HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! This was my 1st time at Northern Lights Barbershop and will definitely NOT be my last. I came in with a haircut emergency and was taken care of with the utmost respect and treated with 5 star professionalism. Dar was very welcoming and fixed my hair disaster. I came in for a complete head shave and beard trim. Things were looking good at first but then 3 or 4 people came in and I ended up with an incomplete head shave and no beard trim. I went home and Norelco'd the stubble left on my head myself and trimmed my beard. I would recommend, since they do not do appointments, make sure you go in when it's not busy, otherwise they may feel pressured to hurry you along. They were absolute angels about my dog being with me, he is a service dog but he did not have his equipment on so they seem to treat any dogs that enter with much love. Great place.

The most awesome Old Western Country decor makes this place feel like the Wild West in the 1800's. My stylist is Marleigh and she's awesome but it's a family run business and everyone there is great! I'm always happy with how my hair comes out!

I have been there twice. On both occasions I asked for styling suggestions based on my needs and they're understanding, helpful, and not pushy in any way. Like most barber shops it doesn't look like much on the outside, but it's warm and the staff are welcoming when you come in. It is* a smaller shop with about 3 barbers available most of the time. So lines tend to form at certain hours. It's a rustic, old timey scene with plenty of art and some antique equipment to admire while you wait. A regular haircut was about $15-20 if I remember correctly. Which is fair for most places these days. You can ask for a specific barber with no problems if you prefer it. A couple of fun facts: it seems like they have non-alcoholic beverages for purchase in-store in case you need it, and there just happens to be a slightly more private "luxury" lounge with a low wall for one of the chairs for haircuts. If you get lucky you'll get to sit back there.

Been going here on and off for several years now. You can generally get a decent cut (as long as it's a clipper cut) depending on the barber. The problem is that the staff is constantly turning over so that just as you're finally settling into a new barber who you can trust with your hair -WHAM- they up and quit! The only seeming constants are the owner (who cut my hair once and did a poor job) and her daughter/niece(?) who I have not had cut my hair. I've gotten some good haircuts here (and less frequently some not as good ones). The reason for my rating is that because of the staffing issues it really is kind of a mixed bag as far as what you're going to get when you sit down in the chair.

Great neighborhood barber shop! The service is quick, the haircuts are quality, the prices are reasonable, and the whole staff is super friendly. I often bike to work, and they even let me store my bike in the shop while I’m getting my hair cut. What more could you ask for???

They did an amazing job on my sons hair! He is extremely picky when it comes to his fade and they listened perfectly and he loved it! Also the decor inside is vintage and the seating is comfortable. Their prices are very reasonable as well!

There is very few places I feel like I need to write a review about, and this place so happens to be one of them. As soon as you walk in you instantly feel welcomed, the ladies there will make you feel like you've been a customer for years!! The whole staff is super helpful,very reasonable prices and amazing service. I have been bringing my son here for 5+ years to get his haircuts. Dar is beyond patient, listens to what my son wants and takes her time with him. She has always given him the best haircut! I would recommend this shop to anyone who values an amazing haircut. I am giving this establishment 5 stars! I worked there for 3 years and I learned a lot along the way. This barbershop is a unique gem in Anchorages Midtown area. For clients, you will enjoy your experience there seeing as though the owner is bubbly and hilarious. She always staffs herself with adequate and friendly stylists, so you will be well taken care of. For future stylist, you will be able to make a lot of money. It really isn't a bad set up at all. I have moved on for my own personal growth, and will always have fond memories. Went in after looking at reviews for various barber shops around town. While I didn't get my hair cut by the fabled Darlene, I still got a quality cut. The barber was considerate of what I wanted done and what the end goal for my hair was, was quick while still being precise, was attentive and helpful, and was very friendly without being pushy. Came in Tuesday morning, so there wasn't much business, so can't say as to the rush times, but they received multiple phone calls while I was there, and while my barber was the one answering the calls, she didn't let that drive her approach with me. I enjoyed the environment, and it was clean, quiet, and very cosy. For a first time haircut in Anchorage it was a great experience and will definitely see me again.

I have had my hair colored and cut here many times and they always do a great job. They can cut a wide range of hair including small kids, teenage boys and long hair. My husband gets his hair cut and beard trimmed here every time and there is usually little to no wait time. We will always recommend them to visitors and anyone looking for a new barber shop!

This is the best barber shop in town, I've been going there since my kids were tiny, tiny like 2 and 3 years old, and it's always been the best experience. They're all grown now and they'll still go in and get a haircut at Northern Lights barber shop. I don't even consider going anywhere else because I've always had such a great experience you don't wait long it's always the haircut you want and they're always friendly to so I would say if you're looking for a barber shop or even if you're not going to get a haircut then you won't go anywhere else.

Maybe I should give a bad review so this place doesn't get more crowded ;) j/k. The barbers here are great and work really hard to establish a relationship with each and every customer where possible. The only thing I would pass on is that they do not accept anything except cash for payment however there is an ATM inside the location. If your bank rebates ATM fees then this is not a problem. If not I'd suggest bringing $20-$40 dollars depending upon what you are looking to get done (hair cut, shave, beard trimming, etc.).

I'm looking for a place to get my beard trimmed and shaped. I haven't picked a barber shop yet because of how long it takes to grow a beard and I'm afraid of a mess up. Can anyone confirm they do a good job at beard trims? UPDATE: I went in since this place has a a lot of good reviews and Im happy i did. great service and great hair trim and beard trim at a affordable price. will be going back in the future. i recommend going to them.

Quincy gave me the BEST haircut my entire life... and it was on the first try, she's been my barber ever since.. I tried different barbershops on days that she was off and was not satisfied and would always end up coming back to her or her colleagues. If this was a telenovela, i guess you can say my hair is in love with her hands and skills. The prices here are also unbeatable. Now that I'm in Tennessee, I cant find anyone on the same standard or skill level. do i need to say more?

I just PCS’d here and needed a fresh cut BAD, after looking at reviews from about 25 spots this place caught my attention. Even tho I’m a guy, I’m super picky about my hair and cut since my hair isn’t the best kind for a military cut. That being said, after my run down of what I was looking for/needing done to achieve a good look, they NAILED IT! This place will have my business for the nxt 3 years. funny story, when I was 12-13 I came here for every hair cut. Then one time they really wrecked my hair. Like I don't know what happened but they took off way too much hair and I ended up with a super high buzz cut. Like it looked like a borderline Mohawk but wide enough to make it look like I had a fat yamaka on my head. Anyways after that experience I literally went to the sears across the street, bought hair clippers and taught myself how to cut my own hair. I did that for the next three years.Eventually I recovered and learned how to trust again, I moved away, time passed, and I had many haircuts. Then a few weeks ago, I ended up stopping in Alaska for a bit. I needed a haircut so I decided to try out the barber shop one last time. I walked in and asked for a "fade up the sides into the top" and "to trim the top". Pretty straight forward. But the individual cutting my hair literally ignored my request to fade my hair and just went in and used a 1.5 guard all the way up and around. When I noticed this I asked her why didn't she fade my hair and she was like "oh you mean blend?". bruh. There is nothing to be confused about the word fade. literally googling "fade hair" will tell you that. I know if I asked any other barber in town to fade my sh*t they would understand. Now im out here looking like a d*mn paintbrush. Anyways, it really doesn't look that bad, but if you really wanna look good, go somewhere else. This place isn't bad, just don't go there expecting to walk out looking better than you did when you walked in. perfect for people under the age 12 or stably married guys aged 35+. Five stars for motivating me to learn how to cut my own hair.

Gotta say I'm a bit disappointed. This place has always given the best cut in anchorage. I've always been pleased no matter who cut my hair. For that reason I'm still giving them a well deserved 5 stars. With that said, I have to complain a bit about the hours, or lack thereof, around the 4th of July holiday. They were closed Saturday the 30th, Sunday the 1st (normal), Monday the 2nd, and Wednesday the 4th (understandable). The hours posted on the door for Tuesday the 3rd were from 9am to 6pm, so imagine my frustration after rushing from work to get there before closing only to find the doors locked and lights out before 5:30. For someone like me who has very small windows of opportunity to do things like get a haircut, that was very precious time wasted because of something that seems very unprofessional and inconsiderate. I will continue to give them my business for now, and hopefully this message is read and is taken to heart to prevent something like this from reoccurring in the future.
