I used to love this YWCA and was a dedicated member at this location for years. I loved the community vibe and the warmth of the place and the fantastic classes. I loved running on the track and the great hot tub and sauna. I missed all of this so much during the pandemic, and really wanted to go back. However, one of the main reasons I go to the Y is for the classes, and since re-opening they just do not have enough to make it worth the money. I checked the schedules every few months hoping they would add more, but as it stands they have maybe one class after work hours per day. If that. This is absurd! I would love to go back if they added more, but I ended up joining the YMCA because they had far better course offerings. If any staff people read this, please please tell your marketing people this is a major issue and you are losing members. I’d love to join again if that happens.

The YWCA is a perfect match if you really love to workout. Just keep in mind they will make you pay for parking and extra classes (some are free). They also include an amazing swim team which isn’t free. I am currently on that swim team (otters). Overall the workers really care about their job and are kind as well as helpful.

I love how inclusive the YWCA dance exercise groups are. There is every fitness level, age, race-all are welcome. I have found members and staff to be very supportive. This is my first experience joining a gym. I am so glad that I joined the YWCA midtown facility. I feel good every time I step through the door.

Even though I have definitely encountered minor annoyances through my three years of membership, I still am very pleased with my overall experience. Yes, parking is a huge source of time and stress, especially during the New Years Resolution “season” and there was a chunk of time where they were adding wayyyy too may paid programs that took up too much facility space, but that seems to be improving. I really enjoy the group exercise classes, and the facilities in general. I participate in the Women’s Triathlon every year, and it shows the YWCA mission the best.

I've been going to this location for over 8 years and can't recommend it enough to people. The newly remodeled fitness floor offers every machine you can want, plus a large free weight area. The class offerings – both free and for a fee – are plentiful and instructors good. I recommend taking advantage of their 3-session personal trainer special when you join, to get your own routine going. The swim facilities are superior, offering a separate kid splash pool, jacuzzi and steam room, in addition to a regular lap pool. The locker rooms are nice and they offer separate family rooms. There is a large fieldhouse adjoining with an upper level running track. My favorite thing is the diversity of members, it feels like a welcoming place to all ages and levels of fitness. The only drawback is that parking can be a challenge at peak usage hours, but there is always parking within a block.
The also have many youth and community activities, and offer child care to members. Kid friendly!

This is a great gym and facility. While I has some issues, like all places, the good far outweighs the bad. The folks who gave poor reviews on this are the type that are not going to be happy anywhere and will always find something to complain about. Great customer service, the trainers are knowledgeable, the classes are fun and fitness is taken seriously. The aquatic center is top notch and the track is an added bonus. Add in the new boxing/mma equipment and this place us pretty damn solid. Well worth the money.

It's more expensive than chain gyms, but I think the sense of community there and the range of classes offered to members makes up for the price. I have never had a bad experience there and recommend it to my female friends who want to try lifting but are nervous to start in a more traditional bro gym atmosphere.
I second what someone else said about the women's basketball leagues though. If something is advertised on the website, it should not be impossible to actually learn about or register for it.

Okay, I want to give this place 4.5 stars, but that's not an option, I'm going to err on the high side.
Positives: Bodies of all shapes, sizes, genders, ages, colors, and abilities. As a person of size, I was super intimidated at the idea of going to a gym. But I didn't feel judged or out of place. Including standing on the pool deck.
Everyone one on staff is very polite and tends to 'stay in their lane,' but is generally friendly when you approach them. For me, that's perfect. If you're someone who wants staff who initiate small talk and approach you instead of waiting for you to approach them, you might find them a little distant. Again, for me personal, having some mental space is a feature, not a bug. (note: this doesn't apply to kid care staff, I don't have kids)
I feel more connected to my community since I joined. That's sort of an intangible positive, and I can't even really explain why, but it's a nice feeling.
They've taken steps to try and make sure there's always parking for members, as there's a volunteer who monitors incoming traffic to make sure everyone has their parking permit. I've gone on the weekends and never had a problem with parking.
Okay, now the handful of negatives: I have a really hard time finding out information. There's no new member handbook (that I was given), and while I did do the new member orientation, and got a guided tour before I joined, I still felt like I didn't know all the "rules," or even some of the potential services (long term locker rental? I think that's a thing, but I can't find any actual info.) I'm sure asking would answer some of my questions... but I wish the information was available in print.
Okay, now, the big (but admittedly temporary) thing: The locker rooms. As of May 29th 2018, the actual locker rooms have been closed for remodel. I understand why, and I'm sure I (and everyone else) will be super happy when the remodel's finished, but in the mean time... the workaround is... not good. Temporary changing rooms have been set up in the sports arena. There's less privacy than usual, even for a locker room, and no "all gender" changing area. The solution for anyone who might need an "all gender" changing area (whether it be a family of mixed ages and genders, or an individual who isn't comfortable in the binary option) is two divided off rooms, only accessible by going -through- the mens or women's changing area. The changing area is separate from the bathroom and shower area. The shower area only has two stalls that are barely usable. There is water everywhere in the bathroom from the swimmers, which I'm sure is maddening to the basketball players trying to use the toilet, ending up with wet court shoes. The changing rooms are physically as far from the pool as you can get. So if you're a swimmer, you're parading through the entire sports arena in your swimsuit.
All of that would be tolerable, for a month. But this remodel is slated to finish August 31st! 3 months! I'm hoping like heck that that is the 'worse case scenario' timeline, and that it'll actually be done in a month.
I did, 100%, know this going in, though it was poorly communicated to longer time members (many were expressing shock the day of the change). It is temporary, and the locker rooms definitely needed a face lift. But if you're thinking of joining especially if you're a swimmer, I'd wait until August 31st. If you're reading this after August 31st, I'm sure the new locker rooms are beautiful, and you can disregard the warning.
I do really love this place, joining was a great decision. And I can't wait until we have some gorgeous new locker rooms!

This place is very clean, they have a very nice selection of work out equipment. The locker rooms have been recently remodeled and are much nicer than they used to be. The staff have always been kind and helpful.
Parking seems to be a issue with people now that it isn't free. In the past there would be people parking in the Y parking lot and walking across the street to the social services building. Or the parking lot would be full of people going to the futsal tournaments or basketball tournaments hosted in the building adjacent to the YWCA. People would ignore the signs stating "members only" since there was no enforcement of the rules and so now they can pay or they can walk.
Yeah, I was a little peeved at first, but after seeing the ample amount of parking since the freeloaders are no longer present, I'm fine with paying my $10 a month.

I have been a member on and off for the past 10 years. I love almost all of their group classes & schedule options. I love knowing that no matter my work schedule, there will be a class I can take. What I dislike very much is the kids--I'm SORRY! but there are too many kids running around without parental supervision. Every time I canceled my membership it was due to this. I have complained many times to staff to require parents to be near their children especially in the weight rooms!!

I have been a member for over 3 years. For the last 3 months they have been redoing the lockers rooms and I have been told that they will be finish in 2 weeks, but I now have a new problem starting September 1, 2018 we will have to pay to park. It is a game changer. Parking has always been bad because of people parking there that don't belong to the Y. So I will probably be dropping my membership. I will miss lots of other members who I have become friends with, but even at 1 dollar a day that is 20. dollars a month. Not worth it in my book.

This gym listens and responds to feedback and I think that is a fantastic attribute. I put in a comment that the kettlebells were unorganized and I never knew what the spectrum of weights were due to this. It frankly made my workout unpleasant trying to sort through these weights and find the appropriate weight. After I put this comment in I came back to a system that color coordinated the different weights and grouped them together. This has made my workout so much less frustrating. Yes, there are things here and there that the gym could improve, but overall I'm happy with the facility. I would encourage anyone with issues to submit a comment card to have the issue addressed.

I am a long time member (in fact, a founding member ) of this facility. I love it dearly, especially working on the machines with so many different people from stylish yuppies to East African women with headscarves. It is fun to meet up with people of all ages and, for me in particular, to participate in excellent hatha yoga classes.
The facility is in need of some updates, but I trust that this will take place as the YW just updated the downtown facility.
And, BTW, the staff is great.

This gym has a lot of good things going for it. Their track is definitely the strongest asset, as it's the largest indoor one in the Twin Cities! Their hours are quite accommodating as they are open all the way until 10:30pm every weeknight (technically it's 11 but they basically start kicking people out a half hour early) and only close 90 minutes earlier on the weekends. Their pool has several lanes open for lap swimming and it's not too hard to get in. Unfortunately, this place gets very busy on the weekends (particularly Saturday mornings) with sporting events and other things. As others have said, parking here has been an issue historically (no surprise given that they host a separate sporting center for the city of Minneapolis and people often park where they shouldn't). It sounds like they are going to start charging people to ensure enough supply. This idea almost makes sense except that now the problem will probably get pushed out into the neighborhoods. Corcoran isn't like Uptown, so I'm guessing the streets will absorb it just fine, but the neighbors will probably be confused.

This location is very well-maintained, clean and inviting. The variety and quality of the equipment is top rate and the ability to use every inch of the gym allows members to explore each one of them!

Great staff especially at kids care, nice facilities and pool.

I think it's important to understand that the Midtown YWCA is outstanding for residing in the inner-city. The YWCA gives back to the community more than all other work-out gyms combined (Might be an exaggeration). But that's why I love the YWCA and especially the YWCA Midtown.
Proud member since 2000

Amazing, but the thing is the pool closes just so adults can swim. Which is not fair. The gym closes for other things like classes and things. We pay for our membership, so why kick us out of the things we do?

Got to say, i go to the gym for a reason. Everytime i go in, i get greet by nicely. Tonight, this african lady is just rude (it actually the second i saw her) no greeting, just a 'your a member' like seriously lady. If im not a member, would i be here tonight. Really dont know why she is still there. She totally forgot her manner as a employee. Everybody deserve the same respect.

edit: extra bench presses were added!
Excellent gym, but would love if the barbells were weighed and labeled, and for there to be a second bench press somewhere.

I joined this gym about a month ago and I love the facilities and the staff have all been very friendly.
However, the hours are RIDICULOUS. They close at 9pm on weeknights. So if you, like me, get done with work between 5-6, need to eat dinner and have ANY other errand or task to complete, you’re not going to have time for a proper workout, let alone time to use the amenities.
Weekends are even worse, they close at 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, and they close the pool even earlier. What is the point of having a gym membership with a pool/sauna/etc if you’re barely able to access it on the two days most people have the most free time in their week?
Other members have told me the hours were limited during covid and never readjusted after the world opened back up.
The youth sports are always at the sports complex on the weekends, and as soon as they are done the facility closes. So it feels like the YWCA is catering to youth sports and not the people actually paying the fees to keep the lights on.
Lastly, I tried to leave this feedback in the survey I was sent, but there was no place to enter feedback, so it would seem the YWCA knows this is an issue and isn’t interested in remedying it.
