Reviews of La Mie Bakery
Trevor Hyatt
Very nice place for pastries, baked goods, and coffee. Compared to other cities I’ve been to the prices are very fair, great quality of food and service. A popular spot, a must visit spot if your in town looking for a brunch or meeting with friends.
I tried the salmon tartine as it was highly recommended. Was impressed and satisfied. Came with half of a Large avocado as well.

I've had a lot of pastries, and a lot of croissants, all over the world and in France, and man, La Mie is fantastic. Get there early so you can get your pick from the vast table of fresh pastries, from various fruit danishes, to croissants (plain, chocolate, cheese and spinach, and more), and lots of others. The pastry is flakey and cracks perfectly as you might, filling your mouth with rich buttery layers. Truly great, wish I could have some every day. Great pricing too.

Best bakery in Des Moines. Incredibly well made pastries, desserts, breads, and sandwiches. I've liked everything on the menu so far.
Everything seems to be baked fresh the same day. Be prepared to arrive early because most of the fresh bread is sold out by mid-morning.
Decent amount of both indoor and outdoor seating. Friendly staff. Plenty of parking around the back. Be prepared to wait in line for 5-10mins on a Saturday morning at the register.

We went to La Mie bakery in Des Moines, IA. We enjoyed coffee and pastry. Excellent crispy puffs. An assortment of quiche, sandwiches, lasagna, and croissant.
Maudie
I didn’t expect the place to be a sit-down. The atmosphere was lively. The line was fast. We got the caramel cheesecake, New York cheesecake, tiramisu and custard. They all tasted amazing. I would have to say the caramel cheesecake was my favorite.

Excellent. One of the best I’ve been to. Highly recommended. The omelettes are to die for, very authentic! The coffee is great too, they also know how to make a great flat white!
Jay “AbulJouj” Ghazali
We came on a beautiful autumn Saturday morning. The place was packed with long lines (but fairly moving fast!) at the coffee and bakery sections. All of our coffee and latté drinks were prepared to our full satisfaction, and the pastries were amazingly fresh and delicious. Didn't care for the noisy music at all maybe because of the high level of noise generated by the customer crowd. If you're looking for a quite and romantic place to spend with your partner perhaps I'd try weekdays and evenings. The restroom facilities are clean and tidy but could use some remodeling and modernization. Strongly recommend you pay La Mie a visit in the very near future! 😊

Whether it is the smell that brings you in from the street or your past experience that forces you to go back, La Mie is a place that you can’t resist returning to once you’ve been. From homemade pastries, rolls, croissants, biscotti, you name it, it is there … and the taste, texture and pure deliciousness will amaze you. Fill a box and take it to the office or stay and sit on the patio out back. They have many homemade, hot breakfasts to choose from as well. The quiche is to die for! If you do go, just remember at some point you must leave. All good things must come to an end unfortunately.

Wow! My wife picked this little gem as our first stop on a road trip to pick up something for breakfast. This place was fantastic! Was not expecting so much selection. Coffee was great! The baked goods were delicious and my omelet was so good that I didn't even need anything on it. No hot sauce, salt, pepper... it was so full of flavor! Would definitely stop here again next time we're passing through

I come to this place for the food and I stay for the people ❤️ Pro-immigrant and always friendly! The croissant breakfast sandwiches are my favorite, but the pastries and desserts are ALWAYS good with some coffee on a Saturday morning. It's fairly packed on the weekends, so prepare for a moderate wait. During the week, it's not too bad.
alyssa
came here for breakfast and both the french toast and omelette were 10/10! there is great outdoor seating and the place looks super cute on the inside. will definitely be back soon! :)
Deborah
The place has the exact same vibe as a European cafeteria... With enough choices of breakfast, pastry and bread. The service is efficient. I ordered a sausage and cheese omelet which was good but nothing super special. Coffee (latte) was great but that pan au chocolat was definitely what made it better.
I would definitely go back to discover more choices and maybe update my review.
Mikayla Beadle
Salmon Toast was out of this world!! Along with the matcha late! Basically everything is amazing!! Quick staff and nice outdoor seating as well!
Joshua Madl
I’m from KC and went here with my wife while we were visiting. OH MY - this place is great. I got a breakfast sandwich an oat milk honey latte and a few bakery items. Everything was delicious. Someone who seemed liked the owner was very present and active visiting tables, answering questions, and bringing out food. Overall a really great experience on multiple levels.
Amanda Lee
Always a delicious experience at La Mie. I haven't had anything I didn't like. Thank you for being in Des Moines!
Truman Gerholdt
Ok cute Little bakery in a cute little part of Des Moines. I would definitely go here and grab a bunch of pastries and a coffee and sit and chill. Lots of options of pastries. Lots of different sandwich options. Lots of different drink options. I definitely recommend going here.
Gina Miller
Fantastic breads, they bake about any bread you can think of and the sandwiches are delicious.
The breakfast breads, rolls, etc are so delicious too.
You can eat in or take a box home with you!
Kirsten Skeehan
Excellent bakery and Cafe. Can be super crowded on weekends. I think they're croissants are better than their Puff pastry.
John Hsieh
Hmm... can't believe I haven't reviewed La Mie yet... hands down the best bakery in Des Moines. My favorite item is the ham and cheese croissant. There always seems to be a line at the register and there never seems to be enough tables during weekend brunch. However, patience will pay off as stuffing one's face with La Mie pastries will make every bit of cheating during cheat day worth it. Parking can be difficult, so be sure to look for parking in both the front and rear lots.
Andrew Lietzow
Always outstanding. We like all of the pastries, for sure, but we love their quiches to go! Excellent!
Marcus Jackson
Went to La Mie for the first time today and really enjoyed our breakfast! I even tried avocado toast with my daughter, and the hype is real, it was actually good, a nice clean taste. I would definitely good back and recommend this place to others. If you buy a croissant from the stand inside, dont forget to ask them to warm it up for you.
Sydney Thompson
Delicious pastries and high quality espresso! The wait for a table was short and staff members were kind and friendly. We will definitely be back!
Anna B
Best fresh bread in Des Moines 🍞🥐🥖 …
Brian Bopp
If it's superior baked goods you're looking for, this IS the place! It's always hard to choose from the vast array of sticky rolls, croissants, and fruit filled danish. Our selections this day were delicious, as always. The vibe here is very lively and on the loud side, which is not our personal preference. Plenty of parking behind the building. Bon appetit!
Brandy Whitney
So delicious! Lot's of food and great coffee.
Tyler Ruble
Grabbed a triple chocolate marscapone cheesecake and a berry tiramisu to go. Wow. There is some serious talent behind those two creations. Neither really reminded me of their namesake, because they were so much better. From the clearly homemade berry sauce that was sweet and delicious without being syrupy to the marscapone cheesecake that was somehow incredibly rich while also being light instead of heavy like “normal” Cheesecake. Everything about both was incredible.
Jessica Hall
Not only do they have amazing fresh bread and baked good. They also offer soup, salads, sandwiches, and other breakfast items. My personal favorites are the squash soup, house salad, and macaroons. Always get a small box of macaroons.
Jeremiah Allen
One of my favorite places for a pastry treat! Go early to get your favorite. Mine is the ham and cheese croissant.
I like the newer manned pastry selection station. It's nice to have a worker there if you have questions about an item.
Emily
Spring 2022 update: they've started protecting bakery items by individually wrapping or not allowing self serve for pastries, with pastries behind glass, good protection from germs and a likely covid-inspired change.
--
I have never been to another bakery with both the assortment of pastries and desserts that La Mie has or the quality. The pastries are truly divine. La Mie means something about the inside of bread, and they deserve the name because WOW! My favorite is the blueberry danish.
They have great coffee and espresso, maybe slightly pricey for Des Moines, but definitely not unreasonable. They also have hot food options for breakfast and lunch and outdoor seating during nice weather.
They are usually jam packed at breakfast time, you might have trouble finding a seat.
Rosa Garfield
Everything I've tried has been delicious, great healthy options. Not the friendliest of service but they make up with some bomb pastries.
Daniel Wray
I will always patronize a French bakery if I can find one where my travels take me. La Mie ranks highly in the French boulangerie/deli category for me. Great bread, pastries and excellent breakfast and lunch options. Maybe dinner too but not sure. I'll be back.
Todd “Toddtheplumber” Labus
Love this place. Everything is great. Can’t beat this place for breakfast and lunch. Gets a lil crowded but when ya good you’ll have that.
Nicole Roberts
If you live in the area you most likely already know about this place. Get there early! They run out quick! LOVE the food, coffee and general vibe of this place.
Erin Boote
Always delicious pastries! Our favorites are the chocolate brioche and rhubarb tarts. Glad to see they are protecting their employees too <3
Gail Olson
I had breakfast here which consisted of scrambled eggs, potatoes, asparagus, mushrooms (yuck) and cheddar cheese. It came with one slice of buttered toast. Coffee is self serve - not hot enough for me.
Madeline Summers
So many fun tasty selections! Seems like a great option for dine in as well as Togo food.
Madelyn
I enjoyed the food. Wasn’t as impressive as I hoped. Not super friendly. Could be cleaner. Very fast service and many options between the bakery and cafe. Not a ton of gluten free options but they were very clear verbally about what was gluten free. We did not like the Quiche, it is not suppose to be made in a pie crust. It is open early and I would be willing to try again. The omelet was great.
Michael Rutt
Great bakery. Everything I had was amazing and staff was really friendly. Worth the visit
Fernando Quijano
I was surprised by the high quality of this bakery, the friendly and professional staff, and the variety of breads, pastries, and treats. Nice atmosphere. You feel like this place is run by people who care. I highly recommend it.
Steve P
What a delightful and delicious eatery. Every time I travel I'm always looking for a change of pace and La Mie did not disappoint! Delicious pastries, selection of breads and rolls, the dessert cooler had me in a trance and yup..... I couldn't resist. My fiance had the smoked salmon omlet, myself omelet, had the sausage and mushroom omelet. We both grabbed a sandwich for lunch later and I would nearly kill for another chicken salad croissant. Don't miss this one or you'll regret it.
Rachel
The cheese on their breakfast pizza was good. They have a wide assortment of baked goods to choose from.
Moe Keo
The food tasted alright, they should put the pastries in a showcase. I saw a lot of flies flying around
Whitney Hundertmark
I have a tradition with a friend who moved to Boston, that every time she flies back to Iowa, we have to go to La Mie. She voluntarily has stopped eating excess sugars and gluten as part of her lifestyle, and normally doesn't break this trend. This is the place that she always says "screw it, this place is amazing. I'm going to eat whatever I want"
We get a few pastries and coffee and it's always delicious. I have never tried anything I didn't enjoy and I am not surprised when I've gone in later on the day and they are almost cleaned out! It's a wonderful cafe and the sandwiches and soups are great as well. I couldn't finish my meal because there was so much food, but I wanted to keep eating it was so great. If you're looking for a cute, casual date spot, brunch meetup with a friend, or just need to eat a ton of pastries and love every minute of it, this is the place.
archivefever123
Great sandwiches, but terrible croissants. The texture is all wrong. Very disappointing. There is nothing French about the so-called croissants that they sell. I'll likely try some of their other pastries.
Victor Stuber
Great place for baked goods and coffee. They really need more seating though. The layout inside is highly efficient.
Ondine Morgan Garner
Wowie. Their selection of pastries, both sweet and savory, was HUGE. It was so hard to choose which kinds to get. We ended up getting the pear puff pasty and it was DIVINE. So good in fact we went back inside and ordered another pastry. This time it was the blueberry danish. Not as good as the pear puff but still incredible. We also got a salad and at first were a little worried because it was pre-made but oh my word it was so good. We got the smoked salmon salad. Didn't try any of the breakfast food but it looked great.
Tim Harris
Excellent little French bakery. I strongly suggest the chicken salad on a croissant, it is just heavenly.
Jackie DeMolee
I visited for a quick in and out. I purchased a small baguette and a small package of macrons. The baguette was good, but the pre-packaged macarons were not. The filling was tasty, but the cookies were very hard and dry. Sadly, these were the worst macarons I’ve ever purchased anywhere.
Mary Peterson
4 of us were on a motorcycle trip. We were looking for a place to eat breakfast. Got off the highway and found you. We were very pleased. We all had omelettes. They were so delicious. Great place.
Matthew Whittle
The pastries and cakes are top of the line; I think the best I've ever had!
Judy Archer Brucker
I was put of by the sign that said 45 min time limit for dining. I had a business meeting. Great place for carryout though.
Katie Hall
The best pastries in the Des Moines metro. So many fresh options, great service and a clean space. Love their quinoa breakfast platter, blueberry custard pastry and ham/cheese croissants. So delicious!
Mike Davis
Short wait for great food.
Fawad Baig
Great experience one of the best brunch spots in Des Moines, can’t believe I’ve never been here prior to today
Y BAE
Very kind and friendly people and amazing taste of pastries! Healthy local bakery in Iowa
Michael Bell
La Mie is the hole-in-the-wall dining location you were looking for. La Mie is quaint, quiet and offers a modern chic style perfect for breakfast or lunch occasions. La Mie is a small shotgun style bakery with limited seating for the amount of business they receive. La Mie is clean and has a bakery with options of homemade pastries and breads. Their menu also include sandwiches, salads, omelets and more.
Service at La Mie was pleasant particularly because I chose to visit during their busier times.
Pricing at La Mie is just above average for other locations of its kind in the area. The food was great and filling. Certainly will visit again and would like to see this business grow.
Lindsey Stubbs
The food is always amazing (especially the croissants!) and the staff is incredible. Recently, I left my wallet there by accident and they kept it safe for me while I was none the wiser. It's a great place with great people.
Scott Hayes
Such a nice bakery. Very authentic French pastries. Well above average coffee and a nice outdoor patio to enjoy the treats. We always stop at La Mie when in Des Moines
John T
Really well made and delicious pastries and bread! Highly recommend.
tim
Absolutely love the pastries and the French ham sandwich
Lin Lin
Pretty decent bakery and breakfast in town. Cheese cakes are amazing
Nickie Bryant
Pastries, bread and a cold grab and go section to start. Hot breakfast and lunch selection made to order. I had a pretty good quiche with lots of cheese. The Nutella pastry was great!
Frannie D.
Delicious French pastries and treats.
Michele Carlyon
Tasty food! Parking is a big of a challenge, but no insurmountable.
It's located in a little strip mall so you have to know where you're looking. Surprising little find.
Leonard F
Eh, food was decent, service was rough. Our servers seemed pretty rude. Felt like we were an inconvenience to them.
Ravus Caelum
I am really, really glad that i don't live closer to La Mie. I would weigh seven hundred pounds and be perpetually broke.
Emily Hayden
Hmmm. I've only tried once, so I'm willing to give them another try. The "only stay 45 mins" signs at the counter and posted in every booth are a bit unwelcoming. Not many pastries when I was thererich desserts and packaged items. Perhaps I just went at the wrong time of the day.
Amanda K C
Very delicious everything! Great place for lunch with friends. Healthy options. Very busy.
Chris Gibbons
La Mie is the best bakery in Des Moines. Delicious pastries, sandwiches, and so much more.
Mike G
Pecan rolls are great. It doesn't get better than this! You really can't go wrong with any of the pastries.
Mary O'Malley
Delicious food and amazing pastries! Very quick and friendly service in a clean and upbeat restaurant.
Steven Beisswenger
The best bakery in Des Moines! Their brunch menu is amazing as well! Do yourself a favor and get to La Mie early to get the best treats before they sell out daily.
Felicia
A DSM staple. Incredible pastries and food in a great little neighborhood.
Raymond Kent
The cherry Danish was very good. The croissant was huge. It was good also, and would be a 5-star if it were softer with more of a buttery flavor, but I'm nitpicking. You won't be disappointed if you eat here.
Wayne Burfeind
This is a great place. Bakery items are wonderful. Breads, rolls, seasonal fruit danishes. Staff is very attentive. We will add time to our trip to swing by here and grab some goodies
John Perry
Great breakfast pastries and fast savory breakfast egg dishes.
Dean Meyer
Visited Des Moines last week & ate 3 times at La Mie Bakery for breakfast & lunch. The Best. Make a mint if they were to franchise especially in California.
Tamra Roberts
This place is heavenly. If you like baked goods that are not too sweet, this is your place. The place was packed when we visited on a Saturday morning, but it was worth it.
Rauthi P
Loved it! So good!!
M M
One of the best bakeries I’ve been to, and I go to a lot. The type of place where you get 3 things for yourself and 3 for your partner and you are sad you didn’t get to try more things. We went twice on our visit to Des Moines; the first time because it had good ratings and we like good bakeries, and the second because we couldn’t help it, even though it wasn’t close to where we were staying. We tried many dishes—cinnamon roll, pecan roll, onion pastry, tartine, breakfast sandwich (ask for it on ciabatta—out of this world), and maybe others. All were incredible—as good as anything I’ve had in Chicago, New York, Paris, or San Francisco.
Andrea Fox
Absolutely, hands down, one of my favorite restaurants in the country, if not the world. However, the recent switch from regular potatoes to sweet potatoes with breakfast entrees is baffling. I’d be more open to the switch if you seasoned the sweet potatoes in ANY way. The creme fraiche was such a perfect pairing with eggs and your savory potatoes, why did you switch???? Here’s to hoping you switch back, or at least season the sweet potatoes. On a side note, I miss the way you used to shape your croissants with the corners not touching. The way the butter caramelized and crisped the edges and bottom was perfection! Now that you cross the corners like a pretzel all of that beautiful flavor is lost. You’re still one of the top French patisseries in the country and I will forever favor you but please switch back these few things......🙏 please??
Kathryn Standing
Best for classic french pastries. Get the croissant, and everything else that looks good, but most of all get there early before it's all gone.
Thomas Buffard
The pastries here are amazing and not too expensive. Their croissants are really big and taste amazing. The coffee is also good. I would bet breakfast here everyday if I could. It wasn't too busy when we went, probably like a 10 minute wait. The parking lot is small so it may be hard to find parking.
Russ Bickett
Everything thing we have gotten at La Mie has been wonderful. Sandwiches, pastries, breads, etc... Great place to go sit and enjoy what you purchased.
Heidi Janecke
What a fabulous puff pastry. The service was fast and kind.
Zachary Peters
Sometimes I visit other bakeries just to reassure myself I've already found the best there is. La Mie is the benchmark, the pinnacle, the casual perfectionist. Stop settling for imitators. Don't wait. Take a week. Try it all. Okay, maybe 2 weeks. Do yourself a favor and start with the Almond Croissant.
Laura Lewis
I died and went to heaven!!! So yummy!
Clay Johnson
Really cool atmosphere, very nice staff, but the real stand out is the food. A fantastic and trendy bakery. It's the sh*t.
Hank Stevens
My previous review remarked on the great food and terrible coffee. Good news is that the coffee has improved!
Donna Parks- Huck
Friendly staff and great selection of pastries and sandwiches!
Sarah Little
Solid baked goods Modern eatery. Excellent croissant and puff pastry. Beautiful cakes. Great service, friendly staff. Salad ratios off a bit. Too many toppings not enough greens - if that can even count as a deficiency. Interesting drink options. Go, just go and give it a whirl.
Justin Chau
Tons of freshly baked options at a reasonable price. We weren’t as impressed with their coffee, but the pastries themselves are delicious. Chocolate croissants are a must, but plan to buy at least two or three items if you’re passing through for the first time, as they’re all uniformly good.
Monica Flanery
My croissant was buttery, flakey perfection. The caramel latte was divine, and beautifully crafted. The vibe and atmosphere were sublime. Loved every aspect of my visit!
Jane Curl
Its Michael, the Guy @ la mie!
O yes, the Absolute Best way to start a new day!
Rest and enjoy #4 😊 its my favorite! …
Isaac Young
My visit to La Mie greatly enhanced my afternoon.. loved this spot. Will come back!
Frank Cenatori
Wonderful food, friendly staff, great atmosphere
Amy Meyer
Great food. I love the macarons.
It was hard to order due to the noise level with the plastic barrier and the clerk's mask. I stuck my ear below the barrier to hear.
Laura Beth Vander Ploeg
Beautiful food-- I couldn't decide on a pastry for a solid 5 minutes because it all looks so good! Fresh squeezed orange juice and yummy coffee complemented my eventual decision of an almond croissant. Only complaint is that it's often hard to find a seat during peak hours 😁 …
William Murphy
This is one of my favorite places to eat in Des Moines. The pastries are absolutely the best. They are fresh and the demand is evident. They have very good lunches. When we would visit my mother, this was one location that made here happy.
Kathleen Langlois
I walked in and was overwhelmed. The pastries are exquisite. The atmosphere is delightful. The food is fresh and so many choices. Came upon La Mie as we were traveling through from Kansas to Wisconsin. We are going to make this a regular stop. I had to pinch myself as could hardly believe a place like this even existed.
Abigail Lee
If you want a authentic pastries that are fresh and delicious you have to come here. Also, there are some cute shops in the same area. If you can't find parking in the front, you can park in the back. It's also a great place for breakfast and lunch. I recommend the avocado on toast!
Becca Robbins
We visited this wonderful bakery with my family the week after Christmas. It was busy, but the service was quick. The bakery is full of delicious items, it was hard to choose just a few. What impressed me the most was when I forgot my wallet at the bakery. Being from Minneapolis, the idea of driving back to Des Moines to pick up my wallet was frustrating but seemed necessary. I called the bakery, and they were so kind, they even went as far as to send me my wallet. I was so thankful for their customer service and kindness toward me. I would recommend this bakery to anyone!
Katie True
Stopped in for the first time and was shocked to see the large crowd and menu! We had a delicious lunch and grabbed a chocolate truffle cake for a birthday later that night (which was a hit). There were many people there but you would never know by the efficient service.
Gabby Smithman
Wow. I had heard that La Mie wad good, so a group of us girls decided to try it for lunch. I had the bacon spinach omelette with a salad. The omelette was perfectly cooked and delicious, I just wish the spinach was a little smaller because it was hard to cut. The salad was AMAZING. The dried cranberries were a perfect sweet companion to the salty cheese, and the dressing was just the right amount to enhance the flavors.
The decor was super cute and classy. We were a little unsure of how to order the pastries, but the workers were very helpful. I look forward to going back!
Leah Dawson
I haven’t even left the restaurant yet and am leaving a review because this is literally one of the bests breakfasts I’ve ever had. I don’t live around here which is bittersweet because I’d weigh 800lbs if I did but I’d be full of delicious, fresh pastry.
Ann Staudinger Knoll
The bakery selections are set up in kind of a buffet style, which means that you may have to be quick on your feet to grab the last scone. Everything was phenomenal! We also got actual breakfast dishes as well, and the french toast with berries was delightful!
Jack B
The food here is always top notch, however; the staff could be more personable. I suggest smiling more, greeting your customers, and saying thank you. Not sure who owns the tables outside but they are in terrible shape. Never clean and always off balance.
Sam DeWall
Great lunch spot! Lunch was delicious and very quick to the table. The macaroons we got after eating were soooooo good. Treat yourself and get some! You won't regret it. My only criticism was that it is a bit confusing whether it was a self service or served restaurant.
Emily Shafer
A delight to our taste buds every time we visit. Love the asparagus brie omelette! It can be quite busy and noisy but the outdoor patio seating solves the issue for us in nice weather.
K Luckett
Amazing Everything!!! The bakery, the menu, the atmosphere, everything about LaMie is great. Currently my favorites are the vegetable scramble, lox on toast, omelet with black beans and quinoa. Pick up any danish and prepare to sing songs of joy ;-). I can't leave without a pecan roll to go. Get there early, especially on Saturday, or your bakery selection might be limited. Enjoy!
DeLoy Bitner
Wonderful beef and cheddar sandwich. Great bread and high quality ingredients. The New York cheesecake was creamy and delicious. Great place for lunch.
EZ Eats World channel
Almost there. Best in Des Moines, by far. But lamination can be an issue. Stay away when the school across the street lunches. Can get busy.
Neil Franzen
Such great bakery. Their croissants can be had at the Des Moines downtown farmers market as well as in their restaurant, and they don't disappoint. The bakery is a busy place, and procuring a table can sometimes be a challenge. If I had a large party visiting from out of town, I'd suggest having someone pick up the bakery and take it to go. French breads are also outstanding. A word of caution to peanut allergy folks: I picked up a Black and Tan brownie from the dessert case and it had unmentioned peanut butter in the frosting.
Megan Ross
I've been twice and had terrible service both times. The first time I ate in the cafe and ordered quiche from the refrigerated display cabinet. They offered to heat it, but brought over the wrong flavor and seemed irritated I wouldn't just take the one they brought. I did take a bite before realizing they served the wrong one - but it's not what I ordered.
The second attempt was for a pastry to-go on a Saturday morning. The gal behind the display cabinet either spoke no English (which is fine! just indicate as much or get someone else to help) or was unable respond appropriately in social situations. She wouldn't look at me, didn't actually speak to me, and repeatedly (wordlessly) waved at the display case when I asked any questions. I wanted to know what she recommended as I'd never ordered pastries here and didn't know what I was looking at. I was excited to try something new; the French names didn't help me out much as far as making a selection and there were no descriptions. I'm an upbeat and smiling person who merely wanted to know something about the goods I wanted to purchase. It was rather bizarre and I left empty-handed.
Shawna
Not a bad place for pastries and coffee.... Staff can be a little snotty but for the most part it's a good place to go. I ordered the French toast on separate occasions and one time it was absolutely delicious... They other time the bread was different and burned.
Ali Erickson
Food is excellent. Service sub par, but not a deal breaker! A bit hard to find, and the water dispensary is warm offering no cold or chilled water. Very clean establishment, but a bit hard to pin point the dynamics if you’ve never been. The food made The whole experience! Loved it!
Patrick Dahlen
Always a great place for dining and conversation. The struggle is trying to resist their excellent home made pastries 😁 …
Antonio Vega
The baked goods are amazing. Have not had any thing from La Mie that I didn't like.
Only con is the space is a little small for the amount of business they do. It can feel like people are hovering over the top of your waiting for your seat. Not the best place to meet a large group.
Jake Thompson
Had a beautiful cherry danish and a rhubarb puff pastry. Was delish with some nice coffee. Had to get pastries to go!
B Rice
Had the Brie sandwich and loved it!
Karl Thompson
Great variety of bakery goods & sandwiches.
John Rupe
Good food overall. We had salmon and avacado open faced sandwich which was very good. Our granddaughter had a Brie sandwich which was fine, but not exceptional. Has an uber-hip feel, but the staff was nice of you talk to them. It is the Midwest afterall. No wi-fi.
Drew Apple
Long line but well worth it. Great baked goods!! You basically just grab a box and fill it fill of all the baked goods you desire. (You can also just grab a plate for one or two things to eat in house. They also have drinks and some cooked hot food options for order.
I recommend the créme filled almond roll.
Jenn Parker
Simply wonderful... I buy several days worth of breakfast when I make a trip to La Mie. Then enjoy all the jealous looks from coworkers when I eat my breakfast each morning. The last time I stopped in, they brought out ciabatta fresh from the oven. Only part of the loaf I bought made it home. I couldn't resist tearing off pieces and snacking on them all the way home. It's THAT good...
Jrod K
The closest thing I can locally find to true Parisian pastries! 😍 love the ambiance..exchange the American music for some French classic and I would swear I'm back in a sidestreet bistro in Paris. Macaroons are a must...and the almond croissants are even better. …
Crystal Reeder
The quality of product is very good and the atmosphere is nice. The reason for four stars is that if you are not there within the first hour or two of their day, then you will not get 60% of the original days Goods. They either need to make more of those items or take special requests. It's so annoying that maybe once out of every 20 times I make it in there, that the few things I really love are available. I'm always stuck with a stupid muffin when I really want a cinnamon roll! They are to die for.
Jeff Ellis
* La Mie is a french style breakfast and lunch place, with a lot of fresh baked pastries and breads. *
When you walk in, you get in line and walk past their fresh baked pastries, you can grab a box and fill it up as you go if you would like, they're reasonably priced so you can get a couple.
Everything I've had from the bakery has been good, but I'm a particular fan of Almond Bars.
Most everything from the omelettes to the sandwiches will run you about 5-7 dollars, and are quite good. Again I've liked each sandwich and breakfast item I've but, here are some favorites to start with:
Ham and cheese omelette: great combination of the main 3 ingredients, never dry and quite satisfying.
Oatmeal: 2 sizes, side and enormous. Can come with brown sugar, dried fruit, cream or milk, just ask.
Ham and cheese sandwich: For me the bread is too crusty so I switch to focaccia or just white bread. It's a nice size and is never dry.
Dayne Nelson
The bagguette sold out before we got there so they gave us a free loaf of ciabatta! Great sweats too
Semir Hadzic
Forget any other bakery. This is hands down the best place to get any pasteries in Des Moines. Tarts and croissants are magical. Brunch time it does get busy but well worth the wait, so find a babysitter in the morning and go get breakfast here.
GREG DAVIES
Pastries are fantastic! Love this place!
Bridgette Glass
Delicious goodies and food for all. Great options for vegetarians.
Kelli Schoney
The food is so good - there is always something just a little bit different - I really enjoy their attention to detail. The staff are always friendly and easy to work with. The salmon tartine is my favorite breakfast item!
Chen Jan
4 star for food, 2 star for the staff with glasses who requested my baby and my husband and my father to leave the table while I was ordering on the counter. This was so rude and I got no apology.
Reply to the owner, the waiter at the check out had got the number before we were “expelled” . We had to change the table number and later got the same size table. As a first time customer, no one explained the policy to us. We tried not to block the way and made the order as soon as possible. The staff with glasses was so cold and suspiciously racist.
MacKenzie Ulin
I love this place! The food is amazing- the quiche, french toast, and turkey club are my favorites. And the coffee is perfect. Try the pastries!! Long lines in the morning but definitely worth it.
Sarah Fineran
The food is always good at LaMie but the menu durring COVID is slightly more restrictive. They take safety very important right now and have a revised protocol for providing their historically sprawled out and displayed bakery items. There is no dining right now physically inside of the bakery however they do offer a space just next door to dine in where you are provided LaMie services.
Megan Bosak Duff
Great small business right off interstate at 42nd street in the roosevelt shops. Friendly faces although minimal service, seat yourself, pick up your own silverware and etc. Amazing pastries and breakfast meals. Great family spot and kid friendly. Easy to take pastries or desserts home too. Some outdoor seating behind as well as additional parking lot.
Max Scott
A great bakery. Very busy for breakfast and lunch, try to avoid the rush if you can. The best party is the lemon/raspberry danish. Their sandwiches are good too, try the chicken pesto.
Sarah Burt
The quiche is delightful and I never leave without a pastry or two. I love the big mugs that my almond milk latte is served in. Such a cozy, modern, little place. Classic. Staple.
Sarah Davis
I love, love, love La Mie. We've been enjoying their fresh French breads, pastries, and food for years.
My daughter and I have a Saturday tradition of stopping at the La Mie stand at the DSM Farmers Market for an almond croissant, buttery classic croissant or cranberry orange scones...they are all so amazing and reasonably priced.
I also purchase a variety of desserts for my team at work for events/celebrations...the lemon tart, tiramisu, and macarons are particular favorites.
If you've only had the floppy sad croissants from a grocery store, you don't know what you are missing. Try them this week either at the restaurant or farmers market. You won't be disappointed.
Andrew Glass
Great lunch time options for people in a hurry. The dessert case can’t be missed. Never had a bad item here
Brandon Blaylock
Lost my keys in the parking lot of la mie and Joe was so helpful and really took care of us as we waited for a locksmith! He checked up on me multiple times to see how things we're going! He even offered me to use his own care incase I needed to get help! I already loved La Mie but this kind of graciousness makes me love La Mie even more!
Kati Anderson
Great coffee!! Also- best fresh squeezed o.j. ever!! So many pastries to choose from. Disappointed that I couldn't get a croque monsieur at a French cafe, but the ham and brie was outstanding.
Sammy_B
La Mie is my go to for good, cheap food in Des Moines. I've had the Grilled Brie, the Portobello (both from the sandwich menu), as well as a wonderful roasted beet salad with champagne vinaigrette. I've never been disappointed by the amount of options or the quality of the food. The desserts I've had--panna cotta and chocolate mousse--were stellar. Always creamy and never too sweet. I don't need to get deep into the preparations of individual dishes I've had in this review, but it will suffice to say that more care could be put into some aspects of preparation i.e., more even spreading of cheese or sauces. But after all, what am I expecting when the food comes out just minutes after you order at the counter? If I could make one recommendation, it would be to avoid the lunch rush as much as possible. That's the only time I've had to wait in line for more than a couple minutes. Great food, better prices, and a short drive from downtown Des Moines. I highly recommend La Mie.
DeLynn Boal
Pastries are wonderful. The help is not overly friendly. Seating is not laid our well and depending on where you sit to eat, people waiting in line are right in your space. I think the food is ok however, last time I ate there I was extremely ill.
Jesse Kauffman
AMAZING FOOD!! I have had to travel to Des Moines on business several times this year and La Mie knocks lunch out of the park every time! Delicious food that reminds me of my days in France, helpful and kind service, and complimentary iced tea and bread - it's an all around great place. Do yourself a favor and eat here!
Tony Loret de Mola
Imagine a fabulous French Bakery in the heart of Iowa. When you are at La Mie you feel as if you've been transported to France. Excellent pastries and coffees as you would expect! Good place for breakfast or lunch.
Ryan Heki
Fantastic service and great food. The staff is friendly and gracious. I received a free refill on my Americano coffee after I accidentally spilled it while trying to get into my car. FYI, the parking lot often gets packed.
Mickell Imerman
If I could choose one place to have breakfast everyday it would be La Mie. Everyone is always so kind here. The coffee is great, the pastries are great, and The Salmon Tartine is to die for!
Norman Hall
Iced tea has gone skyhigh, costing 3.50 for half a glass, and no refills. The tea tasted like coffee. What has happened,ed to this place.
Ross Baetiong
their food is delicious.
their business is doing so well. i hope for them to expand their place a little bit more.
I also think that its a good idea if they remove their tables that is close by the door. the place tends to get chilly on winter. dont expect to remove your jacket when its chilly outside.
James Packard
First visit went well. Service was above average and friendly. Didn't get excellent only because it's a casual place. Best coffee I've had recently and pastries were delicious. Gonna try this place for lunch.
MAC Thilges
Super friendly staff and delicious food and drinks.
Support Your Local
This place is amazing. Always packed so you have to sit next to strangers and that just a great part of the experience! You get to eat amazing food and meet new people! The pasty buffet is amazing and the service is fantastic!
Paige Fisher
I was overwhelmed when I walked in and a woman came to help me right away. Prices are similar to a Panera bread. Great food and pastry. I LoVe their back patio, feels like you're at a pier.
Clay Hollenback
Fantastic array of fresh pastries and breads for breakfast.
Chris Fortenbach
Great bread, good salads, but only average sandwiches. The tuna was quite sweet the egg salad was unseasoned. Worth a trip for the bread/pastries!
Andrés Martinez-Negrete
Probably the best bakery in the City, you can also dine in with a slection of ready made meals or made to order. Love their bread
Ashley Van Alstine Vetter
Amazing owners, supportive of our progressive faith community and delicious food. They have tons of healthy options with many tasty tempting bakery treats.
Lisa Bates
Amazing customer service! The staff is friendly and kind! Their food is amazing! There are lots of healthy breakfast and salad choices! The fresh squeezed orange juice is the best!

Abril Uruchurtu
Drove 2 hours just to eat breakfast here and the drive and was definitely worth it. The pastries sold here were just unbelievable and like no other. A lot of variety too.
Melanie Eaton
First time here. The pastries!!!! Had a delicious breakfast. Worth the trip!
Deb Korver
I had called ahead an order about a week before hand. Unfortunately, when I arrived it wasn't ready, but the people there made sure too quickly accommodate me and were very polite about the confusion. Their food is outstanding and I will definitely be back.
Samantha Hogan
Delish!!! My new favorite breakfast place!
Johnathan Fischer
Delicious breakfast spot and the pastries are the best part. I love the chocolate croissants. Only wish they were open on Sundays!
J Misel
La Mie is just fantastic. Food is always fresh and delicious. If I lived closer I would probably eat here 3 times a week at a minimum. A must visit place.
Brian K
Amazing but they have transgender bathrooms
Roger Johnson
The Almond Croissants and Pecan Croissant Gooey Rolls were fantastic! We highly recommend this bakery!
peter loyd
Still open and a wonderful boulangerie. Great personal pizzas and all the usual delicious pastries and baguettes. Waiting to be able to sit down on the weekend.
Maggie Rediske
Absolutely amazing, stopped here without knowing anything about it and it was such a wonderful surprise! I was skeptical because of its location in a sort of strip mall type thing, but it was perfect, exactly what we were looking for. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Des Moines!
Isaac Fisher
First time coming here and everything was excellent! Will definitely be back!
Tommy BP
Excellent local bakery! I've gone here dozens of times and they always deliver. Best pastries in Des Moines and great food options for a cafe.
Caasi Heckman
Of course great food, the lovely people working the counter seem to remember us half the time! Great service. Wish you could open more than one location. I'd visit them all!
Josh E.
This place is great! With two other locations in downtown Des Moines, this bakery makes some of the best food in the city. I stop by here at least a couple times a year.
Garrett Spencer
Amazing pastries and food. Come early or be prepared for a wait.
Vannah Willow
It's not the cheapest but not too pricey either. Their bread is amazing, and a their food is delicious. The whole environment is nice and refreshing and everything seems to be made fresh.
Adia Grimm

Clayton Walenta
Really cool place for breakfast. Amazing array of baked goods, and all high quality. Very busy on a Saturday morning, and the staff were very nice.
JohnDana Custis
Wonderful French sandwiches, quiche, and pastries. I find the interior finished a little Spartan for my taste, but the food more than makes up for it.
Ann Burkhardt
Wonderful great quality pastries. Also healthy and tasty lunch menu. Can be difficult parking and crowded and loud at times...but a must go to spot!
cecilia wright
This place is excellent! There is a variety of choices so the really trouble is picking one of the amazing foods!! Although it is always busy, the food is totally worth it! Nothing better then La Mie on a Saturday morning!
P W

matteo visentin
This bakery has some really tasty options in the menu but when I was there (party of 6) the ordering and service felt a bit disorganized. The manager and stuff are very attentive though.
Erin Rundall
Yummmmmmm breakfast lunch or dinner
Baked goods too- stop in for pastry or bread.
Extra parking around back
Angella Oliver
Always great food and company. Get here early for great selection of pastries and sandwiches. Wish they had grape jelly, staff would not help.
Mike Edwards
Terrific pastries and bread. The breakfast offerings are delicious but come early to avoid the crowds. Try the ham and Brie sandwich for lunch.

NICOLE Sams
The absolute best place to get pastries and bread!! Delicious!! Closest to real french pastries and cookies that I've had in Des Moines!!
Gabrielle Smithman
La Mie is my go-to for breakfast and lunches. Their chicken salad sandwich is in my top five favorite dishes in Des Moines.

Good concept, but they have to improve the pastries.... is not a french bakery. The service was ok.

I wish you'd change the menu item "BERRY French toast" to "fruit French toast." Too many times, I've been surprised that my Berry French toast is actually banana French toast with a few blueberries. I miss the old BERRY French toast with strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries.
Mjsrt11 strouf-townsdin
Consistently awesome. Pastries are superb and the coffee is rich and delicious!
Zack Miller
