Reviews of Tall Grass Bakery
Small but excellent bakeshop. For my first visit, I had a Baker St. sourdough, which is great for both by itself or making sandwiches. I also tried the seeded rye, super solid and the inside doesn't feel dry even after a couple of days.
My only little complaint is that I got the sourdough and rye in one brown paper bag, which I didn't give any thought but after walking a little the sourdough poked a hole at the bottom of the bag and by then it's too late to go back. I managed to get them home safe and sound though.
A friend of mine from France whose opinion I value told me a few years back that their artisan baguettes are better than 75 percent of those you would find in France. That and the brioches are the only bread we ever eat. The staff and the service they offer are outstanding and straightforward. A while back they did not have ready a rather large order I had placed. It was a Sunday and I am a vendor at the Ballard Farmers Market a few blocks away. About an hour after the market had opened I saw the baker walking up the street with a big bag of baguettes under his arm, looking for me, just like he said he would do. Amazing! The bread was still hot out of the oven. I shared some of it with a few of my neighboring vendors who all agreed that it was indeed the best they had had.
Delicious! The cinnamon rolls and chocolate brioche are delicious. Highly recommend.
Wandered over here on a Sunday (apparently the only day they are open!) and wow were we lucky. We went with the classic cinnamon roll and were blown away - it was warm, and cinnamony, and the frosting was the perfect amount and not too sweet. HEAVEN. And it was less than $4. Cannot recommend enough.
Finally a worthy bakery. There's a reason for the constant line of waiting customers on the sidewalk. I bought five different breads and they are all great. That's no small feat. They even have white bread for you bread sissies.
Update: September 15, 2022. We tried to go back a couple of weeks ago on a Friday. Sign on the door said they were closed because it was too hot to work. This time we telephoned and the recording said they were open. Got there and another sign on the door said they decided to take a vacation; closed for two weeks. Great product but I've lost patience with this place. The only way to correct this behavior is a reduction in revenue, and we're going to do our part.
Had excellent sourdough breads, a rye sour and a walnut levain. Absolutely first rate.
Love everything that I have tried here. Their scones, pasties and other baked items are not overly sweet, which is what I like. They have a subtle yet great taste and texture.
Very high quality artisan bread! We went there after looking at high ratings and it did not disappoint. We will return next time we are in Seattle.
This is one of the best bread bakeries in Seattle. It is also next to Besalu, which has delicious pastries.
After trying over half a dozen bakeries in the Seattle area, I'm gonna make the call and say that Tall Grass Bakery has the best challah in Seattle. The sesame seed challah is my favorite. We get a loaf every Friday. One of the best things about getting a loaf from them is the way the car smells on the way home.
If you can't get the challah, they sometimes have knots that are the same bread in a different shape.
Being a small doorfront bakery in Ballard, this may be easy to miss, but do go and look for it if you love good artisan bread. The scones were delicious also with a not-too-sweet combination of either apple or coconut and ginger. Their bread products are European style with a hearty texture rather than being light and fluffy and the variety is adventurous and delightful.
My favorite bakery in Seattle to grab a baguette or cinnamon roll! The sourdough is great, too. You can’t walk by this place, smell the bread, and resist stopping and trying a loaf (or three!).
You can barely find a place with walnut bread or pecan bread in Seattle area. I really like the place.
Really phenomenal breads. I love their olive fougasse 👌 …
This is one of the best bakeries in west Seattle. We go there often to get bakes. They have sourdough, rye , whole wheat and many other options. There are savory and sweet bakes as well to indulge yourself. During pandemic you cannot step inside the store and have to pay from outside so kind of makes the reading of menu bit hard but the workers there are nice and helpful.
This bakery makes some of he best Baguettes I've had in my entire life. A life that's been full of many a baguette. I can also highly recommend their cinnamon rolls, which are truly divine. Absolutely a must stop for anyone, in, nearby, or even passing through the area.
Go here now to get ALL your bread and granola needs. Seriously.
I stopped by Cafe Besalu next door and some really lovely whiffs of carbs drifted through the air. I simply had no choice but to follow the smell and promptly landed on the doorstep of Tall Grass Bakery.
I have had no regrets since.
Their baguettes, dinner rolls, and sourdough bread were the BEST I have ever had in my life. They killed it. Super fluffy on the inside and the crust was just to die for. Even after I have had a full meal and some desserts, I still manage to fit in two dinner rolls because it's THAT good.
The granola was absolutely delicious and fresh as well; glad I no longer have to buy the subpar processed ones from the grocery stores.
Their payment system was SO prompt and not filled with time-wasting BS. You tell them your order, they grab the bread, you pay with a card, and BAM. Done. No contact necessary during these trying COVID times. No prompts for tips. The receipt is sent to your email address. You're literally in and out within a minute.
Such a big fan of this place. Will definitely hit it up every weekend for my carb needs.
I do not post reviews often, but felt compelled to leave one here. My first time visiting Seattle, this spot was recommended to me by my girlfriend's sister. I tried the Cinnamon Bun once, and have gone back to Tall Grass Bakery every day that I've been in Seattle since then. It is the best cinnamon roll that I have ever had, and I think about them often when I am back home in Texas. Please do yourself a favor and go get one today.
The shop is small, but there was a surprising amount of variety on the menu. We tried the baguette, sourdough, and a small seeded roll. It was all very good. We'll definitely be visiting again in the future.
As one can expect small of flakier and baked goods is mesmerizing. Highly recommend brioche. Arrive early.
Regular here for years! We even served this bread at our wedding.
Our go to is either Baker St. Sourdough (they’ll slice it for you!) or the hominy round (excellent with soups/stew/chili or as avocado toast).
Seriously, everything is good and there are some hidden gems you’ll have to uncover on your own ;)
Great whole grain and sourdough selections. Yummy fougasse.
Their olive bread is the best in town! There is no trip to Ballard without stopping here for a loaf or a bun!
So friendly and great breads. Must try's: baguette and olive bread. But there are so many to choose from.
The bread is excellent. The scone and pretzels delicious. Come here!! Nevertheless, the cookies are kinda meh. The chocolate chip cookies are better at the coffee shop next door.
Great neighborhood bakery. Nothing fancy, but it everything they make is super good. Just a fundamentally good bakery real ingredients and classic recipes and rustic breads. Also awesome that you can see into the actual bakery where the baker's are working.
The cinnamon rolls are amazing! Get extra because they stay fresh to enjoy the next day. Unfortunately it is awful tempting so sometimes they don’t last that long. We also love the bread with so many choices you never get bored. It’s worth a special trip. Checkout is touchless and you don’t step foot indoors. They have a great system.
Great pecan sticky buns & brez'n. Cookies and breads are good too
I've been getting my bread at Tall Grass since 2009. They are open again and I feel safe getting my bread there. You can order at the door. The people who work there have always been nice. Now, they are nice and safe ( masks, distance, paying, and receiving your bread all done well). Approach from the South for the safest experience.
Everything they make is delicious. Definitely get yourself a poppyseed challah and whatever scone they’re making that day. The pretzels and pretzel buns are delicious and their loaves make a great side with a meal or an excellent grilled sandwich. The birdseed bran muffins are breakfast in themselves.
I've been to this bakery twice so far and both times have been so happy with the fresh baked goods! When I end up here it is usually pretty early in the morning. The breads are fabulous and last longer than any of the breads we can buy in the store (getting from the source rather than premade and shipped out). The cinnamon rolls are amazing and delicious! not too gooey, not too hard, just perfect to pull apart and enjoy. The pretzels - if you are a fan of them like I am, are beautiful and perfect! Head to the bakery around about 11am or so to get those fresh from the oven - they remind me of PA soft pretzels which I miss so much!
Good local artisan bakery in Ballard. They have a,wide range of breads available, from rye to sourdough to whole grain. Excellent pretzels as well; I pick some up whenever I'm there. There's usually a line to get their bread in the morning, so be prepared.
There are some very dedicated fans for this bakery. Call ahead to reserve your favorites.
Shhh...best kept secret in Ballard. Fills 24th Street with a wonderful aroma of fresh baked bread ...daring you not to take a peek inside to see what’s baking!
As we are newer to this part of Seattle, we are just beginning to realize the other customer reviews are on point, especially, if artisan breads made fresh daily is something you might enjoy.
I'm convinced this bakery hacked my families emails and stole my deceased Omi's whole wheat bread recipe. Their whole wheat/rye breads are so perfectly balanced that you get that intensity of a "heavy" whole grain style rye without the stodginess or overwhelming acidity. With toasted pumpkin, flax, and sesame seeds rounding out the crust, these loaves are the only way I can feel anything anymore...
"Pullman Loaf" - The best white/french loaf in the city. Friendly service every time - at both the Farmers Markets and the Ballard Store. LOVE the cinnamon rolls too:)
Always a great selection of breads and other baked goods. Especially try the faugasse, which is made with Greek olives and onions, then twisted into a large pretzel-shaped, inch-thick braid. This is perfectly baked so there is a crisp outside and a chewy interior.
Then, there is Friday's twisted challah bread (with or without poppy seeds).
This is really good bread! It tastes amazing. I've been trying to find a bakery like this in Seattle for soo long: this is the one! I'm happy to come from capital hill over to ballard for this.
Tall Grass is the best bakery in Seattle! I don't live nearby the shop, so I buy their breads at one of the farmers markets. The olive and herb fougasse and the walnut pain au levain are my favorites. Actually, EVERYTHING I bought so far has been great! I come from Germany, truly a "bakery paradise", and tall grass makes me feel at home ❤ thank you!!
Great bread! Many different varieties, and if you are lucky enough to get a cinnamon roll without raisins of course... Then you won't be disappointed.
All Rye and whole wheat sourdough taste awesome. All organic, this bread is easy to digest, doesn't spike my blood sugar, and satiates me for hours. Quality chow for sure, at a good value.
Best cinnamom rolls I've EVER had. My little sis loves cinnamon rolls and she called this place 'life changing.'
No seating inside, but a bench next door and park nearby. Grab and go even, WORTH A TRIP!
We purchased the challah bread for the first time this weekend as well as our usual oat and honey loaf at the Ballard Farmers Market. The challah was the best I have ever had light, fluffy, and slightly sweet. It will definitely be a new staple in our household.
It is surprisingly difficult to find 100% whole wheat bread in Seattle, but Tall Grass has it. I love the nutty taste and chewy texture. I just wish more stores carried it.
This may spark debate, but Tall Grass’ French baguettes are the best in the NW. I’ve gone everywhere looking for something close to what you’d find anywhere in Paris or Lyon. The quingnon is the proof.
Delicious rolls, especially the seeded ones! Reminds me of the fresh breads in Europe. I look forward to the granola every morning.
Amazing, real bread, the best
Lots of very yummy bread choices, really the cutest bakery. Vegan options. Try the olive and onion pretzel fougasse, so special and delicious
It's ridiculous how good this place is. The humans are lovely and super reasonable prices. The hominy bread changed my life for the better. Plus, no matter what little baked good you get to snack on, it's always going to be good.
Best bread and baked goods around (I love the super seeded rye and their granola)- the staff are wonderful. Can’t recommend this place enough!
The best challah not only in Seattle, but that I've ever tasted. Hominy bread is also fabulous.
Best bakery for just bread in Seattle. I live all the way over in West Seattle and hit them up every week at the farmers market, and occasionally drive all the way up to Ballard for my bread fix.
Small bakery with great selection of breads, scones. Love the coconut almond granola. They do sell at some of the farmers market
Absolutely delicious! My girlfriend and I had just returned from Paris, and were searching for a local bakery to pick up baguettes from when we stumble upon this local gem!
Best bakery in town with traditional recipes, that are too good to be messed with. One of the few places you get bread without added sugars or sweeteners!
Best bagettes in the world. Really!
Everything here is made with love care and expertise. You can’t go wrong whatever you choose. And to top it off this company is socially responsible and very generous to the community. Thank you tall grass bakery!!
Favorite bread baker in Seattle. The seeded rye and hominy are excellent and the pretzels and scones are another favorite.
Great neighborhood bakery. I love that they're open later than your typical bakery. Can stop by after work and get fresh bread!
This is the best place to get authentic true rye bread. - like they make in Scandinavia ( Denmark). Yum and thanks
Yum; tried the hazelnut shortbread, cinnamon bun and sourdough bread. All of them were good.
Excellent fresh bread (we love the walnut levain and the olive fougasse) and friendly no-contact outdoor service during Covid.
Great bread. I feel so spoiled having them nearby. Be sure to prepaid for bread card to get discounts.
Great bread - their rye is the best. They just open too late. Buy your breakfast bread after 9 is too late.
This is the best bread in town. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is they so often are out of things and their hours are not always what one would hope.
Amazing bread, just wish the Challah didn't (almost) always sell out on Fridays.
Baguettes have an unbelievably tender crumb, and a crisp crust. Difficult for the home baker to replicate.
Delicious healthy bread and a civic neighbor: they donate to social justice and environmental causes regularly.
Small place that makes great bread and lots more. Worth visiting their location or in few of the local farmers market .
Everything is fantastic. I live a block away and come by for all kinds of breads. I am going to have to try the granola!
Tall Grass Bakery has excellent service and makes the best challah I've ever tasted, perfect for Shabbos.
I really like the rye bread they have, nice local bakery
By far the best baguettes (and bread in general) I've had in the U.S., and that's coming from someone who's lived in France
I have a kitchen in Seattle and I ordered bread for my new menu and let me tell you, amazing bread!
Great place. Delicious options that are made fresh daily. Love having this bakery near by.
Best all rye bread I've ever had. I think about it daily. And a great staff.
Best bread EVER! Great prices and decent customer service
Excelent bread be fteah baked daily. Be sure and aak about their bread card.
Great bakery and an important part of the neighborhood. Love the bread, employees, and the prepaid cards!
Fabulous breads and granola. Selection isn't huge but everything is delicious and that's what matters.
Rye bread is delicious. You can smell the place from half a block away.
Love the bread. We are hooked on sesame bread sticks and seeded baguettes :-)
I've had the cinnamon rolls and the baguette. Both were excellent.
Their rye bread is some of the best I've ever had. Can't get enough of it.
Great pretzel and pretzel bread. Very nice staff, and fresh goods. Well priced.
Their bread is one of the bests in the neighborhood.
Tasty all rye bread - nothing even close anywhere else
Amazing. Their bread is really good. I love it.
Best bread on Ballard period full stop 👍👍👍 …
Excellent bread, sour dough was lacking a little flavor but texture was on point
Great breads, nice customer service, very good prices. Z
I can never drive by this place without stopping in. The cinnamon scrolls are absolutely to die for!!
Best bakery in Ballard. Their baguette is AMAZING.
I live in Tacoma but I literally drive to Seattle for this bakery.
Simply the best darn baguette I have been able to find in Seattle!!!
The pecan sticky buns!
Best pumpernickel we have tasted anywhere!

(Translation) The quality of the bread is good, not many varieties. Produced in the store, I think the handmade bread is delicious :)
(Original)
麵包品質不錯,種類不多。在店內生產,覺得手工麵包很好吃:)
