Reviews of Big Sky Bread Company
Best bakery in Portland. Always fresh, decent amount of specialized breads and baked goods. Turkey club and their paninis on the amazing bread is on point.
I have shopped at Big Sky Bread Co. for years. Always consistent and the width of their bread slices are perfect for sandwiches and toast. Their challah makes perfect french toast with wide, hand-cut slices. I am a fan of the "double punch" on Mondays. The granola is yummy, too.
Wonderful veggie sandwich. Kid friendly. Amazing bread. Attentive staff. ♥️✊
The fluffiest, most delicious English muffins in Portland. Can't go wrong with their loafs and bagels either! Cute atmosphere with open kitchen concept in the old firehouse.
Needed bread. Stopped here to buy some. Also, bought cookies. Nice salesperson.
Enough said, run there. The bagels. My god. I am from NY. They are that good. What a wonderful diverse bakery!
I love this place. My favorite items English muffin bread, raspberry poppers, raspberry tea ring, actually everything is great but those are my favs and the smell in the bakery so fabulous. When my kids were young we would stop here for breakfast before school for a special treat. They have a small table with bread dough and rollers and cookie cutters for the kids to play, tables and chairs, and big glass doors with lots of sun shining in. Such a delicious and pleasant place that I and my children loved. Great memories.
Always a pleasure to drop some $$ here: cookies are large, scones leave you satisfied and are large as well, cinnamon buns are NOT overly doughy - nicely balanced, staff always warm & welcoming. Breads look delicious. Overall, a nice selection, good quality - has not changed as some establishments do over time. Thank you.
This place is simply the best. The staff are extremely talented, the quality of the bread and other baked goods is phenomenal, and the prices are affordable given the quality. I come here weekly. I love the consistency of their usual selection and their weekly specials. The building is an old fire house, so in addition to the delicious bread and free samples, it is a joy to be in such an interesting old building.
I was torn between rating this spot four and five stars. They bill themselves as a bread company and in that I think they excel. There's all sorts of options to choose from and they're all wonderful. I've continued to come here for years if only for that.
Beyond the bread, however, things can be a little more hit or miss. Their chocolate chip cookies aren't really a style I enjoy, the lunch sandwiches are often good but not great. And as many other reviewers have said, the demeanor of the staff can sometimes be a little off putting compared to the typical bright friendly attitudes of fellow Portlanders.
Love the bread, love the sandwiches, don't love the communication. Totally understand there's a labor shortage, Big Sky is training, AND panini take more time. However, I was told it would be 5 to 10 minutes, which ended up being over 40, and nobody said anything until my sandwich was ready "sorry for the wait have a good day."
Knowing it could be over 20 or 30, I could leave, go run errands, etc...I just think being honest and up front with how long it will take, and communicating with a customer who is sitting in front of the cashier for 40 minutes waiting patiently, goes a long way.
One of the best bakeries in Portland. It feels like Big Sky has been here since the beginning of time, and locals have grown up on their bread. Big Sky is one of the old guard when it comes to Portland's rich food culture.
Bread, pastries, and other food in general is superb. Not sure what attitude problems are referenced in other reviews, or I've just been lucky enough to only encounter upbeat employees.
I wish there was a better coffee selection, but overall a pretty great place and the bread is fantastic for buying and taking home.
Big Sky is my neighborhood bakery, and I have been going to it since I was in high school. The vibe of a tucked-away old fire station is delightful. The ambiance tons of natural light, friendly staff and the smell of fresh bread make it one of my favorite places to get work done. I can't recommend Big Sky enough!
Super fresh baked goods at a reasonable price! Staff is super friendly and inviting as well! One of my favorite places in Portland!
Best raspberry/cranberry pie ever!
The bread, pastries, and granola are excellent. Come sample bread warm from the oven. Check the bakery schedule for when each bread option is baked.
Delicious snacks, pastries, cookies, and amazing varieties of bread!!
I love this place, just discovered it. Simple but great sandwiches, friendly staff. Extremely affordable. It's so great, go check them out!
A family favorite for many years. Fantastic breads, tasty pastries, and solid, affordable lunch/snack options. I love bringing the kids here. This particular location is located in a historic fire house, with huge glass windows in front, and the open, working bakery behind the counter. Be sure to ask for a free slice of bread with your meal.
This place vs. Most others in Portland. Hands down the best bread, breakfast sandy and atmosphere anywhere in the "city."
The product is 5-star, great bread. But, some of the people who work at the Deering Ave location are awful, some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced and I my expectations are not that high. It's one thing to not be friendly, but another to just be plain mean to customers.
These guys have delicious bread made right there! When you walk past the store, the smell is so good that you have to stop in. Its so fresh and reasonably priced, and there's a huge selection. Also a great place for bruch or lunch, away from the hubub of downtown. It's in an old fire station so the aesthetic is nice and the brick makes it feel cozy. The seating area is small inside, but very quaint and in the summer they have outside seating.
One stop for any fresh bread and bakery items. Blueberry scones are just yummy!!!
Incredible quality for the price. A go to for breakfast sandwiches. Made to order on their own English Muffins and cost less than most fast food places or even gas stations. Same for the sandwiches; made to order with fresh bread.
Big space with high ceilings. Yummy bread. Free bread slices to sample at the counter. Good place for kids-- there is a stack of kids books, and a play table that is often stocked with a large tub of bread dough and an assortment of tins, rollers, and cutters.
A bakery with lots of surprises, situated in an interesting building.
Big Sky is easy to overlook. Situated near the Dunkin Donuts on busy Forest Ave, Big Sky takes residence inside an old firehouse. Inside, there is an open kitchen and bakery, and a decent amount of dine-in seating.
Though Big Sky is primarily a bakery; you can buy bread, pastries, and coffee from their in-house stock - they also sell made-to-order sandwiches for both breakfast and lunch, as well as soups and salads.
With prices pretty much equal to those of a chain like Dunkin, you really can't go wrong. Do yourself a favor and check them out. Would highly recommend.
A great variety of baked goods and sandwiches. The staff are all really friendly and helpful, the seating area is pleasant, and the prices are more affordable than other bakeries in the area. I'll definitely be going back!
Big sky has awesome bread as well as breakfast sandwhiches from open till 11 after that they have great hot sandwhiches my favorite is the pesto panini. They make several varieties of sourdough bagels and cookie, scone, and various sweets offerings are constantly changing. There blueberry scones as well as savory scones are amazing. Foccacia, cornbread, whitebread, fruitbread, they have it all and its fresh made in house and wonderful. Love the rustic open feel of the inside and you can see everything there baking for bread or prepping for sandwhiches truly a wonderful place.
I tried this place for the first time recently. I liked watching them bake the bread right there in front of me. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and it was wonderful! I will definitely be returning. I also purchased some granola and it was great as well.
Visited January 2016
Easily one of the kindest atmospheres. A surprising amount of options, special orders, holiday bakes.
Best breakfast sandwiches in Woodfords corner.
This is our go-to bakery in Portland. Such a great environment in addition to delicious breads of all kinds. Ask for a free sample of whatever they have on display... They'll give you a whole slice! Also their breads are made with organic wheat which is awesome. Their breads are also sold at Whole Foods!
Great bakery, cinnamon rolls are wonderful, and come: plain, raisins or raisins and walnuts none are frosted. Stickbuns and granola are also delicious. Can be a bit warm, loud when the bread slicer is running. Good for breakfast or lunch and the bread is simply wonderful. Check the website for what is being baked and if you arrive late your choice may be reuced. One final note, great kids area.
Had always eaten their bread but had never tried their sandwiches until today.. Got a black pastrami sandwich from the market house, was a little hesitant after reading what they put on it but DAYUM it was good ! Best pastrami sandie I've had yet, will definitely be back. Also, a young girl took my order and she was very polite and very sweet !
I love to visit Maine every summer, sometimes multiple times, and one of the things I look forward to the most is stopping by Big Sky. We bought a loaf of cranberry English muffin bread and it was our breakfast every day while we camped in Acadia. I can’t wait to come back!
A Portland institution and a great place to by pastries and breads of have a nice small breakfast or lunch. I really appreciate the free bread samples, they helped me out a lot when I was homeless just to have a place to get a free snack and cool down.
Everything was fresh and staff was awesome.
Consistency has really gone down hill recently. The young girl with the black hair can’t even bothered to put cream cheese on both halves of my bagel, it honestly only takes 15 seconds. Three stars is for the years of quality but recently been one star.
This is a charming bakery, located in a repurposed fire house in Portland, ME. Everything is fresh, wholesome, and tastes wonderful. They have an excellent variety of baked goods due to their weekly baking schedule. I go there every week of the year!
A wide variety of delicious handmade breads, cookies, scones and muffins baked on-site in an historic firehouse. Stop in for coffee and a quick breakfast snack and bring home a loaf for later.
There is no doubt that this building used to be a fire station. The majority of floor space is dedicated to the craft of baking. Historic photos of the building past line the walls. Fresh baked loaves of bread are stacked on cooling racks, a variety of generous samples are next to the register.
Great bread, but the individual working the register seemed to be upset at my existence, most likely because I did not wipe my boots upon entry to their establishment. In the future I will remember to wipe my boots, and if I am not scolded then I will return your final star to your review.
Love their cinnamon rolls and cookies.
Nothing wrong with the products, but a couple of the employees always make me feel as if they’re doing me a favor by making something appear that I’m paying for.
Also, can the tea not be put out where the coffee is? If there’s no running source for hot water, I know thermal canisters exist.
The plethora of seemingly ancient handwritten written DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE-type signs are an eyesore, for any management-type folk reading this.
What's not to love? You can smell the fresh baked bread a block away! We were there for breakfast and can highly recommend the pastries as well as the breakfast sandwiches.
Big sky is something of a love/hate relationship in my household. The convenience factor is high, as we live nearby and the prices are fair. Yet, as some others have noted, there exists what I like to refer to as an "attitude problem".
Again, the food is good, the bread and bakery items tasty, and the breakfast sammies are just right (the only real weak link here is the coffee, which is just passable). But it's rarely worth the aggravated sighs and consternation that one must endure to enjoy such offerings.
I'm not the type of customer looking for a handshake or a hug from local businesses. But c'mon Big Sky, loose the 'tude.
Great Bread, bagels, scones, & some cakes
Great Lunch, They need more Gluten free baked products! The demand is there! Everyone should eat gluten free! 🤗 …
I have shopped at Big Sky for almost 20 years, and their quality has remained top notch! The granola is fantastic, as are the corn bread, challah, fruit pockets and, well, pretty much everything!
I love this bakery and Cafe so much! Delicious, fresh milled flour. Tasty sandwiches and delicious treats! Awesome kids table for playing while you wait.
The Herbed Chicken salad on Raisin bread is to die for. Also the puréed sweet potato soup 🥣 Yummy 😋 Good price for half a sandy an a cup of soup! 🌸 …
Big Sky is a neighborhood bakery that has always hit the mark. Offering incredible bread and whole wheat treats, as well as soup and sandwiches, I love living nearby and walking in for a quick treat.
Very good breads and goodies as they have been since 1995
Friendly staff, great baked goods, sandwiches, and soups! Love that they have a offer a select bread on most Fridays.
Really fun to bring my little daughter here. She is fascinated by the big open kitchen and racks of "yummy bread". Everything is delicious.
Great basic soft loaf bread bakery, lovely scones, in a marvelous old repurposed fire station. Perfectly Portland.
Best scones in town! Love Big Sky! Always fresh, and staff helpful & friendly!
Best blueberry scone ever!
The bread is so good. You walk in and are struck by the smell of deliciousness
I enjoy their breads, however, when I tried the blueberry coffee cake the other day it was disappointing; overly sweet and dry. Will stick to their yeasted offerings.
Yummmmy! Super delicious breads and baked goods. Huge selection, nice atmosphere & friendly staff.
Amazing the best freshest breads ever, everything is hand made with love and is absolutely amazing, i highly recommend coming here, keep up the great work ladies i definitely will come back.
Had the cinnamon roll and egg sandwich with ham. Fair price for some serious portions. Definitely a tasty option.
What's not to like about fresh bread. The Italian panini was great. I also recommend grabbing a bag of English muffins too.
Theyre bread is excellent stop in for a half loaf to take home, a lunch sandwich, or even a cinnamon bun! Delicious!
Cinnamon rolls are legendary. Their other stuff is also great, but the cinnamon rolls are the real appeal in my book.
Soups, sandwiches, free buttered bread while you wait. Grab some lunch, a cookie and a loaf to go. Great turkey club if that is your jam.
My favorite bakery! Drove up, from MA to get some breads and the rest of their chocolate chip cookies!
By far the best bakery! 👌 …
One of the best egg sandwiches I've ever had and they were playing Houses of the Holy. Sweet place.
Its ok. The bread is fresh but not spectacular. Cashier rude and disinterested in being pleasant to customers.
Very Good Granla
Fresh, delicious baked goods, soups and sandwiches in an old firehouse. A little gritty around the edges, but cozy and a neighborhood staple.
Big Sky's baked goods are perfect every time, and the cafe is a wonderful place to get a cup of coffee and do a crossword

They have the best brioche and bread. Their soups are heavenly.
Amazing bread, bagels, and sweet goods. Love the feel of the space and general vibe
The baked good are phenomenal but the coffee is always just dreadful. Very weak coffee.
