I'm not sure how any of the recent reviews could be low for this place. I do not typically write reviews, but my experience was amazing! West Photo was one of the few camera shops still around in the Twin Cities metro area. Looking to purchase my first mirrorless camera setup, I called to ask if they had the new Fujifilm X-T5 in stock. Steve answered and said they did in fact have them and that the Fujifilm rep was in town for their trade-in days and he would be happy to answer any questions I had. I arrived at West Photo to find that not only Larry from Fuji was there, but also reps for Nikon, Canon, and Sony. What luck! The line of cameras for each company was displayed on the counter in front of their respective areas. I spoke with the Sony and Fuji reps, but decided that the Fuji camera was for me. Larry from Fujifilm has to be one of the nicest and most accommodating reps I have ever had the fortune to meet. He was honest about the limitations of Fuji versus other camera brands and happily answered my many questions. After getting the camera home, I noticed a small hair/scratch on the inside of the front lens element that came with the camera body. The next morning I drove back to West Photo and spoke with Larry and West Photo staff about options. They quickly agreed that it was a defect and offered an exchange. The employees at West Photo and Larry from Fuji provided fantastic customer service and I will definitely be a repeat customer! I could not recommend them enough.

I've rented lenses here on 4 different occasions and I've always had a fantastic experience! To get the best bang for your buck, I recommend picking up a lens on a Friday - you'll pay the 1 day rate but won't have to return it until Monday. If you rent during the weekday, they're also pretty generous with the pickup/return window, but it's not quite as long as the weekend. Rental prices are very reasonable - I'm typically paying $30-40 for the lens that I want. If you're a Sony shooter, I'd highly recommend trying out the 50mm 1.2 - I was astounded by it (and now I want to buy it!) The employees are friendly and helpful. I'm so glad I discovered this store.

Was skeptical about selling some equipment to a store but I felt the offer they gave me was fair considering I was struggling to sell the equipment online myself. They even told me I could get more for it if I didn’t sell it to them. Caleb was super cool, he pointed me in the right direction and helped me improve my understanding of lenses and suggested I move away from the 16mm crop lense I was using to the Sony 20mm 1.8 to pair with my Sony A7iii. I did a quick photo shoot at mill city park and a vlog and was blown away. Perfect lense! I’m glad I found West Photo! Will definitely be back.

Hands down, best pro shop in town. They earned my trust by confirming and recommending for me a replacement Nikon body that I had already decided on, instead of pushing the most expensive stuff on the shelf. They had no idea I am a professional, and I didn't tell them. I just told them my needs, and they suggested the exact equipment to meet that need. No overselling (as some of their competitors sadly do). They take the time to establish your needs and skills and work from there. I trust them.

During the pandemic, West Photo has a table outside the door with a staff member who will grab what you need from inside the store. I had some really dumb basic camera questions and they were happy to help me out and sell me some film. They weren't snobs about my lack of knowledge. Good prices on film too.

West Photo is a one of a kind store to me. They will treat you very kindly like a friend (or at least to me). They have a big selection on new stuff from Sigma to Canon. They have everything. For used, don't expect to find too much. Classes here are informative and worth going to. The only issue for West Photo are their weird hours, making it challenging to go to as a High School student outside of the downtown area, making next to impossible to get to and leave due to rush hour and short hours.

I come here very often to get my film developed. I've worked with every person at West Photo, with the exception of those in charge of Rentals, and I can say with full confidence that the staff is kind, knowledgeable and helpful. With film, I work a lot with Sharon. She has a quick two-day turnaround (if you bring film in on a Tuesday, for example, it'll be ready Thursday after 4pm) and is always willing to answer any questions. Equipment prices are fair, though it is rare for them to carry any lenses for my Canon AE-1. For film purchases, you're better off buying from Amazon due to West Photo's expensive price tags BUT for the service, this place is awesome.

This is a great place to rent and buy gear. I started going here in 2007 the day after the 35W bridge collapse. I rented a Nikon D200. The staff can be a little tough to understand. What do I mean by that? Some people are not the most friendly. But, hey, I'm there to rent gear, not make a dinner date. Over time and learning, I bought several lenses and finally bought a Nikon D800. I bought from them because you don't get the quality of service online than you do building a relationship with a local place. They do not disappoint.

This place is so awesome. I have rented lenses from them for the past year, and honestly didn't know of anywhere else to rent lenses and never had a bad experience so kept coming back. THEN all of a sudden today my Camera stopped working in the middle of a photoshoot. I brought it in and they helped me figure out what was wrong right away (luckily it was nothing detrimental, just a battery issue). They didn't charge me for looking at it, even after spending a good 20 minutes explaining what I could do to avoid this issue in the future. They're great and kind and helpful! I will always come back here.

Great equipment selection - worst customer service I have ever experienced. If you are not a card carrying professional photographer and I expect make this place your second home they do not seem to care. Waited for some 40 minutes while the clerks read catalogs or BS'ed with a photographer before I decided to take my business to some one who at least would acknowledge that I was in the store. Avoid this place, there are better places to spend your photography dollars.

Got my Fujifilm Xt-30 here and some done of my negatives processed. They were very helpful for both. Though I did not receive my digital via the provided USB they fixed it quickly and I still got them fast.

While visiting some MN friends to see the state fair, I was traveling with a new Fujifilm X-T3 in order to learn the camera functions in preparation for an upcoming trip (I’m normally a Canon DSLR shooter). After looking at reviews, I came into West Photo to see their Fuji lens selection. As someone who is new to the Fuji lineup, I had lots of questions. The staff at West Photo was extremely helpful and knowledgeable! I was able to bring in my camera body and, thanks to their extensive rental lens inventory, test out roughly 8 different X-mount lenses. They allowed me to take my time feeling out the options, taking photos indoors and outside. I ended up spending roughly $1,200 on some GREAT glass (FUJIFILM XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR Lens), and some new UV filters. I spoke to 4 employees during my time there, all of whom were helpful and had opinions on Fujifilm bodies and lenses that helped steer me in the right direction for my needs. I walked away very satisfied, and I would recommend this store to anyone looking to buy new or used gear from ALL major photo/video brands.

This is one of the long standing camera stores in the Midwest. Thay have a great selection of lighting and backdrops. Trypods are on display so you can get a feel for how they will work for you situation. Thay have a parkinlote in front of the store. Diffenitly stop in and take a look around.

Sound like Mikey and Erik had a rare experience because I have going to West Photo for about 12 years. As a fine arts photographer I can tell you that the staff is the most knowledgable I have ever experienced. West Photo has the largest selection around and the quality of there products is top shelf. If you don't care about superior customer service and post-purchase support then go ahead and buy online. If you value having someone to walk you though any problems with the ever increasingly difficult technology and you value family owned businesses then SHOP AT WEST PHOTO!!!

West Photo is by far the best to go to for inkjet photo printing paper. They have an entire room dedicated to the largest selection of multiple brands of paper in all sizes available. No other camera store in the metro area can match the selections that are available!

I've been shopping at west photo for about 2 years now. For awhile I was jumping back and forth between National Camera and various online stores. However, west photo is now the place to be! National camera has their prices marked ridiculously high and their sales staff is overworked by people buying point and shoot cameras. If you're a pro, or an amateur moving into the world of DSLRs you'll appreciate the higher end equipment that West Photo carries, their awesome and cheap rental department and the fact that they beat most online prices for DSLR's and lenses. I just bought a canon 50 1.2 for cheaper then the lowest price on Amazon plus didn't have to pay or wait for shipping and I can return it if I have problems. Additionally their sales staff is friendly and helpful. If you're looking for camera equipment definitely check out west photo. P.S. I'm sorry that some people have had bad customer service at West... I'm not sure if it is one bad sales rep that I've never met, or if I have low standards, but don't be scared they really won't bite.

I've been in West Photo once. I am in no way tied to them. I find some of the comments posted here ... well... The thing about the internet is that you only get one side of what happened when things go "bad". Like the comment about $200 more on the light meter. Let's see... first of all, do you need the assistance of someone who knows how to use it? If you do, pay more for the service. They have overhead. Here's a fact of life: You will always find it for less on the internet. They are under no obligation to match the price. There's no guarantee that the unit for $200 less is brand new and never been touched. I don't know and you don't either. Like I said, if you need the service, be prepared to pay more. Let's talk about rude, shall we? It appears some of the staff could have a attitude based on the posts here. It could also be that the customer comes in and expects the sales person to kiss their a$$. Match internet prices.Then there is the "What's the difference between Canon and Nikon?" Let me tell you what I think is going on. It's a 2 hour answer. And at the end of the two hours the customer walks and goes to the next camera store and gets the next sales person's opinion. I've owned both. It's as individual a decision as picking a spouse. Try both cameras. Hold them, feel them.. see which feels and works best in your hands. I can understand you not liking their answer, but the reality is it's the wrong question. I worked in a pro camera store as a 20 year old. I don't believe rude is right, but I won't sit here and blame West either. This is a pro store and some sales people just get tired of making time investments in amateurs that never pay off. I am a photojournalist that started in a camera store in Miami. I also have a ton of experience in retail. I suspect if you go into West and make it clear you want to build a long term relationship you'll do just fine. If you're a amateur that shops the web and expects the same price locally, do everyone a favor and shop the web or waste time at Ritz. When you finally give up in frustration because you don't know how to use the products that you bought on the web, then maybe you'll put value in places like West. BTW, when I do use a camera store for "mail order", the guy I use charges me more. And he is worth every single penny. Expertise is worth a LOT to me. Some of you will never figure that out.

"I got a new digital camera here and I love it! I take way too many pictures of my kid. It's probably because she's the cutest thing in the whole world. So I got a little tired of my only Sony cybershot digital camera and begged the boy to help find a new one for me. He brought me here. The staff was very friendly and we ended up with a smart, sweet woman that helped us find the perfect camera. She let us touch and play with everything. She told us pros and cons and let us take her picture a ton of times. The poor girl was probably blind the rest of the day! After considering all the pros and cons we went with a lovely Cannon powershot and we're still really happy with it. She recommend useful accessories that were not overpriced useless items.
