Reviews of Four & Twenty Blackbirds
One of the best coffee spots I have been to. The pie is top notch! I wasn’t sure which one to get so I had a couple slices. The coffee was made fresh and was very good. The small cafe space was nice to dine in and had a cool vibe. The service was very good and everything was very very fresh. I wish I lived closer to come back and try more items.
I wanted to love this place- but I didn’t. I ordered a slice of the caramel apple and the coffee custard. The custard was perfect in texture but the coffee flavor was a bit off. I expected a richer flavor. The caramel apple I thought would be tart and sweet but it tasted like simple apple cinnamon pie. Not much caramel sweetness. I ordered an ice coffee which was also ok. Although not as great as I had hoped I would return to try different pies as they alternate pies. It is 6.00 for a slice and about 45 for a whole pie 🥧
Upon passing Four and Twenty Blackbird, you may not know what this establishment sold if not for the outdoor stand directing you to pie… but any and all locals around here know this is where it’s at. There are a handful of flavors to choose from whether you’re ordering by the slice or getting an entire pie. My favorite is the brown butter apple streusel—it’s layered with apples (not soggy) and whatever mixture that holds this pie together, and is topped with a crumble. If fruit/apple pies aren’t your thing, lemon chess, or black bottom oat are good too. If you’d like something more fragrant and floral, go for the lavender honey. It’s custard-like, creamy and smooth, and has a great melt in your mouth consistency.
You can grab-and-go or order coffee with a slice and stay for a while to enjoy the cozy vibes.
Four and Twenty Blackbirds is the gold standard for pies. They make the best pies from coast to coast. My favorite pies are the salted caramel apple, lemon chess, salted honey, pumpkin, and blueberry. You really can’t go wrong with any pie. Four and Twenty Blackbirds makes the perfect flakey crust. Pro Tip: Order your pie extra early for Thanksgiving as they will sell out.
Very cozy place with a huge wooden table for two persons. I ordered oat latte and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. I am intolerant of too much sugar but the pie was right amount of sweetness and great with freshly made whipped cream. The oat latte tasted excellent too. I could stay a whole day.
Hands down the best apple pie I have *ever* had. I had the caramel apple crumble pie and it was amazing. Go now!! Super cool, super chill vibe in the shop with great staff are a bonus! (pictured is the to-go slice we had to get for my friends husband!)
Unplanned but very happy that I finally got to try the famous @birdsblack! Coffee custard pie was so yummy. I love how it’s not too sweet, just how I like it! Coffee was not bad at all either given that it’s not a coffee shop. Would love to try their matcha pie next time. The pictures look amazing😍 …
Great coffee, pies and space.
The last day I went, all Salted Caramel Apple Pie would go to a charity to support Ukraine. Very meaningful
We have been getting pies, whole and slices, from here for years. The best thing about 4&20 is THEE CRUST! Housemade, flaky, with just the right chew, especially when the juices or custard permeates the pores, as it bakes.
Interestingly enough, one of our favorites is the Salted Caramel Apple Pie. It is a meal within itself. It is loaded with chunky, yet thin slices of apples and rivers of salted caramel flow through each layer. Baked, the pie gives an aerated layer of anticipation.
We also get the custard Honey Salt and Peanut Chocolate. They do change with seasons or holidays so always check. These are their standards though.
For events, it is best to order well in advance. They do have whole pies available but OFTEN sell out!
Service is swift, efficient and friendly. Parking can suck but it's Brooklyn so...double park and quickly grab your pie to go.
One of the best pastry offerings a cafe can have in NYC. The pies are simply amazing: a friend and I split half of a matcha and a honey cake between us. They're really delicate, creamy, and perfectly sweet without overdoing it; the matcha has exactly the right taste and color. The coffee is good, too.
The place is small and can completely fill up during peak times, so mind when you show up if you want to grab a seat.
Wowwwwowowowo!
Peanuts and Coconut pie is a must! Also Matcha is great. We tried apple pie and it was good but just okay. Overall amazing pies
Their salted Carmel pie will blow your socks off! The coffee is strong with the great ambiance for short stays to take a break. A hidden gem..
Honestly, if the pie was warm I might have rated this place five stars since I love warm pie. Salted honey was my favourite, even though I fully expected to love the caramel apple...the rhubarb too. I have their recipe book and make the apple pie often. But, it was just okay in real life. I think it needed to be warm out of the oven.
The ice cream is not really worth ordering. The prices were a bit high especially for a full pie.
Otherwise, the space is gorgeous and rustic. There’s one beautiful communal table with lots of natural light and many smaller tables. The staff was really nice.
Lovely atmosphere little pie pub in la Gowanus profonde — hipsterland thrives — I do *not* love their famous oatmeal chocolate pie but otherwise wish them all power
5.24.18 - Salted Caramel Apple Pie, never disappoints!
6/23/17 -picked up a Salted Caramel Apple pie, $40. Pricey, but worth it.
The location is cute and there are a number of seats and tables. It's a nice place to spend a mid-morning slice of pie...
***Previous Review - It's some darn good pies! The location gets great sunlight and natural light throughout the day. Definitely a good local spot to support. The pies are $40, which some believe is pricey, but the pies are really good!
BEST PIES!! my goto pies are salty honey, black bottom oat and salted caramel apple.
The whole pies have gotten more expensive ($42). But the slices are still the same price ($6) and still great. I usually purchase 4 different flavors to sample them. The flavors are seasonal.
My first visit here and I tried both the Matcha Custard and the Black Bottom Oat pies. The matcha was very smooth. Delicious! The black bottom oat was extremely rich. You have to love rich, sweet treats to enjoy this one. I could have handled it better had I not had another slice of pie to sample but it was an interesting creation.
I also enjoyed an Americano while sampling the pies. If I'm fortunate enough to visit again I'll go for the apple because it looked delectable!
Very good coffee. Pie looked good, but I went at the end of the day and wasn't interested in the few flavors that were available at that time. Two women at the counter. 1 friendly, 1 who could barely be bothered to open her mouth when speaking to me. Some people just don't have good public-facing skills. I want to come back to try the pie. I just hope she isn't there when I do.
Just the best pie place in the city IMHO. They have about 4-5 pie flavors you can get by the slice, and you can get whole frozen pies to take home and eat later. Some of my favorites - Salted Apple Caramel (yum), chocolate chess, lemon chess, pecan and they have seasonal stuff like blueberry rhubard pie! Slices are about $7. They also have brownies and select savories pastries. Well worth the visit, and make sure you get the cream with the pie slices!
DAMN! Oh my damn....
I usually hate pies and would never even think to try finding a pie place but this place has made me a believer. I need more, as I'm writing this all I can think about is pie. You don't need to read any reviews about this pie place, just come in and get some!!
But if you insist, I sampled the salty honey, salted caramel apple, and matcha custard. Each one was freaking outrageous, although the salted honey was just a little above the others. Regardless I can eat all three for the rest of my life.
I need more......
This is a great spot to grab breakfast on a weekend morning. I always find myself debating over what to get because the flavors are so good. A slice of pie and a black coffee are a lovely start to your day. Be careful with seating during peak times, this is a place where people claim their seats before they order. Although the pie is good, I would say that it’s overpriced. $6 for a slice of pie is way too much. A bake shop on 5th sells (better?) for $4. And $0.75 for whipped cream? This place is definitely a treat, they would get my business more if they didn’t charge so much.
The matcha pie was to die for. It is perfectly made, perfectly sweetened. Very rich matcha flavor. Tastes amazing with whipped cream. Came on a weekday afternoon so the shop wasn't too busy. It's located on a intersection which is easy to spot. Would definitely come back again when I'm in town to try every other flavor.
If you don’t know what Lemon Chess is, just get a slice and lose your mind. I get a iced red eye with oatmilk pretty much everyday and if I’m lucky a Coconut Crackle cookie. I like the people who work there and it’s never too crowded. Also, buy the pie. Holy hell. Buy the pie!
Pies = insane good quality.
Service = little sassy/mouthy.
Don't ask for things, just get your pie or pie(s) and go somewhere else with it.
Excellent pies of traditional and seasonal varieties. The house made whipped cream is delicious, and goes well on the side of any of their selections. Worth a try!
Amazing pies but they made a matcha, crépe cake that was mind blowing!
Want a massive variety of pie? This is the place. I went with the Peach Crumble pie which was solid. Steady flow of customers with minimal wait. Service was average but not pushy. Worth a go if your sweet tooth is kicking you.
I have a slice of salty honey and a carmel apple, they are perfect sweet and flavorful. The coffee is tasty as well.
This place has delicious treats, the apple bread is to die for and the blueberry oatmeal muffin, warmed up and served with maple syrup, is tasty, too! They're known for their pies, of course, but I'm saying you can't really go wrong with any order here.
I really thought it wouldn't live up to the hype but it was truly the best slice of apple pie I've had in NYC, actually maybe ever. I got the salted caramel apple and it was fantastic. I guess the only downside was that it was a little too small of a slice. Save your money and buy the whole dang pie! The atmosphere is coffee shop esque, people posted up on laptops and reading books and such. Quiet and relaxed. I've tried Martha's, Petee's, Blue Stove, and others, and this apple pie beats all of them. Those others were delicious, don't get me wrong, but this one won!
perfect place for an afternoon coffee and slice of pie. aple streudel was amazing
They make the best pies in New York. Had gone to pick up pies for Thanksgiving. Because of the occasion almost everything was sold out. Was able to get a few slices of apple pie and the whole bitter chocolate pecan pie. The apple pie is the best I have had in New York. The bitter chocolate pecan pies is also very good but just a bit on the sweeter side. If it were to be a little less sweet, it would also be right at the top with the apple pie. To make it the best, have it with coffee without sugar and it becomes the best pie too!!! Just so everyone knows, for Thanksgiving, the pre orders start 3 weeks in advance. If you want to pick them up at the last moment, then you need to be there at 8.00 am to stand in the line and wait for the store to open at 8.30 am. We got there in time and most pies were gone in 10 minutes of opening!!!
This place is absolutely unique and amazing. Some of the best pies you will find anywhere. Love sitting outside and having an excellent cup of coffee with a slice of one of their featured pies. Everyone is special but I am very partial to their pecan, hands down the best I have ever had!!
Get a whole pie, it lasts and you can share (if you must) The salted caramel Apple pie…phenomenal!
Favorite pie shop in NY hands down. Always try something new and it's high quality. Went with the Black Bottom Oat and a cappuccino today. Rich, filling and delicious.
Most definitely nyc's #1 master pie maker. I tried the cookie just to make sure it was ok ;). FANTASTICO ! LOL
Some of the best custard pies I’ve ever had. Adorable spot. I could move in here!
Amazing crust, buttery decadent filling. A tad on the sweet side. Have a light salad and indulge here after.
Visited from out of town, so we decided to try a few different slices. Got the lemon and matcha custard, and the salted caramel apple. The staff was friendly, the cafe had a cozy, welcoming feel, and the pies all tasted delicious.
Brooklyn has many bakeries, but this place is so special . if you are a person who loves sweet. It's your paradise.
Great 🥧 pies.
Fantastic pie! Can’t wait to return and try more - I had the pumpkin
What can i say, excellent pies, perfect for bringing dessert to any gathering!
Pies are delicious just not sure they worth the price. 3 1/2 stars
Love the pie here. Great spot to get a snack with friends.
AMAZING PIE!!! got the brown butter apple pie and lavender honey custard, and it was heavenly! Tbh, went to four & twenty because of dash and lily, and it was quite a trek. However, it was well worth it. Good apple slices, crumbles, pie crust, and wasn't too sweet. Good flavor. Dare I say one of the best pies I ever had?! Don't sleep on this!
Amazing as always. Fruit mixed pie and great coffee.mmmmmmmmm
Cozy spot. I liked the pies, but they were a bit too sweet for me.
Great pies! And my people were Pennsylvania Dutch. My Grandma made 4-5 pies for each special dinner (2-3 times a year). And other pies just randomly. These are almost as good as Grandma Susie’s. So close.
Nice local pie shop that's never crowded. A perfect rest stop near the subway (short walk to the R/F lines).
If you're coming for a slice, there's no guarantee you'll get the pie you want but chances are you'll get something good. Some pies (e.g. matcha custard) are only available on certain days, and there's no set schedule so it's a bit of a gamble. Everything I've had has been delicious. I have a thing for pie crust and the crust here is excellent.
Great coffee too. No laptops allowed on the weekends.
Best pie in NYC, also have great lattes and cute environment. Handmade whip cream is stellar.
This is a popular casual café in the neighborhood. Most of their pies are delicious, but the quality of their services and beverages are not consistent.
Amazing. Love the location, the big tables and the pies are delicious! Very friendly staff too!
Most delicious pies EVER! Seriously! Four and Twenty supplied pies for our wedding last October and we've recently enjoyed their seasonal strawberry/rhubarb pie via delivery. Their pies are always so creative and fresh. And the staff is always helpful and so wonderful. Can't recommend, enough!
Fresh pie and chic vibe inside, I like it here!
Best pies in New York despite slip in quality. I made special trip today to pick up Thanksgiving pies and they were sold out. ☹. To ease my disappointment, I purchased 3 slices of pumpkin, and because they felt sorry for me they threw in a slice of apple on the house. I appreciate it. The mission, not a total loss. Upon
reflection though, I think, quality considering the high prices, especially during the Holiday rush, has slipped. Off Holidays, the special seasonal pies are worth special trip.
We bought two pies and two slices - crust is consistently fantastic (like a crunchy croissant)... The filling was just right sweetness for me, and a little too sweet for my Japanese wife, but we both loved our pies overall.
We recommend the Salty Honey Custard.
Great and lovely pies in a not so lovely neighbourhood :).
These pies are amazing. We tried 3 different slices, salted caramel apple, salted honey, and black bottom oat. Personally the black bottom oat was my favorite! The oats were toasted and there's a few chocolate chip chunks inside there, phenomenal! The salted honey was the favorite on the table, like a delicious sweet custard textured pie with salt on top, so good! And then of course the caramel apple, all were amazing. I'll be back in a few years
The daily pastries are okay. Some of them are stale, others are pretty good, it really just depends. I ordered several pies here for my wedding and they were a hit.
Other than that, the service isn't grumpy so much as it is stuck up. I wanted to make this my go-to coffee place because it's so convenient for my commute, but the people who work there are unfriendly and the coffee isn't that great unless you get an espresso drink.
I'm actually not as big a fan of this place as many other people. I feel like their pies are fine, but not amazing. I've had some great pie in my life and these don't measure up. Part of the reason is lack of variety. They serve about four pies here, few of which conform to any standards, which is tough for comfort food. Sometimes you want a cherry pie, and not a salty honey pie. You can't get a cherry pie here. Sometimes you want a slice of apple pie with a butter crust where the filling is cinnamon-y and just the right texture and the crust is sort of half merged with the filling but half crumbly and delicious. You can't get that here. You can only get salted caramel apple, in a good but too-thick crust. This place has potential, and it's worth one trip, but it's not anywhere close to top pie places of all time or anything.
I'm sure thy have great pies, but they don't have *anything* for diabetics, like using Splenda or muffins with no sugar added. (A reminder that one out of ten Americans have some form of diabetes.)
Their stuff looks great and my friends love it, but I have to them eat -- nothing for me there.
Pies range from acceptable to extraordinary. Drop coffee should be avoided since they don't keep it fresh but the espresso drinks were quite good. As most has remarked, cliche of a brooklyn hipster joint, but if you like pie, good place to pass an hour or so enjoying a slice. As most remark, it is pricey. Regretfully, they don't understand the wonderful fusion of a hot pie and a scoop of just starting to melt vanilla ice cream - they have no way to heat the pies and the ice cream is served rock hard frozen.
Good prices, great coffee and pie. Place is clean and service was excellent. I will be coming back.
First, the pies are great; a little on the pricey side, but delicious. Seating is fairly generous with a couple of outdoor benches to relax on. Coffee, not so much, but it's OK, and it's nice to have with a slice of pie, and the savories are also alright. I might be picky about my meat snacks but I don't really expect a sausage pie to just be a sausage cut in half with some sauerkraut. The pastry was nice, but perhaps I just have a different opinion on what a sausage pie should be.
And, in yet another review, I digress. Overall, place is fine. Pie is nice. People are cool. Seating is ample. Plus it's a nice destination after getting my teeth cleaned/drilled at my dentist's office next door.
Yes, they have wonderful pies -- delicious especially when the season provides fresh produce (I'm not a huge fan of custard and cream pies). But beyond the obviousness of the delicious pies 4&20 also makes for a delightful spot to while away a few hours on work or relaxation. I have a wonderful memory of sitting in their shop with a hot latte watching the snow come down through the huge windows and feeling cocooned in a perfect little Brooklyn terrarium.
Various eccentric pies and flavor combinations in this shop. They sell whole pies or pies by the slice, but they often disappear quickly, so call and order in advance if you want something specific. Great for birthdays or bringing to the office to share.
This ice latte is so weak... taste like it’s just milk and water. Usually have the girls make it and they are anyways on point. They weren’t there today.
Oona gave us amazing service and both pies we tried were incredible! I love the vibes and flavors here! highly recommend!
Cozy place to have a slice of homemade pie. Nice variety. Pleasant staff.
Lucky for me, I live right down the block from this perfect pie shop. It is the perfect size with just enough seating to usually find a spot. It's popular and serves Stumptown coffee. You must get the salty honey pie. It is magical and I dream at night of purchasing an entire pie, going home, and diving in face first. But I like a clean home so I settle for one civilized slice at this cafe and just repeat as needed. Thanks for being here and never go away!
The pies are still worth walking 5 avenue blocks for, but the service has been going downhill for years.
Today I ordered a piece of pie, baked oatmeal and two lattes to stay. Observations:
* The staff briskly took my order, no warmth, just get it done attitude. Didn't offer whipped cream (like they used to).
* Unfortunately I've caught the barista pouring my latte in a paper cup too late. But at least they silently honoured my request to use a mug for the second one.
* No heads up that the oatmeal had to be warmed. I had to ask what happened to it as I was confused. They didn't ask whether I wanted it heated when they took the order.
* No smiles, no body language appreciation. I get that that's how some shops run their presence, but that's a big departure from what it used to be.
All of them are small things, but I used to come here for the pies, the coffee _and_ the service. From today, I may still occasionally come here but now despite the service.
Amazing pies! I haven't had crust like this since my grandmother's made-from-scratch pies. My faves are the salted apple caramel, buttermilk chess and chocolate malted pecan. Yum! (Not a fan of the salted honey though) Creative scones & muffins. Good espresso drinks & teas also.
We came here for dessert and I was very excited to try some pie after seeing this place on the cooking channel. This place definitely lives up to the hype! We had the apple pie and although it is a very typical dessert, I am not exaggerating when I say it is the best apple pie I’ve ever tasted! The crust is what made it so great, it is almost like a croissant. I wish there was a Four and Twenty Blackbirds in Baltimore!
I have bought the Lemon Chess and Chocolate Chess pies. Absolutely Amazing! With each bite the high quality ingredients used in each pie comes through clearly on your taste buds. Pies like this might have been common many, many, years ago but you rarely see exceptional pastry, or anything else for that matter, made to such high standards nowadays like these treats. Even if you're not that into pie, you will be after savoring the buttery crusts and scrumptious fillings. Crafted with old fashioned care. You will be hooked after just one slice.
This place is so gentrified Brooklyn they might as well fill their pies with the shavings of reclamied mid-century modern furniture and serve them on vintage 45' LP's. Like all things hipster, it comes with the good and the bad, so is it worth the hype? If you have a sweet tooth absolutely, their pies are sweet, oh are they sweet. That honey pie might as well be served with a side of insulin, but with a side of unsweetened coffee or milk I love it. The chess pie is more like a chocolate mousse pie, you definitely want each bite to have a bit of crust to balance out the sugar. Thankfully their crust is nice and thick. Decor inside is typical Brooklyn, heavy on the wood, mix of farmhouse and industrial and minimal wall decor. They have other baked goods which looked good. Is this the best pie in New York, no, but it's good if you like sweet things. Is this Brooklyn hipster nonsense? ...yeah but apparently hipster nonsense goes well with a side of pie.
Their pies are AMAZINGLY delicious! Shop itself is ok but basic with slices, coffee and tea. They also sell pie slices and coffee at the main branch of the Brooklyn library. Pies are expensive but so good. Salted caramel apple pie is fantastic. Get it to go for your dinner party but tell your guests you slaved all day. (They won't believe you made it, of course.) If you do want to make your own pie, they sell frozen pie crusts too.
omg… the pies are to die for and their berry tea is quite exquisite. would definitely be back for more–shoutout to the barista oona for her wonderful recommendations.
Tried the cranberry and Thyme pie today. Omg!!! Deliciousness x 100 !!!
Please offer this pie around Thanksgiving time. It was so mouthwateringly good!
You may think that this place is only good for their pies (or you may not, I don't know your life), but this is one of the few friendly coffeehouses that has bottomless coffee. Yes, that means free refills. And, if you order a savory pastry before you order a slice of salted honey pie, then you've had a full meal! Just tell yourself that, but only yourself, lest someone try to contradict you.
Very old-fashioned looking pie shop with some mouthwatering treats. The caramel apple is to die for. Right next to an awesome Chinese restaurant so we always grab dessert here to take home. Different pies of the day make it a nice place for a sueprise treat. If you want holiday pie, order well in advance as they are super busy because the pies are so good.
Hands down some of the best pie I’ve had in New York. The apple caramel, pumpkin and berry pies were delicious, especially with a generous dollop of homemade whipped cream. This is where I go to indulge when I’m back in Brooklyn. The staff is super friendly and the shop has a lot of room, outlets and wifi which came in handy when I had to send out a few emails before heading out for dinner.
Came for the Black bottom oat slice - wasn't in the ment that day, only as a whole pie. Had to take Salted caramel apple. + peppermint tea. Nothing special to remember about that pie, good level of sweetness, apples are tender, really loved the crust - flaky & soft, not crumby. Was disappointed that they served it cold without opportunity to get it warm (maybe only that day). Really loved the tea - a sort of handcrafted bag, which made taste rich, I rarely like tea bags. So, nothing special for me, but wanna come back for oat pie.
I tried a sample of their salty honey caramel pie at some food tasting event and was in love so I insisted on stopping in on one rainy afternoon to have a full slice. The first few bites were amazing, but it was a bit heavy for me. I tried my friend's apple pie and it was delicious, so I think next time, I'll have just that or insist on splitting the salty pie and order a hot chocolate, which was also yummy. Bonus: they serve fresh whipping cream!
Pie was very good, but it was cold. Wish they heated it up before serving
Sweet pies will astound you, so good. Savory pies are SO underwhelming here though. The crust on my flavorless ratatouille pie was the star but not worth my $6.50. Love this place though, great coffee and pie.
Apple Ginger Muffin was perfect! Not too sweet, just the right amount of ginger, not too overpowering. Coffee was warm, but not hot. Overall flavor was great! Employees were friendly!
Cute little spot. I can’t around 6pm and there were quite a few people working away. I was a little bummed they were all out of savory pie slices but had a piece of bird bread instead which was very tasty - full of nuts and seeds but light and fluffy. Pies looked amazing too!
There was such a commotion when the pie was served. Sorry, no Blackbirds but will Apple or Lemon do? It won’t be sixpence but what do you expect in Brooklyn? No dainty dishes here but the pies are good enough for kings and Queens.
The pies are good. The coffee is good. Can’t really say more than that. If you are in the area stop by. Enjoy a pie or two or three.
Great Stumptown coffee. Really nice people working here, never a non-smiling face to greet you. Of course, they are known for their pies, but they also have many other baked goods from homemade granola bars to scones and muffins. Wifi is free and there is usually room to post up for a bit. But, be sure to tip them if you plan on staying! Don't be rude :)
The pies are so good, especially Salty Honey, my family is not the biggest pie fans, this is an exception. Try it, you will love it! The staff is friendly!
Salty Honey Pie is everything. If I could survive on only that, I would. I just wish they did a gluten free one because I have to make a sacrifice to my digestive system everytime I eat it. Honestly though, worth it.
Unquestionably five stars, and one of Brooklyn's best little snack shops. The pies are uniformly creative and brilliant, with a nice daily selection that usually includes fruit, chocolate, nut, and old-fashioned cream. Prices are very low for the quality, the space is rustic and warm, and the staff couldn't be friendlier. If I lived in the neighborhood I'd be spherical right now.
Four and Twenty Blackbirds is the destination for pie. Some may complain about the limited selection but I love a place that specializes. And they do. The pies taste so handcrafted, I don't say homemade because its not a a home it's a place of business. Serious business, serious pies. My son's favorite Salted Caramel Apple, mine probably any of the Chess pies.
The pie here is amazing! I stumbled upon this place when researching pies to take to a Thanksgiving dinner. The pie shop is cute, but a little out of the way, so I usually pick up slices from other places like the Brooklyn Library or the McNally Jackson bookstore in SoHo. But if you do make it out to the store you'll find a greater variety there, including some interesting savory options. The Salted Caramel Apple is a staple, but the Lemon is amazingly refreshing in the summer.
Cute, hidden gem in Gowanus. Fresh coffee, delicious pies and plenty of spots to read the morning paper.
I cant say that I had many pies in my life, and cakes were never my fav, but a friend brought me honey salted Pie from here, and now I know I need to come here myself! Since I am not a big fan of cakes, my review is honest and without comparing. Honey slated Pie!
Wow the best pies ever...
A must for every pie lover!
They only serve about 6 pies at once, and you won't know till you get there, or call them.
And yes their Matcha custard is the bomb.
Out of the three pies we tried (Salted Caramel, Chocolate Chess, Buttermilk Chess), we loved Chocolate Chess. But the real winner is the Black Bottom Oat Pie. You can only order it as a whole pie, and trust me, it's totally worth it!
It's the place to be for pies. Small shop with a coffee house feel. Fresh pies smell really hits you once you walk in. The front area you'll see large tables to lounge while having your pie and coffee. Wifi is available as well. The pies we got was the salted caramel apple which was delish. Nice large grains of salt and sugar on top and great lattice work. The pie crust was buttery and flakey. The filling of caramel and apple was fresh ingredients and delicious. Also went with the honey pie as well. Great honey sweet flavor which stands out but my favorite was definitely the apple.
I enjoyed a slice of the salted caramel apple pie and the salty honey pie. Oh my it was delicious!! The salty honey pie won my heart. Paired with their delicious coffee i couldnt ask for more. I will come back and try ALL THEIR PIES!
This place is popular for its varying selection of generous slices of pie! I've never been disappointed. Expect a line, but don't worry as it moves fast. When asked, say yes to the whipped cream!
It's usually pretty crowded so I Ike to call a day ahead and get two or three whole pies to go, kinda pricey but they don't disappoint. I recommend the bittersweet chocolate pecan pie.
Great pies, with a good selection available by the slice. Some are traditional, others are new to me. Staff is super nice, too!
I love the pie custard but the flakey, buttery crush isn't for me. I love the 50 cent apples they have to the side, the coffee is good, and the atmosphere is all dark wood and dim lights.
The black bottom oat and some of their other more unique pies are very special. It's also worth trying their other pastries that they make. Only complaint would be the prices are very high.
Stayed in Brooklyn in December and found this high rated eatery on Yelp. Place was clean and had nautical design theme. Walked in and the friendly staff immediately greeted and took my order. Of course, I had to try a couple of items :)
First, the Crab Roll. I was salivating when I saw it come out of the kitchen. It was stuff full off real fresh crab meat. I also ordered the Crab Mac & Cheese. It took a little longer because they bake it from scratch but was worth it. Piping hot, gooey tasty cheese w/ nice crust, and again, filled with real crab meat (see close up pic). The mac was big enough to share for 2 but I was solo so more for me...lol. Only wish the order of Crab Roll came w/ a side for the price of $13. The mac was only $11 bucks.
FYI, they don't serve fountain sodas here but offer homemade lemonade or ice tea and artisanal natural bottle sodas. I tried this Pineapple Coconut Nutmeg soda and it was delicious.
Great place for some good ole fashion pie. Small, not crowded location with friendly staff. Not a good area for parking so it's best to walk or bike. Most popular pie is probably the salty apple pie (Must try)
When is comes to freshly baked pies this place is the best in Brooklyn. The pies are absolutely delicious! My favorites are apple pie, pear pie and peach pie. Try it!
Ice coffee is great to.
It might have been that we arrived later in the day and that I had very high expectations. It was okay pie but felt expensive (coffee creme and caramel apple flavors). The service was nice. It was a food goal; there is no need to go back.
Four & Twenty Blackbirds is definitely worth the trek out to Gowanus if you love homemade pie. This is the pie you dream about. They don't have much of a selection, maybe four or five but they're all fresh. Think of classics like apple and cheddar and then pies with lavender. It works. My wish is for them to bring back their savory pies. Would have loved to do the chicken pot pie dinners!
The apple cheddar pie is amazing! Such a cozy spot. Almost makes me yearn for winter: pie, a soft sweater and a hot coffee on a cold day? Perfection.
Pros:
- black-bottom oat pie (subtly sweet oat flavor complemented with a thin layer of chocolate)
- cute interior design
- fairly quiet noise level (good for patrons who want to work)
Cons:
- salted honey pie (I usually like honey foods, but this was a little off)
- cashier scoffed when I asked if he had any whole pies left (it was just a question, jeez)
Bottom line: The oat pie is worth going back for, but I felt uncomfortable in the shop. Getting some slices to-go might be the best option, since street parking is difficult to find anyway.
That matcha pie. *drools*
I'm usually a fan of everything green tea flavored, and the crepe cake from Lady M usually takes the crown for deserts. The F&TB pie rivals it. It's that good.
There are some nits that could be picked with Four & Twenty. Cash only. Hours that end early. I say fiddlesticks.
The pie is fantastic. I got a salted carmel apple pie and it was truly great. The star of my dinner party dessert. It even reheated well the next day.
If I ever need a pie, this is where I'll be going.
Ordered the chocolate pudding pie as a mother's day gift (2020). It was a hit, and the the hand written notes nailed it! Also much love and thanks to the woman who delivered it (May 11th). You helped my put a smile on someone's face that day.
Not really sure if it can get any better.
420 BLAZE, GO HERE.
Take the NQR or F to Gowanus and have some awesome pie. Have a slice of their salted caramel apple flagship pie or the one with salt and honey (the salty honey!!!!!!), they're amazing. If the number of reviews at this place doesn't pursuance you to trek out here, then peak their Instagram. Have a biscuit or something in their pastry cabinet that's savory, too!!
The tiniest bathroom is available and totally functional, and there's a lot of table space if you wanna do work here. Ask the staff for recommendations if you need help!
Frankly an over-hyped place. The staff is rude. Maybe it's a brooklyn thing to add a brooklyn charm. If only the pies were good. I tried their savoury meat pie. It was anything but savoury and I have no idea why a savoury pie had a sugar coated covering. It was just a big disappointment.
Might be the best apple pie I've had. The place is very comfortable to hang out, get some reading done, or just sip your coffee. Perfect place to be for a quiet day-off.
The apple pie is everything! Enjoy.
I love pie. I love 4 and 20. They are known for their salted caramel apple pie. But please try the lemon chess and the lavender when available.
Tasty pies, always something different and so close to the subway at 4th and 9. Place is great anytime to hang and read a newspaper. The custard pies are all different and the coffee is bottomless.
Amazing Pies. Terrible service. Classic pouty 20-something vibe. Go in. Get pie. Don't ask any questions, don't let the tour tired souls behind the counter ruin your experience. The food is magic. Accept it for what it is. Coffee is fine but stick to the cold brew if you can.
The salted caramel apple pie was delicious, but the matcha custard pies fell flat on flavor and texture.
Serious about pies and average drip coffee. Tried the black bottom oat slice and a Hijicha Custard slice both were great and the right texture.
Delicious pies. Staff member was super kind to me and my mom. Appreciate you!! Will have to come earlier in the day time to check out the larger variety of stuff.
**Ordered takeout during COVID pandemic
Food
*Salty Honey pie - Very good; the salt [provided on the side] definitely adds something special
An exemplar of what pie should be. Have tried many flavors, and have tried to reproduce many of the recipes at home. Brilliant all around. Salty honey is the most interesting and unique flavor, I think.
You won't know what you've been missing until you've tried one of their salted pie slices. Salty Honey or Salted Caramel Apple Pie -- can't go wrong either way. Your stomach will thank you.
Serving seasonal pies and unusual flavor combinations Four & Twenty Blackbirds has been our favorite pie shop in NYC. We are always buying an assortment of slices to bring to gatherings. We especially love their grapefruit pie.
Stellar pie, but note: As of July 2022, they don't offer same-day or next-day delivery, even though it says they do on the website.
PIE. Oh man the pie. I live pretty far from here but make an effort to come down and get this pie from time to time. If they post a pie on instagram be sure to get there early, it's gonna be gone!
The savory pies are a nice snack for walking around the neighborhood too!
Tastiest coffee in Gowanus and best pies in Brooklyn. It's really that simple.
The lemon chess is the best!
i come here for the atmosphere. it's a great place to hang out with a friend or two and eat PIE! yum. who knew you would find such an awesome little place buried so deep in gowanus. it's all about the crust for me - and they definitely know what they're doing in the crust department. high marks y'all!
Great pie! But awkward vibes in store... not the best customer service. I know working in service can be tough but no need to be rude. Just have your guard up!
The pies are super delicious. It can get crowded on a Sunday afternoon, but I've never had to wait for a seat. This is one my favorite places in Brooklyn.
I feel like when they first started they used to have a diverse inventory but these days, it’s like they never have a completed menu in store. Also, their listed store hours are wrong.
Pie. The best pie. If you’re wondering what a chess pie is, just show up and buy whichever they’ve made that day, and thank me later.
Phenomenal pies with inventive flavors. Pre-order is best, but don't hesitate to stop by and see what's available. You can take-out or eat-in.
raspberry oat bar is the best. marry me.
redhead barista is the best. marry me.
The pie here is consistently great. Tried the black bottom oat and strawberry rhubarb recently, would recommend both.
If you want pie, this place is definitely. It is worth the detour. Verities are always changing but seem to have it down to a science. It is a fight not to go everyday - if they were more conveniently located, I probably wood.
friendly, low key cafe. Can work m-f while enjoying pies, cookies and coffee
My favorite dessert spot hands down. So good, I had to but their cookbook too, which in turn left me even more impressed. Highly recommended.
OMG AMAZING PIES!!!! Dont take my word for it just go and try it you will not be disappointed !!! Thank u Melissa for the best pie I tasted in a long time 😊😊😊 …
Discreet and yet inviting once you step into the aluminum frame door, the pie store is a warm house of crumbles. An outpost that does well to offer a contradiction of lazy space and kicking pies.
Some of the best pie you'll ever have. All they serve is pie and coffee and they've been going strong for over a decade.
Another place that can’t be bothered to say “thanks” or “bye” when you call to ask a question. They just hang up the phone. Pretty good pies — typical hipster attitude.
The boyfriend and I went here for birthday pie, and were not disappointed! Great pie, good coffee, nice little cafe to hang out in.
Always a lovely pie eating experience. The apple is my favorite (tart and sweet and salty all at the same time)!!
It's a dessert hot spot in Gowanus. I highly recommend picking up their cookbook along with a slice of pie, while you are there. It has been a Thanksgiving game-changer.
Enjoyed decaffeinated cappuccino and chocolate chip scone. No indoor dining during Thanksgiving week.
The pie is delicious. We tried sweet potato apple crumble. However the ambience is lacking- extremely crowded.
Really interesting creative pie options. I love the decor and the minimalist idea. The pie is wonderful, and if I could eat pie everyday I would spend too much time here.
One of the best pies I've had. Salty Honey pie is just unique and super tasty.
Loved the brown butter apple pie! The filling was fantastic and the crust was simply phenomenal
Pie. Delicious, handmade pie. Salted carmel apple is rad, but seasonal specials are also so good.
Amazing pies, especially the salted apple caramel, strawberry, and their dark chocolate pecan pie may be the best pecan pie...ever.
Great pie, especially the coffee cream, and the space is cute. However, the service leaves a bitter taste at this otherwise sweet spot.
You know I have always been more of a cake person than pie, pie is my Husband's thing ... but whoah! This converted me to be a pie lover! I could have 3.14 slices every time lol
Good coffee. Good amount of space and not too crowded. Nice decor, solid wooden tables. Good tunes - playing Joni Mitchell when I was there.
My favorite pie in the city. They're known for their salted caramel but I love the custard pies the most.
Amazing pies. I haven't had a slice that doesn't taste heavenly.
Rustic, local bakery with great staff
Friendly folks like what you'd expect, but I honestly don't know what the big deal is about that salted caramel pie: it's okay, I guess, but nothing special enough as to be worth forty bucks...will try something else and update if warranted.
The pies are so amazing.
Consistently excellent pies, something you'll take out of town visitors to. Wish they'd be more adventurous with their selection though.
Absolutely lovely. Lemon Chess & Strawberry Rhubarb are legit.
my favorite pie place in the city. I travel from manhattan just to get the pie here. but sometimes it’s a bit cold.
I really enjoyed their salty honey pie. Terrific texture and taste!
High quality and affordable; reheating not available though
Chocolate Chess is the best.
The chocolate chess pie was the best pie I've ever had. Ever. And I've had a hell of a lot of pies.
Salted caramel apple was exceptional. Second only to my mum’s apple pie.
All of the pies I've had are completely amazing. The staff is incredibly friendly, and clearly takes pride in all of their products.
Cooler than cool.
Y’all should keep both locations open the same hours so I can bring home pie more often.
Thanks
The quality of the pies is worth every penny of the very expensive price!
great pies moist and tasty must try the salted apple Carmel
I rarely frequent this place, but every time I go, I'm always amazed by their pies. So good!
Most creative pies I have ever seen! Green Matcha pie is so far my favorite...
Awesome Pies.. After hitting up Smorg-As-Burg we made it over here. Well worth the detour and the cookbook is great.
Great place to spend pi day! Also they have a wonderful pie cookbook with great pictures we love
Tried the caramel apple. I was not disappointed. I hope to go back and try some of their other offerings, which looked just as good.
Great place for coffee, a slice of ridiculously good pie, or a whole pie for an occasion!
Really great pie. Really expensive. Have the baked oatmeal and coffee at breakfast time.
Best pie since my grandmother left us. I cried over the apple pie. It reminded me of hers.
One of my favorite places in the neighborhood; great coffee, amazing pie, very nice staff.
I love everything about this place. If I could create the perfect pie shop, this would be it. I just wish it were open later.
Without a doubt the best pie I've ever had!
Their Lemon Chess Pie is to die for ,they have great service and great pie
The most delicious salted honey pie youll find in the city
Best pie ever. Go and have one of each. Very good coffee to.
Their pie is like an essential vitamin , vitamin P - for pie. A must have on a daily basis.
This place is crack... only go there is you are willing to never buy pie elsewhere. Omg... the dough... ok gtg, I need pie now!
Waited 30 mins for 2 slices. The pies were good but doesn't worth the wait.
Why did they move from the central library branch location...i always enjoyed getting a peice of pie and my coffee light and sweet
Great pie crust - light! Enjoyed the salted & caramel apple pie.
Hands down best pies in Brooklyn. I would come here and eat breakfast everyday if I could afford it!
Good pies (a little pricey at $7 though), good coffee, and nice vibes
Best pies! My favorite is the salted caramel apple
Warm, Friendly and Cozy: everything a pie shop should be:)
Can't make it to the shop? They GrubHub.
Awesome pies. Limited selection sometime, hut others great place to hang out.
Great but expensive pies for pie lovers! They have different pies for everyone!
It's the best pie anywhere, not sure what else needs to be said.
Had salted caramel apple pie and rhubarb crumble. Both delicious
I enjoyed my generous slice of caramel apple pie and the crust was flaky.
Very likely to have the best pie in the city here. Nice space to sit and have coffee too.
Quite possibly the best oat pie I’ve ever had.
Great pie! I went for pi day and it was a bit crazy busy, but so worth it!
I would give it 4.5 if that was available. Pies were tasty, wasn't the biggest fan of the icecream.
We were served by chef's wife Gana who was warm, friendly, and shared with us many interesting details
Good coffee and friendly service. Worth visiting and need to try the pie next time
Pie heaven! Go with friends and share as many pie slices as possible. Unfortunately it is on the pricy side.
Amazing pies, great coffee, ambience is terrific and the staff wonderful! I will come back
Truly excellent baked goods in a lovely spot. It’s so rare to find a spot where everything is good!
Went in just for the pie and the carame Apple did not disappoint. Ate it before I could snap a pic.
Solid, decent pies, but unexciting flavors. Good if you're in the mood for classics.
Latte and a scone. Both delicious. Service was quick and courteous.
Selection is limited but pies are amazing! Highly recommend.
Amazing pie, one of the best things I have ever tasted!
Consistently great bakery place, kind staff, very pleasant experience.
The pies are a lil pricey but you kinda get what you pay for. GOOD STUFF.
Every single pie I've had here is absolutely amazing
Disappointed in matcha pie, pretty weak in the green tea flavor, enjoyed chocolate and lemon chess pies
Great pies!
A bit pricey but great pie, nice atmosphere and staff.
I came upon this place by accident. What a wonderful accident. The pies are delicious!
Best pie in this area of Brooklyn. A bit pricey, but every bite is worth it.
I just had the Brown Butter Apple and it was out of this world. really recommend it!

This place is the best. The pie is shockingly good and the atmosphere is wonderful.
Great pie, treats and a nice selection of tea.
Still some of the best pies I've ever had!
Life changing pie.. salted caramel pecan was divine.
Pie is good, not great, and no pie is worth $42.
Expensive but delicious pie. Not much else to say, go here, eat here, enjoy here
This place is delicious! Save room after dinner and head here for dessert!
Went for Thanksgiving 1st come 1st serve pie.
So so very Brooklyn. But dang it, the coffee and pie were superb.

Pie to die for
Nice place.
Deeeeelicious
Friendly staff and just really great pie.
A wide variety of homemade pies and muffins. First of all, I like the visuals. The salted caramel apple pie I had was delicious, but it was a little too salty. The pie skin is moist rather than crispy. The interior of the store was simple and nice, and it felt like the locals were relaxing on Sundays.
This place has the first foot that I prefer more for its filling than for its dough.
This is the first pie I've had where I've preferred the filling to the crust.
The place is quite modest. I tried the black coffee and the apple pie is very tasty..
Apple pie sweet and delicious. I forgot the price. The desk is large and perfect for working. The atmosphere of the shop is also nice and you can stay long. For $3, you can also buy ice cream and add toppings.
Perfect service!
Magpies to die for!
Small room, but comfortable, factory atmosphere.
I don't regret having crossed all of Manhattan to find this pastry!
Pie lovers come here, the pies are good, the people are good, the coffee is bad, but so what.
I really liked the apple pie <3 it's worth knowing!
