I don’t write reviews until I’ve visited the same place 3-4 times with some exceptions. I live on the complete other side of Boston and still think it’s worth the commute. Pastries are solid and have a sort of good homemade taste and not overly sweet. It’s also a great place to get settle down and do some work. For me it’s great. Definitely must try: Baklava, Napoleon

Its my favorite cookie place in the town so far. Really love these european style cookies (Not too sweet, and not gooey) there is usually only one person in the counter for pick up cookies and making coffee or other costumer services when I visit. so you have to wait with patient. Also latte is sometime little watery but overall good bakery I love to visit.

The good: We had some lovely pastries (apricot and almond as well as apple. The flavour was perfect and not too sweet. The space is quirky but warm and friendly sky. The cons: The gentleman who served us microwaved the pastries when we asked for them to be heated so they became soggy (typically bakeries will use an oven). This is definitely more of a bakery and not a coffee shop. The coffees tasted burnt and myself and my husband were unable to finish them.

I used to go Athens a lot amazing cakes and baked goods the set up the floor everything was amazing but this weekend what I saw was sad the goods are still amazing the place the dust that inviting atmosphere is gone I think pandemic was very hard on them I don’t want them to disappear like all the good places we used to know and replace by cookie cutter brand

This place is extremely well known for their desserts and rightly so, their every dessert was yummy. However, they were a lil too sweet than I normally like my desserts to be. Baklava is offered in wide varieties as well. Their Jamaican chocolate is very famous, although it is quite good, it is very heavy as well. Napoleon pastry and Eclair were nice light dessert.

my first time to visit the cafe and the entrance with the massive chandelier transported me back to europe! wasn't even planning to eat, but stopped and got the black forest and almond cake with an earl grey. needless to say, i ended up staying. people watching through the gigantic windows was cathartic! maybe, i shouldn't post this! hahahahaha

This is a surprising little gem in Brookline. A very cozy place with delicious cake. Perfect place to sit down with your date. It’s quiet enough to have a pleasant conversation.

This is where I go when I crave some tasty baklava. The rest of the sweets are good as well. The place has quirky layout and flow, usually seems a bit understaffed and it can be confusing where you order and where you pick your stuff up if you are there for first time. But this is all part of Athan's character.

I liked the place, but didn't 'love' it. Instead of feeling vintage, it felt a bit old. The pastries were good, but not amazing, and the same goes for the coffee. I did like the display of chocolates and cakes, but didn't taste any, so I can't testify to that.

A great bakery with delicious cakes, biscuits, chocolates, baklavas. Kadaifs and ice-cream. Staff is very friendly and pleasant. Prices are slightly hig. The only disappointment is the coffee. The espresso, latte and regular American coffee were simply not good. Try their teas, which are much better.

Definitely recommend!! Greek friend confirms that this place has authentic Greek and Mediterranean sweets. It has delicious pastries, chocolates and other sweets! A huge variety, as well. The inside is spacious and cozy, and the staff is nice and helpful.

The chocolate covered domes were delicious last time I went, and the black forest cake today was equally amazing. A tall glass of pretty decent decaf for only 2.25 went well with it :)

I came to eat and work yesterday, and ended up staying later than I normally do. I always liked this place during the day, but it is even cooler at night! Around 5:00 it got busier and it was like a little microcosm of Brookline. Lots of different languages being spoken, people bringing children or elderly relatives for a treat, some college professors discussing esoteric things, people reading books, people working....very cosmopolitan and fun! Also, since it was getting late and I was hungry, I had an excuse to have several snacks including a raspberry croissant. It was delicious!

Super nice staff with the ponytail! Also gave us a container for our gelato on the way out, very thoughtful. The chocolate chip cookies are so soft and delicious, highly recommend. Great seating area for a pleasant conversation.

Athan's! On the corner of Beacon and Washington St. I've been going there for the past two years and I'm never disappointed. The almond croissant and almondoa dessert are 😙 *chef's kiss* The people who work there are really warm and friendly even when they're swamped! I love that they play music in various languages. A casual, comfy vibe with the feel of a legit European bakery. I love Athan's! 💗

Food isn't bad but they don't have apple pay or anything like that so make sure you take your cards or cash with you. We had ordered our food but left it on plates as we couldn't pay for it because of them not accepting apple pay. The place is good and so was the barista.

I had only visited the sister store a few times and saw that everything is made on premises, even the coffee is roasted there. This translates to great quality and freshness. The Brookline store, while smaller, has a great location, a corner spot for people watching while enjoying a cup of Coffee and a delicious pastry. Great selection of cakes and pastries. The baklava as authentic as it gets. Highly recommended!

One of the only bakeries in the Greater Boston Area that actually sells a variety of breads and not tarts. The cranberry twist is my favorite, it is made with puff pastry and real cranberries; very special. The Spinakopta is also excellent. Coffee is overall pretty good, and the sandwiches are homemade and crunchy. This place really gets to your heart.

The cookies are pretty expensive. And maybe I wasn’t lucky, but when I came there, there wasn’t a lot of choice. But I hope, this shop will have better days. The apple strudel is affordable and absolutely delicious!

A long-standing favorite bakery of mine; absolutely make it a point to stop in here for some baked treats & an espresso. While the sit-down portion of the bakery is always packed, I never have a hard time finding a spot to enjoy my snacks. Service is so friendly, very neighborhoody. Just a good, good place.

I came here mostly to use the facilities but it turned out to be a great stop. The raspberry crumble was awesome and the chocolates were quite tasty. I wasn't overly impressed with the layout of the place. The food is there for self service but they don't want you to do it. Instead you must ask for service.

Delightful pastery, peaceful environment, cosy place to indulge yourself in world of sweets. The lady behind the counter was super friendly, fast at taking the order, and helpful when we had questions. All menu items are delicious 😋 so don't be hard on yourself while picking, try to be efficient in trying all items in your future visits instead! P.S. definitely order a drink as well, I suggest the English breakfast tea.

I sometimes stop by this shop in the evening for a late coffee. Their espresso is served quickly from a super automatic machine. 1.87 for a single shot of beans of unknown progeny. This is not where I go for coffee in the day time, but with so few options for the late cuppa, I feel lucky to have them nearby. The first time you go into this shop, you may find it confusing to order, but after multiple visits I know that they are always friendly and the service is quick. The shop is more famous for their confections, which are displayed in the front of the shop. The sweets are really good but I'm not a big sweet tooth.

Great little place, I'd call it a hidden gem. They have the BEST full size cakes to take home, and have little ones if you want something for yourself. Really delicious pastries and a cafe part with good coffee and tea. Over all would recommend to anyone and everyone.

A really nice selection of well made cakes and pastries, and nice sunny places to sit. Coffee could be better as could the non pastry food. Looking forward to when the wobbly tables get fixed finally though. Oh and a change of the Putamaya sound track which has been playing for 3+ years now too. Come on owner - freshen the place up a bit - you have competition from Cafe Nero and Starbucks within 2 blocks of here!

Really bad customer service. I read good reviews about this place and went with excitment to buy some pastries. The guy at the counter was very rude and unprofessional I have to change my review from one star to three stars after going home and tested the pastries. I bought a couple of cakes and baklavas. They all test so good. I also had a "cappuccino" it looked like latte to me but no complain about it, I liked it. I think a place like this with quality and expensive products should hire a person who has excellent customer service skill. When I told the sales man how rude he was to me, he offered my cappuccino to be on the house. NO THANK YOU. Don't be a stereo type. I am not like those people who complain to get free stuffs. Just improve your attitude.

This place has the best baklava in Boston, and very solid European cakes and pastries as well. They are open late for Brookline, until 11pm most nights I believe, which makes it a great go-to spot for those Friday and Saturday nights when you just want a dessert and some time to get some reading done. WiFi is also available. Highly recommend.

Athan's is a magical place: stepping inside feels like you've been transported to a French patisserie. The desserts and gelato are delicious, and the staff is very friendly. The fresh ham and cheese croissants are a morning favorite, especially if you get there early enough that they're still warm from the oven!

Greek/Turkish coffee frappe, can do it without dairy. Almond macaroons that are gluten-free and dairy-free that I must confess that I'm a bit addicted to. The menu options are diverse enough that most people should be able to get a really good meal. If you have gluten or dairy allergies, this might be a tough go, but the atmosphere makes it a great place to get a coffee and get a few hours of work done. If you DO NOT have a gluten allergy, and you don't start making happy gurgling noises like a four-month old upon your first time entering this place, there's something very wrong with you. Highly recommended.

Really great pastries. If there's a line it can be a little slow since the person at the register also has to grab any pastries for you from the side display. It can be crowded which definitely shows its popularity. Would be nice if they had more comfortable seating. You can also sit up at the bar or at a few small tables in the front room. Another thing is you can only see the menu at the very front of the line, which I find can slow things down since you can't think over your options while waiting.

Amazing European style bakery packed with shortbreads, baklava, gelato, cakes, and pastries. It’s not heavily chocolate oriented which is not only authentic but also a great change from most bakeries or candy shops nearby. There is a coffee shop connected in the back that I didn’t try but there was ample seating and comfortable ambiance.

The cafe area has become Starbucks-ified, with lots of patrons ordering a drink, then sitting for hours working. The pastries themselves are tiny works of art. I've been underwhelmed by the texture and flavors. If you want to show a loved one you care, and they're more into baked goods than flowers, this is the shop for you. Taking off one star because there always seems to be either a line or nobody around to help me. Taking off another star because the goods are never as delicious as they look.

Pastries, croissants (including savory variants such as ham&cheese), & baklava are great. Coffee is average. Overall very authentic place with high quality food. Great "old school" environment with free wifi. Head guy can be a little pithy but it's part of the charm.

All the pastries are stored in containers around the store which means the one person behind the register has to leave the counter and go grab whatever you want. It isn't the fastest system but if you have the time it's worth it. The food is fantastic.

An excellent Greek bakery! I highly recommend. You may also take your laptop and enjoy drinking coffee and eating Greek baked goodies while working or chatting with your friends. The gelato is great as well. Try the one made with figs!

It’s a decent bakery. Interior improvements needed but it can be seen ok too depending on what one can think. Good to visit if you want something different. Nothing much to complain. Seems like people in the town like this place.

The restaurant across the street does not have a dessert menu because they say why bother. You'd be better off coming here to athans. Mango cake, great coffee, and a gold wrapped chocolate to bring home for the babysitter. Bliss.

Whenever i bring people into Boston from out of town, this is always one of my favorite places to go. The front of the store is a dessert area, with single serve cakes that are a chocolate lovers dream. They have an area of greek pastries, cookies, candy, and gelato. The other side of the establishment is a cafe with wifi, several tables and good coffees of all sorts. This has been a favorite destination for several years now. Give them a try!

While I have liked this place, I was rushed away from a table one evening and told," Can you go over there? This is for groups" as he called to a family of 4 to sit where I was. I was embarrased& shamefully gathered my things to go sit in a single seat by the door. If it had not been raining profusely&, I would have gone elsewhere prior to ordering. There is a way to speak to people& if I arrive first, I should be allowed to study & eat at a round table for 4. Cafe Nero would never have snapped at me to the point the family that replaced me felt the need to apologize three times.
