This is a small business compared to best buy or whatever. The selection of cameras is not comparable. They have everything! The staff were warm and friendly. They were very knowledgeable and honest. They helped me find a pretty good camera for a pretty good price. They taught me about it. This was the best shopping experience I've had in a long time. I will definitely come back for anything else I need.

I've recently visited Houston Camera Exchange for a mirrorless camera. The associate was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the products. He answered all my questions patiently and gave me advice on where I can grab the best deals. He also showed me how to take better pictures and advised me on which camera accessories would be great for beginners. I highly recommend this store to anyone looking for quality mirrorless cameras. They have great customer service and a wide selection.

I’ve always had very positive experiences at this place. They are very open and honest with you whether you are selling or buying equipment, when it comes to quality, price, or any other aspect of the deal you’re making. Several weeks ago, I had purchased a memory card with a read or write speed that was too fast for my camera. Bernie was very gracious to swap it out for one that fit my camera better, and was an absolute pleasure to work this out with. Highly recommend!

Went for the new Nikon Z series premier event. There were salespeople with camera equipment and answers to questions. There was wine and cheese and meat and fruit trays. They were giving away Nikon baseball caps and T-shirts. A nice bunch of camera aficionados came. Houston Camera Exchange is almost the only real camera exchange store left in Houston. They may not repair cameras, but can name sources that do. They have an interesting camera collection and friendly, helpful staff. They are geared to the serious camera lover, so I had to get my purse-like camera case elsewhere. They don't do free foto walks like Fort Worth Camera does, but they have suggested photo groups that do. They have been in Houston decades and is considered Texas’ premier photographic source. They are the largest photographic facility in town. They offer old and new cameras, darkroom supplies, photo gear, lights & printers. I may not use all that, but it is fun to wander the store.

I truly appreciate the fact that they treated me like any other customer even though I told em my budget was under $100 for a lens, I thought I knew what I needed and he recommended something different within my budget. The representative even let me experience my dream lens while he looked for the one used-lense he thought would be perfect for my needs and my camera, which was very encouraging for a beginner photographer like me. After deciding buying a camera from a stranger online was not a great idea, I googled to see what options I had for buying a camera locally... but like... not from BestBuy. Houston Camera Exchange popped up and after seeing the reviews and browsing their online inventory, I decided to stop in to purchase something I saw on their website. I was lucky to have worked with Matthew. After helping assess my needs, he was able to better direct me to a camera set up that would work well for me. At no point did I ever feel unimportant even though I wasn't dropping thousands of dollars and I also never felt pressured to spend more than necessary. Next time I'm in, I hope the next person I work with is just as nice and knowledgeable!

I ordered a camera in October 2021 because they didn't have it in stock. They finally call me 2 weeks ago to tell me the camera has come in. Most people wouldn't even bother keeping up with someone who hasn't yet purchased an item. They're very diligent and helpful people. I was impressed with the staff because they actually are photographers and they know how to use the equipment as opposed to people that know generalities and can't really help you with anything specific. Loved the service and Mary was exceptional!

Amazing customer service and good prices! I got a great deal on an uncommon vintage lens here. It was beat up on the outside, but had pristine optics. Sellers on eBay were asking 30-40% more (plus shipping) for examples in good exterior condition but with haze and fungus inside. And the staff, who were friendly and professional, went above and beyond to help me with the entire transaction.

I went yesterday for the first time to find a battery charger that I really needed for a cannon I use for school. I have an older model, so it’s pretty hard to find the charger for my specific camera, but they went out of their way to help me out. They didn’t have the charger, but I got a fully charged battery. There was a little trouble to order online on their website which they quickly fix and although when I got my camera, the battery of the camera was forgotten to be packed, but they quickly shipped it and got it the next day. This place is a Houston institution. That said, they are going to have to get their act together if they want to stay relevant. If you are trading in used gear expect to get a fraction of its value. Selection on newer gear is sparse. Great values to be had on well maintained used gear.

Very helpful in these C-19 times. Store not open to walk-in browsing or sales. Must call ahead for an appointment to get in the store. Sales are handled by calling in with your order and then staff will bring out to you and collect payment. All explained much better on their website, check it out for updates to the sales process. Huge selection, tons of brands to choose from, plenty of associates ready to help, very friendly and knowledgeable. In store reps and demos often. Recently remodeled inside makes for better flow. Could use a bigger parking lot but only an issue on weekends. Parking lot security is nice too. Prices and selection will always be better and cheaper online but for the service you get and in store pickup vs 2 days with prime it's worth the markup when you need help choosing or need something same day. They have new, used, and do trade ins, so there is something for everyone. My only complaint is the website, wish it was more modern and had real time prices and inventory tracking. I like the in store hands on feel, but I do most of my shopping online and can't make the hour RT often. They do have an eBay store, but nothing posted online is good, have to go to store for that. Highly recommended though

We love Houston Camera Exchange, .. they have an extensive array of camera bodies, lenses and tons of used gear, and vintage camera stuff. Lots of flashes and lighting .. even a beautiful lighting truss grid. They have a huge selection of photo background, paper in different sizes. Pelican cases, and super helpful staff !! .. I wish this place was closer to my house, I'm about an hour away, .. but then I'd probably go more often, and spend more money. One huge point **** YOU NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO GO TO THE STORE*** Because of the Covid pandemic they are seriously limiting access to the store and exposure. Masks are absolutely required, .. and only a few people at at time! CALL and make an appointment for whatever you need from this amazing store.

I have visited and used this store some number of times to obtain photographic supplies and equipment. The staff is great and the inventory is quite comprehensive. They definitely cater to the professional photographer but can help amateurs as well. I haven't compared prices and can not say if other locations might be less expensive. I love Houston Camera Exchange. They have almost anything you could want. They are a bit of a drive from Katy (where I live) but well worth the trip if I need something that only a pro photography store offers and you don't want to wait for an online purchase delivery. In my mind they are the only game in town...which is kind of sad...not for them but for us. That said I am glad they are here. I will be back again. I guess there's a reason there's only one camera store in the whole city. Omg Charlie is so nice ! Someone stole my canon and I had 100 questions about getting a newer better camera and he was so patient gave me the best advice and didn't make me feel rushed . He showed me multiple cameras and lenses (the ones I initially researched ) He even encouraged me to do my own research on the camera he recommended to me . He quoted me ($599) $650 including tax of canon t6 I found it online at Best Buy for $499 not including tax and another site for $319 not including tax. He quoted me $649.49 including tax for the Nikon d3400 which I did find at Best Buy for $499 not including tax so the prices are a little inflated but not too bad I suppose. The cameras themselves came with a 1 year warranty and the lenses a 5 year warranty I'm not sure if other places offer better or equal to this warranty or not . But do your research that's really important when buying cameras . Also I went on Saturday around 3:30 and it was very busy so I had to wait a little while before I was able to have someone help me . But after such amazing customer service it's all good . Thanks Charlie !

Great staff, but bad prices. I went in to buy some film, but walked out buying less than expected due to their incredibly high prices. Portra 400 is sold here for ~$13, $4 more than the online equivalent (w/free shipping). ColorPlus 200 is sold here for ~$6.50, which is ~$3 more than the online equivalent. Fix the prices (or offer price matching) and the store would be perfect in my eyes. Also, having a price catalogue or visible pricing would be a big improvement.

This place is overwhelming when you walk in, but very cool. I love cameras, would love to learn how to use them better. I have a basic knowledge and have taken some cool pictures in the past. I wouldn't mind upgrading my camera to a better, pre-owned one with more features. Instead I got answers to only the questions I asked. Maybe I didn't get the right guy, who knows. These guys were really great! I was having trouble with the focus on my Samsung alpha1000 DSLR camera and brought it in for repair. The guy that helped me spent a lot of time working on it to see if there was a simple fix. There wasn't so he did a factory reset. It worked! I was thrilled and will definitely go back. This place is a photographer's heaven. All of the cameras, lenses and gear you could ever want. The staff is always very nice and helpful. I also love that you can buy used equipment for a fraction of the cost of new equipment - definitely helpful with such an expensive hobby like photography. I would recommend doing research on the equipment you're considering BEFORE going, however. Once you get to the store it can be a bit overwhelming with the multitude of options available, so it's good to have a starting point to discuss with the photog experts there.

An old store location with everything a photographer could want. Gear, equipment, and accouterments for cameras abound, with a great selection of used items and staff that are phenomenal. They answer questions, help you shop, and would never try to get a sale out of you that you didn't want (to an extent), so go with questions and to browse and be pleased.

The display of old broken cameras is really fun, everyone has been polite (maybe a little cut and dry but I dont mind) and I've gotten good lenses for my nikon film camera. My wife purchased a Canon 7D used. She was hesitate and terrified the entire time it was being shipped and it took her a week to order it because of an awful experience she's had in the past with ordering expensive equipment online (from a different place). BUT wow. She was proved wrong and blown away at the great condition the camera was in. It was also "bargain" condition as noted on their website. There was only 2 little scratches (from what we could see). In our eyes, it's in excellent condition. We want to thank Houston Camera Exchange for their honesty and willingness to do whatever it was she needed to ensure she was getting what she paid for. I went here to find a solution to a problem I was having with my camera. The first guy who tried to help me insisted that I didn't know what I was talking about. After he did a quick Google search, he found out that I did in fact know what I was talking about and said he still couldn't help me. He sent me to someone else, who was quick to say that he had no idea how to help me and audibly laughed at me because I did not understand the phrasing of one of his questions. After being treated like an idiot by two of the men working there, I just left and went to Best Buy where the Sales Associate, who was very kind and patient, literally spent an hour with me trying to find a solution to my problem, and he did!! The same problem the Houston Camera Exchange was so sure there was no solution to. I am giving 3 stars because it is a cool place with neat products, but geez, the customer service was really disappointing.

Im new to photography and going in this store I felt so overwhelmed by all of the equipment and how it was setup. Four people greeted me and ask if I needed help although I was just looking (i knew i would buy at least a lens for t5i) but the 4th person Mat helped me out with getting a little cheap lens and a cheap light stand to go with my other 2 (1 is a table stand that came as a gift from the wife). The one i was looking at looked like it wouldn't be expensive but the person helping me showed me one that was a little cheaper and about the same. I didnt even ask. The fact that he didnt try to up sale showed me that this store is for the customer. I definitely will be back as I advance my skills.

As a former pro photographer, I would recommend Houston Camera Exchange without hesitation. They have a knowledgeable and professional staff who know the products they sell – and believe me when I tell you, they have a lot on hand, especially high-end lighting equipment. I recently purchased a complete Profoto system for a new home studio and I could not have been happier with the level of service I received from Matt Weintritt and Will Hardin. These guys know what they're doing and I keep their cards handy whenever I need help with anything. Special call outs also to Natalie for her friendly service and support along the way. It's nice to know Houston has a great place for photographers to actually put their hands on equipment, and talk to other pros, without the uncertainly and oftentimes stone cold nature of the web.

HCE is a pretty good store. They survived where other camera stores in Houston failed for a good reason. I can't even tell you how much money I have spent and received from them buying and selling gear here. I try as much as I can to buy gear from them as I can't put my hands on cameras buying online. I know within 5 minutes of playing with a camera if I will like it or not. Being that I have very fickle taste, it is important for me to try before I buy. On the occasions that I have been wrong and purchased something I didn't like, they have a very reasonable return policy. I also love that their staff all seem to have strengths that they put forward to different kinds of customers. I mostly talk to 3 people while I am there Matt Weintritt: Dude actually LISTENS to what you have to say and makes great suggestions. I think my tastes are a little eccentric for him but we see eye to eye on a lot of things. Beyond that, he is downright friendly and a cool dude. Good photographer who shoots regularly on top of that. Not many people in the city of Houston that I trust more than him when it comes to photographic matters. Charlie Nelson: I really like to talk to him about Leica in general. He is pretty down to earth about shooting and I have seen him giving really sound advice to less knowledgeable photographers. Rei: I talk to him when I am drooling over the film cameras. He has sold me a few cameras and knows his stuff on older gear. He is always pretty chill and willing to help with finicky old film gear. If you are like me and buy mostly used cameras, make sure you check their used website daily and survey their cabinets carefully. Sometimes there are things here and there in the cases not on the website. My only complaint about HCE is that they close too early! I know its hours are targeted towards people with 9-5s so that they can come in after they get off work but there are many times I am out shooting all day and when I run out of available light, I would love to come into HCE and browse around before heading home :P
