This review’s about Eric. Amazing Fades. Been clipping my hair with him three times now and they always turn out great. The team is invested in seeing this awesome guy succeed as a barber, and will cycle in to give tips or demonstrate every now and then. The cuts take a little longer, but I guarantee you they come out looking amazing. Over time with more opportunities and practice, these things will naturally speed up. Eric puts his love in his work. He is friendly and full of aspirational vigour. I don’t usually talk during haircuts, but I do enjoy talking to the guy. Give Eric a shot, he won’t disappoint. Save yourself the trouble looking. Balkan Barbers is the real deal. The team is great and are extremely professional. 11/04/22 update Eric‘s on a Roll - 60 minute skin fade. (Last two pics) I receive compliments at work after his cuts.

Cynthia took me as a walk in and everyone else there were so friendly and welcoming. This must have been the best experience I’ve ever had getting a haircut. I never really knew the difference between a barber shop and a hair salon. They are experts with men’s hair and it shows. I stepped out of there feeling like a new man. Thank you Cynthia and everyone else. You can look at what the other gentlemen are doing with their clients’ hair. In fact, that’s how I was able to make a decision about how I wanted my hair to look. If you’re in Jersey City you need to check this place out. They will make you look great.

This review is about Eric. I have had my hair cut by him a few times over the past months, and I can honestly say that he is one of the best barbers I’ve had. The team at Balkan has done a great job teaching Eric and it shows. He’s a super personable guy, and he makes the haircut a very enjoyable experience. He may still be an apprentice, but he does not lack the skill to give a great cut. This entire shop is full of awesome barber and the vibe is great. I would highly recommend

Rolled the dice trying to find a new barber shop and got the best haircut I've had in the last 6 years. Cynthia was excellent and did a perfect job fading my hair and did wonders with scissors. She was able to correct the cut for the style I was going for and pointed out the issues with what previous barbers were doing. She was very professional and really knows her stuff. The shop itself has a great atmosphere and I'll definitely be back soon.

Been going to Al in Balkan Barber Shop for years now. Now that my two boys got older now we all three come together. Love it. It's a dad+sons tradition now. Highly recommended. Old school quality and attention to details + modern creativity, flair, and style. Bottom line - Très Chic! All the guys n gals there are great. Lively conversation, everyone at the top of their game. Word of advice - make your appointment in advance - especially with Al. They are a busy locale - must be a good reason for that.

Balkan Barber Shop is the place to get your haircut downtown. Al has a great team, and keeps a laid back, barber shop vibe. I used to get my haircut by Al, but you need to book with him far in advance. About a year ago, I started to have Cynthia cut my hair, and she is the best! She does a great job making me look my best!!

Been going here for a year now and my haircuts are always consistent. John has been cutting my hair and gives me the freshest cuts in the area. I love the online system where I just have a recurring appointment every 4 weeks. Simple. I get a phone call form Eric before my appointment to remind me. It's a great modern system that I prefer to walk-ins because I never have to wait for my seat. The shop runs like clockwork - - it is always clean and I'm never waiting for my chair. And because the appointments are all 30 minutes , I never feel rushed. It's plenty of time to cut my hair. At other shops that were walk ins I felt like barbers rushed through my cut to get another client in the seat. Well not here. Thanks John for always taking care of me. I'll see you in another 4 weeks for a fresh cut.

I’ve been to Balkan two times so far, and both were among the best haircuts I’ve ever gotten. I’ve been burned by lackluster chain barbershops in the JC area before, and Balkan has been the perfect antidote in terms of advice, attention to detail, and genuine care. You can tell as soon as you sit down how committed all the barbers are to their craft and to providing their customers with the best possible experience. If you’re near the grove street PATH station and you need a quality haircut, do yourself a favor and check them out—it’ll be worth every penny.

Well I have to start off by saying Cynthia is an amazing barber, my hair is difficult to cut and she gave me exactly wanted. Her skills and attention to details are insane! Ever since I got my cut from her I never returned to my old barber. If you like a natural clean look where your hairline isn’t getting pushed back cyn is the one to go to she’s amazing. Hands down best barber I’ve ever had.

I haven't gotten a haircut since pre-covid (approximately 2 years). I was in town for a wedding and figured I should probably get cleaned up a bit before the event. I looked up the reviews and figured I'd give this place a try. I received a shave from Nolan, he did a great job and made the straight razor work look easy. Cynthia did my cut, I didn't give her much guidance; I just said "something modern and short that you think would look nice" she seemed to enjoy cutting off the pony tail and did a fantastic job with cut!

Update: Got a cut from John, perfect cut. Super quick, and was able to get me in on short notice. The guy knows hair exceptionally well. He was able to do a scissor fade on the sides and trim the top in 15-20 minutes, most others I go to take twice as long for the same quality. Eric did a great job fixing some of my wife’s mistakes from a home cut. He listened to my requests and blended his craft from the errors already present. He took a bit longer than I anticipated, but paid attention in great detail as he is an apprentice and needed approval from a senior and me obviously. I've been going to John now for 5 years. Part of the reason I never left a review is because I'm selfish, and don't need him getting more booked up than he already is. John gives THE best cut, hands down, no questions asked. Top to bottom everything you want in a barber. I don't want to hear about the guy who's been cutting your hair, in your neighborhood, since you were 8, but to this day still can't use scissors. STOP. Go see John, enjoy the banter between he and Al, and you'll be going back.

Balkan has a great classic barbershop vibe and all the staff is friendly and welcoming. I have been getting my haircuts from Nolan for two decades now, because once you find a barber this good - STICK WITH HIM. The conversation is usually light and humorous, but sometimes it can be enlightening. Other times I just sit there in silence enjoying the peace. Nolan can always read the mood and let the customer be in control. He is very accommodating and his haircuts are on point! Highly recommend this Barbershop.

Amazing haircuts and very efficient! They're very attentive to the small touches, e.g. using a straight razor to finish up the neck, sides, and edges for that really clean look; texturizing with scissors; and rolling out cowlicks. Even with all of the finishing touches, you can get in and out super fast. Al and his crew are also very friendly. The only downside is that they're super popular, so it's best to book in advance for an appointment.

To put it succinctly, the perfect experience. John took his time and gave me a consultation before the cut. I'll be honest, I walked in there with a terrible cut. John was the consummate professional, shared with me how he planned to save the cut, and gave me insight into how to maintain properly. Best barber in North Jers! I’ve been going to John for years now and his haircuts have only been getting better and better every time. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t even need to say anything when I sit in his chair, he knows what to do right away and always does a fantastic job. He notices anything that’s off with the cut before I can even say anything. I can make an appointment with him easily and he’s always reliable whenever I need a cut. Prior to John, I was going into NYC to a men’s salon and paying an arm and a leg. It was difficult to find a barber that can shape and handle longer hair that flows, giving a suave and professional look at the same time. John handles it with ease, every time. He even came to give me a cut in my parking garage during the pandemic. I’ll be going to him until he stops cutting which hopefully won’t be anytime soon.

I initially went to them because I lived down the street, but now I live ~30 minutes away and STILL drive over here for an appointment. Super friendly people and the pricing is fair compared to other places in the neighborhood that show less attention to detail in a haircut. Getting an appointment online is a breeze, but make sure you lock yours in at least a week in advance because they do fill up.

The first thing you notice when you walk in this quaint barber shop is charm. The charm just smacks you in the face as it emanates from the brick walls, to the warm light, to the very carefully curated decorations. Unless the barbers are victim to their high degree of focus, you are also always greeted warmly. I've rarely had to wait to get seated as they are always on time, and when I have waited it has only been for a few minutes. Overall they are professional, punctual, friendly, and make you feel comfortable, which is everything I want from a barber shop. Oh yeah and of course, my hair always looks great when I leave. Al is the man and definitely knows how to run a great barber shop. Big ups to him and the rest of the squad for keeping Jersey City fresh.

I LOVE this place-- the haircuts are great, the ambiance is old school barber meets steampunk cool-- (they even have an antique cash register that they actually use)! I took a friend in there to get spruced up, and they made him look fantastic. **Best of all though is the owner AL (who is one of their master barbers), whom i stop by to chat with when I'm nearby, just because he's such a warm, friendly guy. I started getting my hair cut by Al a few months ago when my barber of 10+ years had to take a leave of absence due to medical reasons. For anyone who has had the same barber for that long they understand how difficult it is to find a new barber. A few buddies recommended Al and let me tell you, I have gotten the best haircuts of my life. I am not an easy customer to accommodate. Every time I go in I have a different way I want my hair cut, whether that be from the length of the top to how high I want my skin fade to go. And Al, ever the professional has the conversation with me and gives his honest opinion and I am beyond satisfied with every haircut. He is a true professional in every sense of the word and a master using both the scissors and clippers. This is not to mention the environment of the shop, which is extremely welcoming. On one occasion my pregnant wife tagged along and not only did all of the barbers congratulate her and I but the other patrons did as well. This barbershop has the feel of an old time neighborhood shop in the sense that everyone is super friendly and welcoming. This was my honest review of a shop that I really enjoy being a customer of, an extremely talented barber, and an all around decent guy!

Don’t judge a book by its cover. I was a little nervous when I walked into this barbershop the gentlemen were a little older so I didn’t think they could handle my hair. But let me tell you with age comes experience. Alex cut my hair and I can hands down say it was the best haircut I received in years it was almost like he has been cutting my hair for years and knew exactly how I wanted it cut without even explaining much. I visited for the 1st time today and the reviews are spot on. Jersey City has many barber shops and this place is the first I've found that can cut my hair (men's medium length) and provide a perfect fade. Prior to my haircut, I watched as customers left and each barber made sure their customers were happy. In addition, the owner sincerely cares about each customers experience. He asked me multiple times throughout the process if I was satisfied. Online booking is a huge bonus as well. This is my new spot.

I've been going to Balkan Barbershop for months now, and I get a hair cut every week with Al. Each time is a great experience. Al is very personable, and a highly skilled barber. In fact, I have went to different barbershops in Manhattan and Jersey City before finding this one, and the cut and fade I get from Al is by far the best. I just had my first hair cut at Balkan with Al - last appointment of the day, on a Friday, and I was still given the most impeccable service as if I was the first appointment of the day. A great job by Al and excellent service. Al is a true professional in his field - he is a master barber. My hair looks exactly as I wanted it and my style is not an easy cut. Al took a lot of time to ensure everything was immaculate, checking multiple times throughout my cut. I have been going to Balkan Barber shop ever since I moved to Jersey City. You need to book an appointment in advance but it's possible to get a walk-in as well. I don't have experience with other barbers in the shop, as I've only gotten my hair cut by Al. Al is great, ge genuinely cares about his customers and is a very friendly guy. He gives you his genuine opinion. I told him that I might want the top shorter initially, but he told me to trust him and just wait until he's blow dryed it, since hair typically looks different wet vs dry. I trusted him and definitely would have regretted cutting the top shorter. He really takes his time and cares. Balkan Barber Shop has become my go to barber shop in Jersey City.

Al and the gang are truly top notch and wonderful people through and through. Coming out of the stay at home order here in NJ, the last time I had cut my hair was in early February, and my hair was longer compared to where it normally is (~4 on top and 3 inches on the sides). My barber of 10+ years had closed unfortunately in Jan as the owner of the building sold to a new Buyer, so I was looking for a new barber. I did alot of research on the boards, between Yelp and Google (and the Jersey City subreddit, ha). After going through, I decided on Balkan because it seemed to have universally positive reviews and was just a train stop away from JSQ where I lived. I booked an appointment for Thursday the 9th at 2pm and walked in thinking I'd have to wait 15-30 minutes like at other shops. Instead, I was brought in within 1 minute of arrival. The barbershop is a really unpretentious and modern shop. It's got a clean air conditioned feel, with the brick interior giving it that intimate touch. Alex and Reza (the two other barbers) and Al had such a great rapport. They were off on a Starbucks run and the three were joshing one another out the door. The minute I walked in Al greeted me amicably and asked me how I liked to cut my hair. I showed him 2 pictures (front and side view) of my normal classic tapered side part and he immediately understood. Within 20 minutes he cut down my mop head down to a very professional and clean side part. I was personally blown away. Al blew away every one of my expectations. It was a truly wonderful experience for me. He's a virtuoso and a perfectionist when it comes to hair. As the haircut progressed, he always took 10 seconds to ensure that we were going in the right direction. He was also a very pleasant conversation with a love of life and a positive attitude which is much needed during these trying times. I'm very happy I've found a professional who I can return to in the coming months (and hopefully years) for my haircuts. Before meeting Al, the quaint shop was a hairdresser that never seemed to be open. As soon as Al took over, the entire block of Barrow between Columbus and Newark seemed to be reinvigorated with new life and energy. He turned the spot around overnight and developed a sophisticated barbershop that caters to the much-needed market in-between the extremes of prices offered in the local Jersey City neighborhoods. Since opening, I've brought my son, from infant to toddler, to hang out practically daily, and watched Balkan Barber grow. Over a couple years, Al added two new chairs and went through a few hair stylist professionals, all of whom dedicated their time to stay up-to-date with cutting techniques and education in their trade. With each friendly stylist having their own methods and styles, the Balkan Barbers (Al and, as of this review, Alex, Reza, Desiree) have earned my trust to cut my hair anytime. And while I've seen some crazy situations at barbershops over the years, the other day, I've recently experienced probably the most impressive thing I will ever see, EVER. I was in Al's chair getting cleaned and a fly the size of pea started flying right between myself and mirror... Al mumbles something about fly and quickly snaps his forward. The fly seemed to bounce in midair and I realized that Al actually hit the fly and managed to snip off the wing and practically cut the fly in half! I've only seen that done in the Karate Kid... my barber is officially Mr. Miyagi!
