Reviews of Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken
We always stop here while in DC. The Chicken sandwiches on the donut with hot sauce are small but tasty packing in a great bite. Honey butter is very good.
We thought our sandwiches tasted a little different this time like something was missing but we were not sure. Not bad but just not like we remembered.
We also ordered 6 random donuts to go and they were tasty. We got to sample small bites when we got home. They were very thick and almost cake like.
Order total was $ 46.20 for 2 chicken sandwiches and the 6 donuts.
Interesting selection of pastries available in DC. The dough was nice, light, and fluffy. The fillings were truly delicious. The tart cherry and peanut butter and jelly were incredible. I'd highly recommend stopping by for a quick doughnut or chicken sandwich.
Got the fried chicken on cheddar biscuit. Added cheese, egg and the honey butter. Hot sauce onto the side. Also a raspberry cheesecake donut. They were pretty good and satisfied my chicken biscuit craving. I should have added bacon too. Donut was fine. I'd go back to try again, and try the Cinnamon donut.
Ok, first thing first, this is not the cheapest place to get donuts in the DC area, but you’re probably not looking for the cheapest option! Cost aside, the food was amazing! I went here a couple times during my recent trip to DC and everything I had was amazing. I had the breakfast chicken sandwich on a cheddar biscuit, the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough donut, the Maple Bacon donut, and the PB&J donut. The restaurant is carry out only, but they have seating out front. This is a must checkout restaurant if you’re in the DC area!
I'm a huge donut fan, so naturally I perused Yelp in hopes of finding some good donuts when we were visiting DC. This spot came through!
My husband and I shared:
- Raspberry Lemonade Donut
- PB&J Donut
- Blueberry Muffin Donut
I loved all of them. I think my order of preference would be PB&J, Raspberry Lemonade, Blueberry Muffin, but I would happily have any of them again.
I stop here every time I visit DC. The chicken fingers are smaller in size but you get a lot! And the tater tots, yum! Get their honey mustard dipping sauce, it's got a bit of zing to it. I've had the BBQ sauce too, equally delicious. DO NOT MISS the donuts!! I got their holiday Christmas Cookie donut, and wow is it good. Not overly sweet, but it is a bit on the heavy side. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. They also serve breakfast, and they have a beer haus right next door. Don't delay, check out Astro today!!!
This is what you’re looking for if you’re looking for an actual flavored donut. They commit.
Instead of calling it a a Oreo donut and crumbling ores on top of a plain yeast donut, this place does not just sprinkle something on top and call it a day.
The key lime pie donut was amazing and the banana was super banana-y. A little too ripe, but I applaud the thoroughness.
Majority of them are stuffed with a unique inside, I think mainly flavored puddings
I chose the PB&J donut myself and the Banana Pudding donut on a staff recommendation. The banana pudding was good but if I had to pick I’d go with the PB&J. The shop is tiny so you kinda have to just get in and get out; there is outdoor seating which could probably turn visiting here into more of an experience, but as it was so cold today I just had to get my food and go. I like when going out for food is more of an activity, so that part was kinda sad, but the donuts were good. I might return when the weather is warmer to try their chicken.
I ordered a two piece dark chicken with a side of tater tots through their website. My order was ready by the time I arrived. Unfortunately, I came late in the day so they were sold out of their cherry blossom donuts and I didn’t feel the need to purchase a different flavor. The breading was crisp and flavorful but the tater tots were a bit soggy though that is likely from sitting in the to go container. I received a breast instead of a thigh so I was a bit disappointed but the white meat very very moist.
Chicken sandwich was amazing! And the doughnuts were equally as good! Service was quick, they don't have indoor seating so we ended up taking ours to go.. but if you're in the DC area I would recommend this place for a quick treat
We are proud donut aficionado have tried hundred of donuts around the world. Astro donuts is the go to luxury donut location in downtown DC with fun concoctions. While the toppings are fantastic the donuts themselves are very dry and disappointing.
The peanut butter and jelly donut tastes exactly like a pb&j that was made on old dry bread.
The jelly filled donut has lots of semi-sweet jelly in which is great and powdered sugar coating that doesn't get all over you. Again though the donut itself is very dry and dense.
Given the price and quality of the donut itself I recommend trying a donut once for the novelty but otherwise I would not recommend.
This place is tiny, with a few tables outside, but it's worth the wait. I liked the cake donut the best, but the star of the show was the chicken. I tried it both on the cheddar biscuit and brioche bun...it's basically a toss up. The staff is very friendly as well.
Yum donuts!! My favorite local donut shop. Chocolate anything is great and I usually try the seasonal donut - right now its a Cherry Blossom donut with a jam filling and it's my new favorite. Fried chicken and donuts. Cant go wrong.
BYO chicken sandwich with a vanilla glazed donut! This was very good but the only downside was that it was missing flavor in the chicken and donut! I recommend getting something else to go with it as it may not be fulfilling for everyone!
One of very few donuts places around central DC that is actually opened on Saturday. Fast service and freshly baked donuts. Absolutely nothing better along side a cold brew. Had cream brûlée(10/10), bacon glazed(7/10), PB&J (10/10). Only BP&J survived to be pictured.
Maple bacon doughnut was super light, cookie dough doughnut was very good. The PBJ doughnut was full of strawberry filling. The astro sandwich with comeback sauce was delicious and the southern heat sandwich was tasty as well! Definitely worth a visit!
Friend chicken on a cheddar biscuit. Honey butter. Hot sauce. Flaky, juicy, perfection. Not too salty or sweet. An extremely well done combo. Very fresh and delicious 🤤 …
The chicken was dry and not as savory as expected, likely because I went just as it was closing. The doughnuts were delish! Got the maple syrup and bacon as well as the PB&J.
I wish I got to sit down to eat my honey chicken on a cheddar cheese biscuit when it was "fresh out da frying pan"! Brought it back to the hotel, it smacked! Wow! PBJ donut! Must check out if you're in DC!
Staff was friendly. Really fast service. Food was ready by the time I got my coke from the mini fridge and opened it. Got the southern chicken sandwich with the savory donut with hot sauce on the side. The savory and slightly sweet and hot sauce combo was so good.
Tried the creme brulee, cherry blossom, tiramisu and chocolate cookies and cream doughnuts. Also, the chicken biscuit with hott sauce. My personal favorite was the chicken biscuit honestly. I liked it more than the doughnuts. Only downside, nowhere to sit on a cold morning.
The Asteroid Chicken sandwich was amazing! Also amazing were the doughnuts. Service was quick, and friendly. If you're in the DC area I would recommend this place!
I love their donuts, every time I went DC I will buy their donuts and took them back nyc. My favorite right now is Chocolate Cake, Bourbon Pecan, and Chocolate Candy Bar.
Cute little spot, more like a sports bar/lounge really. The food was good, they took a long time to bring it tough, I wanna say 1h and it must have been just 4-5 other tables. You have to order online just in case you are not tech savvy. I would go back.
The donuts it’s so good I also tried the fried chicken 2 dark & 2 white pieces , Definitely will come back and playing some games
We bought 4 different types of donuts
S’mores- sugar cookie- pbj- red velvet.
Sugar cookie our favorite.
You can eat them at the side bar, where I order coffee and a shot of JackD.
Astro Doughnuts, since when do you guys put donuts in brown paper bags? These donuts cost way too much to be thrown in the brown bag with tissue paper. Please consider how people have to travel with these wonderful donuts.
My only problem is that my chicken felt stale or not tender/fresh even though I visited during lunchtime. I'm sure they cook large batches of chicken and after some time the chicken is not great. This is just not acceptable for a chicken place. The comeback sauce was pretty good and standard. Outside seating is exceptional. Prices aren't super bad. Good place overall.
This place is awesome. Such a hidden gem. The donuts are great, and their fried chicken sandwiches are amazing!
Be sure to get the sandwich on either a savory donut bun, old bay donut bun or the cheddar biscuit!
BTW the jalapeño coleslaw is SO good!! Nice and fresh, not all gross and mayo-y.
Love this place, and the beer hall is super chill. Will definitely be coming back here!
I ordered for delivery, it was very efficient and fast. I got them within 20 mins and they were really tasty. Will definitely try again!
Sampled breakfast around 9:45 on a Sunday. The fried chicken was near lukewarm, missing the hot sauce, though the honey butter was good and getting a savory donut is a fun change up. The speed the sandwiches came up told me they’re not freshly made. Better ways to start the day. Staff was friendly and there’s a couple outdoor tables.
This place is great. Between the super-sweet dessert style donuts, the savory donuts, the amazing chicken and the really interesting sauces there's something for everyone.
The only thing I can even say against them is the cheese wasn't melted but it's all just so creative I have to give them the full 5 stars
These donuts were delicious. The Crème brûlée donut was a 10/10. The only thing that would make these better is if they were made to order rather than pre-made.
Wonderful stop to get donuts and some yummy chicken. Worth a visit!
There are a few donut places in Northern Virginia and D.C. that do the "unique topping" thing (maple bacon, peanut butter and jelly, pecan pie, etc.) but I don't think any do it better than Astro. I've tried at least a dozen of their flavors and never been disappointed! Their creme brûlée donut may be the best donut I've ever tried. That donut in particular is not the best for a breakfast but it makes an incredible dessert! I also want to say that these donuts are the more fluffy type of donut as opposed to the cake style of donut.
Also, this is a great location if you are a tourist visiting D.C. short walking distance to the Mall and the White House.
We loved Astro Doughnuts!
The doughnuts at Astro were really great! We got the Blueberry Muffin doughnut and Peanut Butter and Jelly doughnut. They both had incredible filling inside with delicious, sugary coating on the outside. The doughnuts were slightly dry but mostly doughy and extremely flavorful. There's not a whole lot of seating other than 2 tables outside the shop.
We'd definitely recommend Astro Doughnuts next time you're in DC! It was great to grab some doughnuts and then start the sightseeing.
1st time here and the customer service was cool. The gentleman who waited on us was more than patient. Food seemed a bit pricey but tasty. Creme Brûlée don't was the bomb!!!! Chicken fingers were a bit dry, but cool.
Lack of public restrooms was a bummer and should be offered..outdoor seating was appreciated.
Amending review to five stars*
Nita reached out regarding the issue offered us a complimentary half dozen. Great response from management.
So... Fried Chicken BLT with BBQ sauce and the moon pie donut. You're welcome.
The doughnuts here are some of the best I've ever had. They rotate some of the flavors monthly. And I love that they are not sickly sweet. I don't eat fried chicken, so I can't comment on that. But the doughnuts are so good!
Good donuts… fresh and very creative selection. I have stood in line for almost 30 minutes to grab a dozen donuts. Worth a try, but it is kind of a long wait sometimes. I really like the crème brûlée. It is absolutely delicious.
Worth the trip! My husband and I decided to drive down from Baltimore to give this place a try based on the reviews by several friends of ours. This place didn't disappoint AT ALL. The Fried chicken and the Doughnuts were BOMB.
The carrot cake doughnut took us back to childhood, like eating homemade cake my aunt baked! The vanilla and cookie dough doughnuts were okay. The chicken fingers were tasty, even if the black pepper was a little forward. Good customer service.
Excellent fried chicken sandwich. The chicken breast is perfectly crisp and not greasy. The doughnut has more of a cake like texture and is very greasy.
DO. NOT. MISS. THESE. DONUTS. You may not know me, but please trust me: this is the best donut on the planet (that I’ve had) and it is IMPERATIVE that you take any required action to experience them. This is not a drill. PB+J donut may make you drop to your knees and scream and weep and curse. I would be honored and privileged if Astro would cater my funeral.
Had the classic south on a biscuit. Portion size was small for the price, chicken was under seasoned and kind of dry. Didn't taste any honey on the sandwich. Very underwhelming experience.
Awesome local spot - I mean who doesn't like fried chicken and doughnuts?? The doughnuts can get expensive especially picking up a few at a time, but totally worth it for the occasional splurge. Their food truck sacrifices nothing in terms of quality, only availability. Love the store.
The chicken sandwich was good. Chicken was moist and the donut fluffy and airy. The maple bacon donut was just the right portion of sweet and salty. The staff were friendly and courteous making this a very pleasant visit for the first time. It is a small shop, so prepare to order and go.
I'll update this when I try the tenders (which looked much more substantial) but the sandwich was laughably small. The chicken was crispy and moist, but the flavors were muted.
We had a great experience here! I requested to make my Chicken BLT Sandwich spicy and it didn't disappoint me, it was really good the chicken has the right spice to it and it was really tender and juicy, I picked Savory donut bun on my sandwich. On the other hand, my husband's Spicy Chicken Sandwich is a little bit disappointing because it was kinda greasy because of the sauce on it (I guess) but still taste really good (if you dont mind a little greasy chicken sandwich). Their doughnuts was fantastic! Really soft and moist and the flavor was on point, my favorite is from their monthly special flavor (Espresso Cookie). The staff here was really nice and polite, we sat at the bar and the bar tender (I guess lol) even let my husband taste some of the beer first before ordering a glass of beer. If you're planning on going here you should expect to find a parking on the street or find a parking lot building because they dont have their own parking lot. All in all I would recommend this place to all the people I know that will visit DC area.
I love the fried chicken on the cheesy biscuit that they offer for breakfast. It's so fresh and delicious. You can get awesome donuts ave great coffee options here as well. If you prefer they also have lemonade and other great drinks too. It's easy to get to and worth the trip. If you're in the area make sure to check it out.
Really good fresh home made tasting chicken. We’re from Mississippi and it taste just like grandma used to make. Tater tots, are just tater tots. And the cheddar biscuit is ok. There was a fairly long wait but they made it fresh for us so it was worth it. There’s a bar inside as well and an adjoining donut shop
Hot fresh flavorful fried chicken. Maple bacon donut was perfect. Pretty quick service. BUT, (opinion follows) could do without the “honey butter” and just serve on a honey glazed donut with the inside out. Ppe in effect.
Skip the savory and go for the sweet. Went right before the lunch switch at 11:30 and ended up with a greasy savory donut with two chicken strips with no sauce at all. The lemon cooler and filled creme brulee donuts were worth the money. Drinks are overpriced. Limited outdoor seating, because really they want to to grab and go. Seasonal flavors. At $36 a dozen, this is a sometimes treat.
Delicious donuts and fried chicken under the same roof! Yes, it’s true. The donuts were so good; I especially liked the PB&J donut. The fried chicken sandwich on a donut is something I still think about on occasion. No indoor seating is a bummer, but they have outdoor seating when the weather permits. I liked the place well enough, I bought a hat to wear back to Kansas.
The donuts here were pretty decent. I want to give them a 4.5 because they made me happy, but it wasn’t a knock it out of the park type of place. As far as prices go, it’s a typical artisanal donut price range ($2-$4). The one thing we were a bit sad about was the lack of indoor seating, so we had to move our donut purchases to a coffee shop nearby.
This is an excellent place to grab some breakfast, lunch, or to get your donut fix. The takeout half of the restaurant is pretty small and can get cramped, but they also have a restaurant side with plenty of seating, TV's, and table service. As for the chicken, it's pretty good; it's flavorful and has a good amount of crispiness. You definitely can't go wrong with a sandwich here (on a savory donut bun). For the donuts, they always have four staple flavors and four rotating flavors. The cake donuts are exceptional! They have a very moist and rich texture. My biggest complaint is that only 1 out of their 8 flavors on any given day is a cake donut. The yeast donuts are pretty good as well, but they don't nail the texture quite as well. They can be just a tad doughy, but the filled donuts balance that out to the point that it's not noticeable. For that reason, PB&J is by far their best staple donut! In summary, Astro Doughnuts is a unique and quite excellent shop, and I'd recommend giving everything on the menu a try if you get the chance!
We visited DC a few weeks ago and Astro donuts fried chicken sandwich was the best thing we ate the entire trip. The donuts are good but the real star of the show was the fried chicken sandwiches. My husband got the chicken sandwich with the donuts and a savory seasoning on top and I got the chicken sandwich with the cheddar biscuit, both of us agree is was one of the best things we’ve ever eaten!
One of the best chicken sandwiches I've had and the donuts are killer. You'd think it's a strange combination but it's really perfect!
Got the peach blueberry cobbler was great. The maple bacon lacked maple flavor but was not a bad doughnut. The blackberry lemonade was pretty good. Little over priced for a doughnut that didn't blow me away. But good for the area.
Unique flavors and filling, not much seating!
I love donuts, so I had to try Astro Donuts while in DC. I tried the Creme Brulee (which was the #1 Donut in DC per Washington Post several years ago) and the Cherry Blossom Donut. The Creme Brulee is fantastic and worth a try; it has the outer shell/crunch of a Creme Brulee, with the appropriate filling. Cherry Blossom was pretty good, with a cream cheese exterior and cherry filling
I'm giving it four stars instead of five, since service was just ok and there's no-where to really sit and enjoy (other than a little table outside). I feel like they are a tad overpriced too, even for fancy donuts.
Astro Donuts is the Georgetown Cupcakes of donuts. They have fried chicken as well. These donuts are amazing. The cremebrule donut is my personal favorite. Although these donuts are not cheap. There is a Dunkin down the street for the people who want to buy junk. To each there own!
Small space, but the doughnuts are unbelievable. I got the PB&J one, and I highly recommend that. My friend got the Key Lime Pie flavor. They were so good, we both went in and got another one for later!
Small fried chicken and doughnut shop in the downtown area. Look out for seasonal sweet and savory menu items, particularly around the holiday season as they're pretty inventive and special. The fried chicken sandwich special is flavorful and works well sandwiched in between the doughnut bun. Unfortunate part is no indoor seating available, and birds are known to come close if you decide to sit outside.
This is a cool doughnut spot. The doughnuts are good and they have a lot of different options for breakfast foods besides just sweets. There is only outdoor seating here. This is a very small restaurant. So if it's cold you might want to get your food to go.
The store is small. No seating indoors, but really there's no reason to stay in. The menu is simple, but after the pandemic I'm sure the line could be out the door.
Really nice customer service - I was given recommendations when prompted, the staff knows what is on the menu and how they taste. I would try the donut bun at least once for the experience. It's light, fluffy, and just a tad sweet when you eat it with a chicken sandwich. I prefer the least highlighted item which is the chessy biscuits!!! Yummy is an understatement.
I wouldn't spend the extra money on the sides. As you can see the jalapeno coleslaw for its size and price...not a great value. The taste was so so. The tots...again...not worth the extra 3 to 4 bucks.
The donuts are seasonal, but the ones they have are amazing!! The cherry cheesecake was delicious.
Yeah, they ask for a tip on the screen when you pay, but I really think it's just the program they use. It gives you the option to tip what you want. So, don't feel obligated. However, they're so nice...why not?!
The price is steep, but if you're looking for a delectable and consistent DC delicacy, make the trip.
CLOSET SIZE STORE! There's a small sitting right outside the place, but don't expect to sit because the place is usually crowed and rightfully so. The donuts are amazing and so are the donut sandwiches. Prices are a tad more than expected, but well worth it. Wish I could've tried everything.
We were in DC and looking for some fried chicken. Heard this place had great doughnuts and fried chicken and that is 100% true.
The fried chicken is very crispy, good seasoning (not spicy but seasoned) and incredibly moist. It wasn't greasy at all.
But the doughnuts, wow. All of them were very fluffy and light. The sweetness was well balanced- it didn't feel like all sugar.
The maple bacon had enough bacon that you could taste it in every bite and wasn't too sweet but the maple was still present.
Key lime (monthly flavor) was well filled and had a nice tart filling to balance the Graham cracker crumb coating.
But the peach blueberry cobbler doughnut was the best. Spiced with a hint of ginger it was not overly sweet at all. You could taste doughnut, fruit, and topping all at the same.
Excellent food. The chicken breast with cheese and bacon on a doughnut was super. The chicken was moist and warm, mixed with the sweet doughnut was different and great. It was also great on the biscuit. The Cherry Blossom doughnut was amazing. I ate it so fast I forgot to photo it. They are expensive but probably worth it. Be aware that there is no seating inside and very little outside. You will enjoy it.
2nd time in DC so always looking for something new. The chicken strips were peppery and spicy, but not juicy. They tasted like popeyes chicken. THE DONUTS on the other hand were awesome. No doubt which ever flavor you choose itd be a great experience.
What a piece of food heaven I found in D.C. on our family trip. A chicken sandwich with a doughnut for the bun 🤔🤔.......sign me up. The fried chicken honey sandwich was so good that I had to get a 2nd one. The maple bacon doughnut had the right crispness to the bacon for it to be enjoyable. …
Pretty good donuts! The prices are high but I expected that for DC. The Samoa was more of a caramel/chocolate favor but the Cherry Blossom was amazing but very sweet.
Roaming Rooster is my favorite fried chicken sandwich from a food truck, BUT Astro's is my favorite fried chicken sandwich from a restaurant. I know they have a food truck too, but I've never came across it.
Regardless, whenever I come here, I always get the Old Bay All Day! Old Bay Doughnut Buns with bacon, lettuce, tomato, delicious fried chicken, with Siracha Buffalo drizzle (instead of their Siracha Mayo). My only criticism is I wish the food was hot or have freshly fried chicken since the good is typically lukewarm so I have to heat it up.
The doughnuts are great! Every month, they change their 4 seasonal doughnuts, but the signature ones are quite delicious, especially the Creme Brulee one.
Small location with no indoor seating. The line inside filled all the available space.
Service was quick once reached counter. They have a limited menu and half dozen or so types of special donuts.
The donut fried chicken sandwich was good. Donut was sweet but not too sweet. Chicken was not hot but was crunchy. Mulitple sause options. I added cheese.
My kid's enjoyed their sandwich and donuts. I thought sandwich was good. The donuts were okay but not great.
There was limited seating outside.
You NEED to stop here! I ordered the maple bacon, pb&j, Nutella and cherry blossom (seasonal) doughnuts and I wish I had more. The pb&j and Nutella were my favorite, but none of them disappointed!
Worth every penny, I went back twice 😂 first time I got the breakfast chicken sandwich in a cheddar biscuit, and the second day I got the asteroid chicken sandwich for lunch. …
I would have given this place 3.5 stars if that was an option. I’m glad we tried it but it was not worth the $130 it cost to feed my family of 7. The donuts were especially overpriced and were only good, not amazing. I did love my chicken sandwich but I think it would have been better with one large piece of fried chicken instead of a bunch of chicken pieces that fall out of the sandwich. Not sure why they have chosen that method, maybe so they can have more crispy pieces?
Tiny restaurant with no seating indoors - just a few tables outside.
Probably the food in heaven tastes like Astro. The shop front is TINY and they don't really have much seating. What they do have is a variety of amazing donuts and some of the best fried chicken. I love the creme brulee donuts. The donuts are square, which is fresh and exciting. The whole concept of a savory donut bun on the chicken seems strange, but it's really good, like a fluffy yeast puff, just trust me on this one. I get the BLT sandwich. The honey mustard is out of this world. It's all greasy and fried and probably horrible for your waistline. But man is it good.
People love this place for their fried chicken, but I go here for one thing: the nutella doughnut. It's the best donut I've had in DC (Sorry, District Doughnut- I still love you). Astro Doughnuts is a tiny store front with barely enough room for 5 people to wait for their doughnuts, but don't let that scare you. The actual dough used in the doughnut is superb and if you like chocolate, order the nutella doughnut
Best chicken biscuit I've ever had anywhere! I was so full but it was so delicious! So happy we visited.
Went to this place for breakfast this morning and it was awesome! I had the fried chicken sandwich on a donut and it was delicious. Someone also had the chicken sandwich on a cheese biscuit and that was great, too. We also tried six of the donut flavors and there weren't any of them we didn't like. Wish they had a location in Georgia!
Loved it! Even bought 2 boxes of donuts for the flight back home. Place is small tho! Big groups wont be accommodated. Outside seating (just a side note)
Unique chicken sandwich. Each bite was a little different, really satisfying! We also tried the pear gingerbread donut, which was unlike any donut I’ve ever had. Yum!
Quality doughnuts with excellent service. There is some seating outside and my only suggestion is to get a fountain for water (that would put the customer experience over the top). Hope this helps!
Tried Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken early Sunday morning. My wife and I pulled up right as they opened the doors. It's a Grab N Go style place with no seating except 4 two seater tables outside. I got the Chicken on cheddar biscuit with sriracha mayo and bacon and my wife got an egg, bacon and cheese on a biscuit. The chicken was moist, perfectly fried and seasoned well, and the biscuit was to die for. This was an excellent way to start a Sunday. We also tried the s'mores donut. Honestly the chocolate donut was a bit too rich for me (and I love chocolate, but this wasnt really a donut). We each took a bite and took the rest home with us for later for a dessert. We will definitely be back again.
Left the hotel to see the national mall early in the morning, didn't eat before arrived. Quick look on Google maps to my finding of Astro's. Very happy we made the walk here. The chicken sandwich and donuts were amazing. Vanilla glazed, regular, donut was the best. Get the fried chicken honey sandwich. Food was so good it was gone before pictures were taken.
Very tasty and also fast service! I got the Southern Classic breakfast sandwich and the honey baklava doughnut. I was happy that the doughnut was not overly sweet.
Great choice if you only have a quick moment to stop to grab something to eat. The chicken here is juicy and the sandwiches are small but mighty filling. Very limited seating (no seats inside and only a few tables outside) so whatever you order you'll likely have to eat it elsewhere. Always and interesting selection of donuts, and they usually have a few chicken sandwich specials to choose from.
Went to grab a quick bite and had a great chicken sandwich. I got it with the old Bay donut bun and the spicy sriccha sauce. It was a bit messy and pricey (8.50) but well worth it.
A must stop for us when we visit DC. They have creative and really great tasting flavor combinations for their donuts. The creme brulee donut is amazing. Last time they had a pomegranate- lemon (I believe) that was so great. I highly recommend grabbing a quick treat!!
I never leave reviews but this one place will definitely stick to my heart,
The staff, the food, the beer selection is on point.
Of course i had a good experience, but regardless of that the place is 100% recomendable.
It's nice to see people working with good attitude
Love chicken an vanilla donuts but my favorite chicken sandwich on donut bomb….
Food here is pretty good. Chicken and tattor tots were hittin. My girlfriend got a chicken sandwich which was really good. Didn't have any donuts when I went tho. And I have a thing for places that charge extra for more sauce. 4 stars.
Very tasty chicken honey on cheddar biscuit. Worth the effort to go and enjoy. No seating or coffee, which is a bummer, but expected now.
I happened to be downtown and decided to stop in for a bite. I had the fried chicken breakfast sandwich on a biscuit with hot sauce. It was lit!! Great customer service from the two ladies upfront.
Our breakfast sandwiches and donuts tasted fine, but were fairly small for the price. Unfriendly, hurried staff even though wasn't very busy.
Delicious specialty doughnuts every day. Such a treat. The cherry blossom doughnut was fun during our visit after seeing all the blooms.
Small location. Crowded, busy and not enough help. The chicken breast was not juicy, but it wasn’t overly dry. Love the way it tasted with the Old Bay doughnut bun. Not sure that I would brave the crowd to go again unless this happens to be the only place in the city for good fried chicken.
Came in for a doughnut and sat down at the bar, restaurant part. Did not realize how big this place was. There was a downstairs gaming part, which I did not explore.
I got a vanilla doughnut and it was soft and yum.
The flavors are all good, chicken sandwich was good. Nothing to really write home about, I'll go to Wendy's and get two for the same price and flavor. I was just super disappointed in the size for the price. Also the bun was super greasy, oil squished out of it.
Astro Donuts is totally unassuming. It is located within walking distance from the portrait gallery in a small shop with a dumbwaiter from the kitchen to the service floor. We ordered chicken sandwiches on a savory donut and a cheese biscuit (.... I have no words for either. They might be two of the best bread food items I have consumed,) and ended the trip with a donut from their creative selection. Limited seating available, but most people take it on the go. GO. HERE. NOW.
Delicious food and deserts! I recommend the chicken sandwich and tots. There are 4 standard donut flavors and 2 rotating/seasonal. Great spot for lunch.
Friendly staff and an odd combination of doughnut and fried chicken that works extremely well. Be warned it can get a little messy! Perhaps need more seating for people looking to eat in, not everyone wants to take it back to work
I visited Astro doughnuts this past summer and am just reviewing it now as I realized I never did. I just got a standard sandwich, and I was NOT disappointed. It seemed pricey, but I was just in DC for the summer, so I'm used to lower prices. It's very comparable to all other places in the area. The fried chicken was delicious crispy, the homemade ranch dressing was creamy and tasted better than anything store bought, and the doughnut was fluffy and perfectly cooked. I'm so glad it wasn't glazed. It was just the doughnut, but it tasted sweet and just right with the chicken. Next time I'm in DC for work or to visit I'll definitely stop back by.
Their chicken strips are delectable, some of the best I've had. And their donuts are works of art. The Creme Brule donut is worth the hype. My only regret is that I didn't try more of their flavors.
My family and I stumbled across this restaurant while in downtown DC. We walked inside and the service was already amazing. I ordered the Chicken BLT and I can honestly say that it is the best thing that I’ve ever eaten. The bun was toasted to perfection and the chicken tasted like it was sent down from heaven. I also ordered a maple and bacon donut and I loved it. One of the best donuts I have ever had. The food here was impeccable and the customer service was amazing. 10/10 would recommend.
Not bad but not amazing. A little overpriced but overall it was meh. I think it's like "hipster" fried chicken. Popeye's is much better even though this place was cute.
Small takeout spot with tables on the sidewalk. Simple menu, but tasty items. Had the Southern breakfast sandwich which was excellent on a biscuit. ( The doughnut option seems a bit too overwhelming for me)
I loved the donuts at Astro, especially the peanut butter and jelly. They’re flavorful, big and decently priced. I would eat them again if I’m back in DC.
Had a treat delivery emergency this morning. Astro Doughnuts came through in a big way by delivering 75 individually wrapped donuts to teachers and staff as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. The school staff LOVED them.
Good fried chicken and within walking distance from me! There is no place to sit. It is purely a take-away spot. Have not tried the doughnuts. It is really not my thing. However, a doughnut fried chicken sandwich would be tempting!
Delicious combination of donut and fried chicken and a little honey butter. Great place and sweet staff. Highly recommend
As you can see from my profile absolutely loved these donuts. Especially the creme brûlée one. Just Delicious 🤤 …
Interesting flavors. Don't be put off by the line if you just want doughnuts. The long wait is for the chicken.
The creme brulee was okay. I normally like anything creme brulee. I liked the peanut butter and jelly.
Old Bay doughnut with the chicken sandwich was delightful, boyfriend got the biscuit friend chicken sandwich I definitely recommend coming if you are in DC
The chicken sandwich is always amazing. Over the last 2 years I have had a variety of donuts and they are always good.
Staff is quick, friendly … and helpful when you can’t decide!
No place to eat in, but I had an excellent fried chicken on a cheese biscuit sandwich. Donuts melted in our mouths!
Awesome place! I got an almond doughnut Salty and crunchy it was really good:)
Store was almost closing time so i guess they were selling few kind of doughnuts.
But it was really delicious❤
I'm not sure if it was just the food, or partly the entire experience, but it was amazing. We were visiting from Santa Barbara, out on the street early on July 4th. Most places were closed, and as we were standing on a corner looking at the map on my cell, a fire truck rolls up and the driver asked us what we were looking for. When we told him breakfast, he said "get in, we are going to the best place". So we did! Great chicken and donut breakfast sandwich! And I had the cherry pie donut...wonderful.
The chicken tenders were very hot, enough to burn me. That's where it's at. The donuts were excellent as well. A lot of donut for the money. They were so good that a random person walking by had to comment on how great they were. Just disappointed that I didn't make it early enough to get a breakfast sandwich.
Food is fantastic! Had a chicken sandwich on doughnut bread, which might sound gross but it was so good. Choose from savory doughnut bread or sweet and choose your sauce.
Absolutely live this place! Always get their fried chicken biscuit which is coated in a honey butter! Also the donuts were amazing. Cherry filled was my all time favorite!
So so so good. The fried chicken biscuit was amazing. They have lots of doughnut options and a really cute patio. Coffee too!
OMG. That cherry blossom donut that had a raspberry filling. Perfectly sweet. The hole made the perfect filling to dough ratio. The raspberry flavor is so intense in a good way. The venue is tiny so be ready to take out in a box or eat right away standing!
The glazed vanilla donut looks amazing but the taste was ok. If you are close give them a try. The chicken looked good.
You have to go here! The chicken was so juicy and delicious, and the donuts are the perfect balance of sweetness to the chicken. I loved this place I wish I could give it 6 stars
I tried this place on a whim and was not disappointed! Here for a mini vacay in DC and was pleasantly surprised by how delicious Astros Doughnuts & Fried Chicken was. I had the fried portabella mushroom sandwich on a cheddar biscuit with tater tots. I’m bougie and preferred the blue cheese while my wife raved about their ranch.
Delicious. Chicken and doughnuts go together even better than I hoped they would. I also finished off with a creme brulee doughnut which was equally delicious.
Phenomenal fried chicken breakfast sandwich and creme brulee doughnut. Gave it 4 stars because filling in hot chocolate doughnut was ice cold. Would definitely go back though.
The name says it all: doughnuts and chicken. The doughnuts change regularly and are not always what I would call appetizing, but when they're good the great. The chicken is my favorite part, though. Always moist and fresh made, the taste is excellent. Remember to bring plenty of napkins.
The chicken strips are tasty, but the star is their cheddar biscuits! Tender, light, flaky, and delicious. I could eat 100 of them.
This place is delicious. It's very small, so no leisurely sitting and eating. However, that's a small price to pay for such delicious food- I speak specifically of the fried chicken on a doughnut... Yum!
Tiny space but they're tables outside. Delicious donuts, very heavy and filling. Even better as a sandwich (Donuts as burger buns)
Delicious doughnuts with a rotating selection of unique and tasty options. Small sitting area out front, but very small inside - basically just a place to put your order in.
Literally everything was amazing! The biscuit chicken sandwich was maybe the best fried chicken sandwich I’ve ever had.
Donuts were delicious and the service was friendly. Be aware, there isn't much in the way of seating, just a few tables outside.
Small place, so you'll be eating outside. But, 100% worth it. Great chicken and the best donut I've ever had!
Perhaps you are the type who thinks donuts and fried chicken don’t go together, but if you do, this is your place.
Excellent fried chicken! Gonna try the donuts next time!
Doughnuts are amazing! Would love to give 5 stars, but the didn't have any chicken when we went 20 minutes after opening. I got all excited for a hot honey butter chicken breakfast sandwich, all chicken items were covered on the board. Got a bacon egg and cheese on a cheddar biscuit(which was awesome), but how are you going to be called Astro's Chicken and Doughnuts and not ha e chicken?
Fried chicken is pretty good, the doughnuts are the BEST part. Must try the cherry blossom doughnut! There's no place to sit inside, only 4 small tables outside. It's a to-go place.
I never had chicken and donuts together but Nita and D the cashier were wonderful. They got me together real quick! Because of them I'm now addicted to the cheddar biscuits.🍗🍩🍴😁😁 …
When I think about DC I think about Astros. It's among my favorite chicken biscuits anywhere. Donuts are great too. I love this place.
Can’t speak about the other doughnuts, but the creme brûlée doughnut was fantastic! Not over the top sweet, just wonderful 😍 …
It was ok, lots of people say it's the beat fried chicken they ever had. In my own opinion, it's not, it was ok, could have been a little tastier. I did not try the doughnuts.
Great-tasting food! Get there early, or you might be standing in a long line! Love the spicy chicken breakfast concept!
Amazing fried chicken and doughnuts! The creme brulee doughnut is their signature doughnut and you must try it.
I found this plqce randomly searching for something to eat. I was blown away by the concept and had to give it a try! I never new i could combine my two favorite foods doughnuts and fried chicken, tassssssty!
Delicious. These breakfast fried chicken sandwich with a cheddar biscuit is the perfect breakfast.
The candy apple doughnut was excellent, crispy and filled with apple goodness.
The maple glazed doughnut was a delight.
We got the Pokemon donuts and they were a great choice. They mixed a ton of great flavors together for this. They also have many other unique flavors.
If you can get the chance to stop in for their breakfast. You don't be disappointed. Honey butter that soaks into the doughnut bun is to die for!
Freshest dang donuts ever. Tasty. Donuts and Fried Chicken. The lady in the shop was very friendly and helpful. The guy on the truck was very nice too. My son saw this place online. He wanted to try it. We drove from WV to DC. Worth it. Will be going back. Thank you for being kind, courteous, and welcoming. The chicken on the donut was to die for.
Came here when they were doing renovations, so I had to order next door. I waited close to 20 minutes for six donuts, and they tasted like they were made the day before. While I was waiting staff made no effort to deal with some crazy lady harassing me.
Absolutely delicious!! Came to Washington from Florida and wanted to try something local and this was perfect!! The chicken was moist and the breading was perfect! Not too thick or thin; absolutely amazing! This coming from a person that is not a big doughnut person! (my wife is though ;) Homemade sauces were delicious! Will definitely be visiting here again on our next trip! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Great Donuts! The vanilla is the perfect example of a glazed yeast donut, the maple bacon is excellent and the breakfast chicken sandwich was super tasty (add jalapeños and the coleslaw)!
Reviewers who found their fried chicken to not meet expectations must've had different chicken than I had because...wow! Best fried chicken I've had in a long time. Cheddar biscuits were flaky and delicious. Jalapeno slaw was also tasty. Oh, and they have doughnuts! Can't forget about those. They were equally fantastic. High-quality, not DD level. Creme Brulee doughnut was good, excellent custard inside, maybe overall a bit too sweet because of the caramelized sugar on top. I betcha they could make a really good Boston Cream donut with that custard. Birthday Cake doughnut was good too. The chocolate cake base of the doughnut was really good. Pricey for what it is? Yeah, but it's DC and I don't mind paying more if the food going to be good.
Awesome fried chicken doughnut. Since shop is small the drinks choice is very limited. Staff are not the friendliest people.
What a cool little place. The donuts were amazing, especially the crème brûlée one. Didn’t get to try the fried chicken.
Doughnuts delish, chicken...meh. Nice setting, ample space.
The donuts and chicken are outstanding. Some of the best I've had in any city.
It doesn't quite get 5 stars though because the coffee is awful - tastes kind of like the stuff they give you on airplanes or the stuff they include with cheap hotel rooms. Donuts this good need at least a palatable cup of coffee to go with.
Can’t recommend the Fried Chicken Honey enough, deliciously fried chicken with honey butter, hot sauce, served on a doughnut? I’m in. Will come back on my next trip to DC.
Sandwich was fantastic. The almost $4 cold brew was a can (the name of the restaurant isn't cold brew coffee , donuts and fried chicken, so not a deal breaker. Ha!), but I will definitely make another stop next time I'm there.
Amazing.
Will say that I don’t think you should eat a meal before eating this donut because they are filling. But in the best way. Best donut Ive had in DC
The restaurant is confusing. No one greeted us upon entering. If you order at the table it charges you an additional 25 cents vs ordering at the front. The bathrooms were really dirty, leaking water, ugly ceiling, dirty sticky floors etc. The Astroburger was good but very dry!
Best donuts you could have. Please note that the place is tiny so this is basically a spot to take out. These were the December flavors.
I placed an order online and the thing said order ready at 10:54 which was 45 min later so I went down to cancel and the ladies inside were like no way we can do it now! So they very kindly made the order. Very helpful. Donuts are amazing. So Delicious and very soft. Love it here.
Excellent if not the best fried chicken in town. Crispy and juicy, delicious. Their strawberry guava donut is incredible, very fresh and soft. Can't get this type of quality at any of the fried chicken or donut chains. Very friendly staff. I just wish I could eat here everyday. Depending on the time of the day you visit you might be waiting in a long time to eat here, but it's worth the wait. They only have seating outside and very limited area, maybe 4 or 5 tables.
I thought we were going to a restaurant when this establishment is just a small space we can only eat outside so to me it was a letdown I just ordered a coffee and a brioche but my heart was set on other things
Astro has delicious donuts and fried chicken sandwiches! I’m a huge donut fan, but I think I liked the fried chicken even more. It came on the perfect biscuit and was great quality overall. The cherry blossom donut makes for a great Instagram moment during cherry blossom season in D.C.! Only complaint is how small the joint is. It can be very crammed on nice days with the line extending outside. It doesn’t take too long, but it’s very crammed. I recommend taking it to a nearby park to chow down, but there is outdoor seating. Completely worth it!
I've been here several times, always awesome. The cheddar biscuit sandwich is top.
The best biscuits I’ve had! The fried chicken was really good as well. The chicken fingers were good, but just a little dry. The doughnut was amazing as well. These guys do everything well. I wish I tried a chicken sandwich on a biscuit bun. There isn’t any seating inside, they have a few tables outside, so take that into consideration.
As a fried chicken aficionado – Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken did not disappoint. The chicken hit the perfect balance between crunchy and "butter"y. Yet, for a place called "Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken," I was surprised there was no dish that included fried chicken and doughnuts as a combo ...
Not bad. Pretty good BLT Fried Chicken Donut Sandwich. Several downsides though: only outdoor seating, there are only 2 donuts that you can choose from to be a donut fried chicken sandwich, and it’s a bit pricey ($12.50) for just the entree. Give it a try if you want, but don’t see myself coming back.
Best donuts in the city...hands down. They also have great biscuit sandwiches for breakfast. My favorite donut flavor so far has been the Christmas Cookie Donut back in December. They change their flavors up each month which is cool and keep a few staples. I love going once a month at least to switch things up. Keep your eyes out for their truck too!
I was almost convinced of getting the fried chicken on a donut, but eventually decided on a different place for dinner. However, I ended up getting two donuts (one of which they gave me for free because they were about to close) and they were both good. The maple bacon was sweet and salty, but a bit bread-y, and the bacon wasn't quite crispy enough. PB&J was all around really good. And for the price, this is a solid DC dessert
The chicken was jucy and perfectly seasoned. The donuts were phenomenal. Service was fast.
I visited Astro doughnut for the 3rd time within a year (specifically for a Fried Chicken sandwich). I was pretty exited because I know how good the sandwich was. I got the Asteroid. When I picked up the sandwich water residue came out which wasn’t a good first sign. I took the first bite and was underwhelmed. The sandwich was luke warm at
best. I was pretty upset and the lack of flavoring. I was with a group of people and the mentioned the same thing. Truly disappointed.
I love the chicken and I love the donuts. I wish they put a little more thought into the sandwich itself. I'd like more than the small amount of sauce they put on, and more than just two pickle chips. It isn't reliable and I don't always feel like I'm getting my money's worth. That being said, the flavors are on point.
What the hell did I put into my mouth?
This place has legit donuts, however, someone brought me a chicken donuts sandwich. In my mind, I envisioned a super sweet donuts breading with a bit of chicken in the middle (get the sweet and salty going). This couldn't be any further from what I got. The donuts was solid and savory, not sweet at all. It had old bay essentially baked in. It wasn't sweet at all, but it was amazing. The chicken was crazy tasty. A big hunk of moist solid chicken. I had honey mustard on the top, which was also great.
All in all, this was a rock solid great sandwich, which was a fairly good price for the DC area.
Next time I go back I'll try a real donut, but I loved this place.
Very limited seating at this location, but the food was quite tasty! Chicken tenders were neither dry or greasy and had a great taste. Several bun/sauce options to make a fantastic tender sandwich as well as fried chicken pieces. The days selection of donuts is listed outside as well as inside. Great place to grab a quick indulgent lunch!
So, I landed in DC and I searched to find the nearest place to my hotel that served some sort of breakfast food and had a high rating. This place game up so I headed over and saw that it was a tiny hole in the wall kind of place, nothing wrong with that but I wanted to note it down for others.
The donuts and biscuits are fresh and made there, however when it came to the taste it wasn't anything special. I'm not saying that it was bad, by no means was it anywhere near bad. I enjoyed the biscuit sandwich and donuts that I got, but I've had better in other places. I'd eat again here if it was a matter of convenience and I wouldn't turn away anyone offering me food from here. But I wouldn't really seek it out.
Anybody that knocks this place because it's small clearly doesn't understand rent prices in a city. Eat outside! Awesome food, can't wait to go back
Been going here for years anytime I'm in DC! The fried chicken is nice and hot, the donuts are fresh as can be, and in my most recent trip I got to try a breakfast sandwich that was out of this world! Definitely worth stopping by here if you've never been!
Good chicken and good donuts, but that's it. It's nothing stellar or great, but it is good at least. If you want something different, and reasonably quick, then it's a solid bet; however, if there's any kind of line or wait, I'd keep looking. There are a few outside tables, but otherwise no where to sit (just keep that in mind). Service was fine - folks were friendly enough but a little disorganized. The donuts themselves are dense, cake donuts.
Delicious place for a snack. We had chicken strips and donuts and a coke. A must stop place for some energy for site seeing in DC.
Hands down my favorite donut spot when visiting DC. As a new yorker, I'm partial to Doughnut Plant, but even they don't have a fried chicken menu to compliment their donuts.
Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken was a very cool spot. The works were very interactive and spoke to me about everything the menu had to offer being it was my first time. The lemonade was amazing, and the doughnut was fluffy, light, sweet, and amazing. The chicken was ok and I could’ve done without it. But I like the overall idea of the restaurant and chain.
I highly recommend the sammies over getting pieces of fried chicken. And get them with the cheddar biscuits - YUM. The donuts have great unique standby flavors like pbj and creme brûlée. And seasonal options.
Amazing stop for breakfast! The space is pretty cramped and a little disorganized when it was busy in the morning, but still delicious and reasonably priced.
I will murder someone for the chicken here. Seriously. Doesn't matter the type. They are that good.
The donuts are actually something to write home about too. I've only ever done the carry out - never sat in for more than 10 minutes. Easy enough to get to - no issues to report. Every month they change what special donuts they have. Real good stuff.
They have outdoor seating too if that matters to ya. During mid-day in the summer they're covered by the high buildings so you're not bombarded with blinding sunlight.
Give them a go if you're in DC - seriously.
Excellent food - got an astroid sandwich (to die for), creme brulee donut, and a moon pie donut (both very good) - would highly recommend! everything came out quickly and the chicken was hot, fresh, juicy, and very flavorful!
had to wait in line outside for just a few minutes before going into the tiny storefront to order. they only allowed 2 people in at a time and enforced ppe. outside they had a couple tables if you wanted to eat there, otherwise it's takeout only.
Never had a blueberry doughnut with real blueberries in it 🤩 sorry not much left in the pic. #expansivecoworking …
Wow, I was skeptical of a fried chicken breakfast sandwich but it was readily one of the top three breakfast sandwiches I've ever had.
Best chicken sandwich in DC. The Chicken BLT is amazing and a must have. The doughnuts are also great (some better than others). I hope this place continues to thrive. I take all of my friends that come into town here and every single one of them has loved it.
Love the birthday cake donut! Pricey but so delicious. For the quailty of the donuts i think they are priced fairly. And you can never go wrong with their chicken and tots. The place is small but it's not crowded since most people are in and out. As everywhere else in the surrounding area, there is metered street parking.
Tasty enough for donuts and fried chicken. The donuts can be on the sweet side, although for a fancy donut place, they're probably the most approachable-- some of their competitors are downright intimidating in their array of donuts, some of which look so much like art you wouldn't want to eat them.
That's not the case here-- although the cherry blossom donut was very pretty-- you still will want to dig in!
They're not as mind-blowingly-amazing as they were when the first opened, but they're still more than tasty enough.
Amazing chicken sandwich!! I had high expectations for the doughnuts and now expectations for the chicken. I had the chicken BLT and I loved everything about it. Fresh ingredients, delicious sauce, and great fried chicken. The doughnuts were really good too. Great service, really nice workers.
Best donuts in DC. Their flavors are always on point and unique. To correct other reviews, there is seating and full service right next to the main door. It’s not very clear, but there’s plenty of seats inside. The order counter for pick up is tight. Also, of course it’s pricey and there’s no parking. It’s downtown DC.
But I come here as much as possible. The creme brûlée is the best. I’ve also had Key Lime Pie, Cherry Blossom and Nutella. All amazing!
I don't even like OldBay seasoning much, but the Old Bay chicken sandwich was great.
Though I suppose that should've been obvious. Perfectly fried chicken sandwiched between two donuts is obviously gonna be good.
Recommend going earlier in the day. New flavors every month!
It's donuts. It's fried chicken. It's comfort food done in the right way by people who know what they're doing. Had a good day? Celebrate with fried chicken and donuts. Got fired? Make yourself feel better with fried chicken and donuts. Accidentally became the most wanted man in America while visiting our nation's capitol? Lay low, order some fried chicken and donuts, and wait for it to blow over. It's the perfect restaurant.
An unlikely pairing of soul food wrapped up into one neat business. Donuts taste fresh out of the frier, even at the end of the day. All other meals made fresh, not simply warmed up.
Customer service: OUTSTANDING. I was planning to pick up an order at 10 am on a Saturday, but didn't feel safe driving there that morning given the icy winter weather. I called after my scheduled pick up time and asked if I could push my order to the following day. Other than donuts, one of my items was a chicken sandwich. I offered to pay for that and let one of the employees have it as a meal. Yu, the staff member I talked with on the phone, reassured me that this happens often and there was no need to pay for the chicken sandwich, I could pick up food the next day. Clearly, one of the values of this company is that food is fresh; Yu asked what time I would be in, confirmed that time the following morning, and had a hot (not warm!) chicken sandwich on a biscuit ready for me when I arrived.
Yu, Astro, thank you for going above and beyond to make my dining experience great and giving me food that had exactly the taste and quality that I was craving!
The donuts are good, creative. But I don't care about the donuts. The fried chicken here is the best fried chicken I've ever had! I don't even want to write this because this place is packed enough from people waiting outside for donuts. If they knew how good that chicken is, I would never get my chicken cravings from here satisfied. Actually you know what, the fried chicken sucks. It's overhyped if anything. The donuts aren't anything special either. Avoid this place at all costs. I'll keep swinging by to check things out though and let you know if they improve. You're welcome.
Doughnuts were good, but I'm not particularly a sweets person and all of the flavors were thick on sugar. The fried chicken was amazing when it was fresh, but don't try to take it any further than the chairs outside or the breading gets soggy.
Good, original doughnuts. The PB&J tasted just like a sandwich. My buddies liked the chicken.
For the price and the recommendations, I was expecting much better quality. It was a little above average for both the chicken and donuts. Most of the donuts were pretty good, but the chocolate covered cherry was especially not so great. Maybe a bad day because of the holiday and excess of annoying tourists (including my family) but I still wasn’t super impressed. Maybe next time
Love this place...love the BLT Chicken sandwich, out of this world!
Creme brulee doughnut is to die for.
And the chicken is amazing too.
I know this company has "fried chicken" in its name but my mind only see doughnuts when when I think of it! So I saw the truck today and thought, ok there's the doughnut one, but then somehow the chicken part of the name caught my eye and I decided check out the menu.
I was pretty sure I didn't want the fried chicken sandwich on doughnuts that I had heard about but they had a version on a "bun" with Old Bay and Sriracha... That's right up my alley, but it was kind of expensive at $9.90. I ordered it anyway and I'm so glad I did! I don't always get sandwiches with lettuce and tomato but I recommend it for this one as the doughnut bun and chicken are pretty rich.
The chicken was really good. Crisp and juicy. And the bun was light and slightly sweet. I don't know how many calories were involved in this sandwich but it was delicious. Worthy of the high price tag. Next time I'll probably try the chicken tenders and a doughnut.
I also visited the store downtown for Nationals baby shark doughnuts and they were adorable and tasty!
Chicken sandwich is delicious and donuts are very tasty. Highly recommended for a quick and tasty bite.
One of the best breakfast/lunch places ever. They have gourmet doughnuts and a sandwiches that are a play off of chicken and waffles. It's a fried chicken breast on an unglazed doughnut. Get it with honey butter and hot sauce (not that hot). The combo of salty, sweet, and a little spicy is perfection. One of my top places in the DC area.
I work a few doors down from Astro, and myself and my coworkers go there several times a week. The chicken fingers are always hot and delicious. And they can be reheated later if necessary. The tater tots are yummy as well, but if they cool down, they lose their crunch and the flavor diminishes. The Sriracha mayo dip is amazing. I'm not a big donut fan, but I have tried a few and they have all been delicious. Especially the vanilla bean and carrot cake - they are always scrumptious! The chicken breakfast sandwich is also a favorite - but you have to get it on a donut rather than a cheddar biscuit. I would have to say this place is very small, but they certainly make the best of the limited space afforded to them. They utilize the kitchen space of the bar next door, Mackey's (formerly The Laughing Man). And the food is delivered by a dumb waiter, not something you see everyday.
The fried chicken sandwich is on point! Everything looked delicious and was hard to pass up. The coffee was pretty terrible-I wouldn't recommend it.
The set up of the joint is awkward. The food is brought over from another location. When they run out of something you have to wait for it to be brought over to the storefront. The employees seem a bit scatterbrained. They had to be told when the coffee ran out and didn't bother to clean the coffee area which was turning into a mess. The employees are all very kind and corrected any issues with a smile on their faces.
I will definitely return back here when I'm in the mood for some delicious doughnuts on my cheat day.
Good donuts. Good donuts and biscuit sandwhiches , but..overall..not great. Not by a longshot.
Got 1 savory & 1 old bay everything donut chicken sandwich, chicken tender meal, 2 piece chicken meal, mango passion fruit, mable bacon, and velvet donuts. All of the food was good. Not exceptional, but good. Seasoned chicken pretty good, and donuts were flavorful as well. Super Overpriced for the teeny sandwiches and amount of food imo. No one was excited about their meals, nor expressed any real want to return. My party who ordered those were basically done with their meals before I finished going to wash my hands. Chicken came out in a bag with nothing (no box, no cover, etc). They don't do their chicken on their donuts - only those listed above! Boo.. Total more than $60 for our "snack" / we went out to eat an hour later. $3.50 each for a donut & almost $10 portion of a meal (no sides), (size of popeyes buscuit) it should be much better than the .70 from krispie kreme and 9.99 8 piece from popeyes. I'll stick with KK & popeyes. Maybe crown chicken or royal farms, even KFC 🍗 is what theirs is most similar to. Even without the price difference considered, Id enjoy KK donuts just as the much if not more than ones i had here though great flavor profile. Their donuts are in middle of cakiness between duck donuts and KK imo so thats a plus. Oh the lemonade made from a half a bottle of poor quality concentrate is terrible. Overall if already right there i would say give it a try just for a bit of gluttony goodness, but i wouldnt make a trip of it or go out of my way for it.
Really really good fried chicken! We tried to order doughnuts too, but I guess you have to pick them up early not just order via the site for a later pick up. Hopefully we'll be able to try them soon
At the top of my list for favorite donuts. Right up there with Sidecar in California.
At a friend's enthusiastic recommendation I came by. As noted very small shop, only seating is 4 tables for 2 on the sidewalk outside. But the fried chicken breakfast sandwich on a savory donut was excellent. They had 8 kinds of doughnuts (apparently the selection rotates regularly). My creme brulee doughnut was excellent.
Pretty tasty, but not what I expected based on the photos. Definitely order from the beer hall side rather than the doughnut side for better looking food.
Always a great experience. Hot, fresh, extremely well seasoned chicken. Perfectly sweet and savory donuts. My only complaint is I wish they stayed open later
Tucked away in busy downtown DC; this tiny shop is a true tribute to bacon, friedchicken, donut nirvana.
Visited DC June 2017. Family just had to try this place. Donuts were great and the chicken was amazing. Only downside is they run out of chicken items quickly. Oh and also there isn't alot of seating which is tough to deal with when you are from out of town.
A Donut Lovers paradise!! You'll love the vast types of Donuts. Its much better then Dunken Donuts and the Donuts are super yummy!! Please take it from me. If you, your little one, or lover has a sweet tooth. Take them here and they'll be super satisfied. I'm going back really soon to get some more Maple Bacon donuts. Here me out, it sounds odd but they taste so good. A smokeness from the bacon and sweetness from the maple glazed makes it a great combination. It's a delightfully divine porky goodness. Please come and you'll wont regret (^__^)
The fried chicken was really good. You can get it in a donut or in a biscuit. This is not a sit down place.
Ordered 2 sandwiches, astro and old bay. Both were reaaally amazing and the prices were reasonable. Also ordered half dozen donuts and they were good too! Service was fast and they also follow strict covid protocols which keeps everyone safe.
Would definitely recommend to everyone visiting DC!
Look people, this location IS the size a closet - if you go at the wrong time you're waiting a while. BUT the donuts are amazing. The only problem is deciding what flavor to get. As for the chicken it's good stuff and modestly priced given the location. Get a 2 piece dark chicken for $6.85 in downtown DC? Where the @$% else are you going to find that? McDonalds, sure but McCrapo's ain't touchin' the quality you're getting at Astro. Just remember to ask for the honey mustard to go with it and you're set.
Tiny spot with incredible doughnuts! The lemon poppy seed is the perfect combination of sweet and tart while the maple bacon is the perfect balance of salt and sweet. They're all great! The chicken is good but the doughnuts are the stars of the show.
It's definitely worth a short detour!
Ignore the people who claim these are just ordinary doughnuts. The Creme Brulee are especially supreme. What I love best about them is that they are not overly sweet and the ingredients taste superior. The staff was very pleasant and courteous as well! We also loved the chicken!
Really yummy chicken tenders and donuts. They ran out of fried chicken, I got the last half order of chicken fingers. They could have discounted the price but didn't. I got a cheese biscuit too which was delish. They can't serve tap water because it's unfiltered, they told me. Seating is limited to 4 small tables outside with 2 chairs each.
Didn’t realize this place was a chain (?) cause the donuts were delicious, fresh, and creative. And perfectly paired with the fried chicken. Wasn’t super impressed with the service or location, but definitely worth ducking in if you’re in the mood for a sweet & salty way to start your morning.
CREME BRULEE MEEEEE
We missed the breakfast mark for 11:30 a.m. so I couldn't try the hot honey chicken biscuit.... but we tried a little bit of everything else.
Donuts - $3.5
Creme Brulee
This is my top donut of all time. It's not overly sweet like most donuts I've tried and the perfect ratio of fluff and cakey. Nicely coated sugar glass on top with the one of the most amazing cream fillings.
Peanut Butter, Cake Batter, Maple Bacon, Vanilla - $2.5 - $3.5
Depending on what you like, these are taste pretty amazing. Considering I don't like super sweet rich desserts, these were PERFECT for me!
Fried Chicken - $14 (4 pieces)
Oh my juicy... I'd have to say these are one of the most moist fried chicken I've had in awhile. It's not as crispy on the exterior but that could be because we took it to-go. It was a tad salty for me, but some may like that. And, it's a bit pricey for these few pieces... but I'd say it's worth it!
I can't want to try their hot honey biscuit...
Just okay for me. I went during an off peak time, so maybe that was part of the problem, but the chicken was only moderately warm, and the skin was not super crunchy. Then donut bun is an interesting gimmick, but you don't really notice it when you are eating. The sriracha buffalo sauce was quite tasty, however.
I went to Friday evening arriving at about 6:10PM. The restaurant was NOT busy. There was a sign to 'seat yourself'. I chose a table that was easily visible but it took at least 10 minutes before waitstaff came to my table and gave me a menu. Another 9 minutes passed before someone came back to take my order. I was just about to get up and leave. I ordered a two piece fried chicken meal with tater tots and a glass of Moscato.
You can tell by the name that this is a very casual place. There is a separate carry-out area, a bar, regular restaurant seating and a lower level ? serving area. There may have been five people at the bar. The restaurant was clean but I did not check the restroom.
My food arrived in about five minutes after ordering. There was a breast and a wing. It appeared to be pan-fried (my preference) but it was hard to tell. It was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside but needed a bit more seasoning. Unfortunately there was no salt and pepper on the table and did not ask because the food would probably have been cold by the time those arrived. The tater tots were good and adequately crispy on the outside and tender inside. They also needed a little salt. The wine was properly chilled like most people like white wines. Pricing was reasonable considering that this was downtown Washington DC.
I would consider eating there again especially since I did not get a donut.
This place was incredible. A variety of fresh donuts that all looked good. We tried a couple (maple bacon and cherry festival) and a fried chicken on a savory bagel sandwich. It's very small. There's only a few chairs outside but we stayed there to eat. I would definitely get food from here again.
This place is amazing!
Cons: no inside seating, only a couple tables outside of restaurant on sidewalk.
Everything else was good! Fried chicken was seasoned and cooked right! The biscuits taste like Popeyes' and Red Lobster's biscuits had a baby. YUMMMMMMMM!!!!! They are large as well so dont allow the $3 (or whatever price was, to turn you off).
I didnt try the doughnuts, but friends said they were great too. I have no reason to doubt it. Wish I'd taken pics. I didnt. Visit this spot if you get a chance!
If the passion fruit donut is on the menu, get it. That was one of the best donuts I've ever had. The donuts themselves are more cake-y and not greasy, which is a plus for me. If you like the same consistency, check out their standard offerings as well as the new creations that they constantly surprise us with.
After visiting their food truck multiple times, I had to try the store when I happened to be in the area for lunch. I ordered the chicken fingers and tater tots - both were barely warm (that's being generous, most people would probably have said the food was cold). Really disappointing. It didn't look like they had a full kitchen so I guess I can't be surprised. Staff was really friendly, the space gets crowded quick if there's more than a few people in line or waiting for food. If you want the best fried chicken this place has to offer, I recommend you seek out their food truck and skip this location.
Creme Brulee doughnut was still out of this world - so if you're going for doughnuts and skipping the chicken you won't be disappointed.
Convenient spot for great chicken and excellent donuts. If you're coming from out of town be sure to look up the seasonal offerings before you go, some are more exciting than others. Big fan of the wings and the French toast donut, when it's available.
Absolutely the best fried chicken I've ever had in my life! I couldn't believe a breast piece of white meat could be juicy and tasty. The donuts were good too. Would love to stop by again.
Amazing donuts. It is strange to have a fried chicken and donut sandwich.....but it really works. Highly recommend this place. Only issue is lack of seating. This is like a pop up store. There is limited room inside to order and only 4 tables with 8 chairs outside. No indoor seating. Do not let this stop you from coming here.
Fried chicken biscuit was heart cloggingly delicious. The smores donut was quite good but quite in the "among best ever" category. Overall it is a tad overpriced, which is why it gets 4 stars instead of 5. I will say my friends bill was 10.08, when he was digging around in his wallet for a coin to go with his 10 dollar bill the cashier said, "Dont worry about it, the bill is enough." I was very impressed with that.
They sell the best chicken tenders and doughnuts in the city. They always have great flavors. My favorite is the Maple Bacon doughnut. Chicken fingers are delicious. Get there early. Its a popular place and you don't want to miss out.
This place is awesome. A hole in the wall. I've always been a fan of Krispy Kreme, but this takes the cake. I came here on a windy cold Saturday morning. Theres only seating outside, but even with the cold temps and limited seating we enjoyed our meal. We ordered the Maple Bacon, Cherry Blossom, Chocolate Espresso, chicken tenders and 2 pieces of their fried chicken. The donuts here have a nice soft texture, bacon fried with a crunch, rich icing and espresso flavor. Each one had a distinct unique taste. The fried chicken is at another level. You can taste the buttermilk and the meat itself was smoking as we tore pieces off. Chicken did not taste greasy and I was eating every piece into the bone. The sauces were great with our chicken. Try their honey mustard and ketchup. Only complaint is theres no seat indoors, parking can be difficult in the city and price for a donut and chicken can get close to $8. I'll definitely be back to try there other flavors.
I have only had the doughnuts here but they're amazing... mmm! The place is small, not a place where you can sit and eat. Their specialty flavors for December are chocolate peppermint, gingerbread pear, and egg nog. I like to heat up the doughnuts in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.
Was pretty busy in the morning, but definitely worth it. Donuts are AMAZING, had the creme brulee and wanted like five more. Chicken sandwiches are also fantastic. Wish I had eaten here every morning!
I was surprised about the size of the restaurant. This little facility has enough space for 6-8 people to stand comfortably. The doughnuts were amazing. I love the different flavors and the creativity that is involved in the doughnuts. I had the Old Bay chicken sandwich. The chicken breast was nicely fried and the doughnut bread was the perfect addition to the sandwich. The glazed doughnuts are very sweet and melt in your mouth. Seating is outside, none inside.
What a surprise!!! They had me at chicken and donuts! I ordered a 2 piece and 3 donuts (maple bacon, PB&J, creme brulee)...I just had to taste them all!! We also ordered about 8 chicken sandwiches some with bacon.
Service: Excellent
Timeliness: Small line but moved fast
Food: Chicken was amazing, pb&j my favorite the others were delicious
Now i didnt have the sandwich myself but I am looking forward to my next visit. the buns are donuts! and based on the chicken I had and the fact that there is also bacon...well enough said. I wish we had one in Texas.
Interesting take on doughnuts. Very tasty. Chicken sandwich could use some veggies in my opinion, but also tastes good.
Yum! Great doughnuts! Great fried chicken! Had a large online order, but I showed up an hour late to pick up. They were still very accommodating despite me coming in the middle of lunch rush!
This was recommended to my by a co-worker. I tried their breakfast sandwich that was fried chicken stuffed in a halved lightly glazed doughnut. At first I was skeptical because I've had doughnut burgers and sandwiches at other joints which ten to be overly sweet. This sandwich here, however, was surprisingly balanced. I wished they had served more coffee options like a pour over or some espresso drinks, but having some coffee (self served La Colombe) is better than no coffee.
I ordered a dozen maple bacon to bring into the office and it was a hit. Everyone loved it. I was able to get a bite and it was delicious. I wish I'd have a chance to stay longer and come back to try the other options they offer. This is a spot I'd definitely recommend checking out.
Note: Do allow for some wait time if you are here for the sandwich in the morning. They usually have a queue waiting on the fried chicken to be prepped.
Pro(s):
- Balanced flavor in the breakfast sandwich, not overly sweet
- Delicious Maple Bacon doughnuts
Con(s):
- limited drink options
- wait time during the morning rush
If it went from food truck to brick and mortar with multiple locations, you know they did something right.
Walk up ordering with a few tables outside. Close enough to the Washington mall to take some food to go and enjoy a bite while taking in the sites.
Had the maple bacon donut, was very good but not as unique as some of the other offerings. The fried chicken sandwhich is excellent, gotta make sure to take them up on the honey butter and hot sauce (isn't too spicy). Biscuit is a good choice if you don't want the donut on donut action.
Only thing that could be better is being able to choose a custom donut instead of the standard glazed for fried chicken sandwhich.
One of the best places in town. Fried chicken club on old bay donut was insanely good. The tots were too good for sauce. Local brews, awesome donuts. The name says it all, just go!
Unique and good donuts! Brought a box to the office and everyone loved them.
Best donuts ever! Especially the creme brulee donut with the glazed crunchy stuff on top! Yum!
Small doughnut & fried chicken shop a few blocks from the White House. Went here multiple mornings while visiting DC. The doughnuts are great, some of my favorites were the maple bacon, PB&J, an creme brulee. The fried chicken sandwich (on the doughnut bun w/ honey butter) is tasty, although a bit small for the price. The interior space is limited (essentially a counter), but they have seating outside for about 8 people comfortably (2 chairs x 4 tables) if I recall correctly.. The staff here were very friendly, so I'd say the service was quite good overall. Their drink selection is limited (no juice), but the iced coffee was decent.
We thought the Bourbon Pecan doughnut was great, but the creme brulee was ok, and the Pumpkin Pie was alright. I cannot speak on the fried chicken. This was a busy little shop, I don't think I would go out of my way to come here.
Great donuts and 1st time eating Fried chicken on a donut sandwich, woah, really, really really enjoyed it. Had/shared creme brulee, peach cobbler and baklava donuts. Favorite was creme brulee. Walked 11 miles to burn it off!! :-) loved it. Comparable to Blue Star donuts in Venice, CA!
We were meeting some friends in downtown DC who suggested Astro for a quick breakfast; it turned out to be a great decision. Astro is, quite literally, a hole in the wall. There’s no room for indoor seating, and a line out the door only takes about a half-dozen people.
We were waiting when the doors opened at 9 am, so we were the first group to order our food. By the time we picked up our order and sat down, the line was out to the sidewalk. People love this place, and for good reason.
Everyone in our group ordered the same item: The Fried Chicken breakfast sandwich. The three bread options (Savory Doughnut, House Bun, and Cheddar Biscuit) all sounded great, but as soon as I saw the cheddar biscuit on the counter, it was no contest. Paired with the Sriracha Buffalo sauce (available among 4 other flavors), it was one of the best chicken biscuits I’ve tasted.
The chicken had a satisfying crunch with a tender middle, while the cheddar biscuit balanced the crunch of the chicken and the spicy kick of the sriracha buffalo. And at less than $6, you can (and should) come back and try every combination of bread and sauce.
For those that are traveling to the DC area, it should be noted that Astro is only a couple of blocks from the White House, and there is plenty of parking nearby, albeit at a “DC premium”. In other words, it’s a great place to start your day in the District. And since it’s next door to Mackey’s Pub, perhaps a great place to end it, as well.
I went this weekend with family. We saw Astro on a map and knew we had to come here while on a day trip to DC. Fortunately, we were not disappointed. That was the crispness, juiciest, well-seasoned chicken we've ever had! The vanilla bean donut wasn't as good as I had hoped, but the chicken certainly made up for it.
Absolutely heaven in your mouth.this place is awesome!!
The creme brulee doughnut was fabulous! Like no other doughnut I've had! The chicken biscuit and cherry blossom doughnut were also amazing. It was chilly so we got our order and walked around the corner to Starbucks and got coffee and sat down to enjoy! Definitely check it out.
Great food and service in person but when we ordered via delivery app, we received a different donut than what we ordered because original choice was sold out. Please call and ask for our next choice or offer a refund instead of choosing for us.
Spectacular chicken and donuts! New donut styles all the time and good beverage options as well. Be sure to check their hours before visiting and beware that they may run out of chicken and donut flavors as the day goes on.
Would of gave 4.5 if I could. I Got the maple bacon donut, very delicious. The perfect amount of glaze. Could of warmed it up just a little before serving though.
You want donuts in DC... Go here. Although the chicken was decent I wouldn't make it a point to go here specifically for the fried chicken. The donuts are tasty and well prepared. Multiple options each day will keep you coming back... And probably aid in your eventual heart attack.
Incredibly small store but very fast service. I love the fact that the donuts are displayed and labeled. What was disappointing was the temperature of the food. FLAT OUT COLD.!!!! I was expecting room temp at least. So that made the experience lack luster.
Definitely enjoy coming here every time I come to town! My bff and her boyfriend cane with me... normally it’s just me and her but... anyway... I was very pleased with the doughnut chicken sandwich. I love how they always change and have new doughnuts to try. The coffee is decent but we decided togo to Pete’s down the street
I was not aware of Astro Doughnuts until my friend introduced them to me. First, the food. I had a French toast doughnut (a special they had), which was not only beautiful (see pic), it was fregin' delicious. It was exactly halfway between a doughnut and a piece of French toast. I also tried my friend's Chocolate Banana Daiquiri donut, which was delightful. I also had a chicken biscuit. The fried chicken filet was perfectly spiced and moist. And the biscuit was spot on.
In addition, despite a small crowd, we were served quick, and the staff were super friendly and helpful!
Amazing doughnuts! Stopped 2 days in a row.
I'd been meaning to stop by for years and finally got the chance last week. The Korean wings are properly fried up and very well balanced. Juicy, not over-sauced, and battered for just enough crunch without being heavy/greasy.
Unfortunately no Creme Brule donuts available, but the Mango Mojito was extremely well made (dense, a touch creamy, just chewy, yeast style donut [airy] with just the right amount of flavor from the icing). Unlike a lot of donut shops, they didn't over-sweeten the glaze, which means it complemented the wings perfectly.
Shared both with several folks when I got back home and they also found them fantastic.
The donuts are pretty good and I would definitely go back for more. The chicken is decent, but not amazing. I was expecting it to be more like Popeye's, but it is decent. Go for the donuts. I will go again when the location in Falls Church opens.
Three decadent donuts here. Creme B, Peanut butter j, Chocolate holiday.
Got a chicken sandwich and it was just OK - the bun came from the neighboring store and was cold while the chicken was warm so that was a bit unusual. Probably will try again in the future, post-pandemic but I can't say the sandwich warranted its $11 tag.
This a try once kinda place. The maple bacon donut was basic but good. I would try the orange Creamsicle next.
I gotta give it them.. they have to deal with the most bratty, naive & just stupid kind of clients.
DC food scene is very bland compared to other major cities. So here , this is considered " cool" even though in NY the donut + chicken fad has passed.
Glazed, Blueberry, and Maple Bacon donuts were AMAZING! No hot coffee and the cold brew is only sold in cans.
I like the gimick of this place, donuts as buns! That's awesome! The chicken is really good too! But it's also just a walk up counter and not exactly a place you can eat. You are also paying for the gimick which is to be expected, but not like you are getting great value. Check it out for yourself, it's certainly fun to try!
I was actually here on Wednesday- couldn’t get google maps to recognize I was on site. I got the 4 piece fried chicken and it was excellent. Moist and flavourful. A must stop every time I see my eye doc.
So I was SUPER excited to come here this morning. I got here a bit before 7:30am and waited for the doors to open. I even told the lady working I was going to help their reviews on Yelp since they only have three stars, but unfortunately I won't be able to do that this time around (I'm hoping to give them another shot tomorrow). I ordered the creme brulee donut because of all the hype my friends have been giving me about it. The donut was GREAT the first bite or two, but unfortunately it wasn't cooked all the way through. Major let down. Hoping when I come back tomorrow the dones will be well done!
Ordered the chicken BLT on a biscuit and while the chicken was good the biscuit disintegrated after one bite, leaving me picking up random pieces of bun with every bite. The cherry blossom donut had also been sitting too long so the dough was damp from the cream cheese glaze, a horrible texture.
This is an experience you have to have at least once. And if you're like me and my fam, you're probably going to get hooked. It's not just the good fried chicken stuffed inside a savory donut like the Old Bay donut...it's also the scrumptious sauces they use that will have you nomming like a kid with no manners. The Korean BBQ and sriracha sauces were delicious. And they do old school Cokes out of the glass bottle. Nice touch.
This place is tiny, and all seating is outside...and very little seating at that. So plan accordingly. No bathrooms either.
If you love a good doughnut, this is the place for you! The chicken is also amazing! The place is really small but there is a few outdoor seats available. My favorite doughnut is the Maple-Bacon or the Crème brûlée! Definitely a place to visit!
Fried chicken biscuit hits the spot. Be sure to grab breakfast at this delicious little donut and fried chicken place. My favorite is with the fried egg. If there's a line, which there usually is, dont be discouraged. It's worth the wait.
This place is the devil! Lol the sandwiches are amazing i made this place my guilty pleasure every other Friday.
Never tried the chicken, but tried the doughnuts a few times. Didn't find them to be particularly flavorful. I honestly prefer Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donuts.
Good little place right near Metro Center and many federal offices to grab breakfast, lunch, or to fulfill your cravings for something sweet. Ordered the fried chicken sandwich with sriracha mayo and a PB&J donuts (or doughnut as they spell it). Was not overly impressed with the sandwich because the donut bun was lacking in flavor and the chicken itself was no better than you would expect to receive at a grocery store deli. The sriracha mayo was amazing, even though it made the sandwich hard to consume. The real star of my visit was the peanut butter and jelly doughnut. It was filled with flavor and provided a good balance between the peanut butter and jelly so that neither overwhelmed the other. I will surely go back to try even more donuts but am not sure that I will visit again for lunch.
P.S. Very limited seating, so make sure 6ou grab a table if one is empty.
I was recommended the creme brulee donut and I was blown away how good it was. The donut actually had the elements of a creme brulee; the caramelized sugar layer and the filling. Highly recommend it.
WOW... simply amazing! My buddy and I ordered the Old Bay Chicken sandwich, and it was awesome! The chicken breast was seasoned to perfection, and we won't even get into how juicy the chicken breast was. Smh...I savored every bite! The old bay seasoning was lightly brushed over the doughnut bun, in addition to the chicken. Oddly enough though, the "doughnut" bun wasn't overwhelming sweet like an actual glazed doughnut. The doughnut was very light. Overall a perfect combination of flavors and textures!
Personally not my kind of doughnut. If you are looking for something sweet like a cake doughnut or a Krispy Kreme style yeast doughnut, this is not the place to go to. Doughnut are made out of bread, I've never seen that before and I will definitely not come here for bread shaped like a donut with glaze on top and spend $3.50 on one. If you want the doughnuts here just take a piece of sour dough bread and put glaze on it. It seems that the baker doesn't like his job or care about the shop and customers. The reason why I know this is because an employee said to the other employees "yeah he said that this is it, he will not make anymore today". I would compare the chicken to Popeyes chicken with a little bit of a different coating, so it's moist, greasy chicken. Remember that the 'chicken doughnut' is not on glazed "doughnut", just a plain piece of some sort of white bread shaped like a doughnut.
Hands down best donut shop in DC. Get the creme brulee, earlier the better. Also have nice fried chicken sandwiches. Be warned place is tiny and only has a few tables outside.
Very cozy spot. The peanut butter and jelly donut was my personal favorite. The doughnut has peanuts on top with jelly filling in the inside. Service was quick with a friendly staff.
From the brown bag emerged a lightly crisped ‘bun’ with the sweetness of a glazed Doughnut, but fluffy like Cotton Candy. The Fried Chicken wasn’t too greasy and contained a subtle flavor. Get the hot sauce to add a new dimension – and it works!
This is a very tiny place and the only seating are a few tables outside. With a line nine-deep there was only one person taking orders, assembling Sandwiches AND taking payments. Another staff briefly appeared then left. The girl working giggled how her walkie-talkie into the kitchen was broken AND she had no idea whether they used Peanut oil in cooking (customer in front of me asked).
Working here was fun as you get to meet a lot of people. The donuts are homemade & fresh which makes them taste AH-MAZING. The chicken is also made hourly keeping it juicy.
The chicken was delicious! Moist on the inside, crispy on the outside and savory. We had chicken fingers and a chicken sandwich which was served on an old bay seasoned donut with siracha mayo, lettuce, and tomato. I couldn't stop eating long enough to photo... it was that good. ☺ the reason it didn't get a full 5 stars from us was two fold (and we are being super critical) is that there is no inside seating, not necessarily a bad thing, but fare this good should be savored. It was raining during our visit and the 4 outside tables were occupied so savoring waz not an option, neither was hiking a mile back to the hotel. If you're not concerned with inside dining or it's a beautiful day and you can find a park bench, consider this a 4.9 review. The other .1 was taken off because they don't serve tap water only bottles at a premuum. Not a big deal overall but worth mentioning. Maybe they can add a filter at some point to get past the regulation. Decinitely worth a visit ... in addition to the chicken, we shared a maple bacon donut and a PB&J donut. Insanely good on both counts. They were light, fluffy, and definitely lived up to their intended flavor profiles. Will visit again, probably on a non rainy day!
The "Old Bay All Day" was fantastic! It was the first time we've ever tried a donut sandwich of any kind and we were pleasantly surprised. We were here late in the day, it might be better earlier in the day, but it didn't disappoint. We also bought a creme brulee donut, all I can say about it is "ehh..." It wasn't the best donut we've ever had.
Ordered the Créme Brûlée donut and ended up waiting an extra 10 minutes because of a rush behind me. The server gave me an extra donut of my choice, I chose the Apricot Lavender, for waiting so long just for a donut. They were both delicious and I highly recommend those flavors!
Creme Brulé doughnut was damn good and the chicken was good too. Only thing I could say against them was that the chicken was was a bit too salty. It's probably like that to eat with a doughnut which I did not, I ate them separately. Give them a try you won't be disappointed.
Myself and two co-workers heard the hub bub on ADFC so we thought what better day to celebrate than Natonal Doughnut Day then here. I had the Boston Creme and two piece white. Co-worker had the Maple Bacon (she LOVED it). The chicken was very moist but in our opinion lacked just a little bit of spices. Overall great experience.
The ADFC Staff were very friendly and professional!!!!!!! The only drawback for this place is the ability to sit and enjoy there at the shop itself. Very small with only two tables. As long as you take your food somewhere you will enjoy it or if you luck out and get one of the two tables.
Deflinitely worth the visit!!!!!
The greatest donuts and sandwiches anywhere! Highly recommend the chicken BLT with savory buns and sriracha mayo. Wish they had a location in Virginia Beach!
I had a pretty good maple bacon donut and the very best fried chicken on the magical food stuff that they call a Savory donut. Anybody who loves fried chicken and donuts needs to come here and put something good in your belly.
We originally went for the fried chicken and doughnuts but it is literally a hole in the wall, there was a long wait and the staff was very overwhelmed (waiting on refills from the kitchen of coffee, doughnuts, chicken, refills of milk for the coffee bar). We only got 2 specialty doughnuts so we didn't to wait (creme brulee and maple bacon).
The chicken and biscuit was delicious. Chicken was moist, biscuit was flaky and the Buffalo sauce was a bonus. Donuts we're good, if not a little too sweet for me
Delicious! I had the asteroid chicken sandwich with coleslaw on it. I'm not even a cole slaw fan but it was good. Every ingredient is flavorful and complements each other
Good Sandwich but a little small for the price.
It was pretty ok. Luke warm chicken blanketed in a luke warm donut bun. Good taste but mediocre in every other way. Come here if you wanna feel cool and hip but not if you're really hungry and are looking for a fantastic meal.
I stumbled across this place in VA and decided to go in. Best decision I made the whole day.
I am from the South and I know what Real Fried Chicken is suppose to tast like.
This chicken is the Real Deal. To top it off we had a Cream Brûlée doughnut . My mood was altered after consuming their food.
I will be back. U have a friend in me.
I will start with saying the food is awesome.
Love the food but 4 out of 4 times they havent had things ready at lunch time. Either fingers arent ready, or the buns for lunch sandwiches, or wings, or all of the above. Not even busy either for 2 of these times, just... unprepared, and you then have to wait 15+ minutes.
Would be ez 5 stars if they just got better with prep. Definitely check the place out, but for anything besides one of their donuts, be prepared for a wait... always
If you are looking for the very best donuts of Washington, DC, then this is the place for you. There are really very few competitors to this place, the quality is just too good. The Donuts are more expensive than your standard Krispy Kreme or Dunkin, but Astro absolutely makes up for it with higher quality, better taste, and more creative entries into the donut space. While some donut places fashion products that are much closer to small cakes, Astro sticks by the concept of Donuts and nails the consistency of what a donut should taste like.
Don't be discouraged by the line out the door. It moves quickly and proves that there's a reason why you're there too. I prefer the tenders and tots. We often bring an assortment of doughnuts into the office for bdays. Everyone perks up when an Astro box walks in. The portion sizes are perfect and it's all delicious.
A must visit before/after the White House! Only a few blocks away from WH. Southern comfort food: fried chicken & doughnuts! Unique 🍩 creations and seasonal specials. Don't worry. Eat some fried chicken and wash it down with a doughnut or two then walk the Mall and burn off the calories. This place is a treat. Come early. They sell out sometimes before the end of the day. Excellent 👍
We loved the fried chicken fingers and the 3 doughnuts (creme brulee, banana salted cashew, and passion fruit coconut). We will definitely go back to try other doughnut flavor of the day. One star off for hard to find parking.
I had chicken tenders, a Coke with real sugar, and two donuts - Hibiscus Lemon and Creme Brulee. Amazing food! Best donuts I've ever had in my life, awesome chicken tenders!
Wow!!!! We had the crème brûlée doughnut, the vanilla Bean doughnut, salted Carmel donut, and the piece of resistance the Cherry Blossom doughnut! Absolutely, hands-down the very best donuts we have ever ate in our lives! Happy happy happy! We plan on going back for chicken tomorrow after lunch!
These doughnuts are to die for. I had the passionfruit berry one. Flavors are so good. The dough is high quality. They are also pretty big so it's a good value for your money if you like fancy doughnuts. I want to come back and try all of them.
Awesome specialty donuts. Creme Brulee and Boston Creme Pie were the bomb. Nutella did not taste like Nutella; recommend filling with Nutella. Was a little disappointed that chicken sandwich was on a sweet roll and not a donut like pictured here.
Fast and friendly service with delicious food. S’more donut is bomb!
This place was fantastic. A little hole in the wall that delivers amazing donuts and amazing chicken. We got the dark meat with the creme brulee and maple bacon donuts. Chicken was juicy and donuts were perfect.
Got the BLT with honey mustard and was there in time to grab some doughnuts. A guy even gave some from his box outside in a non- sketchy way.. guess he had to many and there was a cream brulee in there for the Bday girl I was with.. so basically the place brings nice people as well as hires them because the two ladies who helped me were great.
Good donuts but the larger lady who seems to be the manager needs more training. I've been there a few times and she's either on the phone or just being far too loud for such a small place. Shame because I really love the donuts.
The doughnuts are amazing. Go there and get a dozen, say they are for your coworkers if you embarrassed, but then enjoy all the delicious flavors for yourself. Treat yourself, they are worth it.
Good donuts -- flavors sell out fast so go early! I try to go to a local donut shop in every city I visit. This one is good but please note it is super tiny with no indoor seating.
I got the crème brûlée. This doughnut is all about the texture, with a flavor that's not overpowering. The combination of the creme filling, the soft dough, and the crisp glaze distinguishes this doughnut from anything else I've ever tried. I can't wait to go back and try another variety.
Great selection of donuts and close to lots of sightseeing! Have breakfast at the White House ;)
Very good doughnuts. They are large, fresh, and very flavorful. The shop is very small and only good to order and pick up. Recommend stopping in for a quick doughnut or 2.
The BEST doughnuts I've ever had. Their chicken beats Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pop Eyes. I only wish this was a restaurant instead of just a take out place.
They have a great donut chicken breakfast sandwich, but be aware that they do sell out. The line is also oftentimes long, and the price is a bit expensive for what you get, typical of trendy DC spots.
I DID enjoy it, but i don't think they did anything different. There is a great donut sandhwich place in Austin that crushes this concept in a delicious manner. The Creme brulee donut ia tasty..but again, I couldnt find anythint special bout these donuts or sandwhiches.
Great food, got fried chicken sandwiches, tater tots and a wonderful creme brulee donut. The store front is kinda small with very limited seating. But still a great experience.
Devine. Very fresh. We devoured the cinnamon glazed and couldn't resist the maple bacon. Both were so good that my husband wanted to go back for more. The bacon on doughnut is amazing.
Pretty good but the donuts are overpriced at $4 each. And they’re not huge. The chicken biscuit sandwich is their best item.
Found this shop while touring DC and my husband and I both got the fried chicken breakfast sandwich. It was was delicious and filled us up for hours. Would definitely recommend to others!
I was walking through DC I saw the dig for Astros and was immediately drawn in by the "fried chicken and doughnuts" on the awning. I went and checked it out, stood on line and the person in front of me got the last doughnut. Needless to say I was bummed. Anyways I ended up walking by a bit later and they had replenished their doughnut stock! So yes, I did stop for fried chicken tenders and a Maple Bacon Doughnut. Both were amazing. I am so glad I checked back otherwise I would have missed this amazing place!
OMG I love this place. I told my sis about this place, she lives in Towson, MD. I told her that we have to come here for breakfast before hitting the museums. I live in CA and was pleasantly surprise that they have one in DC. Fried chicken and donuts for breakfast what more can you ask for!?!
Good food, good atmosphere, messed up order a bit but made up for it. Overall worth it, their chicken was really flavorful & definitely have a donut from them.
Fried Chicken Cobb Salad....so good!
I give it four stars because of the quality service and location. The prices are fair due to the location. There's no seating inside and expect to stay in line outside because this location is pretty small. This is a great place for quick bite to eat.
Great ingredients, I'm sure, but left something to be desired. I got a peanut butter chocolate pretzel donut (chocolate cake donut and peanut butter glaze topped with pretzels) and a "cronut" which was a croissant/donut. The PB-chocolate had good chocolate cake but it felt apart really quickly - it was very cakey. The PB glaze was all saccharine, not enough PB flavor. The cronut was all over the place - it had raisins in it, a maple glaze, and filled with a vanilla custard of some kind. The actual dough didn't have a lot of flavor - it was a perfectly yeasty donut, but tasted like plain bread. The cronut would have been fine without the raisins or custard - they didn't do much for the flavor or texture. With a little more flavor to the bread part of the donut, it could have been perfect.
The chicken was nice, crispy, and tender. The biscuit was very moist and full of flavor. Their donuts are amazing!
The creme brûlée doughnut is a classic here but I've enjoyed everything else on the menu too. If you're early enough, get the cinnamon sugar minis. Seasonal doughnuts like banana nut and passion fruit are also great choices. If you're looking for lunch and your job won't mind you falling into a food coma when you get back get a doughnut sandwich. You'll enter another state of consciousness that may or may not feel like a psychedelic trip to heaven. The wings will also induce mouth explosions though not quiet as heavy as a fried chicken blt on doughnuts. I mean c'mon! Who else around town makes them with sriracha? You've been fairly warned.
So... this will not be pretty...
The doughnut dough taste as though there is no salt in it which is needed to counter balance the ridiculously sweet frosting that taste of nothing but sugar. The vanilla glaze had no flavor. Not even a hint of even imitation vanilla. The salted caramel tasted NOTHING of buttery caramel and there was no salt in the salted caramel. The maple bacon was overpowered by the maple glaze...I didn't know it was possible to overpower the flavor of bacon...but Astro managed it. The creme brulee had NO FLAVOR...it was not good at alll... I am not sure how it is possible for a creme bruleee, salted caramel, and maple bacon doughnut all have the same flat no taste. There was literally NO FLAVOR in any of the doughnuts. I am not sure how that was possible. Please work on nuancing your flavors.
However the chicken was delicious (hence the 3 stars).
This is the definition of a hidden gem. Quick bite to eat that blew my mind. Nicest cashier you'll ever meet. If you're wondering...the chicken is boneless. It's just fried crispy. You're welcome.
Awesome atmosphere great food, drinks, and service! But the bartender named Tre brings it all together making it one of the best bars downtown! BY FAR!!
This is one of my favorite places to take out-of-town people too. It is definitely a heavy breathing approved establishment. All the staff there are friendly and welcoming and very fast. Don't know what you want don't worry they'll point you in the right direction. Can't wait for the next time I'm there.
Even though it's a doughnut place I continuously come back for the sriracha wings. They are so good. So so so good. The doughnuts are pretty good as well especially the maple bacon but the chicken was great.
Very good donuts, nice place, good service, friendly, clean, park on the street. The best was the apple donut. You can eat the donuts also in the bar that is beside the donut location, they will deliver there.
Best fried chicken sandwich I’ve ever had. Period, sis!
This is the best chicken biscuit and the yummiest doughnuts. It's a small space, but the staff is friendly and they have a dairy free latte option!
Excellent doughnuts. You’ll def enjoy. New sure to have the Peanutbutter and Jelly. My only critique is how can they not sell milk?
Great atuff. All their food is 100% awesome. Super quality and right on with taste. I've never had a bad experience with anything they sell. If my arteries could handle it I would eat breakfast, lunch and dinner here.
Holy God above this food is good. Ohhhh yaaa, biscuit, fried chicken, hot sauce, and honey. Gawd it is so good. Donuts are good to but that chicken sandwich will change your life!
I've only ever had the food truck donuts & they are divine. For my daughter's first birthday we got donuts instead of a boring cake. It was a huge success!
Some of the best chicken that I have ever had! Pair that with a donut...and I was in heaven. Super quick, very friendly. A nice place to stop in DC!
This place is awesome!!! The food is great and so is the service. The cashier went above and beyond to help me on my lunch break and I wish I can remember her name but keep up the great work . They have a customer for life.
This place is expensive, but delicious. I once waited 30 minutes for my food, I had no where to be so it was worth the wait. Good stuff. Enjoy the sandwhiches on the biscuits and the old bay donuts.
