Backer’s is a true Salt Lake original. Few flavors make me more nostalgic than their icing. The attention to detail on their pastries is pretty amazing. I can never get over how perfect the piping is on each individual cake and cookie. I love pretty much everything I’ve had and I’ve been coming since I was a kid. The donuts are probably the most slept on and delicious item. But you really can’t go wrong with anything.

This place is the perfect IYKYK type place. My family have been getting the best birthday cakes here for the last 30+ years. Unbelievable quality cakes and cookies. If you haven't been here it is definitely worth stopping by to see what you have been missing.

Stopped here a few days ago and finally got around to sampling everything we got. We got a chocolate chip cookie, a chocolate parfait cookie, a chocolate sammie and a white cake and chocolate cake with raspberry slice. The chocolate chip cookie and the Sammie were the best thing we tried, the white cake was next best, chocolate cake was after that and last was the parfait cookie though I could see why others would enjoy it. It was more of a sandy cookie but with chocolate chips added. Also, the cakes were slightly dry, the raspberry filling was too thin to really taste, and for me, the frosting was way too sweet. All of the items seemed to be made from older recipes which triggered a bit of nostalgia in me. Cute place, decent pastries, worth a stop.

This place is great. It has been there for many decades. We hadn't been forever and wanted something sweet and we picked the right place. There are many varieties of cookies that you don't recognize and a lot that came from the WWII era. They are really good as well

Sweet pastries and sweet employees make for a sweet experience with a delicious ending! When you see how long this business has been around you would be surprised if you didn’t have a sweet experience. But there is more. I don’t hide that I have Parkinson’s. In addition to three delicious cookies, I also bought a bottle of water. When I tried to open it my mind was out to lunch and my hand just wouldn’t respond. One of the employees saw I was struggling. She gave me instructions as to how to open the bottle, with no judgment in her voice. I said my Parkinson’s sometimes makes easy things take longer time. I handed her the bottle and she opened it and handed it back. When she handed it back all her eyes were saying to me was love. I saved the bottle to use it again To remind of the experience. She didn’t make a big deal of the experience, which I appreciated. She just gave me no judgment or pity. She just gave me one more sweet experience ❤️

I come to Mrs Backers for one reason. Their Danish Pastries. I’m leaving this review because I skimmed through several reviews and nobody mentioned them. They are to die for. Flaky beautiful and delicate Danish pastry, the right proportion of filling (I love the cherry the most and the cream cheese one is my second pick) and just a hint of spice… not too sweet, not too big; they are absolutely delicious and are the best in the valley in my opinion. Their cookies are good, the cakes are beautiful , the shop is hilariously pink and cute and needs no changes (if it ain’t broke don’t fix it), the location is good, the prices are fair and those DANISHES. Go get one. You will understand my dedication. Cheers!

I have seen this little bakery shop for years and finally stopped by to step back in time. Mrs. Backer’s Bakery Shop didn’t disappoint. The friendly staff gushed about how cute my granddaughter was and so I knew we were off to a great start. I choose 1/2 dozen cookies,per their recommendation, and I was very pleased! (You can see the bakery across the street.) This place is quaint with an old fashioned vibe. It could maybe use a little face lift to keep the old look, but freshen it up a little:) but we enjoyed our visit!

Hot cross buns! Great old fashioned bakery. It is also a quick walk up south temple from downtown. The walk is well worth the molasses cookies, hot cross buns, and seasonal fare. The Irish soda bread was good. Adequately staffed with nice people. I will be back for the meat pies, and a special order spice cake if needed in the future.

I love their Hawaiian pineapple petit fours so I ordered their smallest 6" cake to match. I regret spending $30 on this cake! Their buttercream frosting is my absolute favorite, but it's pretty thin on my cake so that's really disappointing. The pineapple filling is barely there too! Overall, I'm very disappointed with the quality and quantity, especially for the cost. I would have been better off just getting the original petit fours.

I can only speak for the Danishes and the Chocolate Fudge Bears! They were fantastic! Friendly service. My girls loved that everything from the building to the receipt was pink. We'll be back at least once more before we leave.

Very hit and miss pastries. My favorites by far are the Snickerdoodle Sammie and Oreo Cheesecake Cookie. And they are GOOD. Employees are standard levels of kind. Reminds me of a dusty grandma house from something like the 70’s in there, with an almost garish colorful/whimsical Willy Wonka-esque spin

I personally think their desserts are too sweet. But my wife has been going here her whole life for birthday cakes, cup cakes and meat pies and it's a mix of tradition and her preference that we keep going back. That said, their cakes are much better than at most grocery stores.

I went a half hour before closing on the Fri. after Christmas. The shelves were mostly bare, and half of what was there was left from before the holiday. The had taken down most of the Christmas decor and were just starting to get out the Valentine's day stuff. I was taking my wife there for the first time and we were pretty disappointed because its usually very well decorated and have the pastries to match. We did buy some cookies that were fresh, and they were delicious, it just wasn't quite the shopping experience I was hoping for. Due to the quality of the food, I will give it another chance.

600+ Mile drive 8+ hours in the car plus the price of the trip and cake 💖💯😋🙌. As a child my Daddy always showed up with a cake from Mrs. BACKER'S PASTRY SHOP for each of our Birthdays, (there were 8 of us kids so... )We got a lot of these cakes😋. Over the past 2 years we've missed out on anything birthday party related 😔, the girls we're craving cake and sissy thought about baking one but, Mom said "we haven't had a Mrs. BACKER'S cake for awhile now. With Covid19 situation it's been 3 years", in a flash we were on our way to Salt Lake City. That's right we drove 300+ miles Just to get one of those cakes...and turned around and drove 300+miles home with our treasure. If that doesn't say how good this PASTRY SHOP is, I don't know what would convince you to get in there and taste one for yourself ❤️.

This is one of the best pastry bakeries in Salt Lake City. I have been going there since the mid 80's and the quality of the pastries has never changed. Friendly service which you would expect from a small shop. Great verity and they will custom make cakes and stuff like that. That is where my wife and I got our wedding cake from.

I just Love Mrs. Baker's! Growing up, My Mother got our Birthday cakes here. Always a Pleasantry to go there. Good Memories! Mrs. Baker's is pricey, but Well worth it! They have Cakes, cookies, & other Delicious pastries. They even have Meat-Pies & Chili. Their Cakes & Cup-cakes are So light & airy, their Frosting Sweet & Unique! Unlike any Frosting I've ever tasted. Definately sure to cure your sweet tooth. They have Been in Business for over 70 years. They are located in Downtown Salt Lake City.

Received a cake on the Friday before Mother’s Day. Cake was dry. Has a beautiful fine crumb but I’ve probably had dry cake from here as often as not. Also received raspberry jam filled cookies and plain sugar cookies with cream cheese frosting. The jam filled were very good but the plain were very bland.

Mrs. Backer's is a Salt Lake treasure. It's been around forever and has held onto traditions of excellence and great service. There is always a good variety of baked goods, and they're always yummy. The cakes are works of art. I stop in once a week on my day off for one of their little triangle cakes, and it's something I look forward to all week. Most of my family birthdays and other occasions over the years have included a Mrs. Backer's cake.

I wish I could give them more than 5 stars!! They have taken decorating cakes to a whole new level!! I've always been so impressed by how real their icing flowers look. They are truly works of art! They made our wedding cake as a special request, and it was just phenominal! For our cake, they made a replica of the S.L. Temple where we were married! And they used royal icing to capture every detail of every window and spire, etc. People were asking me who made our wedding cake for months afterward. Wow, I don't understand any of the negative reviews. I moved to Utah from New York City over 30 years ago. This bakery rivals any of the Mom and Pop establishments there. It is a specialty bakery, not a general bakery. It is called Mrs. Backer's Pastry Shop. It is not a smoothies store. I wouldn't ask for a hamburger at Chick-fil-A, would you? As far as poor service, that has never been my experience. It's been quite the opposite. Everyone has always been so courteous and willing to help me. Sometimes I fear it is our own attitudes that need to be checked at the door before we ask for service. When we start acting like we are the most important person in the world, therein lies the problem. We all have bad days, customer and server alike. Are you cheery and agreeable 24/7? If you feel you were not listened to, ask again. It's simple. We live in an instant gratification world. Just chill.

Mr.s Backer's Pastry Shop has been opened in 1941 and is now being run by the third generation family. The store design and color scheme are original and have not been changed. Besides offering their famous cakes, they also make a large assortment of danishes, donuts, French pastries, cookies, cupcakes, brownies, lemon bars, raspberry cream cheese tarts, pies, éclairs, breads, and rolls. Unrelated to traditional baked goods, but still delicious, they also offer meat pies and chili.

Mrs Backer's bakery has all the traditional cookies and Baked goods versus a contemporary bakery that has fancy names of things you arent familar with. Such as snicker doodles , macaroons, and wedding cookies.all the things mom used to make growing up. Their cakes are beautifully decorated. The doughnuts are made from scratch. Reminded me of the bakery I went as a kid and taste like it was home baked . Fresh and good . Cool window decorations .

One of the oldest bakeries in the downtown area, Mrs. Backer's stays true to classic style. Stepping through the doors is like stepping into a time capsule, with classic pastry cases. A bit on the pricy side, but certainly worth it for the consistently good products.

I have been a patron of Mrs. Bakers since I was a young boy. We have bought all our family birthday cakes there for 45 plus years. The cakes are amazing and the people are always friendly. My family lives in South Jordan and we drive clear downtown to pick up our cakes. Mrs. Bakers is more than a bake shop it is a family tradition to our family and a lot of others.
