Celebrated my 40th Bday, and I just had to have a cake from Denise’s for the occasion. Haven’t been there in years, and the cake did not disappoint. Everyone raved about it! It was delicious! Just how I imagined it to still taste. A bit pricey, but it was worth every penny!

6/3/22 UPDATE: I really hope they can find some new cashiers. The wait is so long. And God forbid someone in front of you has to place an order, you might as well pull up a chair and get comfortable. They needed to discount the sweet potato pies today because they were all burnt! I did buy some of my favorite glazed donuts today, which are always yummy! UPDATE: everything is still delicious of course. the only issue is they need more cashiers. the wait is too long. everything is delicious & the new restaurant looks great! it's bright & inviting.

Very nice black owned bakery in North Philadelphia. This place has been a legendary staple in the community for a long time and very well respected. At certain times of the week, the line can be long, but the cakes and pastries are outstanding

I've been going to Denise's bakery for over 20 years and this is The BEST Strawberry Shortcake Ever 🍰🤤 I would leave out early from home to get a slice before going to school or get a slice afterwards. Even after that horrible fire, this recipe and all the other goodies STILL taste the same...... Nothing has changed, still Delicious 😋

I had a wonderful birthday. Thank you for the beautiful pound female 1/4 sheet cake. I am enjoying my last chunk in a few minutes. Worth EVERY penny and more thanks to your wonderful baking. I’ve had two specialty cakes done here and they were both phenomenal. Just bring in a picture and the staff here will handle the rest. I appreciate the staff being patient with me as I modified my design to make it perfect! The cake was both beautiful and delicious and was quite a hit at my graduation party. I love their cookies, pies and pastries also. The apple pound cake, sweet potato pie and heath cookies are some of my favorites but everything here is great! Be prepared for a wait whenever you stop by. Hopefully they will be able to hire more staff or streamline the ordering process soon, but it’s definitely worth the wait

I previously loved this place. But the last time i purchased a cake from their it grew mold after being frozen, just less than a week after getting it. I bought the cake, sliced and put in the freezer, when i took out a slice four days later it had black spots throughout. This can only mean that they are baking and freezing there cakes before they sell them to you. Because there is no reason a freshly baked cake should mold that soon!

This place is an addiction. I love the glaved pound cake. The Strawberry short Cake is slamming . I get the chocolate chip cookies from here. I haven't had a donut since she recovered from the fire. Buy i will lol. I had to put myself on a schedule so. If not I would probably know all the employees by name lol. I'm so glad she's Back!!! I'll be there tomorrow for a fix 😋🤣🤣

I recently visited Denise's during a recent trip back home to Philly. I ran to Denise's lol and I assure you the pound cake is just as buttery and delicious as I remember from 10 years ago. They offer a variety of yumminess that will definitely satisfy your sweet tooth. Ice cream too. Street parking can be a challenge however, and they are located in a tough neighborhood where I stepped over a pile of human waste 🤢 The biggest negative I have are their operating hours. 9-5 for a bakery is confusing. Most pastry eaters want their danish, muffin etc with their morning coffee/tea. Right? I enjoy Denise's but the hours just don't make sense to me 🤷🏾‍♀️

Update: great baked goods (especially the pound cake) but not worth the wait. Covid protocols layered over slow--albeit-- pleasant employees have compelled me to take my baked goods shopping elsewhere. Good luck to Denise's. I'll try again in a few months.

I love Denise's, I have to come every year here for my Birthday cake which is June 23. Been coming for years now. Unfortunately the pound cake I purchased wasn't the best this year. It tasted different than I've tasted before. Was a little disappointed. Maybe it just was a bad day. My Cousin got a lemon chocolate pound cake in April for his birthday and it was delicious. I should have got that instead.

This was my first time visiting Denise's since the pandemic. Though I ordered and paid online, I still had to wait outside in line before being permitted to enter the store. The pavement did not allow the distance of six ft apart and it was a bit tight inside. The cake we ordered was the 9" Neapolitan, it was DELICIOUS and beautiful. Sorry I will include picture next time!

Been purchasing from Denise's for many years for holiday desserts. Always delicious and enjoyed by my entire family and guests. ThIs year however, purchased a pound cake, that tasted very stale. No density to this cake, which was very crumbly. Game changer, I guess it's time to find a new bakery. Had to throw this cake away. VERY DISAPPOINTED

Her cakes are always very good! I ordered 2; 1 for my birthday on Wednesday and 1 for my granddaughter who will be here on Thursday. Both were reasonably priced. FYI get there before 5:50, if you in line when security checks at this time you will be served. They close at 6. Mask up and social distancing is enforced hence the security.

The baked goods are great, but standing outside especially in the cold is not a good option. Please develop a new strategy, hire more staff or perhaps allow preorders. Pre-orders could allow immediate pick-ups so your walk-in customers can get into the bakery.

The service was ideal. I love that they are adhering to COVID precautions and going beyond. The door is locked and people are admitted allowing the store to keep customers at a four or five person group . Service is professional and organized. THE PASTRIES ARE WORTH THE WAIT.

I am giving a 5 because everything is superb! Pound cake with icing and the strawberry shortcake fantastic. I left a message and I was called back quickly so I could give my order. The person was very helpful. My order pick up was for 330. I was an hour away and could not get off work for that time, so I looked at the website snd it said they closed at 6. I arrived at 459. There was a line outside, but that was not a problem because I had a telephone order. The armed guard with the tactical gear at the door was a little disconcerting, but I could deal. I suspect he is a necessity. Mr officer is probably very good at the job that he has trained for, but customer service is not his strong suit. The abrupt manner made people a little defensive including myself when I realized that there was a possibility that I was not going to get my cakes because it was closing time. I stated the website says that you close at 6. His answer- I don’t care what the website says, we close at 5. I always like to give a solution- a better answer would have been- I am sorry about that, I will let the owners know about the discrepancy. I observed other ruff responses. I did not diminish the rating because of this because these are trying times and the officer is probably doing something he never expected to do- cake orders😀. As people like to say- u don’t know how it is. I do know, I have been in a customer facing role traveling around the country for over 30 years and yes, I am willing to stand out there for a day with him / just call 🏨😀

I love the chocolate strawberry short cake which is why I order one every year for my birthday. However this year I requested for it to be ready for pick at 10:00am so when I get there it could be just handed to me since the only allow one customer inside at a time. I waited over 30 minutes for something I paid for two weeks ago. I will be glad when COVID is over.

The food is delicious, they use real buttercream icing. The line was a bit long but it's worth it for the quality of what they make at this bakery.

Most of the cakes are good. I really enjoy the strawberry shortcake.Only problem with it is they put a piece of strawberry on the icing and if you don't eat it within a day or two it molds onto the cake. I found this out the hard way so I recommend that you eat the strawberry first.

It's okay but there cakes are two damn high and some of the worker's act to ignorate most of the time and when I ask for a special cookie tray all I got that they don't who is the decorators and its none a very good thing when running a bakery and plus I can make much more better cakes and my pound is much more better then Denies cake like seriously.

Ordered my cake 6/28 online pick up 7/3 9:30 am. Mother bday 7/3. Happy Birthday Mom, grandmom( or G'mom). I live in NC but I lived in Philly prior ordered from Denise's over 20 years for all bday occasions. Never had a problem but I knew when the baker came out explaining it was a problem. I had to change and rewrite my review. The owner called to make it right. Im big on quality & customer service. Her attitude was totally different than the baker. His attitude does not represent the owner. His attitude was take the cake or not. Appreciate the hospitality Kisha. The quality was already on 10.

Pound cake is amazing. Small peach cobblers are disappointing; just overly seasoned peaches in a little tin container, with a piecrust on top. Sweet potato pie was ok. Would definitely come again for the pound cake. Would also try their other cakes

I placed an order paid by credit card I tried to set up a date for pick up the system would allow it. I placed the order12 5 2020 I called 3 times everyday left messages every time 5 days straight not one return call .I check my credit card the charges were taken out the same day I order I have spent thousand s of dollars in the pass .and never received this type of bad service.as of today 12 9 2020 still have not returned my call. guess when you make it to the top, you forget where you started from. .they made enough money they don't need mine anymore. they don't even deserve 1 star .update I was contacted by the owner and she was never nice and understanding of why I was upset about the service and assured me that it will never happen again, when a company can admit that there was a wrong ,that makes them 2nd to none. they don't want to lose their customer. and I love her cakes I have been coming there for the last 20 years before the fire and after. this is why I change my star from 1 to 5

Denise's is one of the top notch bakeries located in the city. They make everything from donuts to birthday cakes. Everything is always fresh and delicious. be prepared to wait as the wait time can be well over 20 minutes if you're lucky. There is usually a line forming out the door. But there is also metered parking on the Street so bring plenty of quarters. You can purchase ice cream products there as well. They also sell single servings drinks such as milk, juice and water. Never been disappointed when buying my bakery goods there. Don't think that you will be either.

The cakes are delicious, I've never not had a bad cake. For that reason alone they get 5 stars. My mom and I have gotten cakes here for a long time. We also get cakes from places that sell Denise's cakes. The wait, however, is another story. I've never waited in line so long for just 1 item. I do like their new system. This time I called ahead so I could just pick it up, to save on time, but they said it wasn't possible.

Never been to the bakery. Purchased a small pound cake from Shoprite that they made. OMG...OMG...OMG THAT POUND CAKE! It was expensive..but now I don't care. I will buy it again and plan on visiting the bakery. Try it.

My experience yesterday literally had me in tears. I came to purchase a basic pre made cake and briefly explained what it was for not even expecting them to pay any specific attention to what I was saying, I was kind of rambling actually lol. But they listened to everything I said and realized how sentimental and important to me it was and did a little extra to customize it to what I wanted perfectly. I been coming to Denise’s for years but this specific experience made my heart so full and solidified me as a customer. Oh and the cake was absolutely delicious. Thank you.

My shower was yesterday and the cake was PERFECT!! Looked EXACTLY like the picture I sent and they followed the details also! This was my first time ordering from here & Definitely on point.. it taste even better, The fondant & icing didn't overpower the actual cake,! The price was perfect! I love the selection here. I don't come here often because I live in Delco but boy do I make excuses to get over here if I am even remotely close. I ordered a graduation cake and just wound up buying donuts and cookies and a cupcake...its a real set-up cause its hard to pick what to buy so you just start blurting out stuff.

I guess their pastries are good. But please be prepared to wait a hr for a donut. The line there is ridiculous and the workers move like sloths.. It's nerve wrecking ,but once you get what you came for I guess it's worth the wait I've had better, I'm giving 3 stars due to waiting -and service being slow. I had the cinnamon bun which was disgusting those chocolate chip cookies are good and so are the cakes.

I’ve been contemplating making this review for days. It is a tradition in my family to have denise’s at ALL of our family events because it has been in the family for so long, especially being from north Philly and now moving away. First of all, the customer service is terrible now. Yes it is more staff and diversity, but no one communicates. And a few of the women are very impatient. But most importantly, the delicacies are not the same!! I’m not sure if it’s because of covid slowing business but everything was stale(even the kids said it) from the donuts down to the preordered large pound cake!! I am just so appalled after 20+ years of business ...

Love their pound cakes and strawberry shortcakes . Downside is they are very busy and know it and need more people. I stop going because of the wait being way too long and their is always two people at the counter. A place knowing that they are busy like this need at least 4 people working the counter to get the customers in and out .

I have always loved this bakery, and I noticed the biggest thing PEOPLE had to complain about was the long wait in line. I was thinking, she is one of the few African American businesses who did not do the "mall thanng" I think we should be proud and grateful that a great bakery stayed in the "hood" so that we can also have access to fresh baked goods!!

Well Denise's is one of the oldest black businesses in North Philly and I do see Improvement sent the reopening last year. Her staff customer service is in proving to satisfied customers to make sure they get in and out without hours wait times. They still need improve on a time functionality. Other than that her food and her products are is still delicious and tasty.

I've been ordering my sons's birthday cupcakes for his class and a birthday cake for his party every year since he was about 3 or 4. He's turning 9 next month and we will be ordering again per usual. My son wouldn't have it any other way. Cakes and pastries are delicious and the prices are inexpensive. I recommend this bakery to everyone I know. We love Denise's!!! :-)

Great clovers (bread). The cakes are “ok”. They’re Strawberry Shortcake is a fraud and recommend you go anywhere else for it. I personally feel the nearby ShopRite’s cakes taste better. Be prepared to wait on line for service, so it’s not the place for you if you don’t have patience. (They never have blueberry muffins when I go).

Yesterday was my daughters birthday. I was unable to make in into the bakery due to my work hours all wk, however I walked in to attempt to purchase my daughter a cheesecake on a wing and a prayer. Paige a very nice well mannered young lady informed me there was only a small cheesecake left. I love all their cakes but My daughter isn’t a fan of icing. Paige went into the back for a moment and returned with the perfect size cheesecake that was about to be cut into slices by Najah another Denises employee. She gave it Paige to give to me for my daughter after hearing about my dilemma .❤️ I was so happy. These women went above and beyond to ensure above expectation customer service. They could’ve turned me away because the cake was SUPPOSED to be cut into slices instead they both made a 15 yr old very happy to have her favorite cake. I just wanna acknowledge Denises employees for their hard work. This isn’t just a job to them. They care about their customers needs, even the last min folks like myself. The cheesecake was awesome. I must say that the website doesn't do Denise's any justice. I believe that the world should know about all that is available at the bakery. The pies, the cookies, the cupcakes. I think that if the website was updated, Denise's Bakery will experience a level of success never imagined. The product is excellent, and with sufficient publicity they'll probably be forced to secure additional locations.

I haven't been here in years, liked the updated lighting and location renovation. Cake was still good but service poor, long lines and inefficient service. It's a Philly staple but I'm next time will use an Uptown bakery.
