I know that this organization helps so many people, but it's very confusing on how to start a case, what exactly they cover, and getting a live voice. the problem is there is none to match this organization and talk with thousands and thousands of people jamming up housing court, evictions, it's even harder to get proper representation with a reasonable time frame. meanwhile many of us are being evicted from our home. I know that a lot of very very good lawyers don't eat their time so I can't say anything bad, it is not their fault that the city and state are such idiots.

I cannot praise GBLS enough! I didn't think I would have much luck filing an appeal against my denial for unemployment benefits. When DUA denies your claim, they send you a letter which mentions that the appeal process is optional, and at the end of the letter is a list of free legal resources that may be able to help. When I saw the list, I thought "There's NO WAY I'm going to get any help. The wait list for these firms, organizations, nonprofits etc. must be a mile long on any given day - I can't imagine I'll have any luck during a pandemic & national employment crisis!" But I knew that I needed to appeal DUA's decision to deny my benefits, with or without representation or legal counsel. I called some of the phone numbers listed and filled out some applications on a few websites. I got directed to a few different places before someone finally referred me to GBLS and my lawyer, Elizabeth Whiteway. Ms. Whiteway was kind and compassionate to me as a client. We were fighting a short timeline, but she never made me feel rushed, or like I was some pathetic "charity case" who should be grateful that they threw me a bone. In fact, I was so comfortable confiding in her, and she validated my feelings in many ways. She didn't make me feel like some dumb young poor girl who looked up to her as the fancy smart lawyer. She actually made it a point to tell me that SHE admired ME, and her kind words have really resonated with me and my self-esteem. I thought I was prepared for a DIY appeal, but I could not have done it without her hard work, which was performed with the utmost integrity and a genuine concern for my wellbeing. Her work, and the work of those at GBLS and similar organizations... I am so incredibly grateful for. They truly are unsung heroes, working selflessly for everyday people who don't have access to many resources. The world could use more people like Ms. Whiteway and her colleagues.

If you cannot afford an attorney they will help you with either one of their attorneys depending on what it is you are dealing with or they will definitely point you in the right direction. I want to say carefully that This place helped Me once but then when I needed help for my daughter’s disability denial because she is in a special class in school and she needs her SSI Benefits they said that they couldn’t help Me for that unfavorable decision that that Jugde said that day and my daughter needs this SSI check benefit to live well and they denied it. I hope one day they realize what they said about my daughter’s and Me and the denial they caused to help my daughter’s and Me with what We uniquely needed help from without exagerations and from this type of SSI benefit. I also want to say that when you speak to people like us in the beginning you have to becareful with what you say and cause if you don’t want the same to be done to you. In this time of Covid, my usual free tax place was closed. I waited and waited for them to re-open, extended July 15-th date was approaching. They never did, but referred me to 3 lawyer groups that are helping low income people. Out of those, only this one answered the phone. Bill Rosenfeld calmed me down and worked with me remotely; my taxes were done on time. So, thanks Bill for saving me. I will forever be grateful.

Cindy made it very clear what to do in my situation. She gave me instructions for the next step with the grievance process and when to come back to ask for a lawyer if I needed to go to court. I did not have to wait long either. It went a long way with the housing meeting that I had to attend because of another Resident. Inna was very effective in getting my case dismissed. I had accidentally let my vehicle go uninsured, and I had moved to another state. My vehicle was still in Massachusetts and being driven by someone else. When I received my court summons I reached out to Inna, and she gave me advice and appeared in court in my stead so that I would not have to fly across the country.

The Attorneys were very nice, answered questions, and helped with problems. The reason I gave them only 3 stars is because, the attorneys are only students supervised by one seasoned attorney, you mostly worked on your case from a computer asking questions, and for some reason, I still don't understand they will not be representing you in the courtroom or at your mediation. Actually, the whole thing can be done from your smart phone or computer at home. Then you just print out three copies, and go about your day. If you really need a pro bono attorney representing you, GBL will be able to help pushing your court appearance further in the future, so you have more time finding a pro bono attorney.
