Aveda Institute for the first time last week. I was impressed how professional everyone was. I forgot I was in a training salon. I had JiJi and she did such a great job, she had the desire to get it right, asked questions, took her time - I remember she apologized once for feeling as though she took to long. You didn't! I was glad to see her instructor who checked her hair was pleased, gave her praise, instructed on one little thing and let her finish up. I had my hair washed, cut (2 inches off/long layers), dried and styled with waves all in about an hour and for $20. I will be back, so everyone keep up the good work!

Gabrielle Kent earned those 5-stars with my haircut on Wednesday. She is graduating Friday and I predict she will be VERY SUCCESSFUL at Serenity in Valley West Mall. Gabby knows how to cut hair. She REMEMBERS my last visit in January and what we discussed (likes, cutting techniques offered by instructors, etc). That's impressive. Her favorite cut is short haircuts, but I am sure she will excel with whatever she is given. She's a great conversationalist. She's kind hearted and wants you happy with your cut. She takes a very logical, common sense approach to cutting your mane: start long and trim back. You can't extend hair that's already gone. Your input is valuable to her. Gabby is one of those rockstar stylists that has absorbed what Aveda Institute has given her. She is an amazing person and a trusted stylist.

I've had my hair cut here multiple times and recently gotten highlights. The students are so professional and I always leave looking great. One critique would be to clarify service pricing online, as they charge $10 for every extra bowl of bleach. Even so, still half the price of going to another salon!

I have only gotten hair cuts and colors and they have always turned out just as good as a professional stylist. However, I do feel that they are a bit pricey on certain things. I paid around 120 for highlights and lowlights once. Other times I feel like I'm getting a steal! Staff has always been professional and I as long as you are honest, you will walk out happy. I have seen instructors fixing hair more than once!

I’ve had color done here three or four times, and frankly they do an excellent job. The educators keep careful watch of everything that is done, so I’ve never had a bad experience with color. The one thing that I would complain about, is that you literally cannot get a blowout or hairstyle to walk out of the salon looking decent. Every time I just asked for a simple blowout, and I end up with hair that’s half wet half dry, and a frizzy mess. I was have to offer to go home and style it myself and they never seem to think anything is amiss. Maybe they just don’t teach that?

She foiled and then did the root touch-up, this is the first time anyone has ever done it in that order and it turned out perfect!! I have been an Aveda customer since they opened their doors way back when. I've noticed the new students have learned how to color one steps much better. Its so great that they understand to only add new color to the new growth and not go over the line of demarcation. This last time Jamie gave me the BEST massage ever. What a treat! - and so smart that she gave it to me while the color was processing instead of first thing. I really like the changes at the school. I feel they are for the better. I am hoping they don't raise prices any more as I won't be able to attend. I feel it is a decent value for what I get.

Natalie was an angel. However, while Natalie was giving me amazing service she had asked me to take my mask off one ear so she didn't get dye and bleach on it and KayLee came up out of nowhere and rudely asked me to put my mask on. If she would've maybe inquired as to why I had it off in the first place and wasn't being sassy about it I wouldn't have been so put off by it. But Natalie was professional and you can tell she really takes pride in her work.

I've been going to the salon to get my hair colored for about two years now, and I like it for the most part. The students know what they are doing and the educators are there to help them if they don't. My hair is always the color I want. Unfortunately, The front desk is a little disorganized. I have scheduled appointment appointment and then told when I showed up that there was no appointment on the schedule. I've also had my appointment cancelled the day of. So, if you don't mind navigating the disorganization, Then I definitely recommend.

Rachel is very kind and shows great care to her clients. The school always works with my schedule. Whenever I call, my call is always answered in a professional manner. Yes, I could go to a professional salon to get my hair and eyebrows done. I choose to go to Aveda, because they know me and they understand my needs. I have been a loyal customer of the Aveda Institute in Des Moines since it opened in 2008. They did my hair for my wedding, all my girls' proms and homecomings... and countless "girls days" for me and my girls. The first 5-ish years were GREAT. I was so impressed. Every time I walked out of that place, I was 100% satisfied. Things started to decline around 2016. There seemed to be a lot of turnover of educators, and then ones who remained didn't seem too invested. I'm so happy to say my last visit (Oct 2018) was probably the happiest I have EVER been!!! There was GREAT communication between the stylist and educator...and most importantly, before I left, the educator confirmed that what I asked for is what I left with. If you are looking for high quality services without breaking the bank, I highly recommend the Aveda Institute!

I went there after another salon messed up my hair. I was so unhappy with it but I got an amazing student who immediately looked at it and had ideas how to fix it. She was patient as fixing it definitely was time consuming. At one point in time she had another student help with the foiling since they had to do my entire head. I was so happy with the results. Aston Wilsey-Monroe (student) along with Aveda did an amazing cut and color on my natural curly hair. Possibly the best cut I've ever had. The color looks so natural (no more grays) and pretty highlights. I will definitely come again! Scalp and hand massage was a really nice touch. The building is a bright and happy place, the receptionists are courteous and friendly and they've handled Covid-19 well. Masks are required and disposable ones provided.

I've missed the wonderful products & careful calming atmosphere of Aveda, so I returned to (again) have my "roots" colored . Your products don't have the ammonia smell, B.U.T they just don't cover RESISTANT GREY hair. Coloring products off the shelf do cover. Making the color darker & leaving product on longer does help some. However having hair shades darker that you wish isn't good. The product also fades MUCH quicker, even using Aveda shampoos & other products. I just HATE grey hair!

So I love the idea of getting my hair done by students because it’s so much cheaper and it gives them experience. However, my experience was not very great. I asked for balayage on my dark brown hair. I knew it wasn’t going to come out frost white because that’s common sense. I did however ask for the balayage to be brought up to my cheekbone/eyes. She even informed the instructor before she started that she was going to bring it up to my cheekbones. I agreed and she started. Not only did she leave me sitting in the hair sink for 5 minutes at a time because she forgot to grab toner, or conditioner, or my conditioning treatment, but my blonde was NOT brought up to anywhere near my cheekbones. I have a photo, and it’s liteeally brought up to my SHOULDERS. thats IT. so I called back a couple days saying that I’m unhappy and I cannot seem to accept my hair. I keep complaining and wishing it was fixed so I called aveda to see if they could fix the length issue, and maybe even brighten it up more because my hair is ORANGE. And after review they decided that they cannot fix it for free, and if I want to come in they will bring the height up of my balayage for 50% off. I have to pay TWICE to get what I asked for the FIRST TIME. Which is beyond ricudlous to me. I’m not going to drive out there and spend another 3 hours there to give them more cash to receive what I asked for in the first place. I understand students are learning and I did not call upset or anything, I simply stated I did not receive what I asked for and they won’t even fix it for free. Now I have to do out of the box dye to fix it myself because I cannot afford to go to a real professional because I just spent 90$ at aveda getting a hair job that didn’t even meet what I asked for. I have currently been to her 3 times (pictures below) and have my 4th appointment scheduled with her at the end of this month. Bailey has never failed to impress me. She always listens to what I want and gives me her opinions and just confirms it's what I want. She has such a fun personality and makes it enjoyable to sit in her chair. Bailey cares about her customers more than anything. Her #1 goal is to make you happy and she won't let you leave if you feel otherwise. She is also very acceptive of constructive criticism and takes what you say to improve her skills for the future. Bailey and the rest of the Aveda team make you feel like you're at home. I have read all of the reviews on here even the bad ones. Most of those bad ones are about how the student didnt show up or called in. Also how they feel their pedicures or whatever didn't come out the way they wanted. Well I hate to break it to you but Aveda is a SCHOOL and the people working on you are STUDENTS they are LEARNING and also at most salons 75 bucks for a cut and highlight would be much more. It doesn't matter how old you are or anything. Plus keep in mind the students dont even get paid they get your tips but they dont get actually paid. It is for their education so they can learn. Everytime I have gone I have been given the best service and I have gotten my hair highlighted and my hair trimmed and its come out great! I always go to Aveda cause it is affordable and I feel lke the students do a good job and if your unsatisfied by the way it looks you can come back whenever and get it redone just LET THEM KNOW and not just wait a day then call and be like yeah I don't like it. I've gone about 4-5 times for a trim, highlights, prom hairstyle, and so on. They do a great job! Plus they have an instructor who is supervising so seriously nothing to worry about.

As a Salon owner I was researching some prospective employees and I came across the schools reviews. While there were some glowing ones, there also was several less than flattering ones and I thought I’d weigh in on my opinion as a person that experiences the Aveda Institute from a different perspective. All cosmetology students need finishing and refinement to their skill set, this is true of any school, in fact cosmotology as implied in the name is the continual study of our craft and a great stylist will always continue to learn throughout their career. That being said going to a beauty school is always going to be a slightly unpredictable experience as the school it self doesn’t have the same abilities to manage students as an employer. So if your student doesn’t show up, they really can’t control it because the student is paying them and to some degree is in control of when they call in or not, that being said the Aveda Institute has the strictest attendance policies of any school in the Des Moines area; they do a great job of setting realistic salon attendance expectations and the students we’ve hired generally have been prompt and have a great understanding acceptable absenses in real Salon life, so leaving negative reviews about your stylist or service provider on the Institutes page isn’t really fair as they can’t control a student standing you up like an employer could; and remember most of the students are entering into their very first “real” profession and that they often haven’t yet learned professionalism (which the Aveda Institute will teach them) or sometimes your student will have pressing and extenuating circumstances like the lack of childcare or a need to be at a job that supports them and their family while they are in school that isn’t accommodating their school schedule. This is a part of the learning process and a risk you need to except when booking at a school, but getting overly frustrated isn’t going to help the situation, if they don’t have a student to provide the service then they are out of options and trust me the school will be talking to the student that didn’t show up for your appointment as this is also extremely frustrating to them as well, but as a potential guest or employer that review is unhelpful because we would literally have no way of knowing if our “student provider” consistent with attedance or not, I’d say call them out by name if you insist on leaving a review but really do you really want to tarnish a students new career because they haven’t fully learned what professional expectations are or didn’t have the ability to be there as they are literally paying to provide you with the service? I hope not, it seems overly harsh to me. This place is an educational environment, so if you go in wanting an “Instagram” picture and get frustrated they slightly missed the mark, and don’t want another student touching your hair to try again, well you have understand that not even all licensed stylists can do some of these pictures because the look was created by the best of the best in our industry and many took specifc education and multiple appointments to achieve and the student is just that a student and is learning their craft. The instructors are there to help guide them, but beauty school is about learning and experimenting, and even above failing (and learning from that failure) just like any other industries schooling, and an instructor that steps in and does the work for the student is only holding the student back from establishing problem solving skills and the ability to fix mistakes (theirs or other stylists mistakes). In our experience with Aveda students, we find their grads are some of the best perspective employees that the area has to offer and while I can say I’ve hired great employees from almost every school here in DSM, the Aveda Institute grads have a solid foundational skill set that sets the standard for everyone else to live up to. Keep up the great work Aveda Institute Des Moines you are a great asset to professional Salons everywhere

Aveda is defiantly a company with amazing morals and standards. My instructors are all extremely profound.
