Reviews of Nielsen’s Pastries
Went specifically looking for this place since my SO remembers the poppy seed danish from half a decade ago and it was one of the best pastry he's ever had so he wanted to share
Food/Taste/Flavor: 5/5 - this pastry shop definitely lives up to his memory and everything we tried was so good!!
Poppy Seed Danish (tebirkes) was buttery and flaky with just a hint of sweetness to contrast the savory/nuttiness from the poppy seeds.
Boller with a chocolate topping and some custard inside. It reminds me of a milk bread with the lightly sweet flavor and fluffy texture. The coffee was great with this since the acidity helped cut through some of the sweetness
Frosnapper was interesting to look at and we though it would be a more savory pastry since it had poppy and sesame seeds. It was flaky, buttery, sweet and crispy from the caramelized bottom, savory from the seeds, and we absolutely loved it. The sesame and caramelization reminds us of Asian sesame sweets but it added a great texture to this bread as well
Ambience: 5/5 - cute shop that feels warm and cozy. Someplace we would want to just hang out at. They had a sign outside asking to limit the number of customers in the store for safety
Service: 5/5 - super friendly and held a conversation with us while we were making our decision. Ask if you have any questions or want recommendations!
Value for price: 5/5 - great food and service and very reasonable price. There's definitely a very good reason why they've been around for so long!
Whoa. These were phenomenal. Only picked up the potato and tosca, but they were both fantastic. The potato was not overtly sweet and the perfect custard consistency. The tosca had an amazing almond paste that went perfectly with the raspberry jam and chocolate dipped on the sides. They also packaged it in the loveliest pink box and strings. I can’t wait to go back!
Yummy yummy. The last time I had pastries like this was when I was studying in Copenhagen back in the 80’s. I tried different ones. The “potato” was fantastic.
I absolutely LOVE Nielsens. This is a five minute walk from my house and they have the most incredible pastries, desserts and coffee drinks in Lower Queen Anne. This place is a treasure. The staff also goes above and beyond to be kind.
*I have tried almost everything on the menu and it has all been delicious. My partner and I LOVE the cinnamon rolls, cinnamon danish, and their cookie selection!
Cinnamon roll was delicious, pretty sweet but not sickly so. Iced latte was normal. Staff was very kind :)
The Potato. Best puff pastries with marzipan dusted with Cocoa powder. The only place I can get it.
Came here multiple times a week since it was just down the road from where I lived. The kringle slice, snitter, and danishes are always top notch and never disappoint. I also really like that they use caramel sauce instead of caramel flavour syrup in their coffee (I would always get a caramel cappuccino). Caramel syrup often makes my coffee to sweet so I really appreciated this. Everyone inside is always incredibly nice. You should absolutely check this place out.
Oh my. The pastries here are superb. The Snitter is the loveliest I've ever tasted! Nielsen's has an old soul, a remarkable staff, and is a special place to step into.
An absolute lovely place for a coffee & Danish pastry. Helpful staff and everything is SO good. Lovely atmosphere with books, comfy chairs, music, and it is below street level which makes it even more cozy to me. During our trip to Seattle we started every day here after finding it down the street from our hotel and it became our absolute favorite part of the trip.
Love this place!
The box feels old fashioned, the food seems robust, and it is. I got the potato and a ginger shortbread. Potato is perfect, the marzipan is just pure almond flavor. The ginger shortbread is ok, not much ginger flavor. Will definitely go again! Staff are friendly as well. Wish I could get a to go menu but they don’t have any.
I just had the most amazing invention: cinnamon roll and custard danish combined. Plus since it was happy hour I got my pastry for free with purchase of a drip coffee. The interior is cozy; great place to chill with a book.
I just started returning to this bakery after having moved out of the area. It's as good as I remember. Not to sweet on there pastries and a very good staff. We just purchased an Apple Kringle to go and it's Tasty! My favorite in the store is the sniters. Go earlier for the best selection or pray you get lucky and it's just coming out of the oven!
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I downloaded a no waste food app called Too Good To Go and picked up a surprise bag of random pastries this afternoon. 1) I love that they are participating in this, 2) It was so easy and a great value and 3) Everything was delicious. Their entire menu is a slice of heaven. Oh and I also picked up a Potato because it’s my weakness.
Absolutely in love with this comfortable and cozy little bakery / café! I tried a slice of the apple kringle and was pleasantly surprised by the mellow yet intriguing flavors of the almond and spices that worked well to enhance both the flavor of the apple filling as well as the lovely pastry dough. I can't wait to come back and keep trying new things! Highly suggested!
This was our go to favorite breakfast in Seattle! We tried all the bakeries in lower Queen Anne and Toulouse Petite but this place outshined them all.
Their pastry dough is perfect. Yielding, flaky, sweet and eggy, yet also airy. We tried one of everything by the end of our stay. It's impossible to pick a favorite but the snitters are definitely some of the top on my list.
They also had my favorite cup of coffee in Seattle (note I like black coffee so I am rating based purely off the coffee's flavor and not any mix ins).
The inside is warm and welcoming like grandma's dining room. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Highly recommend!
Fantastic pastries with great service. I had the fruits and cream cheese danish and the cinnamon danish and both were excellent choice. Loved the vibe inside and the staff had great recommendations since it was my first time.
I got to try these AMAZING pastries twice over my weekend in Seattle, and I can't wait to go back! Everything I tried- both the sweet and savory pastries, we're delicious! The owners and staff I encountered were so sweet and kind. I highly recommend stopping here at any chance you get!
I’m glad there are still places in Seattle like Nielsen Pastries serving Scandinavian desserts and pastries. I visited on a quiet Saturday afternoon an hour before closing. Most of their cases were empty which makes a lot of sense, however, the person working there was saying that it was really busy earlier that day and there is typically much more left at that time. As an aside, the person helping us was very friendly. While I took what I bought to go, the shop had a lot of tables to sit and eat at which is a definite plus. I ended up buying a Napoleon hat and a kransekage cookie. Both were very good. The Napoleon hat was a ball of marzipan wrapped in pastry dough and dipped partially in chocolate. It wasn’t too sweet due to the pastry dough and the marzipan was tasty. The kransekage was essentially a soft almond cookie with some marzipan in it as well with a drizzle of chocolate. I’m not in Queen Anne very often but I’ll have to visit again next time and hopefully they’ll have more leftover.
A neighborhood favorite! I really enjoy the team of owners/operators here, plus their food and beverage selection is delicious! If you’re not sure what to get, you really can’t go wrong. I’m a big fan of the snitter and the potato, but opt for the frøsnapper when I’m craving something more mild. In the wintertime, try “the cozy”! It’s my favorite drink ever, hands down.
I was blessed to try these pastries while on a scuba diving trip with Under Water Works from Portland today. I must say these are absolutely the best. Can’t wait to come back up so I can get a box or 2 for myself.
Keep up your fantastic work.
Blew away my expectations with taste and price. 4 pastries + latte all for $21!! Such a good deal. The potato was amazing and the b.o.b was soooo soo good.
Nielsen's opened in 1965 on 3rd Avenue in downtown Seattle. I attended K-4 at Seward Elementary School (now TOPS), and after my parents bought a home in the Mount Baker neighborhood, my siblings and I took the city bus to/from school. With a transfer right out front of Nielsen's! When we had saved up our allowance, we could purchase a "potato" and eat it on the No. 10 (later 14) bus ride home. Pastries are still awesome today!
While visiting my sister, she took me to this great little pastry place. We got some cinnamon rolls, Danish and coffee. I'll never forget the flavors. It was amazing.
Cute spot with amazing pastries! Extremely friendly staff too! 😊👍 …
This is the cutest coziest little nook ever. I'm glad I found it! All of their pastries are so yummy, good coffee, couches, books, tea, games... what more could you ask for?
Every pastry here is SO good. Like hold-your-head-in-your-hands, take-a-moment-to-reevaulate-your-life good.
I visited this bakery for the first time today after many of my friends talked it up.
They weren’t wrong!! I love this adorable pastry shop! In the morning when I walked by, the delicious smell of baking wafted out on to the street! I loved their Danishes and Mocha. Plus, the service was warm and welcoming!
I plan on making multiple trips to this place as long as I live in the neighborhood!
Edit: Also adding the experience from a recent visit - their coffee smells heavenly and those fruit danishes and Russian tea cakes are yumm-ilicious!! 😋😋
Nielsen's is so wonderful!! Not only are their pastries delicious (my favorite is the snitter!), but I've now ordered their baker's box twice during quarantine and it's great! They are always so sweet in the store as well as online while ordering the baker's box. They are the perfect neighborhood bakery!
Yummy pastries! Really nice staff. Nice happy hour deal from 2pm-? .. (buy an espresso drink and get a free pastry.) Will be returning to try more items from the menu. Ordered lemon ginger iced tea and it was pretty funky tasting so that will not be a reorder.
Outstanding drip coffee and friendly service! The pastries, as you might be able to smell over at Mercer street, are outstanding. And why wouldn’t they be, there is about as much space dedicated to baking as customer seating!
Extremely solid pastries and coffee. The photos may remind you a bit of something disappointing you had at a continental breakfast at a cheap hotel, but you should give Nielsen's a chance. It's the real deal. Universally friendly staff, too.
Love this place! Their staff are extremely welcoming and very nice to talk to! We tried a few different pastries and they were the best we've had anywhere! Highly recommend!
Nielsen's was my introduction to Danish pastries and one I will never forget. Most of use have had a fruit Danish before, but exploring their sesame and poppy seed varieties are a must-do! Marzipan is not something I grew up with, but the light almond hints in most of their pastries is a true joy.
Quaint pastry shop, definitely worth the visit. Wish they were open more, but love their food and coffee. Staff is always polite and great to chat with too!
This place is no frills, old school style, but sometimes that's just right. When I visited today there was a completely unreasonable K-person having a fit about nothing important at the head of the line. The staff was very gracious and professional, not letting one b***** person ruin things for everyone else. Good value on all counts!
If you love chocolate, you have to try their Sarah's.... so good!
I've been visiting John Nielsen's since the 70's when he was on 3rd and Union. Hasn't changed still awesome!
If I could eat in only one place in Seattle, it would be Nielsen's. Fantastic pastries, delicious sandwiches, amazing sandwiches, stellar coffee and wonderful people!
Get the Kringle. It's $16 and is a huge pretzel of pastry, custard, almond paste, almonds and a small amount of raisins that will feed a few people. It's sooo good. I've found it's a great treat to get in the morning and bring home to feed visiting guests.
The rest of their pastries are also excellent. They have savory as well as sweet. $3 a piece for the most part.
Wish they were open a bit later in the afternoon. I'd likely grab a book or a friend and hang out there after work.
Once you have a pastry from here, you are ruined for life, in a good way. Authentic Danish pastries, cakes, including wedding cakes, that are to die for, and don't forget to try the potato if you've never had one. The lunch soups and sandwiches are always delicious. The service is friendly and the vibe is inviting. Just go here. It's pretty much impossible to order something you won't like.
We randomly found this gem while vacationing in the area, and it quickly became a highlight of our stay. The authentic Danish style pastries are crafted to perfection, and the prices are more than reasonable. In three separate trips, we enjoyed the Kringle, bear claw, danishes, a variety of shortbread cookies and their signature "potato". Each of these was as delectable as the last; combined they make Nielsen's the best neighborhood bakery in Seattle.
I love this weird little place. Come for the hipster baristas pulling decent shots; stay for the fantastic treats. This is not Starbucks--this is real old-school Seattle. Pro tip: bring one of their pink boxes full of pastries to an important meeting for positive results. 😁 …
I have to say one of the best pastry i have ever had in my life I got from here, we'll actually two of the best pastries. I got the kringle and the potato I believe it's called... would absolutely recommend this awesome place to everyone.. great great customer service as well... Awesome experience..
I think Nielsen's pastries are made on site every day, and they are excellent.
I have stopped in for a danish and coffee many times during the past several years and have always been happy with the food and the staff.
Also, the marzipan cake is the best I have ever had.
Great pastry, but off-putting service. I felt like I was intruding or interrupting when I walked in a week or so ago. The two folks on staff were talking to each other and didn’t greet me until I stood at the counter for a few minutes. No friendly smiles or anything that made me feel like sticking around to read my book and hangout. Everyone has off days so I’ll be back again to see if the atmosphere is better.
Great pastries, good coffee, tried a few things off the menu and everything is good
Worth stopping in for just the pastries, add good espresso and super friendly staff it's one of my favorites.
Have been there many times. When living in California would always stop to get pastries. All pastries are wonderful. Favorites are Potatoes (pastries ) & Napoleon Hats. Have been buying since his first shop on 2nd Ave 54 years ago.
I am a Dane, and am very particular about my Danish pastry... walked in and the aroma was wonderful, chose to try a chocolate eclair, perfect. We are planning on coming back again and again. Cute as can be and great staff!
Very tasty sweets but also some savory treats. They use real butter and you can tell by the taste. And great coffee! Highly recommend!
Eclairs and coffee yesssssss
Update: you have to order the eclairs and can pick them up on Friday.
Their other pastries are still there and delicious.
Nielsen's is quinitisentially cozy, from atmosphere to offerings to the staff.
Nielsen's has a wide variety of Danish pastries, from the classics to ones you might have only seen in a specialty shop or IKEA. I love the Kringle and the cinnamon Danish. While universally delicious, the pastries are sometimes a little messy in appearance.
You wouldn't think a bakery on the same block as a Taco Bell/KFC combo would be charming. And yet... The building is nestled a few steps down from street level. There are actual recliners (4 or 6) scattered around the cafe amidst soft lighting. The decor is Danish without being kitsch, and the large street level window lets in natural light.
The employees have gone out of their way to be helpful. After catching them in a rare moment where they were out of princess cake, the baker asked if I had 15 minutes and whipped up a fresh cake on the spot. Another employee pointed out a handy spot to lock up my bike (there aren't bike racks directly by the entrance).
One of Nielsen's specialties is princess cake. It's different than other princess cakes I've had. The marzipan is thinner and harder. There is a lot more custard. All in all it's not bad, but it might not be what you're expecting. I've only had two princess cakes in the city, but I prefer Byen Bakery's more familiar approach.
Local owned business since 1961. They do sourdough classes as well as running an inviting bakery and coffee shop. The owners are great, hygge atmosphere, great coffee and pastries.
I come here once a month and get some combination of the bear claw, the poppyseed danish, or the spinach & feta savory pastry. Each time, I am impressed by how delicious each is.
Love this place! The workers are so nice and they make such great pastries! Haven't had one I don't like. Would highly recommend.
My favorite bakery in Seattle. Delicious pastries, yummy lunch options (esp. the chipotle chicken sandwich), and the best service in the land. If you want to delight your tummy and spend time in a delightfully unpretentious space--this is your place.
Wonderful service and atmosphere. Well priced items. Their sandwiches and heated goods have often been not heated completely and have some unfortunate lukewarm spots. A great place for a coffee.
Snitter is my new favorite food! I could have eaten a dozen of these! I also got a couple of their breakfast sandiches (a ham and provolone in a light, puff pastry) and they too were delicious.
Makes my Swedish heart a little bit happier in this country. Can confirm that a large part of their selection is very much authentic Danish pastries. And there's a few "Americanized" items in there, but understandably so as they wouldn't fit the US palate otherwise.
Love this place. Yummy traditional pastries. Great staff. Cozy. Great dog walking destination in the morning (you can tie dogs outside within view, dog treats inside).
The cutest little coffee shop in Queen Anne! Very tasty Danish style laminated dough pastries. Also soups, salads, sandwiches, etc.
A danish pastry house with decent coffee and great customer service. I was able to get a good Seattle cup of brew, order pastries for a meeting and take a few minutes to relax in this quaint old-fashioned shop.
An total gem in Uptown Seattle. Be sure to try the apple kringle, and order some for the holidays.
Love their pastries!! They're doing great during Covid as well, limiting it to 4 customers at a time and providing a specific area for waiting on your coffee.
An absolute pandemic favorite. Incredible pastries, safe store operation.
The potatoes were delicious! It's a pastry filled with cream with a hint of almond and coated with cocoa.
The Snitter, the Kringle, or the Potato? That is the question.
It's a bit of a trek for me, so I don't bother to try to choose between the three. Gotta get 'em all!
Honestly, you can't go wrong here. Superb Danish pastries with the perfect level of sweetness and the subtle yet alluring scent of almond. A must try!
I was shocked to discover this little place, had no idea it was here. Fantastic Scandinavian goodies at excellent prices. I've loved everything I've tried so far.
Absolutely phenomenal! Delicious, great variety, tasty options. 20 stars!
Has a very unique old-fashioned charm to it. The food was excellent quality and exceptionally inviting, same goes for the staff.
The place is nice and quaint. They have some good pastries. They have some toys on the side for kids to play which is a bonus for any parent who wants to enjoy a cup of coffee.
Delicious pastries!! Haven’t tried the coffee yet.
This place is amazing. The staff are friendly and the pastries are divine. I make it point to go here every time I'm in the neighborhood. Don't miss it.
Very tasty coffee. And a great cinnamon roll - not too sweet and lovely with the almonds. Everything looked so good it was hard to choose just one.
The best little Danish bakery in Seattle! Love picking up a few danishes and sweets from here in the morning. The Snitter is one of the best! 😋 …
We are long time customers, and whenever we have a special occasion we order a marzipan cake from Nielsen's. While you're at it, pick up a potato, you won't be disappointed!
Great coffee, cozy atmosphere, and excellent customer service.
Quiet Danish bakery hidden in Lower Queen Anne. Love the pastries. Everything I've had was *at least* above average. Only bummer is they're closed on Sundays.
The snitters are worth the hype x100. Great pasties and great service. The whole experience made me so glad to be alive.
Cutest little Danish cafe with a great selection of danishes and coffe as well as teas! The inside is very Scandinavian and cozy (hygge). Highly recommended!
Great pastries especially the marzipan cake. 48 hr prior reservation required.
Beloved bakery.... it's like they can do no wrong. Every single pastry, from savory to sweet, is unique and bursting with a depth of flavor and texture.
I love to go here whenever I'm in town. Great pastries. And I got a couple of really great cakes here for my wedding. Thanks Nielsen's Pastries!
One of the best pastries I had in a long time... really good and the drinks are also tasty.
I've only been a few times, but it's great. Super nice employees and the pastries are always top notch.
Nielsen's has the most delicious pastries - both savory and sweet options. Try the kringle!
Love this place! A true neighborhood store to grab something fast or hang out in their cozy place. The price is very very reasonable and the food is so delicious.
I smelled it walking on Mercer. Very good pastries. I wish google actually returned this place instead of Taco Bell when I search for “breakfast”.
Wonderful coffee and pastries
Always a pleasant time at Nielsens. The staff is friendly and happy to help you with the most delicious pastries and coffee.
Great place! The owners are super sweet and friendly. Pastries and sweets are really good. Definitely recommend the Sara Bernhardt.
I have yet to try something I do not like.
Pastries are excellent. The shop has a local feel. The coffee is good, but definitely not the main draw.
Great neighborhood pastry and coffee shop. It always smells wonderful and it's just impossible to walk out without buying a pastry!
This is my local pastry place. I love it. Excellent food, coffee and customer service. I highly recommend it.
Pastries and staff are great. Well worth the detour off the main road. There are much better places for coffee, however.
Charming shop with Danish-themed decor and delicious pastries!
Fantastic. My favorite bakery
Good coffee. Really tasty tomato/cheese sandwich. The pastries are amazing.
Sooo good
Turkey pesto sandwich was great. Sweet pastries were ok, in my opinion.
Love this place! Great homemade soups for lunch, excellent coffee and pastries for breakfast and even happy hour from 2 to 3.
Incredibly delicious morning spent here at the pastry shop. Made great memories and someone’s birthday extra special.
Wide range of excellently crafted pastries, friendly people, and good coffee, too.
Nice relaxed comfy atmosphere. Great selection, great food, great drinks. Very friendly neighborhood coffee/pastry shop.
Always a winner. Their pastries are top notch, and the staff is wonderful.
Delicious, authentic, and super hyggeligt. Would for sure recommend if you want a real taste of Danmark.
Excellent Danish pastries. Appreciate them keeping the traditions alive.
Best pastry I’ve ever ever had!!! Also very friendly staff :)
Has a great neighborhood feel to it. Great coffee, treats, and staff.
Delish! You know when you're really craving a good sandwich and you get EXACTLY what you were thinking of?? That's Nielsen's. LOVE.
Amazing pastries. Amazing staff. They're Instagram makes me drool. It's a must visit <3
Real-deal pastries and solid coffee. Unpretentious, comfortable atmosphere and a long history of operator ownership.

Amazing pastries and chocolate desserts! Friendly service. A must try!
Fantastic Danish pastry shop with nice espresso drinks. Food was really special!
I'm not exaggerating when I say that today I had the best cheese danish I've ever had. This place is fantastic.
Absolutely a must if you are in the area. The bakery is incredible. Pass on the coffee though.
A nice young gentleman named Alec helped me pick the perfect pastry. What a lovely little place.
Besides friendly staff and amazing coffee, their pastries ... wow.
So good, really to die for.
The potato here was pretty bad for a vegetable but pretty life changing as a pastry. Try it all and you'll be happy
Highly recommend the Brie/onion/bacon and provolone/ham pastries. Simple done well.
Friendly people, delicious pastries and pleasant atmosphere. An excellent way to start the day.
Fairly good coffee! What Neilsen's shines is their pastries! You have to get the kringle!
Great Danish bakery that also servers excellent coffee and sandwiches. Soup too.
Superb!
Neighborhood fave and true community spot. Beautiful blend of honoring tradition and progress
Every year I come here for kringle ..they are very very delicious here and their coffee is also superb
What could bring greater joy to the heart than having a snitter hand-delivered from Seattle to Portland?

The best Marzipan cake I have ever had !!! Wonderful little neighborhood bakery.
I love everything about this place and hope it never changes. It's been the same since the late 90s at least when I first went.
Great espresso drinks and the best kringle
Always tasty, heavy on the almond paste, plus the staff is super sweet
