This place is one of the reasons I love New York! It is no frills with kind and quick service. The rates were better than what I could find at the airport. I had trouble finding the place as it is inside Vegan, a restaurant, but called and the shop owner helped me find it. He dealt with walk-in customers, phone calls, and random questions kindly and efficiently. Thank you!

Great service! The shop owner is very nice. I am a coin collector and today when I asked if I could see the coins to pick out the ones, I need for my collection he was very understanding and allowed me to go through them! I will definitely visit again if he gets any new coins!

Driss is very professional, honest and provides excellent and quick service. He has euros, pounds, Canadian dollars, Japanese yen readily available but if you need any other currency, call in advance so he can get what you need. He offers some of the best rates and I definitely recommend his service if you need any currency exchanged! Walk in through the vegan restaurant and he’s located in a small office on the right side.

Looked around for a currency exchange place and found this hidden gem! After exchanging currency, the gentleman asked if I knew about the currency I was going to use. Since I wasn't familiar with the worth of it, he gave me advice on understanding the exact worth of the foreign currency compared to USD. As well as a trick to quickly calculate the worth when I view foreign prices, to avoid spending more than I needed to. I appreciate the advice and knowledge. Definitely the best rates I've found so far in NYC! I usually use another merchant (recommended by another friend) but this time the rates they gave me were poor and I was not happy! I am glad I did more research and discovered Peoples Foreign Exchange instead. I called before heading down to make sure the currency I needed was available and if they had a range of denominations (this is not always easy to come by) - which he did! the owner Driss is very humble and helpful. It is a small space "inside" the Vegan Cafe , but don't let that fool you! or would you rather a "fancy" store that charges you more?! To each their own, but I will choose a genuine and good value deal everytime!

I've been using this guy before my trips for years. Very reliable and always has the best exchange rate with very low and transparent commission. Used to be across from grand central but since the pandemic has moved to a small vegan fast food place on 45th. Driss is trustworthy. Highly recommend. Not sure what baseline price the previous reviewer was using, but you never get the published rate unless you're doing a credit card transaction. Wondering if they shopped around. It's worthwhile tracking down this place. I've been to a couple of other exchanges in NY (one just a block up at the Currency Exchange) and they RIP YOU OFF BIG TIME when it comes to service fee. The rates may be the same or a little higher at the People's Foreign Exchange but their service fee is very reasonable. And they have excellent service. I did 3x exchanges here whilst in NY in May 2013 and I am very happy with the service. Not a lot of smiles but great service.

I've used this currency exchange several times prior to trips to Canada. The rates I've gotten have always been better than I could have gotten at Toronto. They also buy back currency but I've never tried that service as I always end up spending all my foreign money outside of the US. This is convenient for me and it saves a few bucks. I'm a fan.

I tried everywhere to get Suriname Dollars for my upcoming vacation. My bank did not trade them, AAA did not trade them, CitiBank did not trade them, and the local exchange places around the Grand Central area did not trade them.
