This place is a must see! You feel like you're back in 1950, picking up a delicious handmade dessert that will impress even your mother in law...the staff is so friendly. The treats are endless, & last time the owner was treating all the kids to a frosted holiday cookie! Def visit here, you will be delighted.

I grew up going to this bakery. Their cakes are delicious. The strudels are worth buying and having a cup of coffee. If you need something to take when you're going to someone's home, go to Lutz bakery and grab a pastry. It is worth getting a cake, streusel, macarons, cookies, or any dessert.

This place is Amazing!! I got a cake yesterday for my mom‘s birthday from here it was my first time getting something. As soon as I walked in it smelled so good, everything in there looked freshly made the donuts the pastries. They sell boxes of cookies they looked really good so I bought a box of cookies on top of the cake that I already bought. Those cookies were amazing so good. But the cake that I bought there was amazing. my mom loved it everybody else who was eating the cake said it was really good. This place just got a customer for life

Absolutely stellar. Came here specifically to find sacher torte. Left with just that and a slice of dark chocolate cake. The best sacher torte I've yet to have! The dark chocolate cake was similarly incredible. Dark chocolate ganache coated a light chocolate mousse covering three layers of moist, dark chocolate cake. Unlike most cakes this surprisingly wasn't too sweet--it was perfect. Sacher torte had two layers of apricot jam, a rich chocolate cake base, and a beautiful dark chocolate coat. With multiple cases of single cake slices, whole cakes, cookies, quick breads, and pastries, you're bound to find many treats to love. With COVID the small dining area and restrooms are currently closed. That was a bummer. Quick and friendly service. Very fair prices.

I'm fairly new to the north side, so I stumbled upon this place a few months ago and absolutely love it! Their cupcakes and cannoli's are the BEST I've ever had!! I was lucky enough to speak to the owner and I let him know how much I love them, and he graciously gave me a piece of their strawberry cake to try! Thank you for such great customer service and caring about your product.... very fresh, consistently good pastries! Seriously, try the cupcakes!

After searching for a bakery 🙂 I found it. Very nice, helpful, friendly workers. I place several times here. When I have a question about a cake 🎂 they answer my questions. Tasty pastries, and coffee. I could say the person who always helped me out is Joanna. She's always accurate about the size of the cake. For me this place is very unique. So, if you doubt of ordering a cake ask for help they will give you a answer correct by each step of details. 😊😊 . Is very rare to find employees that are really good with customers. thank you 🙂

Needed a last-minute birthday cake. The owner helped me to pick out the perfect cake, and he assured me their signature strawberry whipped cream cake was the one to pick. Boy was he ever right. Lutz's really took great care of me, every last detail was perfect. You can tell they treat their employees and customers like they are all family. The recipient just loved it and said it was extraordinary!

It’s been years since I’ve been to Lutz’s Bakery and it didn’t disappoint. We started out with 2 slices of their Strawberry Whipped Cream cake. It was full of fresh strawberries and tasty whipped cream. We had their house coffee with the cake. Their are only three 2-chaired tables inside the bakery, no outdoor cafe for obvious reasons when it's 43 degrees.

This is by far the best place to get cakes. For any birthdays or occasion, this is my go to spot. Their cakes are so delicious and fresh. They even have a dark chocolate cake that I usually get, and that never disappoints me. They also have mini deserts that you can purchase upfront as well as coffee.

I drive 50 minutes and probably pass 20+ bakeries from the northern burbs when I need to get that special occasion cake from Lutz. Our family has been going here for 20+ years. Love their fresh strawberry whipped cream cake AND their Mocha cream cake! Both are so light and delicious!! I can’t wait for the next birthday or anniversary. Always helpful staff that knows how important customer service is!

Wanted to love this place but unfortunately the customer service was terrible. They charged me for the cake immediately and less than 24 hours later the party was canceled due to COVID and they refused to refund me without an additional charge. Disappointing that they are passing these charges through to the consumer on a $75 cake :( Soon after I left this review the owner reached out to me and let me know that the staff was confused about the policy and the service charge was a mistake. The concern and follow up was much appreciated and it was nice to hear that this actually isn't part of their standard practice. Full disclosure, I haven't actually tried their products yet but the initial experience was rectified!

Great bakery!! I go out of my way to get their Red Velvet Cupcakes!! Literally the best in the city that I've found! They actually use cream cheese frosting and its cream cheese filled!!! Cake itself is soft and moist 💖 I'm writing this review because I'm just in love with them, but if you guys go to get the Red Velvet Cupcakes please leave one for me!! 😭❣️

Never disappointed with the desserts, whether it is just a piece or a whole cake. You can order cakes in advance and in several sizes which is a big plus. Certain danishes and pastries are 2 for 1 later in the day.

Definitely one of the best bakery in the Chicagoland area. This bakery is well known for their cake & pastries but whatever you can find in this place, you won't be disappointed. Interior is not much of fancy but definitely very cozy side and for the locals, it definitely give a feeling of being in hometown of Chicago. For sure, if you hate the seen and sense of gentrification, this is a perfect place because while this place is not fancy, the classic local feeling and definitely full of cozy old familiar mom&pop store feeling. I might recommend the store renovation but definitely highly recommend not to change anything way they look and feel because any changes won't improve any but only loose the charm only this place has. This bakery is quite a bit pricy side of the bakery and cost efficiency wide, you might want to visit some other place. However, for the special occasions or something special, this is the to go place to have those special occasion cake or pastry.

The Strawberry Whipped Cream Torte is the best cake I’ve ever tasted. The whipped cream is so airy and only mildly sweet. The strawberries aren’t drenched in syrup, THANKFULLY! Most of the sweetness comes from the cake itself which balances everything out perfectly and makes for a dangerously easy to eat dessert

If I'm craving a dessert thats delicious, Lutz (amongst one other bakery) will be my new go to. Knowing I don't like sugar loaded desserts and it being my birthday, a friend treated me to a slice of strawberry cake. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Being a baker myself, I'm very mindful of the amount of sweeteners I add to desserts. I often find myself chucking cake in the rubbish bin from other bakeries due to the overwhelming sugar rush from one bite. This did not occur at Lutz and for that reason, I'll return again and again. If you visit, try the strawberry cake

Though the savory aspects are limited to a flakey croissant and great coffee options, the sweets options are excellent! We definitely over ordered to try things, and I don't regret it. The standouts for me: the fruit tarts are bursting with fruit, cheese and fruit danishes are top notch, the cinnamon rolls are moist and light with just the right amount of sweet. We will definitely be back for the food, but the service was also helpful (there's a lot to pick from) and very friendly! The back patio is a great place to enjoy a pastry (or 6) and a cappuccino.

I've been coming here since I was child and they still have delicious cake, cookies and sweets. It's also nice that they have an outdoor patio so that you enjoy your pastries outside. The tables are set six feet apart and they have hand sanitizer and disposable utensils. However, I wouldn't recommend that you order a hot chocolate. I ordered one for the first time today and not only did it taste awful but it also really upset my stomach by the time that I got home. Overall, as long as you just get pastries you're at the right place.

I've been to Austria a few times but have never tried its delicacy, sacher torte. Of course, Austria has some other great food and there are many things to enjoy there but sacher torte kept lingering in my mind. Obviously it is not that easy to fly to Europe these days and I randomly searched sacher torte and, ta-da!, this place appeared on the map. 'Ok, I'd give it a try.' I told to myself and drove there. Good thing was that there were some groceries that you can shop and park before you go to this place. In terms of the actual sacher torte, it has very chocolatey taste but with the jam having its voice. I would like to have the full sacher torte if I have more people to share the cake. Also, it only fueled my desire to visit Austria further......

Pastries are old world delicious. But here are my observations: Parking extremely difficult and a hassle. Late morning selections very limited. Appearance neglected. Pricing high end,but worth it. Perhaps the pandemic has taken a toll on this business or the owner is nearing retirement. What a loss to the city if we lose this special place. Maybe more customers is a solution. We live 150 miles away from Lutz Cafe and Pastry Shop. We have been ordering their sachertorte for the past several years for the holidays. First, ordering with them on the phone is an easy and courteous experience. Second, the cake they makes is stunning in decoration. Third, this cake is amazing and we hear raves about it from our friends every year. It's absolutely worth the distance from our house to Lutz to get this lovely cake.

The pastry selection was overwhelming! Every sweet looked so yummy. First, I ordered a coffee and cinnamon bun to enjoy in their cafe. Then I chose a milk chocolate cupcake and a lemon cupcake with melt-in-your mouth creamy icing to take home. I'm anxious to try a cake and/or brownie next time.

Very nice vintage bakery - love 70th groove, decoration, tables and super cool outside area during summer. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is that they don't care to have non dairy cream like soy or almond to the coffee they serve. Expanding offer by vegan items would be cool as well (or necessary actually)

I have been going to this bakery since the 90s. I used to live 2 blocks away. Although the staff no longer wears traditional "European lady" white uniforms the cakes have remained the same. To get a quality pastry/cake/torte this is it. Even though I no longer live in the city every time I meet up with friends I make it a point to stop here. My favorite is the sliced marzipan cake that is always displayed in the sliced cakes window as soon as you walk in. It is out of this world, seriously.

First, I tried out a cupcake and it was delicious. Then, I ordered a cake in the summer, and it was really dry. I stuck to just ordering cupcakes every once in awhile. However, lately, the cupcakes have been dry as well. Wondering if they don't make fresh batches in the winter, or the person baking just stopped caring.

The strawberry whipped cream cake here is amazing, but be sure to eat it within a few days because the strawberries don't have a long shelf life. They will also personalize a cake for an additional fee but almost always get the spelling wrong. That's ok though, because I'll take delicious cake over perfect spelling any day!

Stopped in for coffee with a friend. Great coffee reasonably priced, table cloths, an outdoor patio, what more could you want? Well, how about one of their deservedly famous pastries? Quiet, uncrowded, good coffee, heavenly pastries. As the staff T-shirts proclaim, stressed spelled backwards is desserts. You'll leave with a much better attitude than you arrived with.

Being a Northsider from Chicago trying other Cakes I think nothing can compare to Lutz. It has been a family tradition when my mom worked across the street and would buy these cakes for special occasions. As I got older I did like going there and had tried the restaurant before they closed it down in the late 2010. I do have to say stay with their cakes. Best flavors are the Strawberry, Coffee Mocha (Order in advance now because they do not sell them in slices), the Hazalnut and the Black Forest just like in Germany. Keep away from their cupcakes though. The cupcakes are not that great. Otherwise always go for their cakes as a whole torte, sheet or slices.

I'd really want to give Lutz an extra half star here, especially for nostalgia sake. This was of course the go-to bakery for my Austrian/German family throughout my adolesence. My mom and grandma still talk about it 20 years later. This is my second visit in two years. The first experience was rather disappointing. This time, so much better. Both different than I remember it. The most recent visit, I purchased 5 of the $5 cake slices. They are a fair portion for the price. Here was my order of preference: #1 Black Forest #2 Sachre Torte #3 Marzipan #4 Strawberry Mousse #5 Chocolate Mousse I'd come back and I would be very interested in trying the coffee service. In the meantime, I would say that the owner was very friendly and personable. The cookie I sampled did bring me right back to childhood and that's gotta count for something! Additionally, I have been on a bakery kick and tried just about all the major cupcake venues as well as purchasing a couple of birthday cakes from my very bakery heavy neighborhood and Lutzs surpasses just about all of them.

Lutz is a long-time family favorite. The cakes and pastries are delicious, and extremely well done. I ordered the Buche de Noel for everyone in the family over the holidays, and my in-laws were amazed that they tasted even better than they had 40 years ago. This is now my choice for birthday and celebration cakes, the mandarin orange with white cake being one of my all-time faves!
