Reviews of Tony's Donut Shop
Continues to be the best selection of donuts in the area. Been coming here for over 30 years.
Tony's Donut Shop is the one to go to! Fresh, fluffy, big, and just the right amount of sweet. It's a good place to get inexpensive emptied frosting buckets for your home projects!
The Bismarck is chocked full of filling. You have to have multiple napkins to finish it. Good coffee and great pastries.
Great donut place with ample parking and friendly staff. Visited several times. My favorites were the eclair and cream horn.
First time stopping in to Tony's Donuts, and we thouroughly enjoyed! Tried the maple glazed and chocolate glazed, they were delicious, fluffy, straight-forward donuts. Not over-priced either. The fellow behind the counter was very friendly. There were tables and chairs, but we didn't stay to eat. The parking lot is small, not sure what it's like in the mornings, but no trouble finding parking at 3pm!
Our favorite donut shop never lets us down. When we venture into town, we often pick up a 1/2 dozen donuts and some eclairs for a treat. They bake the old fashioned donuts we had as kids and not the greasy lead sinkers that you often get at the chains. Unlike the latter's donuts they do not revisit you a few hours later.
Whenever our family 'From Away' comes back to visit, the first stop, after the baggage claim at the airport, is Tony's which is conveniently nearby. The grandchildren love to stand at the counter display and pick out their favorite donuts and pastries. It is the proverbial 'kid in the candy shop' scene. Usually a few donuts never make it back to the car.
The counter clerks are very patient as you pick out one of these and two of those and ask for granulated sugar on some and powdered sugar on others.
If you have never had them, give them a visit, but beware: you won't be satisfied with 'chain' donuts anymore. By the way: the donuts with the holes in the middle have had all the calories removed, so eat away and enjoy.
First time to Tony's and it didn't disappoint. There was a decent selection and everything looked good. Pictured is an apple fritter. It was huge, about 7 inches in diameter. It was also filled with apple. The blueberry donut was filled with blueberries. Donuts are pretty pricey compared to Dunkin, but the quality is way better.
The Best Homemade Donuts in the World!! My Favorite is the original Jelly Donut dipped in Powdered Sugar and the Raised Jelly & a Chocolate Kruller... Yum! I had the privilege to know the late Tony (A Great Man). His son Ricky and daughter in law are carrying on with the same Quality as Tony!! Bon Appetit! Chef Perry
Love them for 45 years, always have to have some when I come to Maine!!!
Found Tony's over 20 yrs ago on one of our many trips to Maine. Great donuts. Love the bumper sticker. Now a Mainer going on 15 yrs
Go for the Bavarian Boat! Better than pastries off the desert cart at a New York restaurant.
Great local donut store and I recommended the glaze. It’s different from the donut chains and owned by local owner in Portland.
Best place ive had a breakfast in a while, they have every baked good like muffins to deserts. The donuts and other confections have big portions for the price. The people were nice and the store was clean.
This is only the second time I've been to Tony's but they're incredible! The donuts are made fresh daily (I'd recommend blueberry or chocolate glaze but they're all amazing) and are sometimes even still warm, or you can grab a bag of day-old donuts as well, which are just as good. If you're not into donuts, they've also got other pastries and drinks. The cashier, Devin, was extremely welcoming and all in all it was a great donut experience!
Delightful little hole-in-the-wall donut shop! (Get it, holes, donuts, lols.) Donuts are big portions, fresh, tasty. Lots of your traditional American style flavors like chocolate glaze, variety of jellies, Bavarian cream, etc. I recommend the glazed molasses donut!! Personally I've never seen a molasses donut anywhere else before, and it was GOOD! The selection of Bismarck style donuts are good too, but FYI these are bigger than the others and because they have 2 fillings (a jelly or custardy thing plus cream), they are heavier than the other donuts and I struggled to finish my lemon Bismarck even though it was great. I don't know if I would call these artisanal, but they are definitely many steps above somewhere like dunks. Maybe the traditional American diner style of donut is the best descriptor. Worth a trip if you're in the Portland area if you don't have food allergies! I didn't notice any gluten-free or allergy-sensitive options but I could be wrong about that since I didn't confirm with an employee.
As a New Yorker living in Portland, I have had trouble finding donuts I really enjoy. Holy Donut though good is too greasy for my personal taste, HiFi is a bit better but so fancy. This place hits the mark for me, closest thing I’ve found to what I’m used to at home - simple, to the point, amazing. The cinnamon and blueberry glaze are my favorite! ❤️
Third donut shop for me to try in Portland. Ordered a few cake donuts, one glazed by which I judge all donut shops, and a boston cream. I, personally, would skip the cake donuts again. Glazed was ok. The boston cream donut was amongst the best I've ever had. If I could just get a glazed custard filled I might feel I'm at home.
This family run store serves great donuts.
We especially like the chocolate cake donuts covered with sugar. They have a variety of products. We go there every time that we visit Portland.
The store also has drinks.
The staff is helpful and friendly.
Raspberry puff? Oh, yeah. Delicious sugar bomb.
I don't live in Maine but am from Maine. For many years I have traveled from Ct.to Eastport and always stopped there to get donuts. Unfortunately today will be my last stop. The prices have gone up tremendously. I got 1 1/2 dozen donuts and 2 apple turnovers...."40.00"!!!! Love their donuts.
I have to say, best doughnuts by far I've ever had in my life. My #1 go to is a blueberry glazed can't get enough 5star all the way easy. A must have if you are in maine!
I actually prefer these over The Holy Donut. My favorites were the cinnamon and sugar, Bavarian cream, and blueberry glazed. My wife loved the cinnamon bun and the coconut chocolate donut. Prices were reasonable and there wasn't a wait like there was at The Holy Donut. Definitely highly recommend if you're in the Portland area.
It's a family tradition to stop in here to get some donuts. I now live on the other side of the country but was recently in Portland for a funeral. We all knew we had to stop in! The chocolate sugar is my favorite and I took a dozen back home with me. I freeze them in order to be able to enjoy one once a week and even when re-heated they are still so amazing!
Don't pass up on this shop when in the Portland area!
I see all the 5 star reviews. I imagine they might be with regards to the donuts. Only problem I have is that I have no idea what a fresh Tony’s donut tastes like. Everyplace else I go has “day old” donuts. Not Tony’s. Also can’t remember the last time a place I purchased donuts at didn’t offer reduced prices on a half dozen or dozen donuts. I’ll take the Cookie Jar any day.
Donuts were delicious, nothing fancy but delicious. We definitely want to go back to try some of the pastries
A rare gem if handmade donuts matter to you. Real crullers, not " donut sticks". Flavors you can't find like molasses. Mince turnovers! I even got a decent cup of decaf which is nearly impossible.
Let's start by saying Oh My God!!! Forget going to Dumpy Donuts and (Un)Holy Donuts. Tony's has been making Portland's best donuts for decades.
So today I stopped in and a new young crew is making the donuts today. Oh, did I tell you, they cook them right on the spot. Anyways, someone there had got this job to a tee. The donuts were warm, they were crunchy on the outside, soft inside and so good it would make your eyes roll. AND to top all this off, you're not paying an arm and a leg for them.
So if you haven't been to Tonys Donuts I'd say go... because if you don't I'm going to be one fat boy by the end of 2021!!
I have been getting donuts here for 30 years. They seem to change for a little bit but now they taste like they did when I was a kiddo.
Definitely take the 5 minute drive outside the city and get some real old fashion donuts like you're parents or grandparents would make. Immediately get the vibe that this is a small family run intimate place for the locals, not the tourists. Highly recommend over the other donut offerings in the city.
Great hand-cut donuts without the fuss.
Tony's donuts is conveniently located near the on/off ramps for 295 in Portland. Here you will find true Mainahs enjoying good company with good donuts, and perhaps a Moxie. The small, but not limited, selection of flavors and glazes are excellent. From blueberry, red velvet and plain to cinnamon sugar, maple glazed, chocolate and filled you can't go wrong. Don't expect to find no fancy sprinkles, bacon, or fruit loop covered donuts here. Just well made, great tasting classic donuts.
Tony's Doughnuts has the best doughnuts in the portland area! Fresh doughnuts. My favorites are glazed raspberry jelly, raised glazed, and blueberry glazed. If you haven't tried Tony's yet, you're missing out.
Tony's donuts have been part of our family's mornings for more than 30 years. Coffee, the morning paper, and a box of Tony's donuts were part of my parent's routine growing up; and now I'm happy to share the experience with my kids. My favorite are the chocolate with granulated sugar but you can't go wrong with any of the delicious donuts and pastries.
Tony's Donuts are a Portland fixture and for good reason! The bismarck pastries are my absolute favorite. The parking lot is very small here, but worth either waiting for a spot or parking farther away and then walking to get your sweet treat.
A must folks! Way better than the ""other shop' 😂
Please try the chocolate coconut, if available! Tony's closes by 1pm …
I traditionally love Tony's Donuts I was disappointed. The donuts were dry, our jelly filled ones only had a tablespoons worth if that of jelly. This is not the normal for them. Chalk it up to an off day in the baking sho💕 …
The people in there are wonderful and the Bismarck's are not to be missed. It doesn't matter what flavor you get, they are all scrumptious !!
Great place for home-made Donuts, the place is located in Portland, it is a good spot to strech your legs if you are driving on the 95. It is a 5-10 minute deviation but it will be worth it. You can go for a single donut and a Coffee or you can buy by dozens!
Personal Recomendation: Red Velvet Donut!
Price: $1.50 ea
While not one of the fancy new gourmet donut shops that have been popping up around town, Tony's makes some solid donuts using their classic family recipe. My husband is obsessed with their Angel Creme filled pastry...it's all he requested for Christmas last year.
<3! I showed up at 5:45 on a Sunday morning, so grateful the place was open THAT early on a weekend. The woman was very helpful and patient as I marveled at the amazing-looking donuts (plain, molasses, chocolate, Bavarian cream, blueberry, blueberry filled...) and the options (plain, sugared, glazed, powdered sugar, coconut...). I took a half-dozen with me in the car and couldn't stop eating. These blow away even my favorite local chain (Honey Dew). It is now a must stop anytime I'm in the greater Portland area.
They have a wide variety of donuts and crullers, and great coffee. The staff are all friendly, and treat everyone like family.
Still the BEST. Can't decide so I eat 2.
Tony's is a long-standing local favorite. Traditional donuts and pastries and hot coffee!
Tony's has always been one of my favorite Portland donut shops; an honest home-town alternative to Holy Donut or other newcomers. However, their recent COVID practices make me very uncomfortable as a customer.
For example, today I was picking up a dozen donuts for a work crew, Tony's would be perfect. Walk into the shop and the owner and all of the food service staff are unmasked, speaking over the donuts and in the faces of their customers, who were uniformly masked. Perhaps the owner is not convinced that COVID is spread in the air, or they may not have received the state memo requiring masking in food service.
Regardless of COVID, this is a food facility! If Dunkin Donuts workers wear hair nets and masks to rack donuts, that shows me a measure of respect and responsibility to keep my food safe.
Come on! Do I want to see a long-haired kitchen worker mixing dough in a 40 quart Hobart without a hair net, COVID or not?
In this time of uncertainty, I want to feel safe in the businesses I patronize. Unfortunately Tony's is off my list until they respect this customer's feelings.
Great local joint!
One of the few places left that'll make a a "Bavarian cream" donut.
They make their donuts a bit bigger than the Dunkin chain does
Prices are comparable..
Continuing to have the best traditional donuts and crullers, ever!
Bismarks and other pastries equally great quality! Coffee is always on and always soooooo good.
S
Love the donuts here. Chocolate glazed, molasses glazed, cinnamon and sugar, maple, and more. They have some other pastries and great service too.
There donuts and pastries are always so good.
Very polite people working there.
May not be trendy like some of the new donut shops popping up, but the donuts are amazing and the people are even better. Tony's Donut Shop has been a Portland landmark for years and will continue to be.
I have never been disappointed here. Best donuts and pastries.
You've never tasted molasses donuts until you've tried Tony's! Get there early right out of the oven! Still warm! OMG!!! Tons of other surprises! You won't be sorry
I'm 71....grew up in a home where mother made two double batches of home-made doughnuts every week, so, I know doughnuts! I have lived in many places and eaten LOTS of bakery Doughnuts over my long adult life! Guess what, Tony’s Doughnuts holds the prize for ”BEST DOUGHNUTS” (after Mom’s). For those locals who know the area here, I frequently walk, all the way from Cash Corner in South Portland all the way over to Tony’s for their Awesome Doughnuts. That’s almost 5 miles and back, so guess how good their doughnuts are.........😃🤪😋😛🤓🤩
This place is an institution. Decor is nothing special, location is a bit of a challenge when there's traffic. But they make a good solid donut that will fill you up! Better than most.
Incredible ginormous Mom & Pop donut shop. Delicious and the pride of the owners is palpable. Tremendous, do recommend.
Had the Raspberry Bismark and chocolate glazed donuts, Bismark is meal into itself and the chocolate is a solid donut, both are very good
REAL Donuts for real people. Fantastic!
Best doughnuts in town and the bismarks are phenomenal highly recommended
A place we always come back to when visiting Maine. Family owned and friendly staff. Send them to a 💘 one overnight and put a smile on there face. …
Love Tony's donuts! By far the BEST donuts in and around portland! Very pleased with customer service & food quality! Stop in and see for yourself, promise you wont be disappointed.
Was recommended this place by my good friend Rocco, and was not disappointed. Great prices, great service, and most importantly, great donuts! Puts Holy Donuts and any other places to shame. 5 stars!
I've lived all along between Maine and Nebraska, and I can testify that Tony's are the best doughnuts around. Both yeast and cake doughnuts are delicious, never ever stale, and FLAVORFUL - not the sugar bombs you'll find at Krispy Kreme or Dunks. The molasses doughnut is the highlight, but the chocolate is also excellent. But the true proof is in the plain cruller. Spiced perfectly with what seems to be nutmeg, clove, and maybe allspice. You know it's a great place when the most plain item makes you want to throw your family history of heart disease to the wind and eat ten more.
Best part? Yuppie/hipster free! Still serves mainly locals, doesn't try to do the whole "we're making doughnuts cool" thing that the cupcake people are doing. Authentic, delicious, inexpensive.
When I was a kid my best friend and I would walk home from St. Pat's school past Tony's (when it was in the same building as Anania's). The lady who worked the afternoons would give us money to get her a coffee from next door and she would give us a free doughnut. They are just as good now as they were then.
They are the best doughnuts on Earth. Better than anything in NYC, and ESPECIALLY better than the places in Portland, OR (they are tourist traps). Tony's is the best. Bar none.
Absolutely wonderful place sit and enjoy others over coffee or get the wonderful donuts and pastry to go. Raspberry Bismark my favorite, my 91 year old parents go for the glazed donuts!
Thought at first I was at KFC, but much to my surprise, wow....DONUTS!!!!! I was welcomed along with my service frogs (for my anxiety) and treated fairly. No shirt, no shoes, no problem!!!! They'll provide you whatever you need in life. Bathroom mints too....this place has it all
Hidden gem compared to the busy donut shops in the city. With plenty of selection throughout the day! Better prices too 😉 …
I've been going to this place since I was a kid that's always been the greatest place for donuts get there early when the glazed donuts are hot fresh in the bag the smell and the taste and everything is great ..don't take my word for it . Get here Get some donuts .
Tonys is a local donut shop thats rootss are deep in portlands history. The owner is one of the nicest guys youll ever meat and the donuts are delicious old fashioned hand cut donuts.
If I could only go to one donut shop in town this would be it. Great old school donuts without the wait!
Old School. Been getting a chocolate glazed for decades. Hasn't changed. Doesn't have to.
Great selection of fresh doughnuts, pastries, and muffins. Your search is over
The only donut shop in Portland for me! A destination in its own right. Too many favorites to list. Try a cruller!
Honestly, they are the best doughnuts I've ever eaten & my whole family feels the same way!
The best taste, price and service in town!
Fantastic donuts. Best in town! You can choose whether to have powdered sugar on your donut or not, which I appreciate.
Absolutely adore the doughnuts and bismarks. My favorites include jelly glazed, lemon filled, molasses, pumpkin. Usually a crowd of locals in the dining area.
What can I say... Life is uncertain eat dessert first!! No one better in the business! Great selection, awesome staff, and perfectly prepared pastries!

A Portland landmark. My favorite are the turnovers!
When our family wants donuts, Tony's is our 1st choice. Whenever we visit former Portlanders, they always ask for Tony's. I really miss seeing the tables of regulars ( and the fig squares).
