Back in 2007, I ran into some trouble with the IRS. Unable to pay what they said that I owed, I was basically forced to abstain from working and having a checking/savings account in fear of having everything I earned confiscated. What would be the point, right? I had heard of "maybe" getting the IRS to back off of a debt with an attorney's help, if I was lucky, to just 10% on the dollar but with what they said that I owed, even that was impossible to pay and I'd still owe the attorney an unknown fee. So I simply discounted any help that an attorney would be able to offer. Then, in 2016, I received a mailer from Seattle Legal Services advertising their services. Honestly, my only consideration at the time for contacting them was to give them a piece of my mind because I'd received numerous offers just like it from other attorneys over the years. From the way I understood things, there wasn't much that could be done for my situation other than waiting for the statute of limitations to expire. But when I called, the attorney that I spoke to explained things very simply and told me about the Fresh Start Initiative that was designed to help people just like me. Still very skeptical, I did agree to working with him. He was even helpful in being willing to accept payments for the very reasonable fee since I didn't even have that up front. Over the course of the following year, my attorney was able to have an almost $900,000 debt reduced to owing only $10 with my offer in compromise. My advice is don't wait to speak to someone about your situation. The consultation is free. Be up front with your circumstances and get an estimate of how things may go for you and may you get the peace of mind that you deserve.

When I called the number I didn't know what to expect. When he answered the phone I told him my situation and was about to tell him my story, and he stopped me. There was no need for how you got here, your here lets resolve this. And I just felt relief cause I didn't have to go into any details of why. And from that day on all he asked for was basic information about me and he went from there. What was so amazing is that I didn't have to do anything, nothing. I hired John and his team to handle years of back taxes for me. I called around and spoke to a few lawyers about my situation but John's knowledge and energy were so reassuring that I actually hired him on the spot. It was alot of work to get current but I never got the sense that they were getting tired of dealing with my situation (it was bad) which was nice. In the end, John got my total tax of $35,000 reduced to 10% of the total, $3500. I couldn't believe it because it was already reduced by $10,000 from the beginning balance of $45,000. I was actually in shock when he sent me the paperwork showing the final total. The only thing is that I had to leave msg's alot of the time but someone always got back to me quickly so it wasn't a frustration. I would definitely hire Seattle Legal Services again if I'm stupid enough to get myself in trouble like that again!
